Venerit warriors fight for the honor of their master’s house, but will they fight to defend an innocent among them?
Kidnapped and offered up as a prize for the three Venerit champions of the kingdom, Theon is terrified and out of his depth. He’s only human and completely at the mercy of the towering Venerit warriors he’s now forced to share a cell with.
Mage lords rule the land, but will Theon allow fear to rule his heart?
Navigating the politics of House Natas and the budding relationship between himself and the champions, Theon discovers enemies lurking around every corner. He’s coming to realize that even though the Venerits hold prestige and honor, they’re just as much slaves to their master as he is. With all of them at the mercy of their Lord, he knows that his champions might not be able to protect him from every threat.
Will the secrets Theon’s kept tear apart everything he’s fought so hard to claim as his own?
Zyon is a Kingdoms of Pelas novel featuring a scrawny human, a towering half-orc, a beautiful tiger, and a fierce gargoyle. As well as plenty of surprises along the way. Equal parts unflinching brutality and robust love story, this book isn’t for the faint of heart. Our characters' journey will continue through the Kingdoms of Pelas series. Zyon features a harem/poly relationship and has a HFN ending.
Holy crap on a cracker! I devoured this book! I love fantasy; it's my favorite genre. Add in poly MM and it's nearly perfect.
Theon grew on me. I didn't know what to make of him at first. He came across a little snooty in the beginning, but it became more obvious he'd lived a sheltered life. Nica, the tiger shifter, was the glue that held everyone together. Wye, the gargoyle, was the protector, and Braz, the halfling orc, was the gentle soul who needed love. And then there was Florin. Oh man..I felt so bad for him.
Normally I don't like poly if everyone isn't on board, but this worked for me. They all struggle with coming to terms with the way things are and their relationship with each other. It takes time. There's jealousy and hurt feelings, but there's also love and tenderness.
Now, I will say, this is not for the faint of heart. I'm more of a sweet, low angst person. This book is...not. There's plenty of moments that are sweet and loving which I adored. But there is also plenty of brutality. The world is harsh and the people are treated as nothing more than disposable possessions. It's bloody and dark at times. I cried, cringed and almost retched a time or two, but I couldn't stop reading.
It's HFN, and I can't wait for book 2 to see where they all go from here. I hope it's not long....
2.5 stars. Rounding down for the amount of pages I had to skip.
- I almost DNFed in the early chapters due to the writing. It was convoluted; sentences were long and hard to follow. - Too many sex scenes with too many partners. Skipped all of them. - Didn’t care much for the battle scenes except for the first one. The outcome was predictable in every single on of them. - Nicknames “little bird” and especially “precious” the gladiators called their little human were honestly annoying, especially after the first twenty times. - Florin. There is only one chapter from his POV. Though it gives us a new angle on the story, it doesn’t actually fit in. Either give us more from him or find a way around it. - The way Florin gallivanted around, showing up at all the right places at the right time, fooling around with Theon & Co, you’d think he half owned the place. Not a single crumb of self preservation in that boy. - Some of the choices the characters made are downright dumb. I understand the story needed to move along, but not at the expense of consistently sacrificing the characters’ intelligence (master and slave alike). - Not once (scratch that, it was exactly once after the initial kidnapping) did Theon think back to his life before the slavery. No flashbacks, no missing anyone, no adjusting to the life of taking orders and servitude, no emotions but fear of rape. It was only in the very end did his story come out, but once again, it was only a story, without real emotional connection.
All of the above aside, I will give the second book a try. The ending of the first book got interesting enough despite - again - the predictably of it.
A half-orc, a tiger and a gargoyle meet in an arena...
