A young man makes a living delivering coal in a poor South African township. When a young woman's life is in danger, he reveals his true identity as The Stickfighter, master of an ancient African martial art.
When I was a child, my dreams took me soaring through the night sky where I popped into countless futures: an inventor, an explorer, a pilot, a firefighter. There were even serious futures that prickled at the edge of my night flights. Could I be a lawyer like my father or a programmer like Wozniak? But I am me. That's both a blessing and a curse. With a fertile imagination and deep aversion to commitment, I thought why settle for one future when I can have them all? As a novelist and filmmaker, I return to my night flights and recreate all the futures that once snatched my breath away.
In my waking hours, I'm a regular Joe. I get lost in books and love long, solitary walks. It's not uncommon for porridge to be the highlight of my day. Twice. Sometimes thrice. I love my porridge! My 15-year career in screenwriting earned me two Writer's Guild of South Africa Awards and more!
A near-death experience got me to commit to my first novel. I guess writing is like giving birth. Painful but worth it when you see the baby. I'm passionate about the written word.
If I could go back in time, I'd teach my ancestors how to write, so their tales of great men and women wouldn't be lost forever. I dream of a world in which everyone reads to their heart's delight and can make their imagination soar. Help me create that world.
With the threat of sexual violence in the first couple of pages, I assumed that this story was going to go one way. Instead, it sets up a strong female character and the promise of suspense and some really amazing world-building. The writing is as crisp and stark as the artwork. The pacing is fabulous and a lot happens and is foreshadowed in this brief introduction. Looking forward to the rest of this series.
