A Storm of Light and Darkness

Rate this book
What would you do to protect everyone you love?
Anything. Everything. Whatever it takes.

The final battle is here. With the star elves marching on Pernula, the Oncoming Storm and her friends must gather their allies and make one last stand. But it won't be easy. Their enemies have legions of soldiers, chemical weapons, and a powerful magic spell on their side. Not to mention a dragon. Snatching victory from the jaws of defeat will be costly, and should they fail, everyone they love will suffer.

For most of her life, the Oncoming Storm has only opened her cold black heart to very few people. But now, after all her adventures and everything she has been through, she has found friends and family all across the world whom she would do anything to protect. The only problem is that in war, people are bound to die and get hurt. Fear gnaws at her soul, because even with her considerable powers, the Oncoming Storm knows that she might not be enough to protect everyone she loves.

Every weapon will count, every ally will be vital, every skill will be used, and every single card will be played before the end. But will it be enough? And who will be left standing when the streets are running red with blood? Because the war will end. One way or another. But not everyone will be there to see a new world born...

Do I like this author? I want to say yes.

3 stars for the entire series

Her books her terrific, at least this series and the Court of Elves series but I have to say they make for a mostly boring read.

The heroines like to make plan ahead and they ALWAYS work. I love books where I'm surprised at the reveal but after reading 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 book with the same exact style, not to add the other series, I just got bored.

The heroine might be in a tavern drinking at the beginning and then towards the end of the book when something is about to go awry, somehow someone comes in just in time. Then the heroine reveals that when she was in that tavern she told one of the patrons to come to so so and so place and the person of course always comes through.

It was easy and was a huge cop out numerous times. I read the entire series only because I wanted to see what happened between The Oncoming Storm and Shade and imo it was anticlimactic.

TITLE: A Storm of Light and Darkness
AUTHOR: Marion Blackwood
RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
GENRE: Fantasy
SERIES: The Oncoming Storm - 7/7
CAWPILE: 9.11

Firstly, I would like to say a massive thank you to Marion Blackwood (the author) for sending me a copy of this book. It's been amazing being part of your ARC team and can’t wait for more!

An exceptional finale to now one of my favourite series of all time. Blackwood did not disappoint with this flawless and one of the best installments in the series. From the get go, this book is pure action, suspense and battles and i loved every single page. This is everything I want from a final book. I am extremely satisfied and every character had a worthy send of. Talking of the characters, I will miss them all so much. Storm is one of my fave heroines and her and Shade are my otp literally. Enemies to lovers done perfectly, with the right amount of tension and build up. The supporting characters were also very strong, and I will miss them too.

Overall, you need to pick up this series. I can finally recommend the whole series and say with absolute confidence: IT IS WORTH IT!!!!

This was the last and final book in the Oncoming Storm series and this journey couldn’t have had a better conclusion. Once again, I am absolutely stunned by how Marion managed to create such a neat but also colorful world with so many amazing characters and with such an intriguing storyline. Not even one of her books has been ever been disappointing or boring, they just kept getting better and better and more intense each time.

Everyone already knows how in love I am with Storm and Shade, they’re this perfect powerful duo that everyone would envy. They once again proved what their power can do and I absolutely loved seeing them in action. I still remember reading the first book and loving it and being happy that I still have six more books to go and that feels like yesterday. And now, I just finished the last book. WOW! I am so deeply attached to all the characters in general and it makes me kinda sad knowing their story is over. Even though we got a happy ending, it felt bittersweet to me since I wasn’t ready for it to end. But we got the best conclusion and that is what matters the most.

And now, onto the author’s absolutely magical writing. I am still very surprised on how Marion managed to create such an adorable and powerful cast of characters and such a flawless world in such a short period of time. Her writing style is so beautiful and lyrical and easy to read, which made me so excited for the next book each time I got to finish a part of the story. I am deeply thankful that I got the chance to be an arc reader and I am even more grateful to have known such a kind and loving person as Marion. I am so honored to have been part of this journey and I am even more excited to see what the author will feed us with in her next series!