Have you ever loved two authors so much yet you still want to flick them on the nose? That’s how I felt reading this freaking-amazing-yet-dangerous-for-my-heart-health book. Also, why have I never woken up surrounded by my own sexy harem? #LifeGoals
“Because he was our light in a dark place, and we were going to find a way to keep his flame burning bright.” I really don’t know where to start or what to say without giving away too much but I will most definitely say stop whatever you’re doing and read this book. It has it all and so much more. Epic friendships and love; hang-on-to-your-seatbelt action; tears and screams of joy and outrage; beautifully complex and beguiling characters; and all with Theon, who grew on me, as the catalyst and center that begins and ties everything together. I’m still breathless from finishing this book and it’s been hours and a night’s sleep. Phenomenal, incredible, emotional, I need more of this fantastic world in my life.
The good + Braz. Such a sweetheart + Each man having his own personality + The vulnerability the men show when alone with their family + Them calling each other family + Theon waiting for Braz + Everyone immediately sacrificing themselves for each other without a second thought + +
The neutral o I don't know what to do with Florin. He kind of feels like an intruder? I think I would have liked it better were it just the four of them, but I'm sure that'll change in the sequel. I also didn't really understand why he liked Theon so much (it felt kind of superficial) o Some of the jealousy was difficult to deal with, because the actual parameters of the relationships were never really talked about. I hope they'll become one big happy family in the next book
The bad - They waited so long to include Braz! Poor guy :( - The warriors all judged Theon for thinking they were going to do him harm, acting like he had irrational prejudices against them. But everyone instilled this fear on him, what else was he supposed to expect? I feel like they should have apologized to Theon for treating him like a dick in the beginning at some point, because he really was just scared after being enslaved for the very first time - I feel like Theon didn't really have a personality besides being a pretty little human. I sometimes found it hard to believe the other men change so much because of him; I would have preferred a little more depth to him
I would definitely recommend this book and can't wait for the sequel.
I'm always down for a new poly romance, but Theon, Weylyn, Nica, Braz, and Florin's adventure was so much more than that. I feel absolutely giddy after finishing this story, and knowing their journey has only just begun has me chomping at the bit to see what happens next. Because I met Theon first, he'll always have the softest part of my heart, but the other champions and slaves won me over quickly as I watched how kindly they treated each other. It takes a skilled author to write vibrant, magnetic characters and somehow this duo have crafted five incredibly unique but equally lovable men. As I got to know all of them through Theon's eyes, it was fascinating to unravel their hidden secrets and see how they all meshed together into one big open family. The reality of their situation was harsh, but watching their bond deepen and grow was so beautiful that it was easy to get lost in the affection between them. In addition to the wonderful romance, the overall storyline drew me in quickly and kept me captivated, even as my emotions danced all over the place at the unexpected events of the story. This book is not for the faint of heart--some of the things these men had to do to survive were heartbreaking and brutal. Though it was satisfying to see at least some amount of justice be served in this story, there's still a long way to go before these men can ride off into the sunset together. The one thing I know for sure is that no matter where their journey takes them next, I'm going to be eagerly devouring every single page of it and asking for more.
**I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.
I enjoyed this well enough for what it is. The writing is okay but not great, the MC is utterly flavorless but everyone is obsessed with him (a trope I enjoy), the pacing is a bit awkward, but it all comes together into something enjoyable. I jumped right into the second book, so clearly I didn't hate it.
3.5 This book deals with 2 of my less favorite topics: harem and sweet innocence. The first just isn't my cup of tea and most of the time only used to fill a book with as much sex as possible while the later is usually either plain boring or so ridiculously that my eyes take more time rolling than keeping on the pages – and yet Zyon not only found its way into my Kindle but at the end I wanted to stay in that world and know how the adventure continues.
Surprisingly for a fantasy there isn't much world building. We find ourselves in some kind of ancient Rome, just not as one Empire but several small kingdoms where slavery is the norm, gladiators fighting for the glory of their house while nobility lives the sweet life of debauchery and undisguised cruelty – only that the gladiators are shifter or humanoid folktale monsters and the lords and ladies powerful mages. Humans are probably all enslaved. It's an oppressive system, so there are also rumors of a Resistance but the authors decided to focus completely on what happens at the House of Natas. Rarely a sentence about the world outside the close quarters, no big explanation of history or any threatening prophecies. The whole story more or less takes place between the cells of the champions and the fighting ground.
