"Vánoce bez rodiny a lahodných perníčků?
Sophie Pembroke writes very British romances for Orion, Mills & Boon / Harlequin Romance, Avon and HQ. She has been dreaming, reading and writing romance ever since she read her first Mills & Boon as part of her English Literature degree at Lancaster University, so getting to write romantic fiction for a living really is a dream come true!
She lives in a little English market town with her scientist husband, wildly imaginative ten year old daughter, and adorable four year old son. She spends her days writing, drinking tea and curling up with a good book. (Oh, and planning. There is a lot of planning.)
In Sophie’s world, happy is for ever after, everything stops for tea, and there’s always time for just one more page…
Claude is a French Bulldog. He loves his human owners the McCawley's. When Daisy & Oliver McCawley start using the new words, Christmas, France and Ferry Claude realises they wont be spending Christmas at home. When his families car pulls away Claude finds himself alone on the street. So Claude's Christmas adventure begins with a belly-flop through the next door neighbours cat flap.
What a great Christmas story this is as it brings the street together in ways you can't imagine.
I would like to thank Net Galley, HarperCollins UK, Avon and the author Sophie Pembroke for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Okay, hands up, I was drawn to this book by it’s cover depicting Claude, a French Bulldog. At home we have a little dog called Charlie and he is a Pug X Shih Tzu, so this book would be very easy for me to relate to.
Claude is left behind when his family go away for Christmas which makes for a good starting point for this novel. It is told from 4 points of view, Charlie the French Bulldog, Daisy a busy mother and Charlie’s owner, Jack the local postman and Holly a neighbour.
I enjoyed reading this novel which is centered around the theme of belonging. It explores the needs of both dogs and people to belong to homes, families and communities. It is a very soft and warm book that is full of love and has a strong whiff of romance too! I found it to be a light, fluffy and bright read. It is well written with no bad language or steamy sex and is suitable for readers of all ages.
I liked how Sophie used the 4 character points of view to tell her story. This structure gave her tale a lovely perspective and promoted great empathy for each character. I found the romance gentle and wished the story would work out well for everyone. Sophie described the behaviour and character of Claude very well indeed. Having owned a similar dog for 4 years, Sophie has got the doggy bits of her story spot on!
I found Claude’s Christmas Adventure to be a very pleasant read. It gave me good happy feelings and I felt warm and cosy throughout. It is a feel good book, perfect for holiday reading or times when you do not want a challenging or gritty read but a novel to wash over you gently with ripples of love. So it gets 4 stars from me for being a GOOD read and a packet of Gingerbread for my dog please!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher HarperCollins UK for giving me a copy of this book on the understanding that I provide an honest review.
Cute dog on cover - check Christmas theme - check Romance - check
What more can you ask for?
Claude’s Christmas Adventure by Sophie Pembroke was a delightful Christmassy read. Yes - it's only September but who doesn't love Christmas. The whole winter wonderland and families coming together.
Christmas for me is all about the family and Sophie Pembroke brings to life the many reason why we hold Christmas so dearly in our hearts. Through the adventures of Claude the French bulldog we find the true meaning of Christmas and togetherness. And that home really is where the heart is.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! I'm now wishing for snow, a cozy fire and a hot chocolate!

I would love to start a campaign to get this turned into a film, it already feels very movie-esque and would become a must watch over the festive season. In fact if I was in the habit of re-reading I would certainly be tempted to read this each year, as it sums up Christmas miracles and human nature at Christmas perfectly.
Claude is a French Bulldog who is ruled by his stomach, he is constantly on the prowl for food, but when a series of slight errors mean he starts chasing arch nemesis, Perdita a cat that lives next door, he finds the family car is driving off without him on the day before Christmas Eve.
Claude has no idea what that moment will mean in the end to not just him, but everyone on Maple Drive, in the run up to Christmas. Claude has this way about him that leads to various humans wanting to help, and in doing so they end up helping themselves.
Each chapter is split into three perspectives, Claude's which is always great as I love seeing the world through the eyes of an animal, Daisy who is Claude's human and mother of 4, and then Jack or Holly. Jack is the Maple Drive postman who is a bit disappointed that Maple Drive doesn't have the sense of community that he thought it would, and Holly loves crafting, and baking and Christmas, but is alone this Christmas.
We get to see the various ways a two day period play out from different points of view, and from what starts as reasonable paced sweet sounding story, turns into the most wonderful and heart warming of tales.
There are laughs to be had, and not just from Claude's antics, but also incidents involving Daisy's trip to France and what happens in her parent's chateau, while from Holly and Jack we get two people who are starting up a fledgling friendship while they wait for Claude's family to return.
