Determined to protect his family from further chaos, he sets out to uncover who is spreading these dangerous claims. Most Biblical scholars agree that Jesus’s brother James became a leader of the early Christian church in Jerusalem. There are New Testament references to Jesus, his brothers, and sisters. In this fictionalized account, Jesus’s siblings, led by James, must face life after their brother’s death. The Bible teaches that Jesus’s brothers did not believe he was the Messiah. Only after his death, did James become a believer.

I found this account of life in Jerusalem in the days following Jesus’s death hard to put down. There is danger, intrigue, and most especially, hope, as his followers mourn his death then find comfort and renewed faith after his resurrection. There are many Biblical references meshing historical elements with the fictional storyline. Lazarus and his sisters, especially Mary, also feature strongly in the plot.

Descriptions are vivid and the characters well developed. I was especially touched by James’s relationship with his sisters Assia and Salome. Most of all, I loved watching James come to the realization that Jesus is his Lord and Savior. I can’t wait to read more in this series!

A new to me author and an interesting concept. 7 books for 7 siblings of Jesus. We know he had at least 6 siblings since the 4 brothers' names are listed and mention is made of 'sisters' (so at least 2) (Matthew 13:55; Mark 6:3).

The story drew me in and kept me reading. Very interesting to see JJ's take on the Biblical evidence we have. I look forward to reading more.

Another great series by Jenifer Jennings! I always wondered just how Jesus's siblings would have taken him and this book was spot on. I love her writing style and how she can make her characters just the way you thought they were in the Bible. This is a must read and I can't wait to read about the rest of Jesus's siblings in the coming books!

This very real to life fiction was so well written by Jenifer Jennings, I couldn’t read it fast enough! James is now the Patriarch of Jesus’s family since He and His mother, Mary are living in Jerusalem and He is nearing His crucifixion. James has kept the family of six siblings home, at Nazareth, ever since Jesus declared that He was The Messiah and started teaching “heresy” and causing danger to their family. But, it has been three years and the siblings want to go celebrate Passover in Jerusalem, and secretly, Assia hopes to see Jesus. James is set on bringing their mother home with the rest of them. It was difficult but they found a place to accommodate all of them for a reasonable fee at the home of a man called Benjamin and his daughter, Elissa. The brothers and sisters hear rumors that Jesus has been healing people from all over and that crowds follow Him everywhere He goes. James’ headaches get worse every time he thinks about this and wonders how this family is going to escape the city without harm. Then, the worst news of all comes: Jesus has been captured and has been crucified! He HAS to find their Ima. Elissa is excited to find out they are related to Jesus but keeps quiet when she detects that Jesus’s siblings may not feel the same toward Him as she does. When James tries to find his mother, Elissa let’s him know that she can lead him to the home of Theodotos, where all of Jesus’s followers are congregating. But, Mary refuses to come with James. She says that Jesus told John that she was his mother now and, as such, was his responsibility! James is fighting mad, his head is throbbing, he barely makes it through the fruit stands, when Theodotos stops him and says The Sanhedrin want to question him! He is scared to death, afraid they will also crucify him, just for being related to Jesus. But, he tells them that he didn’t believe anything that Jesus said was true and also that he hadn’t spoken to him in three years. They let him go. They are to be in mourning for one full week, Jewish law. But, on Sunday morning, footsteps come rushing to them, and it is Mary, Lazarus’ sister, telling them that Jesus is ALIVE! They don’t believe it, or maybe some want to but don’t know what James would say if he knew they even entertained the thought. This goes on for days with people witnessing to them that others have seen him alive. It is breaking James’ heart to go back to Nazareth, not because of Jesus, but because of a certain girl named Elissa…Then, a day or two before they leave Jerusalem, James is walking alone and a bright light blinds him, and a voice that he instantly recognizes calls out his name…That is all I’m going to share with you. You MUST get this amazing book for yourself and read of the sights, sounds, and I could even imagine the smells of the early days of Jerusalem and I think you will be able to, as well, and totally immerse yourself in the days of the crucifixion of our Lord and Savior! 🙏♥️🙏♥️

Did you ever wonder how many siblings Jesus may have had? Have you ever wondered what it would have been like to have Jesus as a brother? Jenifer Jennings’ Servant Siblings Series takes a glimpse at what that could be like. The first book in the Servant Siblings Series is called James. James profiles James, the brother Ms. Jennings created to be born after Jesus. James takes place during the celebration of Passover. James has assumed the role of head of the family after Jesus left to fulfill His Ministry and their Mother Mary soon followed after Jesus. The Siblings feel abandoned by Jesus and Mary—not to mention Jesus’ Teachings seem a little “out there”. To celebrate Passover, the Siblings decide to travel to Jerusalem, only to have their trip prolonged due to Jesus’ Crucifixion. Wanting to give Jesus a proper burial and mourning period, James seeks answers to Jesus’ Death. As James is uncovering answers, he learns that Jesus may be the Messiah after all.

