I’m getting more and more into manhwa these days. I chose this one because it was relatively short (only 92 chapters or so) and completed. It was a very fun ride, the father of the MC is a serial killer but on the outside he looks like the kindest man alive. Towards 30% of the story I was unable to stop reading, very addicting! It’s a cute scary from time to time story, suitable for those looking for a fast-paced, fun, and finished thriller.

Loved the story and the twists..

The emotions that I had while reading.. I am happy that I finished it while my mind is still working..

The story is about a son who lives with a murder ... (His own father)..

I don't recommend this story for soft heart people... DO NOT...

It was mentally torture for me... I want to read something nice now.. 😭

EVERYONE, READ THIS NOW.

I honestly cannot remember the last time I’ve gotten so mind fucked. I’m never recovering from this. So brilliant. The plot was so gripping, unpredictable, dark and twisted, the pacing was literally PERFECT, the dialogue was clever and realistic and don’t even get me started on the CHARACTERS. So complex, so unique, so flawed yet so likable... I never expected to see a work of such quality among webcomics. 10/10 would recommend.

What happens when the girl you like is the next target of your dad, who's a serial killer and you're an accomplice?
This book really said girlboss, gaslight, gatekeep and mass murder. For the most part of the webtoon, I was on the edge waiting to see how things will unfold. Jin Seon's dad was soo messed up, the kid already had enough going on as it is with his school, the bullying and his own trauma- now he had to deal with his stupid crush on this new girl. I found the girl so dumb, I feared she'd get herself killed by her own doing and not Jin Seon's dad. I'm amazed with each chapter that she was alive and doing well. The ending seemed pretty rushed in my opinion, it wrapped way too quickly imo.

4/5 🌟

First volume: Honestly, rereading this is quite the experience. Having everything be so different then the first read because of the extra knowledge I have is so cool.
All the things the father says and does just get new viewpoints. I love it.
The girl is always my fav character. She's so cute and even though she's just to be kind of helpless and cute, I like her anyways.
This is like a 3.7 stars read. I'm giving it four but that's higher then it deserves. It gets a lot better later.

Second volume: I liked this one a lot more. It just develops the whole story a lot more and has some more perspectives and personalities to the sort of flat side characters. The female lead is still a bit bland but she's a sweetheart so I forgive her. The Manny accident part is kind of funny when you know what happens next. Jin's dad is a legend.
5 stars.

Third volume: ewwww. EWWWWWWW. That bitch is so- yuck.
Anyways, this one was tons of fun. Like, creepy fun. I wish Jin killed the glasses girl. I feel zero remorse for her, because her reasoning is just so dumb. "I hate pretty girls" shut up. Shut up right now. I love Kyun a ton (I learned her name!) And although the manhua really wants me to like Manny - a second reread just makes me dislike him all over again. I just don't like him. I don't like his shit.
4.5 stars.

Fourth volume: you'd think shit went down in this volume. When you read it, you think - that's it. Here is the climax. But then you look and you see another whole volume - and you think: "shit."
If that was the purpose of this volume, then it did it's job perfectly. The amount of things that just happen in this are extraordinary. I love this volume a lot. Not my fav (the fifth is definitely the best), but it's great. I love this story, I must say. I really really love this story. I'm just excited to see all that will happen in the next chapters.
5 stars.

Fifth volume: it is the end which made me want to reread this manhua. And, now that I've finished it, I can say that my memory of this ending did not disappoint.
I would not have wished for a better end. It's written so well, that I could just reread it over and over again without getting tired. The plot twist in the end is just so well done, I was shocked the first time reading it, and it made me feel excited even now. I love this story so much, and I have forgotten it for too long.
It's so good. So so so good.
5 stars.

Final score: 4.6, rounded up to five stars.

I'll actually write my reviews for each volume here because I don't really want to get extra books for my reading challenge just for this. The stars I'll give would be the average of all the volumes together.

Edit: after reading Lapvona, I have to lower this to four stars. That was the definitive highlight of that week of reading.

I really enjoyed this. However, I found the conclusion to be unsatisfying. Like I wanted to know more about what happened after that and how Jin Seon lived his life. We also didn't witness his mother's conversation, which I was curious about. That is, however, my sole criticism about it.

And haven't they made something out of it? Kdrama maybe?

Jin Seon is a quiet and reserved boy who feels invisible wherever he goes. He has an unnatural hatred for his father who is extremely kind and well-mannered and he refuses to get close to any of his peers or classmates. His cold and distant demeanor makes him extremely unpopular and the target of hostility, but no one knows that Jin is hiding a dark secret and he only keeps his distance to protect people from getting hurt. Jin is harboring a burden that most children his age couldn’t possibly understand. His kind and well-loved father is a violent, psychopathic serial killer behind closed doors. The title Bastard, was given to him by none other than the father who masquerades as a saint in public.

