A late winter night in a crime-ridden neighborhood of Chicago.

Shots ring out.

Officer down.

Assailant unknown.

Due to the tricky nature of the incident, the Deputy Superintendent calls in tough-as-nails Lieutenant Maggie Delaney and her GUTS team to investigate.

When the clues point to a vicious mob killer nicknamed “The Meat Cleaver,” Maggie fears her past might be coming back to haunt her.

Is this revenge?

If her hunch is right, her team must stop this madman before everyone close to her ends up dead.

This time it’s not business. It’s personal.

Because I did not like the Miranda Steele character in "Someone Else's Daughter," I decided totry a different series by the same author for comparison. WOW - huge difference in story flow and character types! Maggie Delaney exhibits some personal softness with her tough cop image. Her elite GUYS unit has television's "The Closer" and "Major Crimes" feel to the investigative procedures with a bit of television's detective Jane Rizzoli's attitude and family situations. The author does a much better job of weaving Maggie's personal/family life events and issues with her professional responsibilities than in the prior book I read. Some members of the GUTS team are better developed than others, but the characters may be fleshed out more in subsequent books. Bryce Brooks seems just too good to be true: too accomplished, too available, too talented, too convenient, too loving. The final few chapters seem a rush to neatly tie up loose ends after concluding the murderer search. I did like the spiritual connection between Maggie and her deceased father, a cop killed in the line of duty. Overall, I found this an engaging, entertaining read.

Couldn't put it down.

Wonderful beginning of a new series. Maggie tries to balance her professional life as the head of the top cop squad with her family life and comes up short in everyone's eyes. In spite of no support from family, Maggie's strength of character and her hand-picked team manage to bring down the head of the main crime family in Chicago. But the work doesn't stop there. Maggie has to figure our who is coming after people close to her. I love the character development and action in this novel . Stayed up way too late to finish it and am going right on to the next book in this series. May this series be a long one.

I am up to date on the Miranda and Parker series and as I love Lindsey Lanier, I wanted more and I thoroughly enjoyed Chicago Cop. Continue this series as well. Do a story focusing on Jackie using the whole team. We need Bryse and Maggie to get married and so much more. What about the FBI guy. You are brilliant and can do so much with these characters, just like you did with Parker and Miranda. By the way I am ready for another book on those two as well. You have become one of my favorite authors. I would recommend your books to anyone wanting excitement and an excellent story.

Chicago cop story

After reading the Miranda series, I wasn’t sure I would enjoy this book. But I am hooked on Linsey Lanier’s books.

This is a new series about Maggie Delaney. She is the leader of a GUTS squad in Chicago. Her late father was a Chicago policeman and was killed by organized crime. Maggie was able to arrest the head Of this group and get him behind bars. Now they have regrouped and are coming after Maggie.

Fast pace, good characters, good story. Definitely recommend.

another great read from LinseyLanier

I have read most of the stories by this author, the characters are engaging and the stories are gripping. I like the way the characters are slightly older, more rounded with back stories. The book races along with a pace that keeps you gripped. Read and enjoy.