Note: Thank you to the author for having me on her arc team.

I can't believe that it's over. I've been putting off reading this last book in The Oncoming Storm for a month just because I wasn't ready to say goodbye to the character. I'm still not ready.

A Storm of Light and Darkness is perfect. The pieces of the puzzle fit togheter beautifully. The characters are fighting a war, scheming, failing and succeeding. Such a clever book where everything comes togheter, even things happening in the books prior to this one. The relationships being most important.

As always there are so many emotions and I felt everything. While reading I'm laughing out loud, smiling and crying.

This book is a masterpiece!

I've been reading this series since the beginning, so it's bittersweet to now review it's ending. The Oncoming Storm is a delightful, complex, morally gray character who will always keep you guessing--the consummate snarky thief with a questionable moral compass but a heart of gold. Her friends are just as vibrant--the enigmatic Master Assassin, Shade; the grumpy elf warrior, Elaran; the sweet innocent, Liam; and so many more. They must all rise up against the threat of the Star Elves, led by a Queen who's inspired by the best intentions but destroys anything in her path to attain her vision.

This book contains the final series of battles, packed with action and more surprising twists--some which I definitely did not see coming. I don't want to give spoilers, but it is a fitting end to this epic tale.

I cannot recommend this book series enough to lovers of dark fantasy, whether in books like Scott Lynch's The Gentlemen Bastard's series starring the infamous Locke Lamora or in video games like The Elder Scrolls (sneak thief for the win!). This story can get super dark in parts, whether from cold, brutal violence or heartbreaking losses, but there's always a light that draws Storm up and out, with us not far behind.

Thank you, Marion Blackwood, for creating this beautiful series. It's an instant classic, in my opinion, and I cannot wait to see what your next project will be.

Well, this is the last adventure for Storm and I am once again blessed to be giving an ARC review.

This is how you end a series. With the same passion, wonderful characters and excitement that you start with. Each book has built upon the previous books while never losing focus of the most vital part of story telling—the characters and our ability to care about them. That is amped up to 20 in this final adventure.

Marion continues to weave beautiful world building and twists that both surprise but make sense, a rare combination to have! I had my expectations but she masterfully created a story that leads you down an unexpected but glorious path.

Each book on this series has been a privilege to read and while I weep to leave this world behind, it’s been such a joyful ride. It’s been so long since I have fallen in love with a series as deeply as I did this one.

I look forward to see what other stories Marion has to offer in the future! Thank you so much for giving up the adventures of the Oncomimg Storm.

An action packed read that says goodbye to old friends.

When the first chapter ends with, "War had come," you know you're in for a heck of a ride. And Ms. Blackwood does not disappoint. The queen of the Star Elves is on a mission to increase her malleable subjects, and Pernula is next on her agenda. It's up to Storm and the Master Assassin to stop her. As Storm's troops gather, we get to revisit characters from the previous books and some of them come with surprises. For a fun read with a kick-butt, snarky heroine, I highly recommend this book (and the series).

Everything has culminated to this book. The war is here. Everyone is at risk of dying. My anxiety was at 100% the entire book.

I personally had no idea how they would survive and win the war. The star elves hold was absolute and I was praying my favourite characters would survive. Storm's ultimate goal is to win and save the people she loves but those two are not mutually exclusive.

Times I cried:
- Elaran yelling at Storm
- Elarans apology
- Storm at the end

☼ Beginning: 4 stars
Boy oh boy I was worried for everyone. Storm is really invaluable. Tensions within the Army arise and resources dwindle.

☼ Middle: 4.5 stars
Let me tell you I was shocked by the turn of events. I had full fate in Storm and how she gets out of situations.
I knew the different factions with the Army would resolve their issues so I wasn't worried. I could tell it wasn't real.
The retreat was surprising though.

