School president Allie and popular jock Troy have been the best of enemies since the beginning of time. But things change...
Allie Alberts is as straight-arrow as you can get. She's the President of the school council, head of the Student Affairs Board, and an indisputable teacher's pet. She's so straight-arrow, she's been with the same smart, stable, and loyal guy for all her life. Last year, she suddenly, mysteriously, left school in the middle of the semester. But now that she's back, people are noticing certain...changes.
Troy Williams, the most popular jock on campus, has been the bane of Allie's existence right from middle school, and he wouldn't touch her to help her if her hair were on fire. But now that they're in college, not even in his wildest dreams did he ever think that she would look at him twice, especially when she already has Mr. Loyal by her side. Troy's certainly hot, and he definitely knows it. So maybe Allie's tastes have simply changed. Or maybe there's another reason...

I disliked almost all of the characters, especially at the start of the book. It got better as I read on but I think it just was not the right kind of book for me. What made me dislike almost all the charaktes in the book was how little openmindedness they had. They were all caught up in their Cliques and personal bubbles and thinking themselves better than everyone else outside their very specific group. Somehow everyone was constantly on edge and making impulsive/unwise decisions. It was infuriating but at the same time felt like an accurate depiction of highschool and the chaos that is the teenage developing brain, which was impessive.
Change of Mind is an enemies to lovers YA story set at a boarding school starring Allie and Troy. Allie is the class president and much involved in various school event, and as a student she's always been an overachiever. But she has lately been absent from school for several months and she's still rather distracted when she comes back. Her boyfriend Caden and her friend Nicola think her course choices this semester are somewhat unusual as she takes arts lessons and regular physics instead of the advanced stuff everyone expects of her. That's why she comes into closer contact with Troy. Troy is a player both on the football field and off it. His crowd treats girls like props with breasts, all interchangeable. Troy's group of friends despises Allie's group of friends and vice versa, and after a history of years of dehumanizing insults no one believes that Allie and Troy could have anything in common. But it turns out they do.
What I liked: I liked Troy's growth as he started to recognize the misogyny his friends were spouting. Allie's friends are more studious but they can be very judgmental and extremely rude to people who never did anything to hurt them, and breaking apart from their expectations might be healthy for Allie. The writing style has a nice flow and makes for an easy, entertaining read.
What didn't work for me: These are high school kids and they drink like fish, if fish drank irresponsibly with few repercussions and little to no adult supervision. Outside the school hours, none of the school adults seem to care for anything they do, and no one's parents seem much involved in their children's lives. So Troy's crowd parties mighty hard with nary a hangover to show for it. One of them showed up drunk at school and got away with it rather easily. The football team even gets wasted the evening before crucial football games that could decide their futures. I know it's realistic for some kids but the worried mom in me cannot like it.
I received a free copy of this book and this is a voluntary review.
Set in an American boarding school, Change of Mind follows the almost unbearably preppy Allie Alberts and her lab partner, the athletic Troy Williams. Though the two start out as fierce enemies, throughout the course of the story they begin to overcome their differences and warm up to each other (quite literally!). Alongside this, Allie is struggling with a secret that she cannot bear to tell anyone.
Breaker’s easy read is a heart-warming romance, with plenty of cute moments between the two main characters. My main issue actually lay with the other characters: none were all that developed, and even Allie’s ‘best friend’ was rarely shown to be a friend at all. Caden, Allie’s boyfriend, could have easily been a friend of hers, other than one or two kisses on her forehead. The romance throughout was quite tame, but this felt appropriate for the book and its intended audience. Moreover, given the frequent mentions of Allie’s disappearance from school, Allie’s ‘condition’ is not explored that much throughout the book even after its reveal. This is a shame, as this would have been a good opportunity to explore school-related pressure and anxiety. Sadly, it just feels a little bit too surface level of an explanation for such a serious issue.
On the whole, Breaker does tell a lovely story about two teenagers falling in love, and this is clearly a great strength for her writing style. Though the details outside of the primary relationship could definitely stand to be fleshed out more, the reader does come away from Breaker’s novel feeling happy and light – which is exactly what you want from a YA romance!
