When Verity inveigles the new vicar into a sham engagement, their relationship isn’t the only thing that’s fake...

Verity Hayes has the soul of an artist—but her heart belongs to the Reverend Mr. Henry Crofton. She’s tried everything she can think of to prove how perfect they are for each other, but he barely seems to notice she’s alive. With her family of noted patriots about to be run out of town by invading British Regulars, Verity has only days to show Henry she’s the perfect woman for him. Even if it means sacrificing who she really is.

Henry Crofton came to the colonies to try to reclaim those poor lost sheep who’d strayed from their king. He never anticipated finding the most beautiful creature he’d ever seen. Despite his attachments back home, he finds himself paying more and more attention to Miss Verity Hayes.

When Miss Hayes needs rescuing from her family’s marriage machinations, Henry does the only right thing: he agrees to her proposal of a fake engagement. But Verity is hiding the truth: the family pressure, like her personality, is totally fabricated. Can she find the courage to come clean before he finds out the hard way?

This is the sixth installment of the Sisters of the Revolution series. I have recently started reading this series and it is absolutely wonderful! This is Verity and Henry's story. Both have tough life choices to make and struggle with family commitments. Henry is captivated by Verity and thinks very highly of her, so when she asks him to help her, he agrees. However, she is not being honest with him and is hiding something from him. Verity in turn is in love with Henry, but will her lies ruin any chance they might have at happiness? This was such a well-written and intriguing story which caught my attention right from the start. The story was brought to life with the brilliant writing and attention to detail that was given by Ms. Glenn. A nice, smooth storyline with plenty of plot twists along the way and well-developed characters made this a most interesting and enjoyable read. I am happy to recommend this book!

I really, really liked the book, and I fevered and suffered with Verity right down to the last page. Because Verity is hopelessly in love with Henry Crofton, the vicar of her parish but unfortunately he doesn't seem to notice her at all.
I liked both the slow development of Verity and Henry's relationship and the personal development of their characters. How they slowly get to know each other and the first bond of affection is tied, albeit unintentionally and unplanned by Henry. I enjoyed reading this.
I found the writing style marvelous and it really immersed me in the time and world of the War of Independence.
I especially liked the intrigues spun by Amity - that definitely got my pulse racing!
I can recommend the book, especially to those who enjoy Regency Romance.

A couple of years have passed since Constance Hayes' marriage and Verity has grown up a bit since then. Thankfully her family and friends no longer have to put up with her plays after a would-be-suitor gave her a scathing review and was quite cruel about it. Since then, Verity has decided to make some changes and is trying to become a better Christian woman. That's the kind of woman that a clergyman would marry right? Since Constance's marriage, Verity's been trying to get Henry Crofton to notice her--changing her style of dress, reading a book he loaned her, but nothing seems to work.

Henry Crofton is a loyalist. He only plans to be in the colonies until his replacement arrives, then he plans to return to England. When Verity Hayes claims her family's trying to marry her off to anyone as long as the man is a Patriot Henry agrees to her fake-engagement scheme to ward off any more distasteful suitors.

Poor Verity (BTW verity means "the quality or state of being true or real") seems to get herself into one situation after another with her untruths. Her family is under the assumption that she bakes which leads to some funny scenes with her learning to bake. She really did have feelings for Henry, but unfortunately thought she'd have to change everything about herself to get him to develop feelings for her. I liked how she truly tried to learn to make bread and bake cakes, and I found it very touching and such an unselfish act when she loaned the dress she'd so lovingly embroidered to another young lady for her wedding.

Henry is doing his best as a Reverend. Far more than his direct superior does in trying to help the poor and struggling in the area. I had to put reality aside to believe that a clergyman would agree to a fake engagement, but this is fiction after all. I was glad Henry was able to look past Verity's lie, to see her true character, and forgive her so they could move on and have a real relationship.

I like how the author weaves historical facts and events going on at that time in history into these stories. I'm looking forward to reading Mercy's story. She's the youngest of the Hayes sisters. I was given a complimentary copy from the author for review. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Romance in a troubled time and place

This next story in this series is just as exciting and engrossing as those before it. Loved Mercy and Henry's story. They seemed an unlikely match, but we're perfect for each other. Both learned lessons about themselves as well as each other. Finding happiness in the midst of a war is a story worth reading. Recommended highly!
