n a Nutshell: A decent short story about lost and rediscovered love. An interesting start and end but goes farfetched in between. Would have worked better with more development.

Story Synopsis:
Seventy-three-year-old Sebastian and his sixty-eight-year-old wife Jaya have just celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. However, on what should have been a day of joy and celebration, Sebastian discovers that the Jaya he loved no longer exists and that their marriage is more like a steady habit than a love story anymore. When this realisation hits him, he inadvertently sets off a chain of events that might end up putting his marriage in trouble.
The story comes to us through the limited third-person perspective of Sebastian.

On the pro side:
✔ A quick story at just 25 pages. The start was especially interesting, and one part of the end was sweet.

✔ Unusual lead characters – it’s nice to see love explored from the geriatric perspective. The limited number of characters ensures that our focus stays on the central duo and not on other family members such as kids or grandkids.

✔ Sebastian being a retired insurance appraiser is incorporated decently in the story with his habit of assessing risks and returns, though there’s a notable exception in this depiction, which ended up diluting its value.

✔ There are some cute illustrations, not something I expected in short fiction.

However,
❌ I was expecting a backstory somewhat like that gorgeous four-minute reel at the beginning of the animated movie ‘Up’. The backstory of Sebastian and Jaya is barely touched upon, which is a shame because their office romance with the added angle of being an inter-faith relationship could have been explored very well. The complications of such a relationship fifty years ago would have been many, but they get brushed aside by a single sentence. Even their golden anniversary party hardly creates any vibes, whether warm or cold.

❌ The middle of the story is quite farfetched. I can’t imagine the risk-averse Sebastian acting that instinctively. And I can’t bring myself to forgive him for what he did. I felt really sorry for Alicia and wondered how the angle of ‘God works in mysterious ways’ could be applied to her experience.

❌ There are some depictions of a church wedding and interaction with a priest and so on. Sorry to say but most of the Catholic rep is inaccurate, possibly written by taking inspiration from Bollywood and Hollywood movies. Hollywood anyway shouldn’t be used as a foundation for Indian Christian stories as common Christian denominations in the USA (such as Baptist or Methodist or Presbyterian or LDS) are not at all common in India. And Bollywood shouldn’t be used as a reference because… well, everyone knows how accurate Bollywood is! Scenes such as “You may kiss the bride” and having a wedding rehearsal in church are not at all the norm here. Please do your homework better, dear author!

I have seen this story getting praised by many on Facebook, so I am quite disappointed at how this turned out. It had promise, that’s for sure, but the middle led to an event so idiotic that there was no saving my experience.

Quite a few reviewers have found this funny, so maybe I am just looking at the whole thing in a wrong way, but I simply can’t bring myself to see what happened as funny – it is a superficial assessment and ignores all the deep-rooted problems in Sebastian’s character and the negative repercussions of his actions on the other characters. It’s not a story of deep love but of selfish short-sighted love.

That’s just my two bits resulting entirely from irritation. Do feel free to try the story for yourself and make up your own mind.

2 stars.

Mr and Mrs Pinto, written by Aqil N and illustrated by Ashik N, is a cute little story of Sebastian and Jaya who have been married for 50 years now. However, their love fizzles out in the due course of time as is the norm with most marriages. Would they find love in each other ever again?

Barely in 25 pages, 'Mr and Mrs Pinto' manages to bring a smile to the readers' faces. With a refreshing plotline and absolutely engaging writing, this book gives us an insight into the institution of marriages. It goes on to portray how love cannot be solely responsible for a happy and successful relationship. This is also what I personally believe in. If you want a relationship to survive the test of time, fill it with respect and commitment.

I thoroughly enjoyed this short story and Mr Pinto's characters. And old man of over 70 years, stuck in his past, trying to find love at a wedding after the anniversary! Lovely premise. Not to mention, the end left me sweetly surprised and as much as I could not connect the dots, I'd say, Amen to that!

If you've time to spare for a heartwarming short story, read this one.

It's a quick heartwarming read with cute illustrations. The illustrations felt like cherry on the cake. One can finish reading it within 30 minutes. When I say heartwarming I totally mean it, I started reading this story last night before going to bed and had completed 60% of it. The story helped me have a calm sleep. The first thing in the morning I did today after waking up was continue reading it. By the time I finished it, I had a smile on my face. All I was thinking was God has its own mysterious ways of bringing people together. One doesn't need a big moment/ gesture for love to rekindle between two people, sometimes a small stupid thing is enough.