[I was sent an ARC in exchange for an honest review]
I hate that I am giving it a one star I really do! It was kind of cute but it was extremely slow. There was tons of name calling and what would be a typical High School life for the smart kids and the Jocks. They were so spread out and against each other it was a little tough. I wanted to finish the book I do not like doing DNF, so I really pushed myself to finish.
The story line was cute. Smart girl, class president, with the childhood boyfriend. Something serious happens to sad girl which changes her and the way she sees things now. Boyfriend of her doesn't understand what is going on and why she is the way she is now, and they break up. Once they break up she starts to do the opposite of what she is used to doing, going to parties hanging out with the Jock, the mean guy of the jock squad. Ends up kissing all this kind of stuff and then secret relationship. It took so long to get to this point in the book and then she gets back with said first boyfriend, when she knows she shouldn't.
I just think that it could have been better. I was kind of not feeling it due to the constant name calling and things. Like I said I hate that I am giving it a 1 star, but I just wasn't into it that much. It may be different for others and thats okay, but I had to push myself to read it. It took me 7 days to read it. I know some have taken probably a little longer and I actually enjoyed it but this one I just couldnt and I am so sorry.
Great story line and idea, just really really slow.
The Allie and Troy the main FMC and MMC were super cute though.

I found this a little hard to get into. This was meant to take place in a college but read more like high school. Bells ringing? Class president? Nerds vs jocks? My university/college experience was very different. I mean even the classes confused me, was her best friend and boyfriend taking the same degree? And Physics wouldn’t be the name of the class right, it’d be like introduction to physics or thermodynamics, like something more specific like a component or section of physics. Like it’s not just business class, it’s marketing, communications, leadership skills, etc. I also found it a bit hard to believe that after taking six months off Allie is reinstated into leadership roles in all of her student committees and all the teachers seem to know her, her reputation and what classes she’s taken previously but don’t know why she left for six months. Vandalism and a penchant for trouble follow you but the aim in college is to get good grades.
I don’t think it helped that I didn’t really like the love interest, Troy. I didn’t really find him very redeemable or really understand why Allie changed her mind about him. Also, Caden felt like a plot device not a boyfriend, I would’ve liked to of seen more personality from him.
It was a quick read with a few cute moments in it, it just wasn’t my cup of tea.
This was a cute YA, enemies-to-lovers story. Troy, the popular high school football jock, and Allie, the class president, have been complete opposites for years and are paired up to work together in their physics class. Snide comments are made and there’s a lot of bantering between the two but eventually they start to realize there’s more to one another than they once thought. I loved watching the chemistry between Troy and Allie start to grow, and you could really see the feelings starting to develop. They were also both likeable and relatable characters. The reason for my 3 star review was because I found it was a little slow and I had a bit of a hard time really getting into it. (Maybe because it was written in third person? I personally just prefer to read books written in first person, so that’s on me.) Plus, I just wanted a bit more depth to it all. There wasn’t much drama or excitement or anything. Also, the only two characters I actually really liked in the book were Troy and Allie. The rest I didn’t care for at all (until maybe Caden in the last chapter or so?). However, I liked the storyline and I always enjoy a happily ever after! :)
****I was given a copy from the author in exchange for a review. **** So here's my raw, real, unfiltered, honest review: (CONTAINS MILD SPOILERS)
This was a cute story, simple, easy read. It was fun, and a quick light read that left me feeling happy, but also wanting more. While this is a college romance, I felt more like it should've been a high school romance. I wanted MORE. More angst, more sparks, more arguments, more tension, just more. It was also a bit confusing sometimes when the author would change POV's. Could've been indicated more clearly.
I just feel like this was a little on the surface. I would've loved for the author to dive in more into Allie's "condition" and her anxiety attacks and the procedure she went through. It's mentioned from the very start and we get to know only in the last chapter and we just get a brief explanation but nothing more. It would've been interesting to see more on the why and how of it all.
