Some pretty bland Superman stories with a couple emotional moments regarding Supergirl’s fate in the Crisis.

DC Comics Presents #78 - This one is pretty bad. Superman and a bunch of “forgotten” heroes set out to defeat a triad of evil sorcerers. Badly written and completely uninteresting other than trying to figure out how it relates to be included, in its entirety, as part of The Crisis.

DC Comics Presents #86 - Much better. Not only is it a better story, but the writing itself is better. A nice little adventure for Superman and Supergirl before the upcoming tragedy. It also brings back an opponent of Supergirl’s that might just be a plausible cause for The Crisis. She isn’t, but it was a nice try at attempting this kind of subterfuge.

Superman #413 - This is such a hopeless stereotypical Superman story. Dull, lifeless, and uninteresting. And there’s only a tiny tangential link to the Crisis on Infinite Earths.

DC Comics Presents #95 - An absolutely mediocre team-up between Superman and Hawkman that is so bland and uninteresting it is boring. And it has seemingly nothing to do with the Crisis, other than a mention or two of the red sky storms and such window dressing. This allegedly occurs immediately after Crisis on Infinite Earths #7 when Supergirl is killed, yet there’s not even a tear for her sacrifice from Superman. Clearly, that is the wrong placement.

DC Comics Presents #87 - Weird. I could have sworn I had read this issue when it had come out, but there was nothing in here that seemed even slightly familiar. As for the story itself? Meh.

Superman #414 - Picking up, more or less, where the previous story ended, we get the exciting conclusion … oh never mind, I just can’t, it’s merely more of the same DC drivel.

Justice League of America Annual #3 - The focus here is on Red Tornado, and the story features a diverse range of members of both old and new Justice League lineups. While it does tie-in events from the Crisis, the story itself is pretty uninteresting. A reoccurring problem with a lot of the stuff collected in the volumes of this box set.

Superman #415 - One of the worst things in these volumes. The misogyny is rampant here. Supergirl is dead. She died heroically trying to save her cousin and the universe. But the powers that be decided that she needed a kind of happy ending at least in some way. So they wanted her to have died happy and have if had a full life. And the only way they could conceive of the that was to have her married. So they use a cliched plot device of amnesia to retcon a marriage into her life and … people this is nearly as sick and traumatic as what Marvel did to Ms. Marvel (Carol Danvers) in Avengers #200. That was demeaning and so is this. Do better DC.

DC Comics Presents #88 - This one is just rather surreal. But that kind of makes sense with the Creeper involved. Interestingly developed and fast-paced. A good combination. Lots of fun here.

DC Comics Presents #94 - In the aftermath of the Crisis, not all titles, editors, and writers readily embraced the new reality for DC. Some titles took awhile to “catch up” you might say. This particular issue was one that I picked up and read when it came out. I was interested in seeing where the characters created in the pages of the Crisis, Harbinger, Lady Quark, and Pariah, would appear next or even if they would appear. Even though this is a post-crisis tie-in, I found it extremely disappointing then and I still do today.

There are a few good stories in this volume, but overall another disappointment.
