Courtship of Convenience

Observations of a Wallflower
Journal Entry of December 5, 1816

Society can be odd, and those within the ton do not always behave as expected.

For example, Lady Violet Claxton spent more time in the gardens admiring flowers, plants, and bushes than she did inside any ballroom, and I left London wondering why she preferred roses over bachelors. Though, perhaps, it’s because she’s grows bored with tedious conversation, as her intelligence is beyond most, she’s pragmatic, and lacks patience when time is wasted. Therefore, a London Season must be trying, indeed, for someone such as she.

Then there was Lord Emory Talbot, Viscount Ferrard, who behaved exactly as one would expect of a rake. Though he is expected to marry and produce an heir and a spare, Ferrard showed no interest in any lady or miss for longer than an evening. Further, I have it on good authority that he fears any form of commitment, which may explain why he’s not even kept a mistress or settled on a wife. However, rumors have recently reached me that he may no longer have the option of waiting. The details have not been shared, but I’m certain they are drastic, as I’m to understand that he is to attend a house party where Lady Violet is in residence. And, I have also learned from the most trusted authority that Ferrard never attends house parties.

I cannot begin to imagine how the two might get on when they do finally meet. Will he show interest for no more than a night, or will she spend all her time in the gardens avoiding all guests? Regardless of any interaction the two may share, I’m certain nothing will come from their association, as I can’t think of two less likely candidates to enter into a courtship.

When their friendship deepen to stronger feelings , will they act upon them or let preconceived ideas keep them apart...

Since I have the novella opening this new series, I have been curious about the many siblings from the heroes’ family.
This story shares the frame-time with the first one, as the hero is one of the guest-potential suitor of the house party organized for the heroine’s sister.
Violet is a much peculiar lady, she always acts rationally, weighing her every decisions, never letting emotions meddle with her actions.
It is not fully explained but her present attitude is probably due to a childhood pain. Since, she adopted this approach of life, never coating her words with sugar, blunt in all her assessments, avoiding crowds and entanglement which is perceived as being cold or shy.
Why she prefers botany and entomology to gossips and dancing.
Emory has a reputation, one he is aware to be well deserved. Yet, if he is well known as a rake, it is because of his good heart, he has always refused to hurt willingly someone so he sees no string attached affairs as the right answer. His paramours are forewarned, there is no expectation outside the intimacy shared.
Yet he is now on the marriage mart, and his notoriety impedes him as much as his inability to be attracted to any of the debutantes strolling the ton’s parties. Yet he is one of the many competitors for a lady he has no interest in. If only she was her sister, the one he has seen from afar at many balls, often hiding in the gardens.

I immediately fell in love with Emory, his repute is deserved but it was with a good ulterior motive, to avoid hurting someone. But it is this same renown that hinder his courtship with Violet, even if it is at first one of convenience. She constantly reminds herself he is a rake, a profligate. Yet his good demeanor should have been proof of his good intentions. Violet has her reason to be so cartesian, still she dismisses Emory’s warning and is blind to his feelings.
Their romance is a lovely tale of two people who by getting to know one another become friends then fall in love but do not know how to act upon their burgeoning feelings.

A beautiful love story.. A unique lady, and a misunderstood rake.. She's not your typical everyday daughter of a duke and she's not the type who falls for charm but she wants her father to leave her alone about getting married so she continue being free, He is a rake who is used being in the company of women who are easily charmed but he wants to please his father.. So when they meet they strike bargain.. But that bargain becomes complicated when they realize that they are attracted to each other no matter how much they try to fight it.. The bargain becomes a happily ever after..

The characters are absolutely amazing, the storyline is incredible, I look forward to more from this author

Lady Violet Claxton spent most of her London season in the gardens at entertainments. Lord Emory Talbot, Viscount Ferrard should be looking for a wife, instead he spends his time with widows. Ms. Charles has written an excellent romance Regency period of England. Violet and Emory spin the entire book getting to know each other and fall in love with each other without realizing that the other one has fallen in love. It is well written and very enjoyable and you should read it...