So the book is about introducing the characters and how and why they grow together. The 3 venerit (gladiators) are already a team and 2 of them already a bit more than friends with benefit when Theon is gifted to them as a slave to do what they see fit. Theon, small sweet human as he is, has his ideas about what that implies and the start of their relation is as complicated as expected but of course they're no mindless brutes and while he has his appeal he first becomes their protected pet.
I understood why his innocence is the perfect character value in such a dark place to aid as some kind of catalyst and strangely exactly his progression from pet to lover and his intereaction with his champions who I grew to love at that point let me ignore a certain uneasiness but I hope the next book allows him to grow and become what the other guys are already are: characters and not only an ideal. Only shiny innocence on the one side and selfless protection on the other would be too much for 2 books but I enjoyed it here ... and I'm still surprised about myself that I did.
Poly/menage books can easily feel overwhelming, but I think this book did a good job at developing the characters as individuals, and the various romantic relationships between them. Although the romance between felt a bit underdeveloped, probably because they had much less on-page interaction compared to the others.
I didn't really like the first meeting between Theon and the three champions, and I didn't think the book did a great job explaining why they felt that Theon was pompous and judgemental for reacting with fear to becoming a bed-slave to three warriors he has never met before. Things got better from there though, and I think the multiple POVs helped develop the characters a lot.
This book had just enough world building to figure out what was going on (although the mage/magic parts could have been developed a bit more), and thankfully neither under-explained or lore-dumped. Although the story takes place in a very limited setting we still got some information about the outside world which helped contextualize the characters, but I wasn't really wowed by any of it.
There were definitely dark parts in this book, but it didn't have that overwhelming sense of hopelessness that some captivity books have and the romance was very sweet so I never felt like the book got too dark. Overall it was a nice read but didn't capture me enough to continue the series.
Reread this book because the second one is coming soon. Still amazing
You know you love an author (or in this case, authors) when you get a book without reading a blurb and then proceed to start said book, still without reading the blurb. So I started this book with no expectation but that brought by past experiences with both Michele and Michelle. And, let me tell you, this was all I could wish for in a fantasy series. I can't think of a single thing I'd want to change, add, or substract from it. It has deep moments between all characters, moments of anxiety and tension, very defined personalities between all narrators (so there's no confusion when the POV is switched), a very clear world where things happen and there's a reason for it. I adore character driven books, and this is a perfect example of one. All of the chatacters are well rounded, with clear personalities, preferences, needs and tempers. And it shows in how they push the story forward, both as individuals and as a unit. It is a masterful first step in this series, and you bet I'll be impatiently waiting for the next book to come out!
I absolutely loved this book! I wasn't too sure about it before I started but I hadn't read anything by Michele Notaro I didn't love yet so I went in kind of blind. Michelle Frost is a new to me autor so that's always fun :) This was also the first book with more than 3 mc's for me, so that was a bit of a see where this goes for me too. I shouldn't have worried though. The world building was really good, I really was afraid with Theon at first. But luckily Theon has been pretty lucky in the bad situation he finds himself in. The life of a slave in Zyon is not an easy one, but with the growing love from his champions, I don't think there is much they can't get through together in the end. I just loved them all and now I'm going to have to wait very impatiently for the next book. Just a little warning, This book does not end with a real cliffhanger but the story isn't finished either. This is definitely a series that needs to be read in order. There is also mention of and attempted rape, so if that's a trigger for you, you're better of reading something else.
I love these two authors individually, buy together they brilliantly delivered a mix of fantasy and gladiators tales' of old that kept me breathless from beginning to the end. The story is full of despair and hope, lust and pain, blood and death, tenderness and love - very satisfying.
