They’ve both had their fair share of tragedy. Now the only way to heal could be to catch a killer.
Sergeant Brandon Stokes hasn’t been able to face his family for over a decade. But when his parents are killed in an accident on their remote sheep station, the guilt-ridden soldier must face his demons and return home. He’s unprepared for the gutsy female drifter who seems determined to help him reunite with his estranged family.
Amy Hammond has been running since she was fifteen. Now she’s finally found the stability she’s craved with employers who treated her like a daughter. But with her bosses’ sudden death and the arrival of their handsome military hero son, her head and heart are thrown into chaos.
Distrusting Amy’s real agenda, Brandon is forced to team up with her when they uncover evidence that his parents’ demise was no accident. And though Amy knows she needs to win the hunky sergeant’s trust, the sinister turn of events makes her fear any chance of love could be cut fatally short.
Will the troubled couple expose a murderer in their midst before they become the next victims?
Claire Boston fell in love with romance and romantic suspense at eleven when she discovered her mother’s stash of Nora Roberts novels. Like Nora, she writes series set around families or groups of friends with a guaranteed happy ending.
She loves travelling and learning about new cultures and interesting vocations which she then weaves into her writing.
When Claire’s not at the computer typing her stories she can be found creating her own handmade journals, swinging on a sidecar, or in the garden attempting to grow something other than weeds.
Claire lives in Western Australia with her husband, who loves even her most annoying quirks and is currently learning how to knit.
What a terrific start to the Aussie Heroes: Retribution Bay series! From the first words of Return to Retribution Bay, I couldn’t put my Kindle down until I knew just what happened between Brandon and Amy. And, of course, what was going to happen next for the Stokes family after the sudden death of their parents.
I loved meeting these characters—the Stokes siblings are smart, fun, snarky, loyal, and all-around terrific people. I loved seeing them reunited after more than ten years apart—even though it was a reunion due to tragedy.
I also adored Amy. This woman has been through hell and back, and had finally found her home and even though heartbroken over the deaths of her employers, she at times felt like the glue to keeping everything together—including the Stokes siblings.
I loved watching the romance bloom between Brandon and Amy. They were terrific together and just what each of them needed in their life. Someone who truly saw them and wanted nothing from the other but love, friendship, and acceptance. And I loved seeing the Stokes siblings come together to solve the murder of their parents and figure out the way forward with the sheep station.
I’m looking forward to more and seeing where this series takes me next. ~ Missy, 4.5 stars
While I really liked this story, I found myself more wrapped up in the mystery than the romance between the two main characters and was disappointed that there isn't a solution to the mystery in this book. It needed more before I would call it a complete standalone story. That, and I felt the characters could use a little more development along with some hotter spices in the romance department. I'll stop now before I drop a spoiler.
Return to Retribution Bay is book one in Claire Boston's new series, Aussie Heroes: Retribution Bay. After a family tragedy, Sergeant Brandon Stokes left the family farm to join the Army. When he was notified that his parents had been killed in a car accident, he decided to come home even though he was not sure how his family would welcome him back. However, on his return, he finds more than he bargained for: Amy Hammond, who was employed to look after the farm stays community and was out to ensure that he reunited with his family and found the killer of his parents. The readers of Return To Retribution Bay will continue to follow Amy Hammond and Brandon Stokes with a twist in between to discover what happens.
I am so excited that I found another fantastic Australian author. Amazing. I started a new series from book 1, which is usually for me. I had no problem engaging with the plot of Return To Retribution Bay from the first page. I love Claire Boston's portrayal of her characters and how they intertwine throughout this book. Return To Retribution Bay is well-written and researched by Claire Boston. I like Claire Boston's description of the settings of Return To Retribution Bay, which allowed me to imagine being part of the book's plot.
Return To Retribution Bay readers will learn about running a remote property in Northern Western Australia. Also, the readers of Return To Retribution Bay will know the consequences of gambling on the person and everyone around them.
Great start to a new series! The author brings strong characters in Brandon and Amy as well as all the secondary characters. She does a fantastic job building the story and moving it fluidly with her perfectly painted scenes. She brings all the feels and delivers a wonderful story. I'm looking forward to the next book. Loved and highly recommend reading.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
I haven’t been writing many book reviews lately because, to be honest, it takes a long time to organize my thoughts as to why I did or didn’t like a book, but something is calling me to write this one, despite the fact I hate to leave negative reviews.
This was an interesting story about the redemption of Brandon, the oldest brother of four, who left home after the death of Charlie, the youngest. It’s now twelve years later, and he’s had minimal contact with his mother, and none with his father or other siblings in the interim. And then he’s notified that his parents have died in an automobile accident. He knows he must return home and face his family, despite the fact that if they knew what had happened the day Charlie died, they’d despise him even more than they already did.
Brandon gets leave from the army, and travels north from Perth, Australia to his family’s sheep station on Retribution Bay. The Australian setting is engaging and well-developed, and the author does a good job of characterizing the trials of earning a living in this environment, which strikes me similar as to the challenges faced by modern day ranchers in the United States.
There have been changes during the time he’s been gone, of course, the most significant of which is that a young woman named Amy has been hired to manage the new campground. This venture was started to try to bring in more income, since the station has been struggling for several years. There’s an attraction between Amy and Brandon almost from the start.