My favourite thing about the story was how the author showed that a person can fall in love with even the smallest of habits or things of another person. Sometimes the smile is enough to make you fall in love with someone. The story also hints that a happy marriage and a successful marriage are two different things.
Overall, it was a nice, sweet, quick and heartwarming read. If you you are looking for a light and effective read, you should go for this❤️

24 yrs of existence and didn't witness married adults around me hug or let alone hold hands. Indian adults would rather fight infront of kids than show any display of affection. What was the appeal of marriage then? Don't tell me it's the kids, they are just side effects of marriage. All those sitcoms I watched never aligned with the reality , making me think its
just like fantasy books I read, it exists on TV and in my sweet head

As cliche as may it sound, this unromantic did find love at last .To sum it up its like the Romance novels I neglected all my life decided to stomp their feet and join hands to show what I was missing all along. It makes me scream all Ed Sheeran songs at the top of my voice 🎶"Well I found a man, stronger than anyone I know, He shares my dreams, I hope that someday we'll share a home ,I found a love, to carry more than just my secrets,To carry love, to carry children of our own"🎶(guess the song)

On this New year's Eve, the temperature was below zero and we thought it's better to walk aimless in a new city rather than using Google maps and risk freezing our fingers. A couple hand in hand in their 80's offered to show the way to newyear
's fireworks .They chuckled and told me that this year they just decided to get up and watch the fireworks no matter how much their back hurts. This right there, seeped Into my mind, I wanted to be that couple who even in their 80s wants to experience something as small as fireworks

THE BOOK & IT'S THOUGHTS
All the above thoughts flooded when I finished this beautiful illustrated short story about a couple celebrating their 50th anniversary. Just like every typical Indian couples I have watched as a kid, the protagonist in this story stops living for the little things in life and starts living for the kids , doing this well rehearsed marital dance just for the society. It might be just 1796 days but i know marriage is hard work, you can Romanticize it all you want, but at the end of the day you need to put effort. This 20 min read surprisingly made me ponder a lot & was heartwarming at the end. Recommend it #mrandmrspinto #bookreview

Thanks to Ove and Sonja from A Man Called Ove that I have a soft corner for elderly couples. There's something very pure when people who've spent decades together still have that spark alive between them. Even today when I see an elderly couple holding hands, walking together in the park, it just melts my heart. Despite not being a huge fan of the romance genre, seeing the cute cover photo, and being a very short book, I just had to read it.

This 25-page novella is about lost love and how it is found in the most unexpected of ways. Mr. and Mrs. Pinto had a long and successful marriage, it just wasn't a long and happy one - a minor distinction, but one with major implications. Sebastian and Jaya met, fell in love, married, and grew old together. It was the perfect love story until . . . an anniversary party brings their world crashing down, triggering a chain of events that threatens to destroy their marriage. The end is quirky and will leave you surprised. If I had to sum up the entire book in one sentence it'd be, "Regardless of age, people sometimes act crazy in love. (P.S. Won't deny, totally worth it :P)"

Do give it a read if you're looking for a short, heart-warming read with adorable illustrations.

I love watching elderly couples take a walk in the park, sipping tea on their balcony or simply laughing at a joke together. I'm extremely cynical when it comes to love and relationships but watching people who have literally spent decades together and still have the spark of love alive between them warms my heart and turns me into a puddle of mush. There's nothing more innocent and pure to me than watching people with wrinkles on their face and love in their hearts. This is why I wanted to read the book. Looking at the cover gave me the same warm feeling and so did the story.

A short story that explores the themes of lost love and rekindling of the spark that has been snuffed out because of the hardships of life, Mr and Mrs Pinto is a sweet, heartwarming tale that everyone should read.

It's realistic enough because we know how monotonous life can get and how that monotony starts to effect our daily lives and to think about spending the rest of your life with the same person makes us doubtful but the familiarity, the fact that you'd wake up next to the same person everyday and fall in love all over again is exactly the kind of reminder people need, especially today.

The writing is simple and there's not much to say because it's an extremely short read. I wish it were an animated series or something. I loved the illustrations though. They were adorable. I'd recommend it.