Claude's Christmas Adventure is a big hearted, festive feast of a story, with all the gingerbread you could ever want, and with a gorgeous dog with unusual ears, plus a whole cast of characters, including a meanie I just wanted to boo at, this is a fantastic story to read at Christmas.
Thank you so much to Netgalley and Avon for this review copy. This was my honest opinion.
Claudes Christmas Adventure is such a heart warming Christmas tale of a gorgeous bulldog who is left alone at Christmas with a constant appetite, and a craving for gingerbread, that gets him into some mischief.
I have a dog and I can't imagine what it would be like to leave him behind let alone how he would cope. Claude is a strong lil pup with a thirst for adventure, survival and a rather big appetite. He meets some interesting characters along the way!
Claudes owners the Mc Cawleys decide to take a Christmas Holiday, but unfortunately Claude finds himself alone and on his street when he misses the car.
However as soon as the Mc Cawleys realise Claude is missing they do everything they can to make it back to him.
Claude soon finds he's way into a neighbours house by belly flopping he's way through the cat flap. In need of food and survival, he's adventure begins.
I love how the story has been written by four people's prospectives. You get a different take on the story bringing it to life. It takes a chapter or so to get used to this style but after a while you realise it works.
The story is so beautifully written with an eye catching cover who could resist such a charming story. It has everything you need to make a great Christmas story. Friendship, adventure, adorable & cheeky dog, baking, community spirit, love, humour, bringing people together.
I hope you all enjoy Claudes adventures as much as I did. I have a dog and I can't imagine him even being able to squeeze in through a cat flap! Especially without getting a bonk on he's nose first!
I really recommend this book to everyone not just animal lovers, as there is a little something for everyone!
I received this book from the Publisher in exchange for a honest and fair review via NetGalley.
A jeden stratený psík im k tomu pomáha.
Krásny, milučký príbeh, kde jeden stratený psík spojí celú ulicu, vytvorí nové priateľstvá a rozdáva radosť kade chodí. Na svoje si príde každý milovník Vianoc, zvieratiek a príbehov so šťastným koncom.
V jednej kapitole Daisy, matka 4 detí a majiteľka zatúlaného francúzskeho buldočka, rieši náročnú cestu do Francúzska a v ďalšej kapitole Huga trápi susedova mačka a prázdny žalúdok.
I think this is a well written story, with "human" characters that one can relate to. I liked that the story is told from a variety of POV and that each chapter heading stated who was telling the story. The story flows well, even though there are different characters telling it. It is a charming story about family, community, loneliness and compassion; kind of what you would hope and expect a Christmas themed story to contain. The main character and hero of the story is Claude (as the title implies); a black and white french bulldog belonging to the McCawley family. Claude inadvertently gets left behind when his family is leaving for a trip to France, to spend the Christmas holiday with Daisy McCawley's parents, at their new chateau. We get a glimpse into the lives of the McCawley's, and a few other people that live on Maple Drive, from December 23rd through December 25th and how Claude manages to survive on his own until his family realizes he's missing and try to make it back home to him.
I received an ARC of this book in, e-book format, from the publisher,Avon/Harper Collins, through Net Galley, in return for an honest review.
Will the McCawley's make it home in time for Christmas? Will Claude ever have a full tummy again (especially of gingerbread)?
This Christmas a little dog is in for a big adventure...and so are you as the reader! Even though it's Fall get the hot chocolate and Christmas crafts ready and prepare to have your heart strings pulled.
Poor Claude accidentally gets left behind from the family excursion across the channel just a few days before Christmas with no warm comfy basket or full food bowl. So what is a sensible dog to do? Belly flop through a cat door flap, of course, and into an amazing adventure with new friends and old adversaries.
This is a fun story about community, friendship and love. I was happy with the ending but sad that the story ended. I would recommend it to anyone whether they need to get in the Christmas mood or not. Thank you NetGalley, Avon Books UK and of course Sophie Pembroke for a wonderful Christmas read!
The cover of this book was enough to make me want to read it! Claude is a much loved pet and is all set to go to France for Christmas with his people. A miss-timed chase of a neighbourhood cat and a chance placing of a soft toy mean they go off without him. Being without his people is bad enough but not knowing where his next meal is coming from is a disaster for poor Claude! However his plight totally changes Christmas for a number of people and makes a community out of a suburban street.
Told from Claude's point of view as well as other people in the street and in the family this is a lovely heartwarming read that I really enjoyed. Thanks to Netgalley for giving me the chance to read and review this lovely book.