☼ Ending 5 stars
Bringing the war to their home-ground and fighting offensively with their sneaky tactics was genius. I think previous books should when they were in the city, fighting dirty and with Underworld tactics, then they would succeed.
Also tears.
It got a little dicey there but I am so happy for everyone. Great ending.

☼ Characters: 5 stars
☼ Character relationships: 5 stars
☼ Pace: 4 stars
☼ Steam: 4 stars (recommend ages 16+)
☼ World-building: 5 stars

I will scream to everyone I know about this series. I cannot recommend it enough.
The morally grey characters. The character development. The slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romance. The world building. Woman with knives. Love interests who threaten people who hurt you. It was all amazing and I will re-read these books again and again.

This was such an epic, heart racing adventure to conclude this incredible fantasy series. Everything was simply amazing and one of the best instalments within the series. My emotions were a mess during the duration of reading this novel in one sitting because we couldn’t put it down.

The storyline was perfectly paced and filled with action as everything is focused on the war/battle. I loved how factors from the previous novels in the series connected and added into this one flawlessly. All the plot twists and constant high stakes kept me on the edge of my seat wirh anticipation of what would happen next.

The characters were so raw and real. Storm is one of my favourite heroines and all the supporting characters offered something whether it be a minor or significant role to play.

The slow burn romance was everything I wished for! Although there wasn’t as much as I would’ve liked in this final instalment, I still loved every moment between Storm and Shade. Their tension, banter and connection made me so happy.

I am so grateful to have been gifted advance copies of every book in this series so by the end...I honestly wasn’t ready to say goodbye to everything. This series has become one of my all time favourites but I’m content with the happy ending since I couldn’t have imagined it any other way. I’m so excited to read all the future books this author writes!

Overall, I adored this thrilling finale. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this series to fantasy lovers who enjoy morally grey characters, found family and enemies to lovers!

For the last time....... (Im not crying you are)

What can I say that haven't said already. I fell upon these books completely accidentally and I truly believe it was the world working in mysterious ways. When I started this book, part of me was heartbroken from the get go because i knew this was the last time I was going into this world, going on adventures with Storm and the gang. So even before i started reading i was crying.

The writing in this book, like the others, is second to none. There was everything we have come to love about this series and of course the twists and turns that Blackwood likes to take us on and give us all insomnia trying to find out what happens next.

I am keeping this review shorter than the others because it is the last book and I refuse to risk any spoilers whatsoever, all i will say is that this is the ending we've all been dreading but it is one that Storm and her Gang of misfits deserves. These characters will stay with me forever and I am so grateful for the chance to read their stories.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I would like to say it has been a pleasure being on the ARC team and I cannot wait for everyone else to experience the greatness of The Oncoming Storm, even if it is for the last time......

🌀🖤A Storm of Light and Darkness - Oncoming Storm book #7 - Review🖤🌀

Couple: Storm and Shade

Author: Marion Blackwood

Tropes: frenemy to lover, PNR, epic quests, fantasy romance, guild romance, spy-thieves-assassins

Review: We being with Storm essentially living in Shade's castle at Blackspire since he has claimed the title of 'High King'. This book kicks off with them preparing for the upcoming battles and calling in all their friends to arms. In the first part of the battle we see all parts of their army unite and attempt to win the war early to ultimately fail at first due to a spy in their camp.

This book kept me on edge because Shade and Storm attempt to give themselves up SOOO many times to prevent their friends from harms way. I hated every time they went alone into the enemy camp and barely came back until the end when Shade gave himself up for Storm. I don't know what I would of done without the comedic relief from Haela and her twin.

I won't lie...at first I thought that they really did lose all their allies but that was quickly remedied when we saw how they lured the Star elf forces into Pernula by uniting both Underworld's to save Pernula from the Star Elves. I was ecstatic to see Bones again and the old Thieves Guild masters for one last stand. I also found it hilarious that EVERYONE saw Shade and Storm coming from a mile away but them.