It isn’t too long before they discover that the accident wasn’t an accident, but an intentional sabotage of the vehicle by cutting the brake lines. And thus starts the mystery of who did it and why.
I enjoyed most of the book as the siblings worked out their relationships while trying to figure out who killed their parents. The reasoning as to why they need to do this (this is a small town with just two police officers) is acceptable, especially when Brandon’s guilt over staying distant for so long is factored in. The romance takes a backseat to the mystery/suspense elements for a significant part of the book, which was disconcerting, but picks up toward the end so that Brandon and Amy can have their HEA.
Speaking of the end, that’s why I gave this book only three stars. There’s a principle in story structure called Chekhov’s Gun, which states that “One must never place a loaded rifle on the stage if it isn’t going to go off. It’s wrong to make promises you don’t mean to keep.” Or, as Anton Chekhov illustrated in The Seagull (1896), Konstantin carries a gun onstage early in the play. The same gun goes off in the final act, becoming a key element to the plot.
The corollary to this is that if you’re going to have a gun go off in the final act, it should appear earlier in the play (or novel) to establish the promise that will be fulfilled. It’s the corollary that’s missing in Return to Retribution Bay. Key elements to the resolution of threads of the story aren’t foreshadowed, but magically appear in the final scenes.
And then, to add insult to injury, in an author’s note at the end, Ms. Boston tells the reader that her editor pointed out two unresolved issues she should have resolved. And rather than reworking the novel to resolve them, she makes the excuse that she really couldn’t do that because they needed to be in future books in the series. So they turn out to be not exactly cliffhangers, because they’re neither about the romance or the murder, but unsatisfactory endings at least.
Now, I will be the first one to admit that working the pieces you need in the final scene(s) into the beginning and middle of the book without giving away the ending is sometimes incredibly difficult. But that’s the author’s job, one Claire Boston didn’t do very well.
Really Great Start to this New Series Claire Boston starts her new Aussie Heroes: Retribution Bay series with a bang with “Return to Retribution Bay.” Having never read any of her previous work (such as the popular Blackbridge series), I was excited to read a new-to-me author, and I was definitely not disappointed. In Book 1, we are treated to a story that expertly weaves together drama, intrigue, suspense, and some pretty intense and steamy chemistry between the hero and heroine. And the bonus is the cast of relatable, beautifully flawed, and loveable characters that Boston has created for the series – most of whom are related to the hero. Sergeant Brandon Stokes, a gorgeous, protective army officer has a whole lot weighing on his heart when he returns home to his family’s sheep ranch after more than a decade when tragedy strikes. Beautiful, feisty Amy Hammond is the guest liaison at the ranch who is fiercely loyal to the Stokes clan, but isn’t so sure about the quiet, brooding soldier now sleeping in the room next to hers – especially when they discover an “it’s a small world” connection that doesn’t necessarily make her feel better about her growing attraction for him. Their budding relationship is tested by targeted attacks against the ranch and family and the subsequent investigation into the dangerous events, but they can’t deny the connection they have between them. And when they act on it…whoa! Boston sure can write a sexy scene. Even the one detailing their first kiss is hot! Brandon’s siblings, as well as long-time family friend, Matt, and Brandon’s army buddy, Sam, only add to the amazingly emotional and suspenseful story, and I shed more than a tear or two as I watched the whole story unfold. CANNOT wait for the second book in the series, and now that I’ve gotten a taste of Boston’s talent, I’m rushing out for her earlier work as well!
I was sorry to say goodbye to the folks of Blackbridge when that series ended, but am now excited to meet everyone in this new community of Retribution Bay. I love Claire's books. They are never simple romances, but also full of mystery, suspense, and personal struggles, all of which make for a great read. Return to Retribution Bay is a great start to a new series. As always, I was immediately drawn into the story by her engaging writing style and well developed characters. The latter is one of the reasons i enjoyed her previous series; her characters became like old friends whom I enjoyed reading about throughout the series. Brandon and Amy are both dealing with the tragedy of the deaths of Brandon's parents, but are obviously also dealing with their troubled pasts. My heart ached for Brandon and his decision to leave his family ten years earlier. Though not explicit in the book, I felt he had misunderstood his father's reaction and in so doing, had missed out on so much. Mistrust and prejudice hinder Brandon and Amy's relationship in the beginning, but we see them gradually unite in their mission to find out the truth. I loved both these characters and look forward to catching up with them in future books in the series. This is definitely a stand-alone book, even though there are a couple of issues that were not resolved. Like any series, not just in books, there are complete stories, but also a story thread that weaves through all volumes or episodes that keep us wanting more. I can't wait to read the next episode in this Aussie Heroes series.
This is the first book in the Aussie Heroes: Retribution Bay series. I loved this book. It's a nice mix of romance and suspense. There is the main part of the story which is the romance between Brandon and Amy and Brandon's return to the station than there is the longer story arc about the company that is trying to buy the station. Amy and Brandon both have issues in their pasts they are dealing with. Amy's not sure about Brendan at first, he's a military man and her experience with those type of men is anything but positive. Brendan feels like a stranger in his family home and isn't sure that his siblings need him, he's been gone years without contact. The book has a nice ending but the mystery of who is behind all the trouble will continue through the series. It's a small cliffhanger but not bad. I hate cliffhangers and this book’s ending didn't bother me at all. It's very well written and I'm very much looking forward to the next book in the series.