Mr and Mrs Pinto is a delightful book that speaks of lost love. Marriages usually get monotonous when you spend decades together. Couples fall into a familiar lull and most often forget why they fell in love in the first place. In this short story, Sebastian Pinto, a man in his seventies ponders over his marriage and how he can no longer find the spark that was snuffed many years ago. He recalls the day he fell in love with his wife, her exuberant laughter and the bond that they shared during the earliest years of their marriage. But now, on their fiftieth wedding anniversary, Sebastian feels disappointed about how his relationship has turned out to be. And then something happens.

When he visits the Church, he spots a young bride who's the spitting image of Jaya and he's instantly filled with memories. All his ideas of reincarnation makes him want to stop the wedding and claim the bride as his Jaya. What follows next is his attempts at stalling the wedding. The book is barely 25 pages long but it's truly a heartwarming read, convincing one to never stop believing in love. Marriage, like everything else can be kept alive if it is done right and Sebastian finds his long lost love in Jaya once again by the end of the story. Reading Mr and Mrs Pinto felt like receiving a warm hug on a chilly day, like one's soft blanket with its familiar scent that's comforting. There are lovely illustrations to assist the story, giving life to Sebastian's face. If you're looking for a short yet charming read, this one's for you. I will surely be on the lookout for more such treats by the author :)

Refreshing read!!

It's cute and short story which can be completed within 20 - 25 mins. It revolves around the main character Sebastian. The concept of this story is based on lost love. It shows how love slowly gets diluted in course of time , duties etc. It was a refreshing read. Narration is good and writing is lucid. Overall liked it. Recommend to others!!

You might have heard people reflecting on their life in old age. They revisit their memory lanes, smile at the happy moments, and ponder on things that went wrong. Not everyone gets a chance, but sometimes, there’s still time to turn things the right way. Here’s a little story I read recently on similar thoughts.

“Mr. and Mrs. Pinto” by Aqil N is a short story with adorable illustrations by Ashik N. As the name and the cover suggest, it’s about an old couple Mr. and Mrs. Pinto. The 73-year-old retired Sebastian Pinto is married to Jaya Pinto. Theirs is an inter-faith fairy tale love marriage with 3 well-settled kids. The old couple celebrates their 50th wedding anniversary in grand style with family, relatives, and friends. The venue, decoration, Sebastian’s speech – everything is perfect. Just like the perfect marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Pinto. There’s just a slight issue – this perfect marriage is successful but not happy. Sebastian can’t get rid of this thought long after the party and goes to the church near his home in search of some calm. What follows is a surprising and funny turn of events leading towards a heart-warming ending.

I enjoyed this beautiful story of barely 25 pages for various reasons. For starters, the story pictures a typical couple caught in the web of responsibilities and social image, thus love taking the backseat. A fizzled connection and routine life - you know this couple, don’t you? They’re such relatable characters! Sebastian’s character, in particular, is oh so cute.

The engaging writing and light-hearted narration are a major plus. I had a big warm smile on my face almost throughout the story. Last but not least - there’s a happy ending.

Read this one for that heart-warming feeling with a few laughs along the way.

Mr. & Mrs. Pinto are in what many would define a successful marriage, their life blessed with well established & settled children with families of their own.

Now standing in the autumn of their life, Mr. Pinto cannot help but wonder about his marriage over the years, the type of relationship they once had, the happiness that they both have stopped caring about, and the non-existent love between them. But suddenly he rediscovers love again.

At only 25 pages, I never expected to read something so real & beautiful. This is not just the story of Mr. & Mrs. Pinto, but also of thousands of couples stuck in a relationship, married or not, trying to understand where did things go wrong. This is a story of falling out of love & rediscovering it again, but not in the way we may all expect.

The author takes the story forward in a graceful pace, not wasting time in unnecessary details or lengthening the story out of relevant frame. The writing does justice to the story and delivers a crisp narrative, complete in itself, that will surely touch the reader’s heart.

I sat down with the story one fine morning, with my morning tea for company, and I found myself in the midst of a story that perfectly reflected the morning mood ─ fresh and promising ─ just like a warm embrace of a new beginning.