🖤🌀SPOILERS🌀🖤

The AWKWARD, HEARTBREAKING moment when Storm DIES on the battlefield saving someone we all hated reading about in book 4...just kidding but she does come close to dying in Shade's arms after being stabbed in the gut. This scene made near cry because I could just picture Shade's heartbreaking holding Storm in his arms and imaging how close he came to having her in his future to lose her at the end after EVERYTHING they went through.

Low-key though, Elaran's wedding was sweet to and made me happy for him after all his losses. It made me so happy that Princess Illeasia got her happy ending to especially since was forced to go through with the ritual.

Rating: 10/10; SHADE and STORM!!

Storm
Something that I love about this series is how consistent so many things are. I said a couple of books ago that he never has to intervene to save her, and now they talk about it and confirm it.

She commented a long time ago that Shade is one who gives orders and is used to people taking orders from him. He tries to give her orders, and she every time that she doesn't take orders, and he's commented a couple of times how people obey his orders.

Until now, but for a reason: 'He jerked his chin. “Let’s go.” Since he had technically saved my life a minute ago, I let his presumptuous command slide. Just this once. So instead, I just nodded and followed him higher up the hill.'

There's been no inconsistency from either of those themes. Both things have been true throughout.

Something that very much surprises me about this book is how war focused it is yet how very interesting it still is to me. I wonder if this will be the entire book or if it will end soon and then I'll get a lot of the what happens after. I'd like a lot of what happens after.

The fear over Shade not returning yet...

He ordered his assassins to stop her from going after him...

When she tells Eleran alone about Illeasia, ' it was much better if he gathered up all of his rage and pain and sorrow and heartbreak and took it out on me. He hardened heart carried so much already, so what was one more thing? ... Shade would help him through it so it was better if I alone was the villain in this story..."

Eleran to Storm, " You let me hurt you so that I wouldn't hurt so much." What.

I want to cry. It took so long to get here but the whole thing was amazing.

I loved seeing Shade and Storm captured together and finding their way out together.

For this whole book being in war, I didn't mind it. It was still very good.

My one critique about this book is that I wish I knew more about Shade. I don't know very much about him. His POV would have been awesome.

TLDR - perfect ending, great pacing, and of course Storm ❤️ -

This is the end. I was ready for an ending but now I’m sad I won’t get to see Storm again. I was kind of hoping for a cutesy bonus chapter epilogue like at the end of the last few books.

As always I fricken love Storm but also I finally trust Shade with my everything which makes loving him to smithereens that much better. They still have tensions and banter and it just never got old for me, especially as the cute stuff grew. Elaran and his friendship with Storm was A grade, no fault all amazingness. And honestly Elaran as a dude is just great.

I honestly loved the plot of this. Normally and ending this built up would kind of drag but it felt broken up onto bite sized chunks that made sure I was never bored

I loved this series and I will rec it to everyone. It was slow burn and fantasy with an amazing MC and plenty of side characters to pick as favourites whilst still showing clear focus on more important side characters. The romance was cute (sadly no smut really just brief makeouts) and felt so satisfying once we got there, but also side characters for romance which was adorable. All of that doesn’t matter though because Storm is my most favouritest everest and I will die on this hill in a blaze of glory (just like she would)

My god what a journey it was. When i first started this series i may not have liked it that much or found it ridiculous but even then the characters had promised potential. I'm so glad I didn't stop and continued reading the whole series. This might be one of my few favourite fantasy books. I loved how the plot wasn't romance centric. The romance part was so so slow burn that it actually burned me a bit but that's just how i liked it. I loved the whole world building, the plot, the characters, the banters, the writing - especially the fighting scenes. Those scenes were written so well in my opinion.