Return to Retribution Bay is the first book in Claire Boston’s Aussie Heroes: Retribution Bay series and my introduction to this author’s work. Set in the unforgiving Australian outback; life is hard working a sheep station in this harsh and relentless climate, and even the most resilient of graziers will have their endurance tested. So, a grieving and guilt-stricken man who escaped this arduous life for the military, is unprepared to face the intoxicating woman who has been working for his parents and now strives to repair his fractured familial relationships.
Return to Retribution Bay is an emotional, gut-wrenching and riveting romantic suspense that combines mystery and mayhem, sizzling attraction and sinister plots to captivate the charm the reader. As an Aussie myself, I felt a kinship to these characters and look forward to reading more about the residents of Retribution Bay.

This was real page turner as Brandon was called home after twelve years in the military when his parents were killed in an accident. He had not been home in that entire time, because he did not feel like his father wanted him there. He was worried how his siblings would accept his return home. When he got there only Darcy seemed to have a problem with his return, but they soon worked through it. They had a worker by the name of Amy that had been working for the family for sometime that Brandon found himself very much attracted to that turned out to be one of his team members missing sister. They ended up working together his parents accident as it turned out not to be an accident, but someone had cut the breaklines. There was a great deal of mystery and intrigue as the family tries to figure out who was trying to sabotage the station.

An accident that results in the death of his parents makes Brandon return home after years. Something isn't right about the accident and Brandon finds no peace until he finds out what happened. Amy has been alone since she was 15 and looking for something. She finds that in Bill and Beth's family, until they die. Not knowing what the future holds for her, or whether she can stay where she has found a home, she helps Brandon, Darcy, Ed and Georgina through the funeral.
Uncovering the culprits responsible for Bill and Beth's deaths and a romance between Brandon and Amy heralds the start of a series. At the end of this book, there are still unanswered questions that will be addressed in subsequent volumes. Tension and romance in one book. A well-crafted story that starts slowly but keeps you tied to the story

This book is about a man named Brandon who was a sergeant in the army but has returned home due to the death of his parents in a tragic car accident. Amy is the young woman who works for Brandon and seems to be on the run from something. I guess my reading of this book was filled with questions: What is Amy running from? Was the death of Brandon's parents truly from accidental causes? Are Amy and Brandon in danger? What should they do about the intense attraction they feel for one another? Can they have an HEA? It was enjoying this book as I answered these questions that make me highly recommend the book!

Everyone has problems and have even made mistakes there not proud to own up to and his had him running for the hills. Regrets after all these's years still ate at him but now that he was there things had a very weird vibe to them however he couldn't understand why. She'd been on the move for to long wondering here, there and everywhere but once she was offered what felt like a helping hand she was left stunned by an unfortunate events. Still there were both on edge and extremely unsure of each other however there was a spark between them. Yet there was no denying they were in a race against time before something else happens.