As soon as I saw a dog on the cover of this book, I knew I needed to read it. I adore dogs. And as i have read Sophie's work before, i just knew it would be well written too. This was a wonderful heartwarming tale of this cheeky little dog, it had my old chuckle muscles working overtime with all of the antics. The Characters in the book are very likeable and all in all this is a lovely Sunday on the Snuggly Sofa kind of book. I adored it. Thank you to the publishers and netgalley xx
Claude's Christmas Adventure, by author Sophie Pembroke, is one of the cutest Christmas stories that I've read. Claude is a French Bulldog who inadvertently loses his family at Christmas, yet brings together a neighborhood while searching for them Thanks to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK, Avon for the advance copy.
Pre milovníkov buldočkov je táto kniha must have, must read! 😍
Presne takto by to malo vyzerať v každej vianočnej knihe.
Hlavné, aby ste boli so svojimi milovanými… ❤️❄️
This was such a cute fun Christmas story about a dog, Claude, who’s family goes on holiday and leaves him behind by mistake. Some shenanigans, fumbling around, restoration of the Christmas spirit, and a bit of romance ensue. It’s an uplifting light hearted story. Perfect for this time of year and most of it is told from the POV of Claude, the dog!
This is a really cute story about a French bulldog, Claude, who inadvertently gets left behind by the family to which he belongs, as they head off to spend the holidays with grandparents in France. The family does not realize Claude has been left at home until they are on the ferry between England and France. Once this happens, they spend many frantic hours trying to find a way to get back to their house and hopefully be reunited with Claude. Claude, meanwhile, begins an adventure extraordinaire in his own neighborhood, managing to befriend the community people and pets, while bringing home the true meaning and spirit of the holiday season. The book takes the reader through many twist and turns, from Claude’s point of view in most cases, as he tries to figure out what has happened and how to right this grievous wrong while managing to survive on his own. This book is definitely, as one reviewer stated, the stuff that wonderful holiday movies are made of, and I sincerely hope this one ends up a holiday movie soon. There is a little bit of everything in the story for everyone, and will definitely get any reader into a solid holiday spirit. Face it, it is only early October and the temps are hovering around 85 degrees here in Florida, and I am already dreaming of snowy winter scenes the holiday and holiday movies often bring. The characters and writing throughout are very well done and allowed me to escape my busy days to become part of the little community where Claude lives. A secondary romantic plot also only enhanced the reading. This is a great book to curl up with any time, even if not the holiday season. It is definitely one for dog lovers. I highly recommend it. I received this from NetGalley to read and review.
Sophie Pembroke's Claude's Christmas Adventure is a heart-warming festive story filled with true magical Christmas adventure and romance. The author writes from four perspectives, Claude, Daisy, Jack and Holly.
Claude - the family dog, who gets left behind after escaping his crate as the family leave to spend Christmas with Daisy’s parents who have just purchased a French chateau.
Daisy – wife to Oliver, mother to Jay, Bella, and twins Lara and Luca.
Jack – postman who lives on Maple Drive but is disappointed that place he has decided to call home is not as friendly as it looked. He lives there and delivers everyone’s mail but as yet doesn’t have anyone to call a friend. It is not the community he expected it to be.
Holly – lives alone after being dumped by her fiancée when he got a great job offer. Holly loves when Jack brings her parcels of crafting supplies which she buys to keep her busy rather than thinking of all that she has lost.
The story covers two days just before Christmas where Claude’s escape and adventure touch each and every resident of Maple Drive in a way no-one would expect… but in such a way that everyone will always remember.
MoMo’s Book Diary loved Claude’s Christmas Adventure and recommends this as a fun 5 star read.
I would like to thank NetGalley and Avon for the opportunity to read and review this book prior to its release.
CLAUDE’S CHRISTMAS ADVENTURE is a gem of a novel this Christmas season!
The first thing that I love about this book is its structure. Each chapter is divided into character parts, which then tell the story from their own point of view. I really enjoyed this part of the book, as I feel that it really lent itself to the reader being able to become part of Claude’s Adventure.
Secondly, once I came to know the characters, they were like my friends. I cared about them, and about what happened to them.
Thirdly, whether you are a dog or cat lover (or both), I think you will fall in love with Claude and his point of view. Having owned dogs and cats for years now, I can honestly say that I was surprised by this funny little protagonist’s ideas and thoughts.
I felt a full cycle of emotions from sadness, to actual tears, to triumph! You also get packaged into the novel a budding romance, the trial and tribulations of travel, and the loneliness that the holidays can bring. If you’re looking for some festive reading with the added bonus of a dog as the main character this Christmas season, this is the story for you!