Courtship of Convenience is book two in the Observations of a Wallflower series by Jane Charles. I enjoyed this story. I especially liked the humor running throughout the book. “Emory leaned in. ‘Lord Ferrard, what are you doing?’ ‘I was going to kissy you.’ ‘You are also drunk.’ ‘I am not,’ he defended. Though, perhaps he was, slightly. ‘Ours is a courtship of convenience, remember.’ ‘I’ve not forgotten.’ ‘Then I see no cause for you to kiss me.’ He frowned. ‘What if I wish to.” There are a few twists that I didn’t expect that kept the pace brisk. Well done!

A Duke’s daughter on the spectrum is misunderstood by most in the ton but Lord Ferrard finds her interesting and unique. Entering a courtship of convenience to appease their fathers they don’t see the danger to their hearts until it is too late.

When a wallflower makes observations of Society, perhaps they see more than meets the eye.

Lady Violet is seen as aloof and a snob. Lord Gerrard is a rake, only after widows. But when fate intervenes, maybe they will find more in each other than meets the eye.

When I was first asked to review this book, I was not sure if I wanted to read it. The book blurb is not the best at relaying how interesting the book is. The beginning of the book threw me off a bit.
Violet is twenty years old and is very practical. She prefers observing flowers and insects and not being in a crowded ballroom. Violet is socially awkward and others are rude because they don't understand her.
Emory is a rake that has decided it is time to marry and have heirs. He goes to a house party that is meant to find Violet's sister a husband and instead begins a fake courtship with Violet. Violet who he has admired from afar.
The whole story is sweet, entertaining, and somewhat unique. I have not read book one, but I will be reading it. I look forward to more books in the Observations of a Wallflower series.

I received an ARC for an honest review.

A very well written book with strong characters & a story that flowed really well. I loved both Emory & Violet who were attracted to each other from their first meeting but both believed that a fake courtship would work! I loved their journey to a HEA both having fallen in love but not realising how the other felt. An entertaining fun read & I look forward to more in the series

If you have read the Ghost and Miss Miranda the a few of the characters you will recognize. If you recall Lord Epworth has a few sisters. This is one of his sister's story.

What a sweet, fun & romantic book! If you have read The Ghost & Miss Miranda from early in 2021, you will remember Wesley Claxton, Marquess Epworth & the heroine in this book is one of his sisters.

Lady Violet Claxton is the daughter of a duke, a bluestocking with interests in Botany & Entomology & The Ton has deemed her interest in gardens to be strange. She is lovely, confident & the men always flocked to sign her dance card but she refuses them all - why - is she shy, cold, haughty or does she enjoy roses more that gentlemen?

Emory Talbot, Viscount Ferrard & heir to Earl of Lovell - he is handsome, well known rake that prefers lonely widows with no commitments in the past but now his looming responsibilities have pushed him to begin searching for a bride.

A measles breakout with house parties planned in the country facilitate Emory & Violet meeting. They have seen one another over the years but have never been formally introduced & this begins a friendship, a fake courtship, some danger, smuggling and a whole lot of fun, humor & romance. The well-written story and marvelous characters kept me turning pages to see how they would finally get their HEA. I voluntarily read & reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts & opinions are my own.

Courtship of Convenience, by Jane Charles. Another, romantic love story were the two star cross lovers are pushed together by their loving parents. I thank the writer for keeping this story charming and light. The writer did great with the details of the story being simple. The conversations and topics of discussion among the characters stayed to the points of discussion. The drama for me was light, but kept me entertained.
The characters, most of them where witty. The book reads with realism in relation to the plot of the story. The romance between Emory and Violet, I thought was a slow burn. I think that the writer did a wonderful job of telling this story to her readers.

He leaned over and nudged her shoulder, much as her siblings had done in the past. “Nobody has called me a fool before.”

“I believe you called yourself a fool, Lord Ferrard,” she returned.