I loved the whole found family factor. Thats one thing that made me love all the characters. And the main characters. oml. the banter between them. the fights between them. the way they held blades to each other's throat every freaking time they met. the tension between. and when they finally got together, the love between them.

i loved how this book brought everything to a circle. every mystery in the previous books were finally explained even tho i forgot about most of them and would have been happy even if the author didn't mentioned them. IT EVEN MENTIONED MAN BUN'S NAME FINALLY (that would've haunted me if it wasn't revealed tbh)

I loved the way the whole series ended. in a happy way :)

overall i loved them all <3

Omg, I’m so sad that this series has ended. I love these characters with all my heart and I have never liked a female heroine as much as Storm. She never needs saving, she’s strong and fearless. She’s no damsel and I couldn’t have loved her more. She and Shade are forces of nature and absolutely perfect for each other. They are fiercely protective of their family and friends, especially of Elaran and Shades baby brother, King Edward. Shade and Edward have these incredible brotherly love moments that made my heart melt. With the ongoing battles throughout the entire book, they were a breath of fresh air. I mean, when a badass Master Assassin holds his little brother in front of everyone. 🥰

Fadraeth’s death devastated me. He was a good person, stuck trying to obey his Queen while also trying to do what was right. His love for his Princess was heartbreaking cause he knew she did not love him that way but he supported her no matter what. I was glad that she at least loved him enough to try to protect him.

Elaran got his happy ending and my heart was so full! He deserved all the happiness. He was one of my favorite characters from the start. A beautiful aubern haired grumpy elf? What’s not to love?

Why can't I give this more stars?!
This is a truely epic ending for an unbelievably fantastic series by the incredibly talented Marion Blackwood!

O.M.G the feels!! I went through a multitude of emotions reading this final book, from giggling like a little school girl to sobbing at the unfairness that is life sometimes! I was right there with our morally grey, black-hearted thief, feeling everything she was feeling as I tried not to rush through the book (the need to savour the last story is strong I can assure you!).
There is so much I want to say but find I can't articulate the words needed! Pfftt!

To say that I have loved reading this series would be a bit of an understatement. I've enjoyed following Storm (my hero!!) And Shade through their many misadventures throughout this series so much so that physical copies are being procured to take pride of place on my bookshelves!
I am thoroughly looking forward to reading whatever comes from that wonderful mind of Marion's next! (Though I'll always wish we could read a bit more of The Oncoming Storm 😍)

Wow, I’m at a loss for words. A Storm of Light and Darkness was simply amazing, I couldn’t have pictured a better way to end the series than with this book. Marion Blackwood did not disappoint, from the first page I was hooked, I couldn’t put it down and almost read through the night because of it. All the intricate fights/battles/brawls/schemes that we’ve seen in the previous books all combine into this book so flawlessly that I can’t comprehend how she did it. Once again the plot twists that she carefully placed were so good that I truly never saw it coming, multiple times lol I wish I could forget this series just so I could read it again and experience the thrill that Storms journey takes you on all over again. I can’t wait to re-read it and look forward to future work from Marion Blackwood.

What a ride!!! Congratulations to Marion Blackwood for created such a authentic underworld. Storm is a character full of live, and I love her all the way, with all her light and, most of it, with all her darkness. But, if a strong, clever and ‘mess up’ protagonist isn’t enough, Blackwood offers us a full of genuine characters that you only could love, all of them. Specially de elves. But, what can I say: Elaran and shade are my favorite. The bromance between them and the adventures the three of them live, are as much as dangerous than funny, but they always support and fight for each other.

I don’t want to finish my review without speak of the message that Blackwood is sending us. Life is beautiful for all the light in it, but for the light can stand as beautiful, we need to live some darkness too.

(Sorry for my english. I need to practice more my writing 🤪)

Storm, for the last time – here’s to you! You kept me entertained for many books, and I am sad to see you go, but at the same time: the story here ends on a satisfying note and the action before it reveals things all the way from the first book.

It is difficult to say much about this book without spoiling what happens in it. Of course, if you’re here, reading this review, you are certain to know the sort of battle that Storm and the gang are facing. And oh, the action- it is glorious! That’s always been something I loved about the Oncoming Storm books – she knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat.