The story begins with a dream of Jin being pushed off a building, a repressed memory that he believes to be his father trying to kill him when he was a toddler. After getting into a fight in school later that day, he’s brought to a hospital by a friendly girl named Kyun Yoon. Instead of being grateful, Jin is extremely hostile and tells her to stay away from him after learning that his father is on his way to pick him up from the hospital. This is the first time the wolf in sheep’s clothing reveals his true colors. Jin only sent the girl away to keep his father’s eyes off her.

Jin develops a soft spot for Kyun because she’s the first person in his entire life that bothered to show him an ounce of kindness. Unfortunately, Jin’s father also develops an interest in his son’s young classmate, and the story transforms into an intense psychological cat and mouse game between a killer father and his son. Little does his father know, Jin also carries darkness within him, and he displays sociopathic tendencies when pushed beyond his limits.

The story manages to balance romance, slice of life and extremely dark psychological thriller elements very well. Jin rebels against his maniacal father, forming an alliance with a vicious bully named Manny who teaches him to fight like he means to kill so he can learn to protect a girl from becoming his father’s next victim.

Watching Jin try to break free from his dark shell while constantly struggling with the haunting realization that he has more in common with his wicked father than he would care to admit was a thrilling experience all the way through. There’s a shocking number of plot twists and Jin’s struggle between light and darkness had me on the edge of my seat at times because I found myself worrying just how far he would and sometimes wouldn’t go.

Not many people think about what it’s like for children to grow up with a serial killer in the house. Can you imagine if your father was Ted Bundy, Ed Gein or Jeffrey Dahmer? How would you react to learning what they’re truly like when you’ve only known them as charming and friendly family men? What type of trauma would this inflict on a child’s mental and emotional well being? How can you live a normal life with the reputation of being the child of a demented killer stamped on your forehead? Bastard tackles all of these uncomfortable questions by showing Jin’s struggle of learning how to communicate and develop healthy relationships with his peers while also wrestling with the trauma inflicted on him by his father.

Though he can seem like a hopeless fool at times and a sadistic bastard at others, it’s hard not to root for Jin to overcome the darkness, both inside and outside of himself.

Guuuyyys this was so good!

I would have finished this in one sitting if I could omg. The artwork, the storyline, the realistic scenarios, the ending, it was all so amazing.

I never thought I'd be creeped out by one of these webtoons, but this one was a work of art. The other webtoon this author has out is even creepier than this one! I can seriously rave about this all day.

One of my favorite webtoons so far. 5 stars.

4.75 stars!

It's 1:00 am and I just finished it and I don't know how what to feel!
This was probably one of the darkest, mind-bending things I've ever read.
There were twists right from the first chapter and the author managed to drop some serious twists at the finale.
Every single character was twisted in their own way. Great character development and I'm satisfied with how everyone got their ending except for
The antagonist, Jin's dad, is easily one of the top 5 best written villans of all time. I absolutely hated him but there were many moments where I couldn't help but be impressed with his thinking

The final chapters had too many feels in it. It'll take some time for me to recover. Right from the start, the story was brutal. Seems like the author is almost fearless and doesn't hold back...

Um, one last thing that I wanna say is that the author of this manhwa is brilliant and I'm looking forward to read the other works by them.

This was truly an awesome psychological thriller that can f*ck with your mind (plus the artwork totally suits the story). If you're for something like that to read, I highly recommend Bastard.

This is the only site I could find that has no missing chapters. (you can also read it on the Webtoon app.)

despite being utterly terrified by that one panel four episodes in and will probably have that one image haunt me for the rest of my life, i absolutely //loved// every second of this webtoon from start to end and has got to be one of the best ones i've read next to dice.

the plot of this story is so brilliantly crafted together; you really don't know what to expect from the get go, once you think you know what's going to happen next, it turns out to something else you're not expecting. to say everything isn't what it seems to be is a total understatement when it comes to this. and that's what makes reading this so tense because you have no idea what's going to be thrown at you. the psychological aspects used were done so amazingly along with all the gruesome and gory action scenes throughout. i think i was screaming oh my god and breaking into a sweat about every ten minutes because of how much i was losing my mind in the best way possible. the art especially has got to be one of the best things about this because of how it brings out emotions (mostly feeling scared) so well, from wanting to cry because of an emotional scene to feeling paranoid at night because of how disturbing some of the characters become.

jin's dad has seriously got to be one of the scariest characters i've ever had to read about. he's two-faced, extremely good at manipulating others to bring situations in his favor, calculating, always seems to be at the right place at the right time, vile, downright creepy for a good portion of the story, and pretty much a terrifying psychopath. what makes it all even worse that despite being the person who he is, he's normalized and justified his actions and not afraid of doing the most. his character was so eerily fascinating even though you hate him.

jin himself has such an amazing character development throughout and i'm so glad he was able to overcome his obstacles and be able to move forward with his life despite living through actual hell his whole life. kyun proved to be an even better character than i thought and she's so sweet and her grandpa's the cutest.

the trip that i had reading this all in one was a total crazy one that messes up your mind because of all the twists and turns, the gore scenes, and the ending especially, but also makes you see how people can see the world in such a messed up way and i'm definitely going to go back one day and go through the stress all over again and kinda need everyone to read this so they can relate.