“Yet, you did not disagree.” He arched a dark eyebrow as if he were challenging her to disagree.
Violet looked into his deep sapphire eyes. “No. I did not.”

His grin widened.

Violet suddenly found it difficult to breathe as he stared into her eyes for the longest moment and then he leaned forward, his lips nearing hers.

“Oh dear, we must hurry if I’m to arrive at Forester Hall in time for afternoon festivities.”

At Lady’s Joanna’s voice, they jerked away from each other.
Violet had completely forgotten they had a chaperone.

“Now, come along, we must hurry back. I’ve already been delayed.”

“Delayed?” Lord Ferrard asked as Violet glanced at the small watch within her reticule. Goodness, they’d been gone nearly two hours.

“Yes, well, I didn’t wish to interrupt earlier, given the two of you appeared to be having a serious conversation.” She then started to smile. “And, if my eyes didn’t deceive me, Lord Ferrard nearly kissed you, thus, it was time for my interruption.”

With that, Lady Joanna turned and marched away from them and toward the waiting carriage.
“It would have been far more satisfying had she allowed me to kiss you,” Lord Ferrard whispered.
And even though Violet’s face heated and the most delicious warmth spread through her being, she reminded herself of their circumstance. “And if this was anything other than a courtship of convenience, I might have allowed you to do so.”

She must be careful around Lord Ferrard. Even though a friendship had developed, she also knew him to be a rake, who would likely return to his rakish ways until he found a wife. This she must keep in mind, especially since their courtship would end in a sennight. Therefore, there would be no kissing.

I liked the characters and setup at the beginning, but quit at 56% because I just couldn’t take the willful stupidity anymore. Lady, when a man tried to sexually assault your sister, and has made it clear he intends to pursue you too, taking precautions is sensible, not an affront to one’s independence.

Jane Charles has quickly become a favorite of mine. Her books are always filled with fun, humor and romance. Courtship of Convenience is one of those books, fun, romantic and oh so sweet!

Lord Emory Talbot, Viscount Ferrar is a rake, but an honest one with no intention of marrying but it seems all that changes as he needs an heir and a spare. He has always preferred arrangements that didn’t involve expectations. Lady Violet Claxton is the daughter of a duke, a bluestocking with interests in Botany & Entomology. She has an analytical and scientific mind. To the Ton she appears cold, shy and peculiar. While both would wish to marry for love they don’t feel that’s an option for them. As these to get to know one another they agree to a courtship of convenience, one with an expiration date to avoid their respective father’s insistence that they marry. Entering into this arrangement they agree to go through the motions without emotion.

The author does a wonderful job creating extraordinary characters who come to life on the pages and grow throughout the story. Her dialogue is great befitting each situation in story, filled with humor, wit and fun. pens well-rounded, believable, and very alive characters in this story. Her rich, visual and sensory prose is l crafted with immense skill. The pacing of the story was good, not too fast, not too slow.

I really enjoyed seeing these two become friends and seeing the respect that Emory had for Violet. I loved Emory, he was really such a good man. Well it took a little bit longer to warm up to and how we really got to know her. There were so many misconceptions about her. She was a woman ahead of her time. It was wonderful to see them fall in love, never having felt those feelings they were uncertain of one another. This is such a sweet romantic story that touches your heart.

Thank you so much Ms. Charles for this charming and delightful story of sweet romance. Your stories always enchant me.

Lady Violet is not like any young lady of the ton. Daughter of a Duke, she is not excited to get married and give up all she loves, gardening (yes her hands are dirty), NOT attending balls, and a few nighttime adventures (that would make your toes curl).

Lord Emory, Viscount Ferrard, now realizes he needs a wife (his father is not well). He comes from a big family, which proved his parents married for love. Now he feels that may not be an option for him.

The two wanting to avoid matchmaking of her father and his, well everyone...agree to a courtship that carries an expiration date. They must spend every day together so it appears to be legit. What could possibly go wrong? Everything when the two finally fall in love with each other...but neither one really knows if the other one has indeed fallen for the other.

