Hook's Little Mermaid

Rate this book
Captain James Hook was once a good man trying to make a somewhat honest living. He is a pirate, after all. However, after getting word that a boy named Peter Pan played a part in the death of a dear loved one, Hook makes it his sole purpose to hunt down and destroy the fiend.

On his journey for vengeance, the captain encounters many new comrades, including a young girl named Red and a fairy called Tinker Bell, and both push him to reconsider his desire for justice.

The accidental rescue of a mermaid leads him on a whirlwind adventure in Neverland. The journey is not a simple one, considering Pan, the Lost Boys, mermaids, and magic all come into play. After several misadventures, Hook must choose between the possibility of a new life with love and his much-desired retaliation against Pan.

Once everything is said and done, will the captain be able to overcome his need for revenge? Will he let compassion steer him toward love? Or will Captain Hook live up to his villainous reputation?

"Hook's Little Mermaid" by Suzanne Lynn is a wonderful (I don't think I can say it enough times) mashing together of 2 classic stories "Peter Pan" and "The Little Mermaid".
Anyone who knows me will tell you my favorite Disney movie is "The Little Mermaid" and "Peter Pan" (along with The Wizard of Oz) are 2 of the books in my library that I have owned the longest. So when I read this blurb I was interested in reading the story.
From the blurb "Captain Jameson Shaw (Captain Hook) was once a good man trying to make a somewhat honest living. He is a pirate, after all. However, after getting word that a boy named Peter Pan played a part in the death of a dear loved one, Hook makes it his sole purpose to hunt down and destroy the fiend.
This is an amazing story filled with adventure and at times a tender, heartbreaking story about loss. The story took me hostage from the very beginning and held me tight till the very end. Captain Shaw (soon to be known as Hook) is a character that rises well above the pages of the book to not only propel the story forward, but to captivate and engage the reader. His pain at the loss of his son and his misguided need for revenge are so real one can not help but feel for him, as well as understand him.
The story is written excellently, taking the reader on an adventure with so much suspense you can easily find yourself turning pages to the "wee" hours of the night. The author does a marvelous job of keeping the reader entertain and guessing at what will come next with plenty of twist and turns, never once losing or confusing them. The characters are all (except for Hook) true to form, which is something else I loved about this book, Peter Pan is who he is in every way, making his blending into the new (Hook) story so much more complete. From Tinker Bell, Neptune, Red (Little Red Riding Hood) to Zerena (if you want to know what part she plays you will have to read the book) are all marvelously done, all characters (including Hook) that will stay with you long after the reading is done.
The world building is on par with the characters. Ms Lynn creates a world that is a perfect balance of elements from both stories, creating not only a unique world, but one that is at the same time familiar and comforting.
I can honestly say that I will never again see Captain Hook in the same light as I saw him before reading this story. I think that says a lot about the impact the story had on me.
The book is available for the Kindle on Amazon, get it, read it, enjoy it and you will love it.

I will start by saying that this is the first book I have read by Mrs. Lynn. I have always been fascinated with Peter Pan and even Hook. This book is as much Fantasy and Fairy tale, as it is should I dare say Fan Fiction. In this book we get to see a different side to Captain James Hook.

Captain Jameson Shaw is out for revenge on Peter Pan. James is on the hunt for Pan for the death of his son. I really liked Hook in this book. I thought even though he was a pirate, I thought he was sweet (at times) and caring (at times). I liked seeing him wanting to help people out at times.

I can't say there was really a love interest until towards the end of the book. The author does wonderful job of weaving together different lands and taking us through them. I kind of feel this book was kind of a twist on Peter Pan and the Little Mermaid mixed together.

This book was probably one of the lightest reads that I have had in awhile. By that I mean it was mostly just a tale and journey that Jameson Shaw was on. There really was no romance in it, though you could tell something was brewing.

I'm giving this book 4 Stars Out of 5 and would recommend it to anyone loves fantasy/fairy tales and it would be very suitable for younger people!!!! I can't wait for more!!!!!

***I received an arc of this book from the author for my honest review***

I was given a book in exchange for an honest review free of persuasion from the author or anyone else affiliated with this book.