I wanted to read a short manhwa before I started the fantasy trilogy I'm reading right now and looking at the popularity of this Webtoon, I decided to dive into it without having any second thoughts.

But it was a mistake. The plot is gruelling and is fucked up in so many ways. Maybe because it's so realistic that it makes a reader uncomfortable while they're reading it?

There's only 93 episodes and everytime I read, I had to take a break after 3-4 episodes. It's one of the best thriller webcomics that's for sure but unless one isn't a fan of psychological thrillers about serial killers who after murdering women do fucked up things, I'd never suggest this to them to read it if they don't want to.

I started this two days ago late at night not knowing what I was getting into. Just glad that I wasn't alone while I'm reading it 😐😐

I've nothing really else to say without spoiling what goes on in the story so I'll just leave it here.

If this gets an anime adaptation in the future, I guarantee Dong-Soo Seon and Shou Tucker will tie as the #1 worst fathers to ever exist in the anime world. Literally, Mr Seon himself messed up Jin big time for making him as his accomplice. He was definitely a smart dangerous criminal for getting away with murder. Ok now he has put me off with CEOs now lol...

Even though I didn't think romance should be in this type of manhwa, surprisingly Kyun wasn't that bad than your typical "damsel in distress" girl. Although I personally thought she wasn't worth being in the story. She was annoying at times.

While Jin and Manny were actually pretty good characters! I was so sad that the father killed Manny and that foreigner dude like whyyyyyyyy mannnnnmnn?!?!?!😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Really good intense manhwa to watch out for folks, you gotta read it cause psycho daddy can find you 😶😶😶

Kidding just read it, especially if you liked Sweet Home!

5⭐️ Review:

This was my second read of this and it still continues to be a favorite of mine.

The story is phenomenal. It has so much depth and detail strung throughout it that I was always on the edge of my seat anticipating what would happen next.

It’s about our main character Jin whose father is a serial killer and he is an accomplice. The story unravels with Jin wanting to stop his father, but struggling to come to terms with what that could entail. Should he kill his own father? Should he report him? But then what happens to him? As the story progresses, more questions are raised and eventually answered.

If you like physiological thrillers then I highly recommend!

”The world I live in is always rainy like this. But since I don't have an umbrella, I've always lived in the rain. It's cold, sticky, and easy to catch a cold. I may be able to head inside and avoid the rain for a minute, but in the end, I have to go back outside.“

I would recommend this to anyone who likes Manga, Manhwa, or web-comics in general.

I would not recommend this for young children or people who don't like violence.

Plot - This is the type of story that I feel like I can't describe without ruining the experience for the reader. All I'll say is that this is a very dark story line with lots of gore. So, if you are squeamish this might not be the story for you.

The Good:

Hwang Young Chan does a great job of keeping the reader off balance as you proceed through the storyline. He masterfully traipses the line between cliche, predictable, and completely unexpected.

The story itself is well written and interesting. Fans of manga and manhwa are probably used to a certain tone and predictability in their comics. Bastard manages to have some expected tropes while subverting and perverting others to keep the story in an interesting moral gray area.

The Bad:

I only have a few minor gripes with the 93 part web-comic series. Due to the serialized format, the story feels like it sometimes spiral-graphs between some of the releases. In other words, some of the comics seem like they are rehashing previous themes and ideas without progressing the main story or adding new context or insight into anything.

It was also sometimes difficult to keep track of some of the details about the main characters. For example I was frequently confused about ages. Sometimes the students seemed to be at the end of high school and other times they seemed like freshmen. This could just have been due to cultural differences between Korea and the US.

Setting my mood upside down. Spending one night and ine halfday to read all the 98 chapters. In the end, tears were flowing. Although I feel there is some inconsistency on the plot regarding the dad's true scheme and the boy's altered memory. I mean, scientifically, could psychopathy traits be cured by losing your memory? Means genetic mental health could be fixed by throwing away some memories??? Really?

But I like how Jin Seo becomes stronger with the help of Kyung Yoon. Can love really cure people with psychopathy traits??? It is still questionable, coz don't they have no ability to feeling love at all???

And my favorite part is how the authors are still able to insert some comedic and heart-warming moments after one terror ended.