Wow! What a heartwarming read. Just finished this cute little story now and I feel so happy. It's the story of two elderly couples Sebastian and Jaya who have been successfully married but not happily married. How they find each other again and stayed together as one makes it so beautiful. The narration is really beautiful, even I loved the beautiful choice of the adjectives! This little story will make you laugh, warm up your heart all in just less than 25 minutes. Trust me, you can't miss out this cute story.

As a kid who thrived on utopian Bollywood movies, I always thought that perhaps the marriage of the hero and heroine is the end goal. A wedding happens or their families accept their relationship or they both accept their relationship and you have to assume that it's going to be a happily ever after later.

For the past two years, I am always click-clocking between two sides: side A is that happily ever afters is a myth. Happily ever after is not some magic cotton candy that you "just happen to get". Side B is the one that believes happily ever afters "can happen".

Mr and Mrs Pinto by Aqil.

Mr and Mrs Pinto are celebrating 50 years of marriage. A successful marriage. Is it a happy one? Sebastian (Mr Pinto) is doubtful about that. On their 50th wedding anniversary. While celebrating and cutting the cake with his wife and children.

Scary? Yes. Do you have to continue reading? Absolutely yes.

Sebastian feels that Jaya's (Mrs Pinto) love for him has "fizzled out". "She became distant, and the laughter dried up, replaced by a permanent frown." He wants to talk to her about it, but can't seem to summon the strength and courage to do so.

Now, after the anniversary celebrations, the same night, he takes a journey on his overthinking thought train. That journey hits a very hilarious and unique station on the way. Now, to know what happens there, you have to read the book.

When the story ends, you'll realise that happily ever afters definitely doesn't "just happen". However, they very well "can be manifested" if you put in the efforts to smoothen out the creases, remember the time when you realised you have fallen in love with this person and have open communication, you surely can make a "happily ever after" for the two of you.

This short story of 25 pages is a warm hug on a winter morning. Or a vanilla ice cream scoop drizzled with chocolate syrup that you enjoy on a summer night.

You'll feel hopeful about love after reading this not-exactly-the-typical-fairy-tale, if like me you seem to have taken an extremely pessimistic take on it.

Do give it a read. Please!

💒
“ It was a simpler time; no one dated back then. Sebastian told her, “I love you”. A week later, she said, “I love you too”.

“ Some family drama, a court date, two witnesses and three signatures later” Sebastian and Jaya became Mr and Mrs Pinto. Young, very much in love.

“ But that was the easy part”, writes the author. “Because then came marriage. “

💒
This sweet novella, 25 pages long, makes you smile as it takes you through how most marriages end up ‘successful’ rather than remaining ‘happy’.

A very deep message told in a very soft way, as we enjoy the golden jubilee celebrations of Sebastian and Jaya, get a good glimpse of how their relationship changes and then, how a 70 year old Sebastian feels he is living with an ‘imposter’, gatecrashes someone else’s wedding only to rediscover his own.

All of us ‘long and happily married’ will definitely look back at our own journey as we read this novella. With a (wry) smile perhaps but a straightening of our weary bent backs 😊

The tone is tender, the illustrations endearing and the message very succinctly put: nothing is lost permanently if we make the effort of cherishing and nurturing it.

❤️📕

It's a short read on Kindle Unlimited I picked up between books. It's about a couple who have been together for 50 years but their love has lost its sheen. Sounded interesting enough but turned out to be a damp squib. The illustrations are cute though. But overall, avoidable.

"He sat by the window, staring, but not really looking, at the open skies. And he spent the rest of the night counting the seconds, minutes, and hours away."

Confound love makes one do things one can never imagine, like Mr, Pinto from the story who madly loves Jaya. After quite a long time I got a chance to read a tiny-mini love story which rekindled my sprits, both for reading and loving Love. With the story moving forward, my expressions changed to merely a smile, all the time.

'Healthy marriage' is just a concept, with passing days life becomes monotonous and the spark is lost, whereas we humans need to keep the emotions of love awaken all the time. Aqil N, the author has really presented this book as a whole, with merely three chapters, all intertwined into a beautiful journey of love and emotion of Mr and Mrs Pinto, the cute characters, everyone can fall in love with.

I am at times amazed by the short stories because they speak a lot, leave soo many spaces in between to fill with personal experiences, which makes them worthy of all the attention. I highly recommend this book to all, read it without any guilt and celebrate the good vibe it contains.