This was about how Theon’s life was upended when he was captured into slavery and gifted to three Venerit champions. For him began a life of real struggles, everything he thought he knew gone up in dust and his destiny at the hands of merciless masters.
The story was absolutely fabulous and the world amazing to step into. The characters were captivating and impactful. Theon was an incredibly rich character and he captured my heart. I loved seeing how his relationship with the champions grew and changed as the story progressed.
There were so many twists and turns, so many edge-of-your-seat moments that I just couldn't put the book down. Now I am hooked on this fast paced, intriguing series, and I can't wait to have the next book in my hands.
Not well written. Most sentences are awkward and horribly structured run-ons. The first several chapters were painful, and I almost stopped reading.
I continued reading because of the fun characters and intriguing relationship dynamics, which had me hooked early. And I’m glad I persevered, because while the writing did not get much better, the story was so interesting that after a while I barely noticed the faulty grammar. The last 20% of the book was thrilling, and I’m excited to read the next book in the series.
Oh wow! This story has so much going on and grabs your attention from the first page, you can't put it down. The world building is beautiful and terrifying at the same time with the conditions that the champions and slaves are forced to live but at the same time what they make of it is loving and precious. Theon is kidnapped by Lord Natas and given as a prize to the three champions, Braz, Nice and Weylyn. First impressions are somewhat entertaining for the reader and, understandably, it takes time for Theon to feel comfortable in that environment when confronted with a half orc, a tiger shifter and a gargoyle. All are really quite different in personality and demeanour but I think this helps them fit together perfectly as a group. Emotions, both good and bad, run high throughout the book as relationships develop but also situations arise that incur pain and suffering for any one of the people involved. Among the group of slaves, friends are made but also enemies and it takes time to figure out who can and cannot be trusted. Florin is one such character and he plays an important part of how the story develops. It's heart breaking in those moments when any one of the people involved have to make the best of a bad situation, often meaning there will be pain and suffering of the physical and mental kind to at least one person but, often times, what hurts one, hurts them all. The plot of this book, and the series is so good! I cannot wait to read more from these authors. I'm a big fan of Michele Notaro's but this is the first time reading Michelle Frost and it won't be the last. There is action, drama, love, hate, fear and excitement that takes you on a roller-coaster ride with this amazing group of characters. I cannot recommend this enough and am excited for book two!! I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
I loved the story. Wasn't a big fan of the writing style or the polyamory. Fully support the harem though. I think I loved the most.
Last part didn't come as much of a shock since I already suspected it right from the beginning. But, the cruelty was a bit surprising. I honestly didn't expect the punishments and I hope I never have to live in such a world even if it comes with magic in your blood and unbelievable money in your hands.
A wonderful start to a new series - it does end in an HFN, although there is clearly still much to tell. The characters were exceptionally done, and it had fantastic world building. Theon and his found family are slaves, so there is certainly some heartbreak, but they all stand strong together to face any challenges that come their way. Very high heat level (lots of steamy scenes!), but it takes time to get there, so we get to know the characters. I can’t wait for the next book!
😤 A star removed for the reread, due to the second book being a disappointment, and the trilogy still remaining unfinished.

With These Tropes: hurt/comfort ― found family ― size difference ― protective alphas ― the chosen one ― good vs. evil
▪️The writing is mediocre. ▪️The story is simple, sweet, and sexy. ▪️There are a number of sex scenes, but they're not too long or explicit. ▪️It ends with an exciting cliffhanger.
While the middle dragged at times, most of it kept my attention. There's one horrific scene (shared below) that was hard to read. Occasionally it was too sweet, with an innocent hero who's sometimes treated like a child. Characters are portrayed as either all good or all bad, with limited background info provided.
The story is told in multiple POVs.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 📕 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 & 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗼𝘁:
Three kingdoms have cruel mage Lords ruling alongside the kings. Humans and Non-Humans are enslaved and abused, making life difficult. An underground resistance is fighting to change things.