It took me a few pages to get into this book. It opens with the story being narrated by the Claude of the title, who is a French bulldog, and I had a ‘hmmm’ moment until I discovered that Claude’s narrations only feature once in each chapter, the rest being handed over to the author to tell us events in the third person, focussing on a particular character at a time. I quickly became a convert to this way of telling the story. It works very well, as Claude is a likeable character with a dry wit and a nose for trouble, and author Sophie Pembroke has a wonderful touch. There are brilliant, laugh-aloud scenes as well as some that have you reaching for a hanky. She creates some fabulous characters for us, principal among which are Daisy, harassed and underappreciated mother of four and wife to Oliver, Jack the ex-soldier postman looking for, well, something, and Holly, attempting to recover from a broken heart. This is an eventful, clever, enjoyable seasonable tale featuring a lost dog who manages to bring some lost souls together and make Christmas as magical as it’s meant to be.
Claude is a really nice little dog. He loves his family, home and his food. His family are nice too. Their Christmas holiday involves taking him with them to France rather than dumping him in kennels. Unfortunately this doesn’t happen. Despite Daisy being the beleaguered mother of twin babies and a small boy plus a tech mad teen – she, as they all are, are anxious to get back to the missing family member. Meanwhile the young pup only knows through hearsay how terrible the Pound is and finds himself suddenly a fugitive. Perdita is a lovely character and really gets the Christmas spirit. She helps this little neighbor and between them the whole street gets involved.
Perdita belongs to Holly, who is filling her life with craft instead of the errant fiancé, by the start of Christmas day she find she no longer needs to do this. Yet another triumph for loveable Claude.
This is an entertaining holiday story. Claude is a lovable French Bulldog who is ruled by his stomach.
When he is left behind as his family travels to France for Christmas, Claude sets off on his own adventure. Cat doors, gingerbread and his nemesis Perdita, are just a few of the things that Claude confronts during his wild adventures.
I thought this was a great holiday story. The author really sent Claude on a crazy adventure and it was fun to read about his mishaps.
I voluntarily read an ARC of this book from NetGalley. This book will appeal to anyone who loves a great holiday story.
A cute holiday "Home Alone" like story around Claude the dog. It's a light read that will make you smile and enjoy how a dog can bring a street together at Christmas.
I was given a copy of this book by NetGalley for my honest review.
3.6 stars Completely enjoyable and definitely endearing. There is not a thing I didn't like in it, but for some reason it isn't my favorite. I warmly recommend it, anyway. Awesome cover.
🎁A poviem vám nechýbali ani dojemné časti, keď som 23. Decembra sedela v Starbuckse a popíjala svoje “Gingerbread latte” mala som čo robiť aby som nezačala v kaviarni plnej ľudí plakať
@na_ruzovej_policke
Thank you to Netgalley, Harper Collins Uk Avon and Sophie Pembroke for the opportunity to read this book for an honest review.

This is a very sweet Christmas story about a loveable French bull dog and his massive Christmas adventure.
This is a very sweet story that I'm sure everyone will love and will leave you with the Christmas spirit and feeling like you need a Claude in your life.
Claude is a French bull dog who lives with the McCawley family at 11 Maple Drive. Claude is extremely excited for Christmas and the all the yummy treats it brings. That is until he hears his human family talking about a chateau and France. Claude then realised that he won't be spending Christmas at home.
When the family is packing everything in the car Claude gets left behind. Which starts off his big Christmas adventure. What follows is the whole street coming together for Christmas and spending it a way they never expected.
I checked this out of the library during a blistering June heatwave in search of something to cool me down, and this certainly did the trick.
When Claude the French bulldog gets mistakenly left behind by his family just before Christmas, he plays a big part in bringing the neighbourhood together. The action switches between four different characters: mom Daisy, frazzled and overwhelmed; Jack and Holly, two lonely folks in the neighbourhood who bring the community together; and Claude himself, at first sure that his family will return soon, then beset by worries about abandonment or the pound, and having discovered a new love for gingerbread.
I really enjoyed all of the different points of view. The story never got too cutesy, at least IMO. Holly in particular had a nice arc as she grew more confident and stood up for herself. And I’m a sucker for an animal POV, so I loved all of Claude’s sections. He really did make me feel sorry for him when he was afraid and enthused about his love of treats.
This was just the pick-me-up I needed on those sweltering summer days.
It’s a sweet little story with a predictable ending, but still a nice read. You’re introduced to several humans: Claude’s family, the postman, several of the neighbors. Plus there’s a cat that may be good or bad, depending on her mood.
The book jumps from one POV to another, with several of the characters having interesting back stories. I especially enjoyed the postman’s, Jack, story, as well as Holly’s, the young woman who fills her time was crafts. They’re all brought together as they try to reunite Claude with his family. In a way, it's really more their story than Claudes.
Oddly enough, I wasn’t all that taken with Claude. I’ve read several books where the dog has a “voice.” I think this one was a tad too sweet for me.