You would think two intelligent people would have figured it out...but what fun reading about these two. I enjoyed these two accept each other flaws. Lord Emory really shows compassion when Violet shows her true color and trusts him with her secret (a flaw many of us share)...Excellent Love Story

This is a delightful tale of a rake and an unusual young woman. Violet's difficulties would have been worse in Regency times, as little was known of autism. She was considered as 'odd' and, without a man of compassion, would have spent her life misunderstood and miserable.
Emery is a rake, but he seems only so to protect his own emotions and avoid becoming close to any, especially a woman. Both fall in love, thinking the other views their relationship as friendship, and despite considering their courtship as no more than a convenience to appease their fathers.
I was disappointed in Liam's attitude. For an upstanding doctor in a small community, his behaviour leaves a lot to be desired. There is a villain and he is as boorish as one would expect.
There is a lot more to this book with several understated events and circumstances, but this merely adds to the intrigue and does not leave the reader unsatisfied.
Thought provoking and holding the reader's interest when all that is happening is gentle courtship, I would recommend this book to friends.
This was an ARC I reviewed voluntarily and I gave it four well deserved stars.

I was absolutely delighted with this book! This is my first book by this author and I was actually a little hesitant to start reading it, thinking it was outside of my preferred reading genre. Boy was I surprised and just totally enjoyed this cute story.

The main characters are Violet, daughter of a duke, and Emory, heir to an earl. He is a known rake and she is definitely a left brain woman. The book revolves pretty much around this "Courtship of Convenience" that they enter into with each other to appease their fathers.

An excellent and very enjoyable storyline that the author delivers almost flawlessly. The characters were all new to me and I thought she did a great job of bringing them to life and giving the reader multiple opportunities to chuckle as you envision what is happening on the page. I hated to see the story end as they begin their HEA. I did read this in a single day and it is a hard book to put down. A sweet romance with kissing.

I received an ARC copy of this book and this is my voluntary, honest, and completely personal review.

I really enjoyed this book, probably because the heroine is similar to me. She is shy in Society and would rather study a flower or bee than dance with a duke at a ball. But around her family, friends, and community members, she's competent, caring, and resourceful. Lady Violet is very intelligent, and her main goal is to be able to use her gifts even after she marries (if she must).

Lord Emory was never in a big hurry to marry, but now that circumstances have made it necessary, he hasn't really found anyone that holds his interest. Lady Violet is different from the other ladies, and she is interesting to talk to. So Emory thinks it should be easy to carry out a temporary courtship to satisfy both their families. The more he gets to know Violet, the more he hopes he can make it a real courtship.

I loved that Violet was an independent, intelligent person and that Emory found that part of her personality fascinating instead of trying to discourage her. It was also very touching that he wanted to be the protective hero even when Violet thought she could handle everything herself.

This is my first experience reading something by Ms. Charles and I really enjoyed it. It's a really sweet and charming story. It was very well-written and pulled me in right from the start. The characters were well-developed and endearing and you can't help but fall in love with them. In order to put their respective fathers at ease, and quite frankly, get them to back off, Violet and Emory enter into a conveniently fake courtship, which quickly becomes inconvenient as they start to develop real feelings for each other and their hearts are in danger. They develop a beautiful friendship and do not know how to act upon these romantic feelings. A very entertaining and enjoyable read, and I am very glad I had the chance to read this story. I now have a new author to follow! I look forward to reading more of Ms. Charles' books!

I received a complimentary advanced reader's copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving my review.

Violet is not your typical lady. She is uncomfortable in crowds and so the Season's activities are difficult for her. She'd rather escape to a garden and spent time with plants and insects. Emory is a rake who feels he needs to marry soon since he is the heir and his father is not doing well.
These two seem to not have anything in common except for wanting to be forced to marry. They therefore agree to a Courtship of Convenience while her family is hosting a house party to find a husband for her sister.
Violet is a strong, independent woman who doesn't need a man to do things for her and Emory admires her for that. Because there is no pressure on the pair, they form a friendship that leads to love - whether they know it is going there or not.
The happily ever after is definitely worth the wait. I received an advanced copy of this book in return for an honest review.

