Rate this book
August Manning is a freshman at George Washington Carver high school. He is bright and funny and more than capable of handling himself in tough situations. August wants to go to college for free. To do this he has to figure out some things. There are a few obstacles in the way, but August is nothing if he's not resourceful. In an attempt to guarantee college entry he comes up with an improbable two-pronged plan which just might work. The plan is almost derailed when he meets a pretty girl. With the help of his cousin, star basketball player, BB, August and his best friends and a few others come together to attempt to achieve his grand goal. Just One Mo is a high school adventure of friends, who have known each other since grade school, trying to do what no one else was willing to do, while dealing with the drama of high school as well as peer pressure, the mean streets they walk down, girls, racial tensions and trying to get good grades.

Born. Living. Learning. Writing. Southern memories, raised in Chicago and there I began writing. I moved west and was educated at the University of California, at Berkeley. Played collegiate football and rugby. First fell in love with comics. Have always read. Always writing. Became an English major. Took that major to Los Angeles and began teaching. Taught English to middle school and high school and junior college. Was a debate and chess coach. Continue to challenge myself.
Love Shakespeare. Wish to further the amazing writing experiences of those that I have read and read through an African American male lens. My desire is to write with passion and desire a varied style of genres with the hopes of being one of the heralded African American authors that others read and enjoy.

Good Young Adult read

This was my first read by this Author and my first Young Adult read as an adult. I really enjoyed following Auggie through his adventures of high school. The beginning showed him as a very smart young man but as the book progressed he came into his own. Auggie was into science and learning which I really liked. You see a lot of books about young black athletes and not so much about kids who accelerate in school academically. This was refreshing to see. The book showed that with a wonderful support system in his case his cousin BB and his close friends you can accomplish just about anything.

Even as I grew into an adult, I remained a fan of YA novels. This one was my latest read and I can say it was enjoyable!

This story is about a boy named August, the book takes you through his high school days, life experiences, relationships, and struggles. I feel the story does what it's trying to do, and shows you can achieve what you desire with a good support system. August is a very smart kid, but everyone has bumps in the road. In our world right now, mental health is a big thing, as many people struggle with it.

When giving advice for mental health issues, professionals always recommend a good support system, a few trustworthy people you can turn to in your time of need. While this story is not exactly about mental health, providing the message that a support system can keep you afloat, and help you succeed in life is a fantastic message.

This book also deals with the troubles and tribulations of being high school age, the drama, peer pressure, friendships and relationships, striving for good grades, racial issues, and life outside of school as well. It broadly covers the high school experience in a realistic and relatable way, which I think is important in YA novels.

There were a few parts that I was confused with, mainly due to the way it was worded / sentence structure. However, this was few and far in-between, and I could gather what was trying to be said via context, just a bump in the road!

Overall I would recommend this book. I think for young audiences especially, this book can be a positive influence. The message conveyed, as well as the issues dealt with, could inspire somebody in a similar situation to take things into their own hands and boost their chance of success. This book promotes a good support system, working hard to achieve your goals, the importance of academics, and how to deal with the social issues in high school that are often irrelevant later in life. If you're interested in this book, I encourage you to give it a read!

This book centered on August and his high school career and beyond. The author did a good job of conveying what i believe was hos message that with consistent support you can succeed even if it's one person.
The story moved well and i think will resonate with young adult readers. There were a few moments that were a bit confusing based on sentence structure and/or bogging the passage down with descriptive language. All in all an okay read for young adults.

This was the first book I've read by this author. It was different from book I normally read and it took me a month to complete this book. Not really sure on how to rate this book beside giving it 3.5 stars. There were many characters although Auggie was the focus character in the book. The book began on Auggie reaching his freshman year up until possibly his junior year and his life chances dealing with his school friends and peers.

Needed More.

This was a story about August and what he experienced from high school and beyond. This was a great storyline, but there were times I was lost and not sure how we got from one story to the next. I have read YA books before, but I felt this one was a young adult for me. I see what the author was trying to say, but it was a miss for me.

No one said High School was going to be easy. New school. New problems. School psychologist. Girls. Auggie Manning is a youngster with a plan. His plans nearly derail when he meets Mercedes. Thankfully, he has his cousin and his friends to keep him grounded. Now, that plan, is it possible? As long as there are Auggie Manning's around anything is possible.
