Broken Souls #1

My Dragon Lord: spicy Drachen-Shifter-Romantasy (Broken Souls, Band 1)

Rate this book
She’s stumbled into a lair of desperate dragons—and she’s just the thing they need.

I really messed this up.
Pinned to the floor by a billionaire playboy, caught stealing files from his computer.
“I’m trying to decide whether to kiss you or lock you up,” he says.
“Kiss me, and there will be blood. Not mine, either.”
He just smiles. Rich, powerful, probably used to getting anything he wants.

I’m just here to find my sister—I suspect he and his band of playboys have trafficked her and who knows how many others. I’m here for them too. Eventually.

But now I’m shackled to the wall in his dungeon—a literal dungeon in a literal castle tucked in one of the Thousand Islands at the border of Canada.

I really messed this up.

Ember’s a hot-shot reporter. Niko’s the sexy Lord of the Lair determined to find his soul mate… and he’ll do whatever it takes to save his people from extinction.

My Dragon Lord is a steamy dragon shifter romance that’ll heat up the sheets with love and warm your heart with dragonfire.

The first in the Broken Souls paranormal romance series, revolving around dragon shifters desperate to keep their people alive. The couple focus is on Ember and Niko.

My Take
Woods has a cute idea, but it could use work. More show, less tell. The insta-love was annoying, as was the insta-trust!

Nikolais Lord had a party and Ember makes her way into the party to find her sister. But she's a reporter and finds her way to an office where she's caught trying to steal files from his computer. She has no idea that the men at the party are actually dragons who are looking for their mates.

Ember thinks she can get in, steal some files, look for her sister and get out. But when Nikolais sends her to the dungeon instead of calling the police, she doesn't know what to think. But once he comes back and explains everything to her, she calms down and talks to him.

She's a reporter so what she wants to do most is an article about dragons living among the humans looking for their mates. But he explains to her that if they let it be know that dragons live there among them, the Vardigah which are dark elves, would come and kill them all. They already had them try to kill them all off and they almost succeeded so letting humans know about them was out of the question and she understood why.

Ember and her sister bot have the mark to show that they are a mate to a dragon but in order to find her mate she would have to kiss the dragons until they found each other. But there was already a strong pull between these two so I already knew that they belonged together.

When they find out where Ember's sister is and who has her they make plans to go save her. I really liked this book but it did end on a bit of a cliffhanger. I would have liked to have seen what's going on with Ember's sister after she's rescued but we don't get that. It was nice that Ember and Nikolais have a conclusion to their story and I am sure that Cinder will get her story in the next book so I'm not too mad about not getting a complete closure of Cinder's story since she'll be in the next book.

Boring

Nothing took this. Boring fated mated that uses the Instant love ‘plot’. The whole reporter angle isn’t anything. Very vanilla.

I received this story at my requests in exchange for an honest review.

Alisa Woods is one of those authors that cirque you in from the very first page. When I pick up a book from her I know that it is going to be good. I am not one of those people that has devoured all of her writings but when I do I am glad that I did and this was no different.

En6ber is not only looking for nefarious things that are happening add this party that she crashed but also looking for her sister. She has no idea of what happened to her but all she knows is that this party might be where her sister is located. What she didn't expect was to find her other half.

There is a lot going on within this short story. I have also grown attached to a couple of characters that I was not expecting too. I really hope that all of the single male dragons find their mates because I would hate for them to continue to die.

I am really excited to see what ends up happening with the series because this book set it up to be fantastic. There is a lot of interesting things that are happening and even know this is paranormal it doesn't feel like a generic series.

I really enjoyed Edward and Yvonne's narration. These two individuals are new to me but they did a fantastic job. I would listen to them again.

2.5 stars. Mildly humourous but also mildly disappointing.

- The rescue scene was quite pathetic - only a couple of paragraphs to infiltrate a secret lair and attempt to free a captive? How underwhelming.

- The dungeon thing is a red herring. There are some very very light references to BDSM but if you're looking for kink, you won't find it here. That's not a bad thing necessarily, but does mean the synopsis is misleading.

- The hero is a bit too good to be true. This whole dormitory to shelter abused/trafficked women... admirable, obviously, but also kind of built in to wipe away any misgivings one might have about his way of life or whatever. I'm over "perfect". Who isn't? It's so boring.

- I'm also over billionaires. Sure, I'd expect a dragon to be wealthy, but there's really no need to harp on about designer clothes and jacuzzi baths.

- Oh, and over men who say dumb shit like "I'm not a little boy in any sense." Put your measuring tape away, bro. No one cares.

Ember's on a mission to find her missing sister. There's a party on her sister's calendar & she thinks she'll find a lead. She bribes one of the catering staff to let her take her place. She sneaks in to the office & gets caught red-handed with a flash drive in her hand. She's trying to find evidence that Niko Lord is in to trafficking. What she finds out is way more than she expected.