Also, while Allie is in a relationship throughout the book, I felt like Caden was only just a best friend and not a boyfriend. We only ever see a brief kiss or just a kiss on the forehead. It kinda felt like all the "action" was with Troy and even then it was light. I understand that Allie was confused, didn't really know what she wanted, but it felt like a teenage romance and not a college romance.
I expected much more steamy scenes and content from this book. I enjoyed the story, I love sports/college romances. I liked that Allie tried to make changes for the athletes of the school (AKA for Troy basically) as the president of the student council. I liked that she realized she wanted more and made the first move to kiss Troy. I love that she was strong but also insecure and trying to keep face in front of everyone. I really liked her character. As for Caden, he was bland and felt like a friend and nothing more, not her supposed boyfriend. And what about Troy? He was your typical jock, but again kind of... muted. I hoped for more. More excitement, more confrontation.
While I expected and wished I got more from this book, it takes nothing away from how cute and light and nice the story was. I enjoyed reading it and it only took me 2 days because I wanted to know what happened in the end! It was a fast read for sure. It left me feeling happy, but just like there was a little something missing.
This is a story about acceding to peer pressure and peer expectations but eventually finding the strength to stand up for yourself. It's a wonderful story. In the beginning, Troy is the stereotypical, jerk jock. Allie is the stereotypical intellectual. The introductory chapters of this story are a bit monotonous but it does pick up before long. There are a few bragging scenes which were uncomfortable to read. It does have a good, solid ending.
So this book was lengthy (which is good) and it took us through a lot. A hero I despised from the beginning and a heroine who already has a boyfriend. Our heroine brought out the worst in our hero but I grew to like him. I definitely didn’t like the almost cheating factor nor the player vibes of our hero and his posse. There was a bit of a personal mystery to this book that intrigued me. So, while I didn’t enjoy all of the factors of this enemies to lovers romance, I did still enjoy a good portion of it. There is some language but the relationship between our hero and heroine is a sweet one. This is my first book from this author.
It's not a bad story but something about it just wasn't the right fit for me. I had a really hard time getting into it and almost stopped reading a few times. It didn't get better but it still wasn't fantastic. I'd probably rate it 3.75 stars.
One thing I didn't like (and maybe it's just me) is that it seemed more like a high school setting in a college book. My college was nothing like that. The way things were handled was much more like a high-school handles things than a college. So it was just strange to me.
This story was a very good YA romance. It was fun, quirky, and just the perfect read overall. The characters, while it did take a while to warm up to, were fun nevertheless. The story was cute though a bit slow. I think the side characters and Allie’s condition could have a bit more attention. Lastly, I wasn’t completely gripped and I wish there was a bit more engagement. Besides that, this story was incredible and had very FEW minor details that needed correction.
I received a review copy and am voluntarily leaving a review.
First off I gave this rating because there isn't a half star otherwise it would be 2 and a half. It was enemies to lovers kinda. But I wouldn't really say sweet romance to me it was like they were in middle school or maybe HS DEFINITELY not college it just didn't click I don't even know what to say really The MFC is a B***h we find out at the end what her issue is MMC is the stereotypical jock at first but he falls first and was my favorite in this book
A true slow burn romance. I liked the story and definitely didn’t expect the ending, what a twist. I found it really slow in the beginning but it also brought me back to high school with the parties and different cliques. I felt bad that Allie felt she had to hide who she was.
I'm glad that this takes place in highschool rather than college, the characters feel too young for college. Ally was super annoying to me, in some ways I could relate, but her know it all attitude got on my nerves. Troy was slightly annoying because he was the stereotypical teen boy jock, but that's the stereotyped teen boy jock. They can be extremely shallow on the outside. Overall a quick to read back and forth romance.

I really liked both Troy and Allie and even though they were from very different social groups I thought they worked well together once they got over their prejudices of each other. I didn’t exactly like how the different groups were so rude to each other. I thought it was a bit too much. I really didn’t like reading about teens drinking. I wish Allie’s medical issues were explained a little better. I was a bit confused.
A romantic story that follows Allie and Troy as they navigate through the ups and downs of life. I received a free copy of the book and this is my voluntary and honest review.
