Gilded Gotham Mystery #3

Treachery on Tenth Street

Rate this book
Somebody’s killing the most glamorous models in Gilded-Age New York, but intrepid Genevieve Stewart is up to the task in Kate Belli’s third Gilded Gotham mystery, for fans of Victoria Thompson and Andrea Penrose.

As a heat wave engulfs New York in the summer of 1888, the city’s top models begin turning up dead, one by one, suggesting the work of a single killer. Society girl turned investigative journalist Genevieve Stewart is drawn into the case when Beatrice Holler, one of her friend Callie’s fellow models, is found with her throat cut.

Genevieve and her compatriot, wealthy Daniel McCaffrey, are joined by Callie to seek out the suspects, which leads them to search for answers from the members of the elite, notorious gangsters, and the city's most prominent painters.

In an era when London’s Jack the Ripper murders have everyone on edge, the police want to keep the killings quiet. But the bodies are piling up as fast as the suspects—and unless the killer is found, the simmering New York summer could boil over into madness.

The third book in this excellent series. Genevieve and Daniel are back and their relationship is developing nicely.

In Treachery on Tenth Street Genevieve's friend, Callie, asks her to investigate the death of a young artist's model. With Daniel helping they discover that several young women have been murdered, and there is a rumour that Jack the Ripper has relocated from London to New York. Our pair of sleuths follow the clues and finish up putting themselves in great danger.

I enjoyed the story although it did slow down a lot in parts. The investigation itself took a few too many pages. However the ending was very exciting indeed and the book finished on a high. I will certainly watch out for book four.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

As a heat wave kept residents away from New York in the summer of 1888, investigative journalist Genevieve Stewart was tasked with finding who had killed Beatrice Holler, fellow model of Genevieve's good friend Callie. Together with her friend Daniel McCaffrey, and much against the local police, Longstreet's, admonitions, they set to, searching among the local art scene, and speaking to the well-known artists. When another young woman was murdered, then a third, Genevieve's anger at the police and their lack of effort, sparked more from Genevieve and Daniel.

With first one suspect then another, the two sleuths had their work cut out. But they could feel they were getting close. Would they discover who was doing the heinous killings? And would they risk their own lives once again?

Treachery on Tenth Street is the 3rd in the Gilded Gotham Mystery series by Kate Belli and I enjoyed it very much. Although a bit slow in places, the camaraderie of the two main characters saw them working well together. I'm looking forward to the 4th in the series, and recommend Treachery on Tenth Street highly.

With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

This is the third book in the 'Gilded Gotham' mystery series. Set in the late 1880's, Genevieve is a woman before her time, almost thirty, unmarried and working as an investigative journalist. When two artists models are discovered murdered with their throats cut, Genevieve and her friend, wealthy bachelor, Daniel find themselves in the middle of the investigation. Is it true, that Jack the Ripper has relocated from London to New York, or is there someone copying his work?
A lovely period piece of writing with a gritty murder at the centre. Genevieve and her friends and family are all wonderful characters in this entertaining series.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. The third in the series that can be read as a standalone book as the first part of the book does recap the prior books. I enjoyed the first 2 books and found they did enrich this read for me. The mystery is interesting, and the descriptions of the conditions of the time paint a good picture of the period in which woman have few choices in careers. The romance is light but there is a bond between Genevieve and Daniel that you feel growing throughout the book. The secondary characters were not as involved as they were in previous books and had minor roles, and the connection did not seem as strong.

I really love this series and book three was not a disappointment. I would not recommend reading this one with out reading the first two. I would however recommend that you read all three of them. Genevieve and Daniel are such engaging characters once I start reading I cannot stop.

In this book Genevieve and Daniel are once again investigating a murder. There are some really great twists and turning in this novel and Belli does such a great job of describing New York in the middle of summer.

I could go on and gush all day long about this book, there is no downside to reading this wonderful series.

Many thanks to Negalley, the author and the publisher for the chance to read this amazing nove.

This series continues to entertain.

It's August 1889, barely two months since the events in Betrayal on the Bowery.
Rumors are sweeping NYC that Jack the Ripper is now in town. No wonder the police are deliberately downplaying the death of an artist's model who was found with her throat slashed. However, the dead model was a dear friend of Genevieve's friend Callie. And Callie, now also a model, has asked Genevieve and Daniel to find out who killed her friend.
Thus starts a very interesting (and dangerous) investigation that leads our intrepid duo into the heart of New York's art colony. Lots of twists in this one, complicated by the reluctant cooperation of the police and the unexpected interest of a local crime boss. More deaths occur along the way to a terrifying final confrontation with the killer.
it was so nice to see Rupert and Esmie again and to finally meet Genevieve's brother Gavin, who has just returned after several years in Egypt. It was also fun to take a day trip to Coney Island. There was also a very vivid reminder of why those who could flee the heat of the city did so!