I have to admit, Victoria seemed cold and unemotional the whole book, even with the reasons why. For that reason I wasn't able to warm up to the heroine in this story until about 3/4 into the book, closer to the ending. Lord Ferrard was easier to like, and only slightly strange in his behavior. I did have problems at times with the hero and villians names (they look too much the same when speed reading). The ending saved the book for me with how things were wrapped up and situations came together, otherwise I wouldn't have liked the book. The ending almost made up for the rest! I did like the small glimpses we got to see of Victoria and Lucinda's grandmother! Thank you for the advanced copy!

I really like Emory and Violet. Neither of them really want to get married right now but their families are nagging them about it. Emory is such a rake and his father is disappointed with him. He feels Emory hasn't given any woman a chance. Emory refuses to make any commitment. Then he meets Violet. She is unlike any woman he has ever encountered. She is plain speaking and sometimes he doesn't know what to do about that. Emory always tries to be honest with everyone, especially Violet. After arranging a fake courtship and after getting to know each other, they both are falling in love but don't want to admit it. Can they find lasting love? Will Violet have to give up all of her freedom?

This book is about Emory and Violet. Emory never wanted to get married, but now he is looking for a wife. He goes to a house party to look for a wife, but he decides he does not want the lady at the house party he wants to get to know her sister Violet. Violet is not really comfortable with parties and groups of people; she enjoys the garden better. Violet and Emory become friends and more feelings arise. I am only giving this book 4 stars because while I was reading, I felt like it was dragging and going slow.

I really enjoyed this book. The story of Emory and Violet was a lot of fun and real. The villian was just nasty enough to be believable. The build up to the hero and heroine had me smiling and there was good angst leading up to the climax. Emory is a kind and protective hero while Violet is caring and strong. She doesn't want to marry and neither does he. To keep those that meddle at bay they strike up a plan. They pretend to court each other. When an enemy insists on courting Violet and won't take no for an answer will he succeed at his plan.

Lady Violet is a very unique type of person who you will love from the first page. Straightforward, strong willed and confident can be used to describe Violet but unfortunately she has been described in some very different terms which Emory has the privilege to disprove for himself. A rogue and a bluestocking lead this engaging courtship where two people have the privilege of being themselves outside of the eye of the ton. I loved their story of discovery and freedom to be who they truly are for each other.

This is the second ‘Observations of a Wallflower’ novel and I really enjoyed the story of Lady Violet Claxton and Lord Emory Talbot, Viscount Ferrard as they navigated the rocky road of a ‘convenient’ courtship. They undertook this action to thwart their fathers’ intentions of finding them suitable marriage partners. Little did they know what lay ahead for them. Another well written and entertaining regency novel from Jane Charles. I received an ARC and am leaving a totally unbiased and voluntary review.

I loved Violet and her self-assurance. She was so head strong and practical, and it was fun watching her deal with true feelings. Emory was so confused at first, but he realized her true worth. With so many secrets, a little danger, and a whole lot of friendship and love all around, these two had quite the journey, and I had fun. I recommend this story.

An interesting installment about the Claxton Clan - I loved the prior books ( Lady Lucinda story and Violet's brother (Epsworth).

This book was delightfully sweet & Lady Violet's character was very intriguing. I loved the way the relationship grows between Lord Ferrard and Lady Violet.

I like Ms. Charles for her descriptive scenes and emotions which add richness to her books.

A must read for fans of closed bedroom scenes and light kissing.

Violet & Emory... neither have an interest in all the trappings of marriage... but family obligations on both sides dictates otherwise. Putting their heads together they come up with a plan... entering into a "fake" courtship. But...the best laid plans...what fun! Such an enjoyable read. There was humor, wit, strategies & of course we wish for a HEA... I found the book hard to put down a real page turner! I recommend this book!