During this series, I grew real attachments to many of these characters and it was so great – or sometimes equally heartbreaking – to observe them going through this journey.

All I can say is what I started with: Storm, for the last time – here’s to you. I loved your journey.

An epic conclusion to an epic serie!

Join Storm, Shade, Elaran and the rest of our scheming friends one last time for their biggest battle of all. They have to scheme, slash and lie to win this last fight against the Star Elves to keep themself and everything they love safe.

I was not ready for this series to be over, but boy, did Marion deliver! I was on the edge of my seat, laughed till I cried, actually cried and speechless all at once. I have found my spirit animal in Storm and I have loved every single adventure she took. If you love morally grey characters, fantasy and enemies-to-lovers (who am i kidding, everyone loves that), this series is the one for you!

On to the next adventure, my black-hearted thief

I have not put this book down!!
(Well I did because I was forced to - because adulting is compulsory during the day)
Marion Blackwood has delivered once more on non-stop action, and threats to our beloved characters lives!!!!
I needed to keep reading to find all the answers!
I was not ready to say goodbye to this series,
And certainly not to the adventures of Storm and Shade!
But Marion has made this series such an incredible adventure to undertake as a reader and I have enjoyed every minute of reading, every page turned, every syllable read!

I will never not recommend these books to anyone who loves a good fantasy read!!!

I can't believe it's done.
I plowed through this series in only a few days but since the series spans the course of years, I feel so much older now. I don't even know what to say, just that this was an awesome read. 10/10, would recommend. This whole series has made it to my "definite rereads" shelf, which says a lot since I'm pretty particular about what books get to live there. (Granted, there's like 40+ books on that shelf, but it's 40 books out of the like 200 something books I've marked as read on Goodreads.))

Why can't I give this more than 5 stars? This is not enough for me to express how I feel about this book.

This was one wild ride, the epic finale that ties together everything that happened in the past six books, which was a brilliant way to finish a series. The plot itself was spectacular as usual, full of surprises and twists which kept me at the edge of my seat. I just cannot put into words how good this book was. The only thing I am disappointed with is that the series is over 😭😭 now I need to find something to read to fill the gaping hole this has left in my cold black heart.

Amazing series of books

I loved this series. The characters were amazing and the authors ability to make every book unique but also continue the overall story was wonderful. Each character is important in the series. They may have a small part in one book but be essential in another. I read all seven books in less than a week. I highly recommend this book. For reference I am a 63 year old woman. A High school teacher of Civics. This was a great way to spend the first week of summer break.

This is one of the best book series I have ever read. I read every single book in less than two days. It has everything a person needs, from action, to friendship, to love, and everything in between. The author gives us characters that not only developed nicely throughout the series, but she actually gives us situation that have us trying to read faster to know what happens next. I enjoyed every page of this book, and I can’t wait for what comes next.

A storyline that never leaves your thoughts

Out of the hundreds of it thousands of books I’ve read, this series has kept me in suspense since the first book. I stayed up too late just trying to read “one more page” and sometime ended up falling asleep with the book in my hand. I don’t recommend many of my personal reads to others but this one I’ve been vocal about. Simply because I want other to experience the series as I did. It was an adventure. Thank you for this!

There were some things I liked about the ending and others I found frustrating. Overall I felt this book was longer than it needed to be and too battle-heavy. I also felt (as I had throughout the series) that it was awkward having twists that were just the narrator hiding information from the reader and for the most part, they fell a bit flat. I don't regret reading the series, but it's firmly in the meh category for me.

10 out of 10

Entire series was great. Easy to dive into and become addicted. Contained an array of characters that the author really put work into and made you love (or strategically hate) all of them. I really enjoyed the romantic arc between certain characters and appreciated the slow burn to get them where they ended up. Seems to many books with any romance involved jump right in with no pretext. Would definitely recommend.