Now, I've caught up and join the other fans of this series in waiting for the release of Opulence and Ashes.

This remains my favorite ongoing historical mystery series. I just really love the characters and the world, and the way it explores elements of old NYC history works so well for me. I thought a lot about the Audrey Munson episode of the Bowery Boys while I was reading this (she didn't quite align with that era, but there was such an obvious connection with her being a prominent artists' model). And I love exploring the Coney Island of the past. Throwback to my review for the first book in this series, but here's a great cover that's an image of something that actually features in the book! A novel concept. (I do still love the first book cover as an independent thing, but I don't know that they've been to Central Park in the entirety of the series so far lol.)

I received a signed copy of this book from the author as part of a newsletter giveaway.

This fantastic addition to one of my favorite series starts with an absolutely beautiful first chapter from the point of view of Daniel. I loved it so much I flipped back to read it again before moving forward. Wow.

The return of Genevieve’s friend Callie at the end of the last book was a bit of a cliff hanger and we learn that she has survived as a model and mistress, but other women in her circle are being killed. Of course, Genevieve and Daniel will look into it.

It was really interesting to see Genevieve realize that she’s inexperienced and somewhat sheltered compared to her friends (and brothers). So on top of the trauma from the last book, she’s feeling ignorant. (If I could magically give this book 20 more pages, it would be to explore her mental state more.)

The adventure scenes at the end are expected in this series and the extended one (three different locations) doesn’t disappoint.

Also wonderful: almost every secondary and even some tertiary characters make appearances in this book.

Book four is coming in 2023. Can’t wait!

Treachery on Tenth Street is the third book in the A Gilded Gotham Mystery series by Kate Belli.

It’s July 1898, and New York is experiencing a streak of sweltering weather. Genevieve Stewart has headed for Newport for the summer, where she will be covering the season’s social events. Genevieve is looking forward to spending the summer visiting with her friend Esme, her husband Rupert, and her friend Daniel. Her close friend, Callie, has come out of hiding and has asked Genevieve to investigate the murder of a fellow model, Bea. Bea had been modeling for an artist in the Tenth Street Building, where several artists have studios. Callie relates that the police called Bea’s death suicide, even though Bea’s throat had been cut. Genevieve and Daniel return to New York City, where they will encounter their nemesis Detective Longstreet, who warns them away from any investigation on their own. A second model suffers a similar fate, and even though the police don’t let the deaths be known, a reporter learns of the deaths and writes an article wondering if Jack The Ripper has come to the United States. Much to their dislike, Genevieve and Daniel realize that they need to get Longstreet to agree not to let any more information get to the press while they continue their investigation. Their investigation will lead them from members of society to some prominent artists and to the seedy Five Point area to seek help from some mobsters. Every lead they follow seems to end up turning into a dead end. When Genevieve reviews pictures taken at the crime scenes, she knows who the killer is, But will they get to the killer before any other models are killed?

I always look forward to reading the latest book in this exciting series. The books are well-written, plotted, and historically accurate. Ms. Belli also provides readers with engaging, believable, and well-developed characters.

I’m looking forward to the next book to see what adventures Genevieve and Daniel will have and if there will be a romantic interest for this duo.

The wealthiest models are being brutally killed off but the Police seem to want to keep it under wraps.
Rumours that Jack the Ripper has crossed the Atlantic and continuing in New York is enough to send its
citizens into a frenzy and for them to hound the Police and the politicians.

The models are also mistresses of various very highly placed people and silence on their deaths seems to
be paramount. Not to Genevieve Stewart and her able partner Daniel McCaffrey who have worked in partnership
before to solve crimes. Genevieve is a journalist by profession and is keen that investigative journalism
should be her forte. 1888 was not a time when this was acceptable by society and she has fought enormous odds
to reach this position. Her own parents are supportive, but her brothers are protective and abhor the danger
she puts herself in.

Daniel and Genevieve make a formidable team. They have access to the upper class which the Police cannot get
to and so they make bigger strides in the investigation much to the chagrin of the Police force. Danger, class
divides, upper class society of New York as stringent as it was in England if not more are all brought together
in this very entertaining read.

A fun and fast-paced mystery set in 19th century New York, centering around some familiar characters and a handful of new ones. This is the third book in a series, and I'll admit to not having read the first two, though now I think I'd like to go back and pick them up!