It is the story of Captain Jameson Shaw later known as Captain Hook. It is his back story. It is his quest to avenge the death of his son who was kidnapped by Peter Pan. He wants his revenge and will stop at nothing. Of course when there are males involved a woman becomes involved and everything becomes complicated. It is a great mashup of classic tales with a really unique spin.

I was extremely impressed with this book. The story moved so fast that I found myself devouring this book pretty quickly. I'm always interested in a good back story and I thought Captain Jameson Shaw was a perfect character to choose. I just couldn't get enough of him. He was my favorite character because of his strong and moral values even for a pirate. You got see him in evolve from pillaging to saving. It was a unique and refreshing. My favorite moment was the final battle in Neverland. I can't say much because I don't want to give anything away. It was epic. My favorite line was at the end "It's Hook now. Captain Hook!". It gave me chills. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys Peter Pan or a good mermaid story.

Hook’s Little Mermaid by Suzanna Lynn is an imaginative mashup of two well-known classics, “The Little Mermaid” and “The Wizard of Oz”.

The story is reminiscent of the world created in the tv show “Once Upon a Time”, full of intrigue and magic. We are introduced to Red (as in Red Riding Hood), Tinkerbell, Peter Pan and the Lost Boys, Captain Hook (James Shaw), the Little Mermaid (her name is Elynne in this rendition), Poseidon, and the sea hag.

My favorite was Captain Shaw aka ‘Hook’. He began with good intentions and a kind heart. As usual, it’s the circumstances that influence a person’s behavior. Captain Hook isn’t immune.

I also enjoyed the character of Elynna. She’s nothing like her Disney counterpart. She’s intelligent, caring, and brave.

I loved how Lynn fleshed out the details surrounding each character. Everyone has a reason for why they became the villains or heroes we’ve come to love.

I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

Hook's Little MermaidI have grown up knowing the traditional story of Hook and Peter Pan. This book gave me a new look at Hook and one that caused me to fall in love with him for the first time. I have always seen Hook as the enemy. This story shows a different side of Hook and the best yet it shows his heart. The best example i can give of this is at the very end of J.K Rowling's Deathly Hallows. You see Severus Snape in a new light when you see past his animosity for Harry and see his love for Lila Potter. In Hook's Little Mermaid you get to see that not only does Hook have a heart but how he cares for someone beyond himself. I hope many will read his book and fall in love with Hook as I did!

::..Reviewed for Red's Midnight Readers..::

I was given an ARC of this in exchange for an honest review.

This tale is centered on Captain James Shaw, who we come to know as Captain Hook later on in story and his vengeful quest to take down his nemesis Peter Pan. Along the way we meet fairies, mermaids, witches and much more in this fabulous re-telling of a classic fairy tale.

Suzanna Lynn is a real class story teller! I absolutely loved the twist she put on this story and the fact it was told from "Hook's" point of view was very, very clever. I never thought I would find myself liking Captain Hook's character but in Hook's Little Mermaid, he went from Villain to hero.

I will never be able to look at Peter Pan the same ever again!!

I gave this fabulous story 4 stars.

I really enjoyed this book. It's a new spin on Captain Hook and I was hooked from the start. It starts off with a bang and keeps you flipping the pages, it starts at seeing the captain doing his thing and in search for something, it keeps getting better from there
I love the title and can't wait to see what this author has in store for us!

I enjoyed this book and found it fascinating how easy it was to blend The Little Mermaid with Peter Pan. Hook is a compelling main character, and I didn't guess all the twists right away. The ending was satisfactory, if not exactly happy, and I REALLY can't wait for the next book!

This is a remarkably fun and exciting read. It's a refreshing twist on an original fairy tale. Captain James Hook tells us his story on how he became an evil, vindictive pirate. The characters are phenomenal and the story-line made this book very hard for me to put down. I sat and read this whole book in one sitting. I enjoyed every detail from beginning to end and I highly recommend this story to all ages between teen to adult to enjoy. It's a truly remarkable love story with a sad and frightful ending. I have never read anything from this author before and I am extremely anxious to read more of this author's work and her talent for enchanting her readers with her magnificent storytelling. She sure knows how to spin a take and keep us craving more from beginning to end.