The curtains had been drawn on the theatrical show of attachment that Mr and Mrs Pinto had put on for their audience.

This is a cute story of Sebastian Pinto who had fallen in love with a bubbly Jaya's guffaw, proposed to her, got married and like most couples in the world made everyone around believe that theirs was a fairy-tale marriage.

On the next day of his 50th anniversary, Sebastian looks at a girl who's a reincarnation of Jaya. Her hearty laugh makes him realize that he's living with an impostor and he needs to stop this girl from marrying another guy coz he's her forever love.
The end is cute and magical coz old Sebastian does get rid of the impostor 😆.

I would recommend this book to all those who believe that 'Humans act crazy in love'. A short read to enjoy over a cup of tea / coffee.
Thank you for this lovely book Aqil

If there was ever a checklist for married couples in India, Sebastian was sure that he and Jaya had ticked every box on it."

Just under 25 pages and I was craving a short, light read and this short story/ novella couldn't have come at a better time. Accompanied by the cutest illustrations, it's a heart-warming story of two people, 50 years into their marriage, and how they're still holding up, contrary to popular belief and what changes in their lives. Nothing dark, just a beautiful read about an old couple in love, uncomplicated yet not so.

I hope you read it and end up smiling the way I did.

Its a beautifully compiled short story manifesting an integral part of human relationships i.e. love, through Mr and Mrs Pinto.
Love is never completely lost it just keeps on sinking towards the bedrock of constantly changing human emotions, if no effort is made to save it from drowning.
How you get so busy putting on a facade of perfectionism to match societal standards that you end up losing your real self let alone your loved ones.
People lose track of time under burden of never ending responsibilities that they end up with nothing when they reach the finish line.
Don't focus on petty details, stand back look at the bigger picture, appreciate life, tell people that you love them and that's all it takes.

On the day of their 50th anniversary if Mr. Sebastian Pinto hadn't pulled on a wierd stunt of finding his 'reincarnated wife', his love for Mrs. Jaya Pinto would not have been rekindled.
But what made them drift apart ? Why did their love get snuffed on the first place ?
And that's what this 25 page, amazingly written, picturesquely decorated short story tells us - IT'S NOT ABOUT PROMISES, I'TS ABOUT EFFORTS. One should not stop trying. Because efforts are a proof that one didn't forget what one promised.
If you need to rekindle your emotions it simply alludes to the fact that you never made efforts to save them.
.
And you should.
.
After reading this I will.
.
.
Will you ?

What do you think are the requisites of a successful marriage? A stable partner, financial prosperity, good upbringing of the kids, yearly anniversary celebration with long speeches, making the perfect impression of a perfect couple.

These might make a marriage long and successful, but are these enough to make it happy?

After 50 years of marriage and ticking all the boxes mentioned above Mr. Pinto finds himself reflecting on his long and apparently successful marriage. He couldn't find answers when the love of his life became a life partner?
what prompted the shift from an affectionate companionship to a series of responsibilities, duties and habits?
At what point their marriage fell apart and they just carried on with a monotonous routine?

Following an absurd series of events, this beautiful story explores how Mr. Pinto rediscovers his long lost 'spark' in their relationship, the burned out love, the same old happiness he
gets from Mrs. Pinto's laughter.

In mere 25 pages it's successfully enlightens you on the world view of marriages. An extremely heart warming, and cute short story with a refreshing, engaging plot and adorable illustrations that will make you smile ear to ear, throughout.

A cute little story that would make you smile
Mr and Mrs Pinto is a short novel for anyone looking to read a refreshing story. It's a cute realistic story with the perfect touch of sweetness.

I don't usually read short stories( except a few novellas) since not much character development can be seen. Also, because they end too soon:(
But, this book is just BEAUTIFUL and AMAZING!
I loved all the sweet little moments the couple had. Quite Touching!

I had little mixed reviews when I had just completed it. But, now that I look back to it, it was quite rejuvenating. And above all, it helped me get off the huge reading slump I had.
Would recommend it to all looking for something short, cute, and refreshing.

p.s look out for the illustrations/ graphics, cause they are just ADORABLE. You wouldn't wanna miss on them.

You can read it on Kindle Unlimited for free. Thank you Aqil for sending me a copy in exchange of an honest review.