Return to Retribution Bay is a sad but exciting beginning to the new series by Claire Boston. Set in the Pilbara region in Western Australia you can feel the heat, you see the red dirt and you feel the crystal clear water of the Indian Ocean. I was drawn into the plot of this book from the first few pages. I felt the distress of Brandon who is the eldest son of the Stokes family, when he returns to the family farm after the death of his parents. Brandon grew on me, he is a resilient Aussie male with a lot of depth. Amy is a great character. She is a strong woman, she can take care of herself as well as take care of those around her with a loving gentle heart. Her past has not been easy. I really enjoyed this book and as soon as I had finished, I wanted to read the next in the series.
Sergeant Brandon Stokes returns to the family sheep ranch after his parents are killed in an accident. Amy is there and has helped at the ranch for a while. The lead characters are strong and determined, slowly building into a romantic relationship later on. The suspense builds as they find out the accident was no accident and there are attacks on the ranch and them. The siblings enter the picture as they reunite after ten years and are all of good character. Plenty of surprises and twists to keep you on edge. The storyline was full of action and of course the romance aspect, which had me hooked from the beginning. Well done. Can not wait to read more of this group again.

This is a new author for me and a series I am looking forward to continue. Brandon Stokes joined the military after the tragic death of his brother and has never returned. Now over a decade later circumstances are forcing him home, with the death of his parents. He arrives home to find that the deaths of his parents was not an accident and that there is a lot going on with the homestead. One of the changes is Amy Hammond. While the family comes to terms with their parents death, trying to find out why they were killed, who killed them, and can the siblings overcome the past. Can Brandon and Amy come to terms with their feelings for each other and will they survive if Brandon's parents killers decide to strike again
Brandon left years ago, and hasn't done a very good job of staying in touch with his family. Until the deaths of his parents. He doesn't know Amy, who lives and works on the station. They ignore the attraction between them - he's not staying long - but work together to solve the mystery of his parents' deaths when it becomes clear that it was not an accident. I love how the author weaves the mystery and suspense with a sizzling romance and strong family relationships, into a book that I couldn't put down. I was sorry to see it end, but am looking forward to the next book - Darcy's story.

When the Stokes family's tragic loss quickly morphed into murder and a sinister plot to steal their ancestral land, this disjointed family came together to solve a puzzling mystery and save their home. Watching the family heal their raw exposed wounds and restore the family bonds from their youth was very special and touching. I thoroughly enjoyed the various aspects of this story; the very detailed description of the harsh but awe-inspiring landscape, the convoluted mystery, and the bold, magnificent characters that gave us a glimpse into their personallives. Thanks. Good Read!!!!
The first book in the Aussie Heroes: Retribution Bay series a well written story that kept me turning pages. Military Sergeant Brandon Stokes and drifter Amy Hammond's story there is suspense, drama, danger, kidnapping, twists, turns, murder, villains, and two people finding each other. I want to read the next book. I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book is well written and a lovely Aussie Outback ranch style book but it was just a little slow going for me . About half way through I started skipping ahead to find the more interesting parts , but I think that’s more about me and preferring fast paced books . Which this wasn’t for me. This book is also written in 3rd person which isn’t my favorite style so I really think this is a case of it’s not you it’s definitely me .
This is the 3rd book I've read written by Claire Boston; I can’t wait to read more of her books.
This is the first book in the Aussie Heroes: Retribution Bay Series; she has done a fantastic job at writing a good book. I loved the story line and the characters.

I absolutely loved this amazing action packed adventure. All the characters are interesting and entertaining, as well as the story line. This story has adventure, mystery and a journey of love. I highly recommend it. I’m absolutely looking forward to reading the next adventure. Excellent writing. Congratulations!!
Return to Retribution Bay: It was an intense but amazing story! Fantastic writing and amazing characters. Brandon held a lot of weight on his shoulders and blamed himself for what happen many years ago but he also had m8ssed so much. He had to go home because of his family. It was a great!
This is the start of a wonderful reading experience! There’s mystery, skullduggery, sadness and sorrow, and romance of the very best kind. And there’s outback Western Australia in all its fabulous glory; red dust, sand dunes and the sea. My thanks go to the author. This book deserves 10 stars!
This is the start of a brilliant series. I have read them all! Brandon returns home after 12 years for his parents' funeral. Meets Amy, who was working for his parents, and falls in love with her. He realizes the sheep station is almost bankrupt. Brandon and his brothers are being pressured from all sides, especially from Stonefish, but they fight back.
I absolutely loved this book and was honored to have been able to read and review. It was such a phenomenal read and had amazing characters as well as an amazing story line. I just could not get enough of it and once I started reading it I could not put it down. I recommend that you read it.