I enjoyed Hooks Little Mermaid despite the fact, Peter Pan is my least favorite fairytale! I really liked the spin Suzanna Lynn created, keeping true to the age old story while putting her own imagination in the world of Neverland! The writing was good giving me a good pirate feel to the first person narrative. (I was totally picturing the guy who played captain hook in Once Upon a Time and Mr.Smee as Mr. Gibbs from pirates!!) I was only irked by tinkerbell as her name stayed true to the original fairy but her clothes were different.
I couldn't believe the ending though, I was certainly sitting on the edge of seat gasping at all the information thrown at me! talk about a kind blown moment! Hooks Little Mermaid was a great light read especially if you are into current contemporary fairytales!

The perfect read for fans of fractured fairy tales, Peter Pan, Once Upon A Time, Disney cartoons, Roman myths, and just those who enjoy a new spin on an old tale.
If I'm being completely honest, the cover caught my eye and made me want to read this book without even reading the blurb. It's gorgeous in the hues of blue with splashes of complimenting orange. Add in a dashing pirate and a mermaid and it brings up thoughts of childhood adventure stories. While judging a book by its cover can go terribly wrong it certainly didn't in the case of Hook's Little Mermaid. With twists and turns, swashbuckling action and tender moments alike Ms Lynn keeps her readers turning pages with the speed of a hurricane gale.
I eagerly await the next installment of James' story and can't wait to learn more about his mate Rosalee in Red's tale as soon as it releases.

This is a fun fairy tale adventure appropriate for all ages. The author skillfully weaves together familiar fairy tale characters and recognizable worlds with a unique new twist and offers interesting and sometimes painful origin stories. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. I connected to the characters easily and the beautiful details and unmatched imagery fully immersed me within their world. I felt like I was watching it as a movie play out in my head while reading and could easily envision the characters too (think Hook from Once Upon A Time). The author does a good job balancing the introduction of characters and back story with action and progressing the story making this a quick and satisfying read. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves Disney classics, fairy tale reinterpretations, or Once Upon A Time and can't wait for the next book to be released.

This was a fun retelling with a nice spin--look forward to the rest of the series!

Captain Jameson Shaw, or Captain Hook as we know him, is on a mission to find Peter Pan, who he blames for the death of his son. I don't want to go into much more detail and spoil the story, but along the way he meets a fairy, some mermaids/mermen, and Peter Pan himself. Some of these characters can't be trusted, of course. He faces several dangers along the way: kraken infested waters, the merfolk who are known to rip men apart and sink boats, and a visit to Crocodile Beach.

There's also another less prominent storyline threaded through that will work as a segue into another fairy tale retelling.

I was provided an ARC by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Nice book by Ms. Suzanna. (For me) Not as captivating as The Bed Wife Chronicles but still a good read and has it's own character and angst.

Hook's Little Mermaid is about Hook's, of course, adventure with his crew and of course a mermaid. Anyway, he won't be known without Peter...his nemesis.. With Peter's part of the death of someone he holds dearly, Hook is determined to destroy Peter. As the story goes, he will meet a mermaid accidentally (accidental rescue), and form there more interesting things will happen to him and also all the characters in the book.

Ms. Suzanna did an amazing job for making this book full of surprises and intriguing! I can't wait for Hook's next adventure!

Interesting spin on the well-known stories of Captain Hook and the Little Mermaid, a bit long-winded at the beginning but with quite some spins and deep emotions. I'm not quite sure if I really like the hero or if he is more of the Hook we know (and dislike) than he wants us to believe but the Peter Pan is very interesting, very detailed and psychologically believable. The ladies are a not as deep and while I really liked Tinkerbell I would have enjoyed to have a stronger, more badass and evil villain in the story. All in all an enjoyable sunday read and I think I want to know more about the story when it delves into Oz...

I absolutely adore concepts like these that give a deeper, alternative take on classic characters. While it was an enjoyable read, I felt Hook's character lacked a complexity that could have taken this story to a whole new level. Hook lacked the true pirate nature, the hardness that comes with losing someone dear, and the commanding presence that is required of a captain. Captain Hook by all accounts was a feared and respectable pirate. I wish I could have seen more of that particular side of him, that eventually grows into an 'unlawful good' character.

If you are looking for a simple, fun, easy read then this is definitely one to check out!