James is the first book I’ve read by Jenifer Jennings. I thought the idea of the story was interesting and it truly did make me wonder what Jesus’ Siblings would have thought of Him. My heart hurt for the Siblings and I could easily see why they didn’t Believe. I admired James for the way he took care of his Siblings and watched out for them. As I was reading, I could feel the weight that was on James’ shoulders regarding what James and His Family was going through on every page. I love how I was transported back to the Bible Times and Events, traveling the streets with James as he is seeking answers about Jesus’ Death and protecting those James loves. I thought that it was an unique avenue that Ms. Jennings’ took in a Biblical Fiction series with the Servant Siblings Series, since their is not much known about Jesus’ Family itself. I thought that the Family’s livelihood was interesting. I thought the way Joseph, their Father, died was unique and different than what I ever imagined, even though I know James is a work of Biblical Fiction. (Read James to get all the details!) I found myself often wondering and questioning that if I was a sibling, would I Believe Jesus was the Son of God or I would think the opposite? I thought James was a great intro into the Servant Siblings Series and would like to see what else Ms. Jennings does with the Siblings she has created. If you are looking for an escape that takes you back to Bible Times and gives you a glimpse of the way things could have happened, then I highly recommend James by Jenifer Jennings!

Have you read James by Jenifer Jennings? What did you think of the book?

I would like to thank Jenifer Jennings for giving me a copy of James to review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

James – by Jenifer Jennings

The first of seven novels about Jesus’ siblings, the extremely talented Jenifer Jennings has outdone herself.

Jenifer Jennings has created seven novels around Jesus’ seven supposed siblings. We know from Scripture the names of his brothers – James, Joses, Jude and Simon and we know they had sisters, but nothing further other than that James became a leader of the church and Jude was also fairly well known as a church leader.

Sticking to Scripture as much as possible, and using her imagination, and detailed research into the times, Jenifer Jennings has come up with an enthralling and possible tale of how James turned from opposing and not understanding his brother’s ministry to being an ardent proponent of the same.

I liked her characterization of Mary and James – his agony over being thrust into the position of pater familias in the absence of Jesus and after their father’s death is delineated very well, maybe even in excess. The bond between the siblings becomes clear and how Mary’s choice to be with her eldest son and support his ministry, causes tension within the family.

At the end of the day, this book is well worth reading and buying. You will enjoy this fleshing out of the character of James is in keeping with what we know of him later as the elder of the church: a man concerned with the practice of one’s faith. I’m looking forward to reading her other books on the siblings. I only hope I can source them all within budget.

While I've known that Jesus struggled with his family, I never really thought about it from their perspective, and what a thought provoking premise Jenifer Jennings gives us! I have been a long time fan of Jennifer with her other series, Faith finders (6 books) and the Rebekah series of 3, you have not read them yet, I highly recommend them.
Biblically, we know that James became a early church leader after Jesus death, so how did he go from possibly being resentful, embarrassed, confused and not understanding or believing in his brother being the Messiah? Jenifer fleshes out those possibilities in a believable manner.
Her research is noted with her deft and detailed illustration of Jewish culture in the lives of the various characters, the religious pressures they must have felt to conform to the majority of those who did not believe Jesus was the Messiah, frustration and embarrassment that Jesus didn't conform and the responsibility for the rest of his family.
The book realistically depicts the transformation and character development of James and his siblings from doubters and unbelievers to leaders in the early church.
There is tension, intrigue, danger, romance and underlying it all, family love, and Jesus healing them all.
The ending was a bit abrupt for me, I would have liked more of Jesus and James interaction, yet I understand it is the 1st of a series.
A bright 4 stars and a must read for biblical history readers!

A very well written book by Jenifer Jennings which definitely gave me a lot to think on, both as I read and when I had finished. An interesting storyline that I just decided to read and enjoy the story. The author has presented Jesus with 7 siblings and this particular story is about the second son (after Jesus), James. The story lays out the family's lives in Nazareth with just the siblings - their father has passed and their mother is following Jesus. The seven of them are traveling with a caravan to Jerusalem to celebrate passover. As they are entering the city they come upon their brother, Jesus, riding on a donkey as palms are laid out on the road before him. The characters were so vivid and well done that they grabbed at my heart strings and I was touched by the love of these siblings for each other. Although this is not based on many factually occurences , I did enjoy the story, the timing with our Lord's passion on Sunday, and I was deeply moved by the conclusion.

I did receive an ARC copy of this book, but this is my voluntary, honest and completely personal review.

This book is a fantastic read as you approach Easter.

I've never considered Christ's siblings quite like this before. There were so many historical facts and nuggets found in this book that really opened my eyes to the first century world.

The thing I appreciated most about this book was the male POV. I'm a biblical fiction fan, but sometimes I can get tired of the female POV (especially when it seems to always involve some fictional romance). This book has a strong and believable male POV and doesn't contain much romance (there is some but it isn't even remotely pertinent to the main story). That doesn't make it better than other biblical fiction books, but it's refreshing to see a biblical fiction not have to rely on the fictional romance.

