Yknow how I mentioned in the previous volume how these fights are getting more gruesome? Jesus FUCKING christ Annasui. Jesus. Also the tree stand. Double jesus

This volume actually made me wish for a Jojo-set romcom drawn and written by Araki. He can write such great shenanigans and the way he draws people interacting is just. Oh my heart. So beautiful. The scene where Annasui was holding Jolyne to bite off the flowers on her face? Man, if that was a scene between two characters in actual love story I'd be losing my goddamn MIND with how beautiful it looked. Araki please give me a good canonical love story. Araki please
Anyway I'm extremely here for Annasui being a goddamn dumbass weirdo creep who keeps confessing his love and Jolyne's biggest reaction just being "-_-". I love her so much. Get wrekt Annasui you weirdo

That flashback to Jolyne getting arrested for the first time and just hoping that this time, her dad will come for her, fucking broke my heart. Goddamit Jotaro

when Jolyne punched Annasui in ch. 81 - it was great, we stan one (1) woman

Love the art! Araki is improving with every next volume.

The fighting sequences were fun, I was afraid I'd grow tried of them, as we now have a general idea of what's going on, but it's not the case.
F.F and Annasui and Jolyne are a good team! I can't wait for them to reunited with Weather dude and Hermes.

For me, this volume was pretty polarizing. There's stuff I liked a lot and stuff that didn't really do it for me.

I'll start with the negatives. Parts of this volume feel like a fever dream- and not in a good way. I can't find any coherent throughline for how or why the bone turned into a monster baby or why people started turning into trees. Maybe Pucci has done something to start the process of the bone turning into a new version of Dio and it's stand is the sunlight tree power? Last we saw, Sports Max made a ghost zombie version of Dio- he couldn't do this. So there would have to be some form of audience deception going on.

Also, it wasn't clear to me what happened with Survivor's user. I liked the references to Santana and ACDC, but why did his ribs do that? According to the wiki, Annasui used Diver Down to set a trap in him. But I didn't realize Diver Down could do that and it wasn't my read of the situation.

On that topic, I like Annasui, I'm not a fan of how he has become the default leader of the group. He's the one strategizing and directing Jolyne on what to do, which I'm not a fan of. I want to see her take the reins.

Lastly, I don't understand in a literal sense where Jolyne's scar of her name came from. Symbolically, I get it, but not in a literal, physical sense. The poor translation doesn't do all of these more bizarre aspects of the story any favors. I almost missed out on Jolyne's realization about her dad because of lousy wording.

Now for the good. Annasui just straight up murks people, which contrasts well with how careful Jolyne has been to avoid murdering her opponents. The last couple of chapters of Dragon's Dreams were pretty good. All 3 characters got some slick moves in. Jolyne continues to speak volumes with her actions, throwing her broken body down a flight of stairs to try and save Foo Fighters. It stands out to me as another one of those badass friendship moments that wouldn't be out of place in something like One Piece. This volume embraces Araki's penchant for body horror, with the electric chair, the tree faced guy, and Jolyne's tongue all sending a chill down my spine.

Yo Yo Ma is another highlight which quickly grew on me. He starts out with these great comedy bits that slowly give way to a more sinister motive. There were a couple moments where I had to stop myself from bursting out laughing thanks to the pacing of these comedy bits. Comedic timing is something that is hard to pull off in Manga, but Araki nailed it here.

I want to talk more about the chapter Father: Jotaro Kujo, Daughter: Jolyne Cujoh. This chapter illustrates the effect Jotaro's absenteeism has had on Jolyne's life. Jolyne is currently at her lowest point yet- she has been through the wringer in this maximum security ward. And her thoughts go to how her father's neglect led her to adolescent delinquency. She comes to realize that he is to blame for much of her problems, but that he had his reasons for being unavailable. He was out saving the world and chose to remain aloof as a way of protecting Jolyne and her mom from getting involved. He does indeed love his daughter, as shown through his unconscious actions in this chapter and his conscious actions earlier on in Stone Ocean. Upon piecing this together, Jolyne renews her resolve and finds a sense of peace and understanding in her relationship with Jotaro that she never had before. This chapter has led me to think more deeply about both characters. In particular, Stone Ocean has made Jotaro a much more interesting character with more depth I think anyone gives him credit for. And what's so great is that you totally can take a face value reading of the story and be fine. But if you think about it, there's much more to the way Jotaro is written than meets the eye. I'll explain.

Initially, I didn't like this chapter. I originally found the idea of Jotaro being an outright bad father to be a more appealing storytelling decision. Look at the Jotaro we see in Stardust Crusaders and Diamond is Unbreakable (to a lesser extent). He is a macho guy steeped in toxic masculinity. He's well suited to keeping a poker face while fighting evil, but not to being a nurturing figure. The inscrutable stoicism that makes him good at stand battles is a hindrance when it comes to being a dad. It makes perfect sense that this emotionally unavailable character would fail as a father. Deep down he does love his daughter, but he is unequipped to express that love outside of a life or death situation. He can face down a 100 year old time stopping vampire, but he can't raise a kid. The untouchable badass has utterly failed. And at first I thought that taking the angle this chapter does would undermine this justified condemnation of Jotaro as a character.

But I came to accept this new perspective on Jotaro when I realized that it still doesn't let him off the hook. Sure, he had his own battles to fight. But he didn't have to do it alone. Giorno went through all of Golden Wind at the age of 15. Jotaro was 17 in Stardust Crusaders. That didn't stop grandpa Joseph from taking him along. Jolyne has shown herself to be more than capable- she is undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with. If Jotaro has indeed come to the conclusion that he must be the one to fight the good fight, he could have taken a teenage Jolyne along with him. He also could have delegated, letting Polnareff, Josuke, or Koichi pick up some of the slack. He also could of followed up on Giorno, whose strong sense of justice and resolve doubtlessly would have led him to help out alongside Mista, Trish, and potentially Fugo. Jotaro didn't have to make the decisions he did.

But I suspect that Jotaro convinced himself that he had to go it alone because the loss of Avdol, Iggy, and Kakyoin left him with deep scars. Jotaro may have blamed himself for not being strong enough and resolved that he wouldn't let anyone else get die. Jotaro didn't have to be the one to go out and try to save the world. And even if he was the one, he didn't have to do it alone. And even then, he could have been there for his kid. She didn't ask to be born. He has an obligation to be there for her and he failed.

4 estrellas.

i hate anasui ❤️ but i love foo fighters and i’m so glad she didn’t get the electric chair. i’m really enjoying the variety of stands in this part so far, i think they are all very creative really do create a challenge for the jolyne—and narratively because it’s what jotaro was trying to keep her away from. the background on her car theft and her father being a vegetable in texas was BREAKING my heart. i can’t take it anymore omg

Since the setting is away from the main prison building I do miss Weather Report, Emporio, and Hermes but I really liked getting to see more personality from Annasui and his interacting with Jolyne. Plus we're getting a bit more movement into the overall story and plot so that's pretty interesting.