In this story, Genevieve and Daniel are asked to investigate the suspicious death of a friend of a friend — Bea, a popular artist model. Her throat has been cut, yet the police have ruled her death as accidental. Considering this more than fishy, Genevieve and Daniel dig in, only to find that similar murders keep occurring, and all to female art models within the same circle. In the sweltering New York summer, they must race against time to figure out who is behind these gruesome killings before more of their friends end up as victims.

The imagery in this book is unexpectedly vivid. I especially loved the cats' prints in the art studio and the various Coney Island descriptions. All a bit gothic! I found the pace pretty fast and the story easy to follow, with Genevieve and Daniel both likable characters. Having not read the previous two novels, I was at first concerned that I might not understand what was going on, but I was never confused and I found the characters compelling even without having read about them before. I am interested to see where the next installment takes us!

Thank you to Kate Belli, Crooked Lane Books, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this ARC!

Someone is murdering the glamorous models in New York City. As the number of girls murdered ( two) begins to pile up, Genevieve Stewart is drawn into the case when her friend Callie’s friend, Beatrice Holler is found with her throat cut.

Despite the sweltering heat of summer, Genevieve and Daniel McCaffrey begin to ask questions about why these beautiful women are being found dead.

I read the first book in this series, but not the second one, and I have to admit that this third one was better than the first. It was a lot faster in pace and it definitely kept my attention. It appeared to me that attention to detail really helped to keep this story very much alive in this reader's mind. I felt the sweltering heat and as they raced to find who was the culprit, I felt the characters were very well reflected in this era of time. I like the pace that was kept with the relationship between Genevieve and Daniel, and how they were in sync with each other’s motivations as they solved this case together. I enjoyed this!

My gratitude to Netgalley and Crooked Lane Books. All opinions expressed are mine.

“Sex work is work.” Seems to be the theme of this which yes, seems out of place for 1888. The author has decided to place 2024 liberal values into this work and give them to all the main characters. It’s distracting. I don’t read a book taking place in the 19th century bc I want to hear the same stuff I hear on social media. Also all the preaching took away from the actual crimes which by the time they found out who the killer was, they barely had time to explain why he even did it. Too much focus on the end chase and dire peril that the characters fall into at the end and not enough logic as to why any of this actually happened?

Also at the end, the proud “sex work is work” advocates gives up her life, gives up her “work” and gets married. Why? Why not continue to just live with him in love and do what she wants to do? Because the logic is missing here. If you’re going to have a political statement in a book, don’t contradict yourself by giving the character who represents that have a traditional conservative ending. What was the point of all I read then?

*Another fast-past installment in this whodunit mystery series full of historical details*

Note: Although each book has a self-contained mystery, I would recommend reading the series in order so that the character interactions make sense. Treachery on Tenth Street is the third book in the Gilded Gotham series.

New York City 1888, society girl turned reporter Genevieve Stewart investigates a series of murders of artist’s models being killed and posed to imitate famous artworks. The story is a combination of whodunit mystery and social commentary about gilded age New York society including classism and misogyny.

“The general consensus seemed to be that the deaths were tragic, but in some way inevitable, and that the women’s roles in important mens’ lives could easily be replaced.”

Like its predecessors, Treachery on Tenth Street was fast-paced and bingeable. The plot kept me guessing. And since this is the third installment, I am very invested in the characters by this point. Although it was surprising how naïve and priggish Genevieve was on certain subjects especially given how progressive her parents were. It didn’t quite feel in line with some of her previous actions. But I still enjoy this series.

One thing I really love about this series is that it is anchored in history and full of little historical details. Although the case itself is fictional, it does tie into real events. And the setting of a sweltering hot New York summer filled with societal tensions was so vivid. I love historical fiction that dovetails with real history without massively rewriting it or adulterating the lives of real people.

But I am ticked off that an important emotional scene happened completely off page. I won’t spoil specifics, but after building up to it for three books, it was frustrating to be denied direct knowledge of that scene. Not cool, Belli. Not cool. Having a character offhandedly mention something rather than directly showing it was anticlimactic.

I am still eagerly awaiting the next book in the series though!

Thought-provoking and terrifying are the two terms that come to mind with Treachery on Tenth Street.

I will fully admit I was drawn into this glittering world of New York in the late 1880s. The clothes, the locations, what was considered scandalous, the propriety of it all I loved everything about it.

Kate Belli has a gift with storytelling, I was truly immersed in this world that has everything I could ask for in a murder mystery including a possible connection to Jack the Ripper.