This was a quick and fun read. I loved seeing a new side to Captain hook, it is nice to understand the reasons behind what he does. Although this isn't a children's tale it has a light and whimsical feel about it. I will continue reading this series, I am excited to see how the tales that we read/watched as children will unfold and how she connects each one.

Lovely story. It held my interest from the moment I opened it. I will say that I totally saw Hook from Once upon a time in my head the whole time but that was just my added fantasy. Can't wait for the next book!

Captain James Hook wasn’t always a pirate and he didn’t always have a hook, he started off as a humble fisherman, but when it didn’t bring in any wealth, he decided to rename his ship the Jolly Roger and hoist the black and white flag of a pirate, but he was an honest pirate at least and did give back to the poor on occasion, however, that all changed when he went on a quest to kill Peter Pan to avenge the death of a loved one.

This journey was not as easy as he first thought, but he had made a start by knowing he had to go to Neverland to find him, so he pulled into one of his well frequented ports and went to visit an old friend to get some information on how to trap a fairy and once he had acquired that fairy called Tinkerbell and hashes out a deal, he stopped in an another port of call for supplies. While acquiring the means to cross the seas to Neverland, the Captain befriends a young woman named Red by the locals when he comes to her aid in a marketplace, in return he receives some valuable gifts and information, as well as a new acquaintance, or maybe even a friend.

As he nears Neverland and his nemesis, Captain Hook comes across a deadly sea creature and hopes his acquisitions will allow him to sail swiftly from it’s clutches and when he arrives, he sees Peter Pan and puts his plan into action, however, he is foiled by the wily fairy and doesn’t attain his goal. Meanwhile, he just can’t resist helping a damsel in distress, or becoming in distress himself and between storms, mermaids, magic and Lost Boys, this adventure is turning out to be one of many twists and turns, but can he resist the pull of vengeance, or will his one of his rescued damsels convince him to turn from that path? This is a story for all ages as this retelling steers you through dangerous waters and leads you to a destination you can only reach by reading through to the end.

This book is an imaginative retelling of the evergreen children’s classic Peter Pan. The book’s central character is Captain Shaw, whom we know as the notorious Captain Hook in Neverland. This tale is about the humane side of Captain Hook and what caused him to be the notorious man he is known to be.
Captain Hook was a pirate, and was an honest pirate with his heart in the right place. He cared for his crew, and the women who came into his life, even for a brief fling. He begets a son from one such fling, is kept away from him for several years till one day, he is united with him. But his son joins the Lost Boys troop of Peter Pan and gets accidentally killed in one of the pirate encounters. This causes Hook to seek vengeance against Pan. He tries different venues to get to Pan, but is incapacitated with his inability to fly. To get near Pan, he first captures Tinkerbell for fairy dust, then befriends a beautiful witch who claims to be the sister of the Sea God Neptune, and falls in love with a mermaid who is Pan’s best friend.
But in his plotting and scheming, he loses his edge and falls prey instead of being a predator. Desperately in love, and now a target to an evil power, Hook tries to hold on to the humane side and for a brief time even forgets about his vengeance with Pan for the greater good.
But will his good side prevail and make him a better person? Or will the cruel fate take away what he is holding dear to heart and make him an evil heartless villain? That forms the crux of this story.
The language is beautiful and the book is a very easy read. But I did have some qualms on the plot. I felt it a little convoluted at few places. But I really enjoyed this imaginative retake on one of my childhood classics.

I was absolutely enthralled by this. I was a little worried as Peter Pan is one of my favourite stories from my childhood - the whole no-growing-up thing is something that I still live by – but this was just fantastic and there was honestly no way that I wasn’t falling in love with it.
Lynn takes Hook from being an out and out villain to a sympathetic character, who despite years of being programmed to hate the pirate, found myself rooting for him. I loved the way that Lynn took elements that everyone knows and loves from the classic tale and puts her own spin on it that makes something more magical than the original. I know, I can’t believe it myself and honestly, I feel like it's sacrilege to even say it, but I don’t think I can go back to the original Peter Pan now without being forever changed by this book.
This is a fun read, that also has a depth to it that was wonderful to explore, anyone looking for a new and refreshing take on a beloved tale, this is perfect. I adored every second of it and cannot wait to read the next tale.