This story is filled with a variety of subjects--abducting young women for sex trafficking, hospice for the ailing, steamy scenes, and action. This is another hit from Alisa. Her dragons are always hot & sexy alpha males, and the female lead characters are always strong, spunky and independent women. Put this on your TBR list.

A short, Sexy & Mysterious, fast paced read❤
( Like literally, I completed it in approx 2 hours! )

It all starts with Ember, a kickass reporter, stumbling into a dragon lair. Actually it's more like she was on a secret Mission to find her missing twin😅

Where Niko, A billionaire dragon leader, finds her, in his office snooping around.

A birthmark on her wrist reveals she is dragon spirited- destined to be a dragon mate.

There she gets revealed to the secret world of dragons who are on a verge of extinction, where she (& her twin, if they can find her) is the only hope❤
( the part where she gets to know it all, is where the story takes an emotional turn😍)

It's just a start of a fantasy story full of adventure, & I'm looking forward to the next book!

*Spoiler* P.s. it's Cinder's! Ember's twin❤

Quite short. I do like the characters and the story idea, but it was super insta-love and had lots of steamy scenes. Which are not bad of course, but I was not invested in the characters due to the shortness. Had it been a longer book, it would have been better for me.

If you like insta-love, sexy dragon shifters, and fated mates then this might just be the book for you. As it stands, whilst I’m a fan of the latter two… the former, not so much. On the whole this book felt very rushed, not just the romance but everything, and because of that I couldn’t immerse myself in the world nor get behind the budding romance between the duo.

Niko is honourable, and not too much of an overprotective arsehole which is usually featured in the shifter-fated-mates shenanigans. I found that rather nice, but pieces of his history just spilled out like someone had turned a tap, and I just couldn’t really relate. I don’t know about you, but even if I was madly in love with someone I met a few days ago I wouldn’t just spill out my entire life story – especially the painful parts which hurt to remember. It made him seem a bit flat.

Ember was… nice too? She was sassy and hellbent on getting her way – so female main lead tropes ahoy! I find it oddly traditional by this point. She finds out that the rich castle-dwellers are dragons by at least the third chapter, and winds up tied up in a dungeon soon after. And it’s a kinky place, not the rusted iron bars and mould-damp kind. Cue major freak-out.

Now, as for the main meat of the story—

Can someone please give me some backstory? Some further depth into the powers of dragons and their enemies? Some history as to the conflict between them? Some more exploration of the world(s?) before charging off half-cocked to rescue someone’s missing sister.

Yeah, I could totally tell exactly where her sister had vanished to the second the ‘enemies’ of the dragons were made known…

Last, but by no means least, the sex.

It…

Well, there was a lot of ‘oh my god’ or something along those lines, and a fair amount of swearing here and there, which just sort of pulled me from the scene and made me cringe. Plus—

Well…

‘Nuff said.

In hindsight I should have known there would be some clichés cropping up from the ‘sexy dragon shifters’ and the ‘billionaire playboy’ shindig in the blurb, but what can I say? I’m a sucker for them sometimes. This just wasn’t one of the ones which floated my boat.

Zero depth to the plot or world building. The human population doesn’t know that dragons exist and this dude transforms right in front of this chick like “so, we cool now? Btw, you’re my dragon soul mate” This has nothing on her Fallen Immortals series

Serious fans of the fantasy genre would be appalled by this book. It is not unlike Twilight but only with dragons.

How the f*** does a supposedly Pulitzer prize winning journalist forget to shut the door behind her??? Ember is an idiot and loses all credibility at the beginning of the book. Hence, I DNF.

These novellas are the distilled essence of a very specific kind of paranormal romance.
And this kind of book comes packaged with a host of flaws but beyond these expected shortcomings, it's pretty good.
It just owns it instead of half-assed attempts at hiding it behind flimsy excuses.
The biggest flaw and the only one that honestly bothered me a bit after realizing what these books are was the insta-love.
These are just novellas so there really is not much time to build believable feelings between the characters so I can accept insta-love is a genuine solution but the way it's done...
It's bad. Really bad. "I like your ginormous cock, therefore, I am in love with you until the end of time." bad. That is not an actual quote. It is just supposed to represent the level of shallowness you should expect.
But as I already mentioned, one could argue that all aspects of this fit in this specific pnr schematic I've seen before frequently.
I can't explain what this schema encompasses exactly without spoiling things for everyone who isn't yet intricately familiar with it.

So if you are up for a quick feel-good story with a dark background, lots of steam and don't care about shallow romance this will probably be a blast for you.

Prize-winning journalist Ember was caught stealing files from the computer of a billionaire playboy and as she is determined to get to the bottom of the women trafficking ring (and find her missing sister) she is mad at herself for such a stupid mistake. Now she is shackled to a wall in a literal dungeon in a literal castle tucked in one of the Thousand Islands at the border of Canada. Now she is a prisoner/guest of Dragon and sexy Lord of the Lair Niko who is determined to find his soul mate… and he’ll do whatever it takes to save his people from extinction. Can she find her sister and can he find his mate?