Theon, a young human, is sold to evil Mage Natas, who gives him to his three warrior champions. They've done well in the arena, and brought prestige and honor to their master.
The Three Venerit Warrior Champions: Nica, a red-haired tiger shifter, is in the resistance. Weylan is a gray, bald gargoyle shifter with a beard, whose wing was severed. He's forced to take a potion to stop him from shifting into his stone form & healing. Braz is a huge, green half-orc with tusks. His long mohawk is kept braided.
Nica and Weylan are longtime lovers. Braz, looks rough and believes he's a monster due to mistreatment, but is really a gentle giant longing for love. He's Nica's friend, but clashes with Theon. Braz and Theon connect over their love of books.
Initially, Theon, a virgin, is afraid of the champions. He gradually comes to trust them, developing feelings for all three. When he's first intimate with Nica and Weylan, it deeply hurts Braz. (This part was heartbreaking.) However, Theon chooses to give his virginity to Braz, mending his wounded heart. After that, Theon shares himself with all three.
☹️ I didn’t like that the champions saw Theon as judgmental just bc he was so afraid. They should've talked to him to understand he was very scared, as he’d never been a slave before.
Theon is called, "precious," "angel," and "little bird." His lovers either want to: stare at his beauty, cuddle him, have sex with him, or protect him & keep him safe.
The Plot: The MCs build their relationships and face challenges. Theon befriends other slaves. The warriors train and fight, mostly off-page.
Florin is Master Natas' human bed slave and pet. Small, blond and beautiful, he becomes Theon's friend and one of his fierce defenders.
Sephiran is a bear shifter in charge of training. Cedric is Sephiran's human lover. Samir is a young slave who's clumsy.
Dimas and Kester are wolf-shifters who want to rape Theon. Florin kills Dimas while the three champions are away fighting at the Pelas Games. He then stops Kester in the training yard.
After the warrior champions win the Pelas Games, Lord Natas throws a feast in their honor. He excludes Braz. 😰 This is when the horrific scene happens:
Theon and Weylan both suffer, causing the group to fracture. Theon struggles with losing his friend over a trivial reason, while Weylan is hurt for doing what was necessary. Eventually, they talk and begin to heal.
First, ugh all the "precious boy" "angel" garbage. I can't stand that. I didn't sign up for a daddy book, so being bombarded with cheesy kiddie nicknames got old within fifty pages. And calling him a boy really knocks down the hot factor when they're spending all that time together naked. Which they do a lot.
Second, and more importantly, I read MM to escape the stereotype MF relationship, where she's so weak and he's so alpha and he's got to own her and simply everyone wants her. I can't stand that. But too many times authors turn the so-called weaker male into "the chick". That was blatantly obvious from the get-go.
Third, the twist was not a twist and I had it pegged from page one. It follows the cookie-cutter formula. Still, I did finish the book, although I'm not sure why. Sadly, as much as I enjoyed several of the characters (overlooking the way every single person was absolutely obsessed by Theron, per the formula) I won't be continuing on. I'd hope them all a happy ending, but I don't have to. It's already written.
I really liked the dynamic between our guys. It isn’t perfect, they all have their quirks, but something they all have in common, is that they all come to love their little human.
The plot really picks up in the last 25% of the book, and there will definitely be another book coming. The ending is very satisfactory though. It ends in a good place.
The sex scenes were not too many or too few. They were hot but not scorching.
Theon was just as interesting as cardboard for me. A damsel in distress where his endearment for the other characters could only be his innocence and naivety and I just hate this trope.
Besides that, the world was also too dark for my current mood.
An amazing starting book for a truly detailed and fascinating world with a complicated and profound harem romance!