Hook's Little Mermaid (The Untold Stories #1) by Suzanna Lynn

This is the first book I've read by Lynn. It won't be my last. The Untold Stories Series is a Fairytale retelling of Captain Hook and Little Mermaid. Can be read as a stand alone.

Captain James Hook is looking to revenge the death of his son. Tinker Bell becomes his fairy friend while Red becomes his wolf buddy. Peter needs to taken care of, but will a mermaid change his mind. The quote I chose for James is: “I don’t need to trust them. I just need the dust. I believe any fairy would happily exchange some dust for its freedom.”

Elynna is a mermaid in Neverland. When she meets James she soon learns that he wants to do something horrible. When she learns the story she decides that she's going to take into her own hands. The quote I chose for Elynna: “This is not the way to honor Owen. Be the man he was proud of.”

Highly recommended for YA Fantasy lovers.

Hook’s Little Mermaid is the first instalment in The Untold Stories series by Suzanna Lynn. This is a wonderful young adult fantasy and is a mash-up of several classic fairytales, giving us a different perspective on a story(stories) we all know so well. With Captain Hook, Peter Pan, The Lost Boys, Tinkerbell, Mermaids, Red Riding Hood, drama, magic, revenge, history….. and so much more, everything comes together into a truly captivating story.
I really enjoyed this clever mash-up- as Peter Pan has always been a favourite of mine. This had an extra element of interest for me though, because we get Hook’s perspective of things- giving us the backstory and motivation behind Hook’s vendetta on Pan.
So, if you like clever and well-woven retellings of classic fairytales, are intrigued by Captain Hook and how he came to be like he is- then this is definitely a book you won’t want to miss.
Happy Reading!

Thank you, Suzanna Lynn!

I had not read a book by this author prior to reading this book. I have always loved the stories of Peter Pan & The Little Mermaid, so I was intrigued by the title of this. I was surprised to realize that this is a new twist on Captain Hook and his story. And I LOVED IT! I truly had a new outlook on the villain of Peter Pan and could really start to sympathize and understand why Hook was as evil as he was. I was very impressed with this book and found it to be a very fast read. In fact, I read the entire book in less than 24 hours because I was reading it so quickly. I was quite shocked with the writing and the characters. I was expecting the Captain Hook I have grown used to but was surprised to find out that wasn’t the case at all. I believe that this story is geared towards young adult readers but thought that the author did a fabulous job immersing me into their world. The characters resonated with me and I was able to visually see and feel the images around me. I can honestly say that I felt as though I were an actress in this movie. I didn’t want it to end. If you are a fan of Disney then I believe that you will love this book. I am excited to read the next installment in Lynn’s series.

Hook’s Little Mermaid (The Untold Stories BOOK 1) by Suzanna Lynn was full of fiction and adventure. It is a retelling of Captain Hook and his chase of Peter Pan from his point of view.

Captain James Hook used to be a decent guy struggling to make a decent living; he is a pirate. Hook makes it his sole mission to track down and kill the fiend after learning that a boy named Peter Pan played a part in the death of a dear loved one. The captain meets several new allies on his quest for revenge, including a young girl named Red and a fairy named Tinker Bell, all of whom encourage him to rethink his thirst for justice. He goes on a whirlwind journey in Neverland after accidentally rescuing a mermaid. Hook must choose between the chance of a new life with love and his much-desired revenge against Pan after a series of misadventures.

This was a lovely retelling, and I loved every page of it. This is book one, and I would love to read more of this collection.

If you have ever watched the show “Once Upon a Time”, and liked/loved it, then you will enjoy this series. This was an imaginative blend of fairy tales mashed together with its own original voice. As the title implies, the focus is on Captain Hook, from Peter Pan fame, as he reveals his untold story. The story draws you in as though you are catching up with an old friend, reliving the glory days and adventures you might have known about and divulging secrets that you probably didn’t. Surprising backgrounds, unexpected connections, and old wives’ tales abound as you get to know the characters. Additionally, as the tile suggests this story is more than just about Hook; the story of the Little Mermaid is also entangled in the mash-up quite seamlessly. While the names are not quite the same, there are both familiar aspects to the story and others that are unique. Overall, this is the start of a promising fairy tale retelling series that has interesting, well developed characters, storylines that continually cross over and blend naturally, and keep you “hooked”.