Loved every minute of this read and highly recommend it.

Jenifer Jennings has given us a glimpse of life during the time that Jesus walked on this earth by giving us stories about his siblings. The first book in this series introduces us to James and it is a page turner, cannot put it down read. Great character development and rich with history of ancient Israel make this a five-star reading. We know from Scripture that the siblings of Jesus did not believe He was the Messiah and Ms. Jennings has been able to really invoke those feelings of frustration and unbelief. Scripture and fiction are woven together expertly and even Mary, Martha and Lazarus play an important part in this story. It was sat forward in my seat with anticipation waiting for James to realize who Jesus was.
I highly recommend this book to fans of Biblical fiction and can hardly wait to meet the rest of the siblings.

This is a great start to the series. James, who is the oldest remaining sibling at home, escorts his family to Jerusalem for the Passover. He is very stressed by the strain his older brother Jesus's and his mother's absense has caused to the siblings. After Jesus's death, the siblings hear many of the stories and sightings of his resurrection, but James struggles to believe.

I have read a couple of the books further into the series, and I found this one a weaker entry. It is the first in the series, however, and characters and storylines are developed further in subsequent books. It's a great entry into the series.

This is a new series by Biblical fiction author Jenifer Jennings. We read about Jesus in scripture but don't really know much about His siblings. The Bible states that Mary and Joseph had other children after Jesus was born but doesn't give any details. Jenifer has written a wonderful story featuring the siblings. She has imagined what these brothers and sisters may have thought, felt and lived. What must it have been like to have the Messiah as a brother!?! I invite you to dive in and see what life may have been like to be a part of Jesus' family. This first in series focuses on James.

This pulled me in from the beginning. With wonderful characters, inspirational, and easy to read. I liked the details and it was a page turner. Even though this is fictional, it brings you to that time period and makes you think of how they lived and what they went through. I have not read a Biblical Fiction book before but this was well written and has me wanting to read more. I highly recommend this book.

“You are like that chisel, James. You think of yourself as broken, but really you have not even begun the work prepared for you.” What a beautiful line. From the conflicting anger, turmoil, and grief James experienced to the joy, love, forgiveness, and grace given. It was so neat to experience how one of Jesus’ siblings could’ve struggled through His physical time on this world and trying to understand what was happening. Riveting and captivating, a must read.

James, my tenth read from Christian author Jenifer Jennings. A well-written fictionalized expansion of Biblical times focusing on Jesus' brother James in the days/weeks following Jesus' crucifixion. I’ll definitely be reading more by this author and look forward to her next book! (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Great Read

The story built around Scripture is about the history of the death and resurrection. It weaves a story of the tumultuous times the family of Jesus went through. And finally the belief of James that Jesus indeed lives. It is a story to just sit and read straight through.

An interesting glimpse behind the curtain at what it might have been to be the brother of Jesus Christ.

I was intrigued by the variety of personalities among the siblings and found myself eager to make it to James’s point of conversion.

One star gone because the book ended minutes after that point in time. It didn’t feel resolved, and James’s long-held animosity fell aside too simply.

This was a very interesting look at what life was like for Jesus' family at the very end of His life and the time after His resurrection. The author does a great job making the characters real, with real emotions, real problems, real doubts. I enjoyed seeing how James developed, and I look forward to continuing the story with the next books.

This was an interesting one. I enjoyed the writing and storytelling it was just a bit jarring for me at times as it’s not how I’d ever pictured Jesus’s family. I just had to keep reminding myself it was fiction. So at times I found it an enjoyable read and at other times uncomfortable. In the end I decided I will read more as I enjoy Jennings storytelling.

The brothers and sisters of Jesus become " real" in this story. The anguish over losing their brother, then the slow belief that He was the Messiah is portrayed like the dawn breaking after night.
I was gifted this book by the author, but my review is my own thoughts and reflections. I truly enjoyed reading it and plan to continue the series.

Great Book

It was interesting how James was portrayed. I could feel his frustration and anger in places. But I was confused about the family not being carpenters, but masonaries.

I had never heard of Jenifer Jennings when I discovered the book James on Amazon. It is the first book in the Servant Siblings Series which is a fictional telling of the lives of Jesus siblings immediatly before and right after the Crucifiction. Jame is Jesus' half sibling, the next in line according to age. He has the weight of the world on his shoulders as he tries to lead the family after Joseph dies and Mary follows Jesus in His earthly ministry. He is resentful and does not believe that Jesus is anything more than a charleton.

This was a good story of what it may have been like to be Jesus, half brother. Would you believe the tales of your brother being conceived by god? His performing miracles, raising people from the dead while also stirring up the religeous leaders? Join James as he leads his siblings to Jerusalem to observe the Holy days.

So grab your favorite beverage and settle in for a good read.

All thoughts are my own.