While I haven't read the first two books in this series I feel like this one can be read as a stand-alone, there's enough backstory in the first few chapters that you really can just pick it up and go.

I will be reading the others in this series, Genevieve is my favorite type of character and I need more of her story in my life.

I was fascinated with the detective work that Genevieve and Daniel completed, the strength it must have taken for Callie to make the decisions she did, finding out who they could count on and who was evil in not so much of a disguise it's all just fantastic.

I loved this book and can't wait to go back and start the first one. I hope to read many more books in this series.

Thank you to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for providing an advance copy of this book, I have voluntarily read and reviewed it, and all thoughts and opinions are my own.

The heroine's friend Callie resurfaces having solved her money problems by working as an artist's model (and becoming a man's mistress - but minor detail that) and comes to Genevieve and Daniel to find out who murdered one of her friends, another artist's model - a death the police have inexplicably ruled as accidental even though she was found with throat cut. Could the rumors be true? Has Jack the Ripper resurfaced in New York City?

An interesting back-drop (the Gilded Age art scene) and a serial killer plot don't save a saggy middle and unfortunately this one falls into the trap that a lot of serial killer plots do - our villain is unhinged and "crazy." It's just not nearly as compelling as the denouements in the first two books. I still liked it because I'm invested in the world. but more like a B- on my rating scale.

A Jack the Ripper copycat picking out single women in NYC in the hottest days of summer and they have tenuous connections to our main protagonists!
I had read book two, but this one would have had me doing my binge-read if I hadn't, and not because I would have felt lost but would have been so intrigued!
The publisher's blurb is a good hook so there is no need for recap and spoilers are just wrong. Fascinating characters, twisty plot, more red herrings than a fish monger, and a truly riveting story. Loved it!

Journalist Genevieve Stewart and her friend Daniel McCaffrey are back together, investigating a case of dead artist model(s). Their digging takes them into the lives of Genevieve's impoverished friend (and model) Callie, and other models and wealthy artists who use them, as well as how they all intersect with local gangsters.

No one is particularly likeable in this story, and though I know I was supposed to empathize with Genevieve and Daniel as they cope with danger and a brutal heat wave in New York City, I was more interested in all the fascinating historical details Kate Belli seeded throughout this mystery.

The murderer wasn't hard to figure out, but I got most of my enjoyment from learning more about New York City during this period.

Another wonderful book in this delightful series!

Ok- book 3 and I only have one teensy problem. I’m listening to the audiobook and every so often the narrator mispronounces Daniel’s name and puts the accent on the end so it sounds like she’s saying Danielle- (Dan Yell) which is a girls name. (At least I’ve never heard of a male named Danielle. 🤷🏻‍♀️)

Now that I’ve gotten that off my chest- no more complaints. Lol. Love the book!

Treachery on Tenth Street ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“Another surge, this one of warmth, ballooned in his chest. He loved these intimate, unspoken exchanges with her. There had been too few in recent weeks.”

Book three of the Gilded Gotham Mysteries was just released this last November and didn’t disappoint. Book three picks up not long after book twos ending and we get to follow the main duo of Genevieve and Daniel. This time they are on the case of a dead model as a favor for Genevieve’s old friend Callie. Callie has reappeared in Genevieve’s life because the police don’t appear to be investigating the death and have instead closed the case. Meanwhile Genevieve’s brother has finally come home from Egypt and we get to find out how he feels about Daniel and Genevieve’s escapades.

“There across the wide lawn and milling easily among the guests as if he didn’t have a care in the world, was the man they most suspected of murder.”

This book, as the others in the series did, had me hanging on every word. I love the crazy situations Daniel and Genevieve get into as they try to solve cases and get closer to each other. I liked that this brought characters together from the different books and we finally meet the brother Genevieve refers to from time to time. I felt like this book tied up a lot of plot threads from the earlier books. I also really appreciated the focus on the artist models. The models behind the artists, inspiration for some incredible works of art, are truly fascinating and amazing. I’m so glad this book touched on them and celebrated their contribution to art. I definitely recommend this book but would recommend reading the other books in the series first.

“The general consensus seemed to be that the deaths were tragic, but in some way inevitable, and that the women’s roles in important mens lives could easily be replaced.”

Genevieve and Daniel are back for the third book in this Gilded Age historical mystery series.

This picks up several weeks after the second book. Genevieve’s friend Callie enlists her help finding out who murdered Callie’s fiend, also a fellow model. Genevieve is supposed to be in Newport reporting on all the society happenings there for the newspaper that she works at, but she feels compelled to help Callie. Of course, Daniel isn’t going to let her investigate by herself. When more models end up dead and there appears to be a connection to Jack the Ripper, who rumors have suggested is now in New York.