I loved this story which had the necessary elements of true mates, a precarious existence, evil and a very dangerous rescue involving loved ones on both sides. I loved the way the story was built up over time and the relationship between Ember and Niko. I can't wait for the next instalment in this series now. Well written and easy to read and understand. Contains some sexual content.

This was a short dragon shifter romance and it also had a lovely story line to go with it. The characters were brilliantly put together and I found it difficult to put down. This was another fabulous book written by Alisa Woods and I'd highly recommend the book to anyone who enjoys dragon shifter romances.

If you're looking for a dragon shifter romance, this is a good one
I don't know what the deal with all these dragon shifter romances I see lately is. I kinda blame Game of Thrones for it. Anyway, the genre seems to be brimming with bad writing, for some reason. That's why I was so pleasantly surprised with My Dragon Lord, by Alisa Woods. Fast but not sloppy (not a typo in sight, so rare these days), steamy but not thoughtless, with a main heroine that's not annoying (again: so rare these days!) and a romance that although steamy and fast-paced, feels organic. Plus, riding on a dragon's back, Daenerys' style, can only be a cheeky improvement on this cooky genre. I'll definitely be checking more books by this author!

Another great book from Alisa Woods and start to what looks to be a fab series.
I thought the book had a good storyline, interesting characters and easy to visualise world building. The narrators did a good job on bring the book to life and keeping the attention of the reader.
SPOILERS ALERT
I really lived Embers feisty character and i like how we're kept on our toes as to where their relationship is actually going.
A good bit of action, romanace and the few bits of comedy that make this book/audiobook great. Alisa has written a lot of very good books in the past an this one certainly doesn't disappoint!
This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Cute and Quick

*****Spoilers******

Fast moving but still a really cute story. I couldn't understand why Ember took so many risks at the beginning of the book and her scheme didn't seem sound at all so I wasn't the least bit surprised when she was caught. Niko is equal parts honorable and has lots of good qualities. Though they're in love and mated within a few days, it seemed right somehow. The differentiation between the dragons and their enemies needs a bit more work as well as the no one knows about us angle. That's become a common storyline that's gotten old for me at least.

Ok so you have to really suspend belief from page 2 onward. Now I love Dragon books but so much doesn't hang together. She's looking for her twin, meets, fucks a dragon, then she and the dragons go to rescue the twin apparently the last living witch the dragons need so badly is left behind in the rescue, plus one of his men tell him that there is another "mate" being held but they don't go and rescue either one, totally forgotten about in the story and never mentioned again. Twin won't wake up so they hop back into bed for mind blowing sex. The End! That's it. No twin, no witch, no mate. Just, that's all folks.

My Dragon Lord is the first novella of the Broken Souls Series, a sexy dragon shifter romance. Ember and Niko are both great characters. They share an instant attraction/love, and a sizzling chemistry. The supporting characters are great and intriguing. The storyline is original, steamy, and fast paced, with action, and mystery. The narration is amazing! Edward Thomas and Yvonne Syn have both a great voice, very pleasant to listen to. They are perfect together. Looking forward to listen to the next installment in the Series, My Dragon Keeper. I was given a free review copy of the audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

So, I loved this book but I am only giving it a four star because it was rushed. The story could have been great if the author would have slowed down a bit, added more to the characters, and well hell just more to everything. I absolutely loved Niko and wish there were more shifter books with Alphas like him. The sex scenes were really good, tear jerking, heart throbbing possibilities. There were a couple things said that made those scenes awkward, like the womb part. For a novellas it was great. As a novel it needs work. I didn't mind the insta love, that was tolerable in this story. I will definitely be reading the next story.

A sweet story but didn't hit the mark for me. Insta love stories can work but there was too much going on that just swept through in the pages. It was almost like listening to my daughter when she's had an energy drink or two.
Also Ember and Cinder? Too cliche. If I'm thrown in to a fantasy world, you have to go realistic names or completely made up ones. Why would their parents call them Ember and Cinder if they didn't know about the dragon spirited but then if they knew, why would the girls have known about them at some point in their growing up.
Not enough for me to consider the rest of the series so will stop here.

Not bad!

I thought the storyline was hurriedly put together.
You had a slow start to begin with, with the undercover work, which was good. Then suddenly, the Dragon Lord is exposing his Dragon to her and getting down to business in desperation.
I am sorry. For me there is nothing to excite me. No battles with the Vardigah, or any enemy, just lust or love of you like. Plus it has favourite hated thing in a book.... Cliffhanger!!!
When I buy a book, I want, no. I Need a start, a middle and an end, a conclusion. There is not one in this book.
I want book to be like movie, complete, not like a soap opera that goes on and on.

The story is quite interesting a dragonshifter who finds his mate and they are finally mated. Apparently there is a group of species who tried to kill the dragons before and have kidnapped the sister of Ember. I find the story ended too soon. There was no development of the characters. I mean was the main point of the story to find each other and rescue his mate's twin sister? I feel it was rushed and i didn't get to see what happens to the two lovebirds. I know there is book two but then that's concentrates on Cindy's story.
