***** "A gripping story from Liza Miles. When my wife picked up this book before me, I thought I'd have to wait ages to read it. However, it was so captivating that she finished it in two nights. The story had me spellbound too. Neither of us correctly identified the murderer such were the twists and turns in a story packed with intriguing characters. A must read."
*****"I will definitely be reading the second book in the series as soon as it comes out!"
Murder on Morrison is the debut mystery novel by Liza Miles featuring the fascinating protagonist Rose McLaren. In her first puzzle, Rose is a few years into opening her muffin shop and getting her life in order after a few years serving a prison sentence for a crime she didn’t commit. When a dead body literally ends up at her doorstep, she starts to investigate with the help of some friends. Between getting mixed up with the police and some criminals from her former life, she uses her wits from both worlds to try to solve the mystery and some demons from her past. This novel is a wild ride with twists and turns. What I liked best were the very well developed characters that were flawed, but likable. Their relationships were wholly believable and not forced. It’s a diverse group that are using their wits to help each other and solve the crime. Rose McLaren is probably one of the most well rounded and fleshed out characters I’ve seen written in a while. And while she bakes and sells muffins in her shop, this isn’t a cozy, comedic light hearted romp. It has realistic and darker themes from these complex characters. You’ll be drawn into the story. There were moments in the final third of the book that I let out an audible gasp at some of the action and twists that were taking place. I definitely am looking forward to reading what lies ahead for these characters in future books. Highly recommended
This is a murder mystery that takes place in Edinburgh where I live so there are so many familiar places that get described. Our main character Rose who has had a very hard time with her losing vison in one of her eyes, having got out of a toxic relationship with her on/off boyfriend and having issues with drugs and alcohol. After serving her prison sentence for a crime she didn’t commit and opening her muffin and biscuit shop she is set to turn around her life for good until one day the body of a friend turned up dead at the front door of her shop and from there everything gets complicated.
The story involves strong topics like drugs, alcohol and murder so it can be a bit mature and gritty. There are quite a lot of different characters mentioned in the story but they are all well written, distinctive and played an important part in the plot. I liked how well the places and situations where described and also how the characters were linked to each other and their relationships portrayed. The plot is well structured and the scenes and locations fit perfectly with the story.
Overall a good, short and entertaining mystery novel that kept me engaged and interested to find out about the story. I read Liza’s first book of short stories and I can see a huge progression and development in her writing and it is so nice to see the progress that writers make.
The simplicity of delicious, freshly baked goods in a bakery in Edinburgh meets murder and complex people in Murder on Morrison.
Set on a colder and more driech day than normal in October in Edinburgh, Rose and Trixie are at work in the bakery (owned by Rose), that is full of delicious cakes and muffins. It is far from any ordinary day as the lightness of the aromas of baked goods float around, they're pinched by an undercurrent of darkness as a murder occurs. It's almost cosy murder with a sprinkling of personality and life experience complexities and a good dollop of intrigue.
Rose, former RAF has a fierceness and perfectionist attitude about her that isn't as sweet as the cakes that are baked and sold, but in a sense, wants her apprentice, Trixie, to do well so she can give her a glowing reference. Amongst some of her more abrasive nature, there is heart as she gives Rob some time to talk to her about the deceased, but then it gets intriguing as he could be a suspect. There is also intrigue in the deeper mystery as to why the Detective Inspector Chatterton has seen Muffins on Morrison be flagged up on investigations in almost quick succession, it triggers the curiosity.
The book leads readers to real locations, such as Morrison Street and Princes Street, including the M&S that is on Princes Street, where there are some truthful anecdotes that most women will be able to relate to. The case then resumes as to how people are perhaps being murdered and the suspects and trying to piece together motive as cakes and mystery mingle together in its mostly chilled out vibe, until almost half-way through it changes course into a twist and all seems not just more mysterious, but a bit more intense before reaching a satisfying conclusion.
One of those 'can't put it down till I find out what happens next' kind of books! Thoroughly enjoyable read. So well structured and beautifully written.
This is a compelling read and once you start its impossible to put down . The character of Rose is remarkable and you just keep rooting for her. The way the author describes the sights and atmosphere of Edinburgh you can totally visualise as if you were there. Just wish you could actually smell the cupcakes or better still taste them! Brilliant read .