I really enjoyed reading this book and I think it’s an excellent entry in what’s been a great series. Genevieve and Daniel are both well developed likable characters individually. Even after they continue to grow closer, after three books it might be time to move that relationship forward a bit more, even though there are understandable reasons why it’s hasn’t, The secondary characters are wonderful, I like that we’ve had Rupert and Esmie and they’re continuing story throughout the series and I like Callie’s character and hope we get so read more about her. The mystery was intriguing, even if the reveal seemed a bit rushed. I hope we get more books in this series!

It's the summer of 1888, and most members of New York City's elite society have fled the sweltering city for the cooler climes of Newport. To fulfill her role as society columnist for the newspaper, Genevieve Stewart is supposed to be in Newport reporting on balls, tea parties, and other outings. Instead, Genevieve and her investigative partner, Daniel McCaffrey, are compelled to stay in the city. When the Maple family's fortune dried up, Genevieve's friend, Callie, was reduced to working as a model for the many artists who work in New York. When a fellow model is found murdered in her apartment, Callie enlists Genevieve and Daniel to help find the killer. As more models wind up dead with their nude bodies posed to mimic famous paintings, there is fear that Jack the Ripper has made his way to New York and is continuing his murder spree among the art world.

I'm a big fan of the Gilded Gotham series, and I'm pleased to see Genevieve and Daniel working together (along with some reoccurring friends and family members) to solve another mystery that takes them from the mansions of the elite all the way to the slums of the city. Belli brings New York City to life by including a lot of information about the city and the art world of the late 1880s. Like a real investigation, there are times when Genevieve's and Daniel's case moves slowly at times and at a breakneck speed at others. The main plotline of the investigation flows well with the secondary storylines involving Genevieve's personal relationship with Daniel as well as Callie's budding romance with Genevieve's brother. The final confrontation with the guilty party is a little over the top, but TREACHERY ON TENTH STREET is an overall enjoyable, thrilling reading that kept me guessing until the end. I can't wait to see what Genevieve, Daniel, and the rest of the main characters get up to next.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

I enjoy this series and there are several things it has I especially like. There are a couple of things I'm not so in love with, but overall these are a good read.

I love the setting of Gilded Age New York. There was so much happening, changing and growing at that time and it offers plenty of fodder to tell a good story. The author takes full advantage of that and getting a peek at what it was like to live in NYC at this time - for people of all socio-economic classes - is very interesting.

I am kind of of two minds about Genevieve. I like her, and I applaud her determination to have her journalism career in spite of all the obstacles people (mostly men) put in her way and she's fairly determined and spunky when it comes to her work. I love that.

What I don't love so much is that she seems to not be able to get over or past her upbringing and the prissy, uptight mindset that - to be fair - her class of people would have done their best to instill in Genevieve. I wish she could just stop being fussed about and judgey about the choices other women are making in this story, some of them her own friends. As a character who thinks of herself as modern, she comes across as very prudish and judgmental on this topic and it annoyed me a bit.

She also seems to be very conflicted about her feelings for Daniel, even though in her own head she admits she cares very much for him so I want the two of them to stop it with the "will they / won't they" nonsense and just get on with it. I'm sure that will come in future books, at least I'm hoping it will.

Overall, as I said this is a good series with well-constructed murder mysteries to solve, interesting, likable characters and a very enjoyable setting. I will continue reading this series.

Format note: I get these books in audio format from my local library and the narrator is excellent. If you enjoy audio books this is a good series to listen to.

This is a murder mystery. Genevieve is hot on the trail.
Somebody’s killing the most glamorous models in Gilded-Age New York, but intrepid Genevieve Stewart is up to the task in Kate Belli’s third Gilded Gotham mystery, for fans of Victoria Thompson and Andrea Penrose.
As a heat wave engulfs New York in the summer of 1889, the city’s top models begin turning up dead, one by one, suggesting the work of a single killer.

I love Historical Mysteries, I find them an escape in our very modern world. However, when a Historical Mystery book brings the modern world, I must protest, I liked the premise, wealthy girl reporter, handsome hero, so what's the problem? The problem is the hero is totally second to the heroine, she is the dominant force, he is made to look like an open check book, with the wrong kind of friends who always saves them? How bad can these loyal friends be? My dream is to read stories that show the truth of the age that is being written about. Ladies were ladies, men were men, and The poor will be with you always, that never changes, no matter how much money is thrown at it. I would love to have written about the story, but, if you weave politics into a story, I will call it as I see it.