This is a magical world that has been conquered and molded, with mages at the top and humans, shifters, and all other magical creatures forced into slavery. While slaves can get perks in some roles and gain comforts of they are the best in their role, they are still slaves at the whim of their lords and ladies. Into this comes Theon, a human who confusingly does not know anything about being a slave when he is kidnapped and given as a bed slave as a prize to warrior slaves. Terrified that this new life will be the end of him with pain and horror, he is surprised that the fierce warriors are instead gentle and caring in their private spaces. Slowly Theon learns about slavery and the slaves through Braz, Nica, and Weylyn, and how sweet and complicated each man is. But as slaves their lives are still full of risk and pain, and the mystery of Theon's last is still waiting to come out.
This is not a story that is finished by the end of this book. The relationships between the men were still forming during the books and the wild events happening may throw those feelings into chaos again. There are major problems in this world and the men are caught up in them and likely to have it effect them moving forward. It will be fascinating to learn more about this world, especially with the revelations of the relationships and history at the end of this book. Can't wait to see where this series goes!
Zyon is Amazing! I don't know where to start. First off to be honest I was apprehensive about this book. I have never read a book in the harem genre and I had preconceived notions and they weren't very favorable. However if anyone can knock any genre out of the park it is this duo and I was totally right. There are so many books that when there are only 2 main characters that it is hard not to have a favorite. So how is it even possible that I could love them all! Braz is the epitome of the gentle giant with a tender heart that needs to be cherished. Nica is so kind and has a joyful personality even in their horrible circumstances. Weylen seems to be the most closed off however it is because he is a protector at heart and that comes with a lot of weight. Theon oh sweet Theon he seems like he is so delicate but when it comes to the people he cares about he has a will of steel. So many of the supporting characters are fantastic as well and I can't wait to learn more about them especially Florin (talk about a will of steel) as this amazing journey continues.I am beyond glad that I gave this a chance. I would have missed out on so many amazing characters and this awesome new world!
Okay, lemme just say, that I really fucking loved this first book. I felt a bit of a lag in the beginning but it really was just to set up their dynamics and all their quirks that makes you fall in love with the characters along with Theon. Ahh~ Really enjoyable and wonderfully written.
;A; but also, omg... (major spoiler coming so.. yeah..)
But yeah, anyways, really, really liked it. I'm really looking forward to the next~ I hope it comes soon!!!! >o<
Michelle Frost an Michelle Notaro cworked together to create an amazing new idea of Zion! HM-M Harem, what a way to live a life, eh? Theon, Nica, Wayland, Braz and later on Florin gets involved. All wonderful characters with different races and ifferent past problems that brings all of them together... eventually! Lol If you like midle eart times with magic and sweet and hot harem togetherness, this book is a way to go!
It got a five star from me because it was ifferent than I expected but my my, what an excellent book! Can't wait for the next installment!
Oh my goodness yall this book. Oh, it had me glued to my seat and on the floor and in a ball in the corner of my reading nook. I can't tell you all how much you need to read this book. It is such an amazing book. You fall in love with these charters and you want to hug them and cry with them and love on them so hard. I love them all but nab there is one guy who has nestled inside my heart and I am not ever letting go of him. I think the next book might break me but here is hoping I get put back together again because I am so addicted to this series already just after 1 book.
I loved this book and that’s all the explanation you get. 😂
Seriously, I loved the characters, the storyline, the twists, everything… Though I will admit my anxiety was high the entire book because I was so worried for everyone. Thankfully, the stress was worth it. Honestly it’s not a perfect book but somehow it was the perfect book for me and my mood reader tendencies. Now I’m just mad I have to wait so long for the next book because I need it NOW.
This series will be amazing I can already tell. This had me on the edge if my seat and I didn't see how it ended in this book coming. This is pretty much a HFN as nothing is really resolved in this book. I love these characters and the world. Cannot wait until the next one
Oh my goodness, this book is so amazing! I absolutely loved this story, it was quite simply wonderful. The world building, storytelling and imagination had me spellbound! Theon is a very intriguing character and I cannot wait to read more and discover how all of the relationships develop.
