The Untold Stories

Red's Tangled Tale

Rate this book
Everyone knows the story of Little Red Riding Hood. Well, at least they think they do. History would have many believe Red was a naïve little girl who brought treats to her grandmother in the dark of the forest. History had it wrong.

After the curse of the wolves came to Timbergard, Red's father was the only soul brave enough to enter Blakx Forest. However, when the wolves claimed his life, his young daughter took up his bow and began hunting the beasts to fill her need for revenge.

When Captain Hook shows up in the village in search of the rare burning ash that lies on the far borders of the cursed forest, Red agrees to help get him safely through the dangerous land.

The trek through the forest becomes precarious when the group is cornered by a pack of wolves. Red is forced to make a decision that will alter the lives of everyone, including individuals she has yet to meet.

I am a huge fan of retold and modern retellings of fairy tales, and I jumped at the chance to review Suzanna Lynn’s “Red’s Tangled Tale”. This is the second novel in “The Untold Stories” series, and it focuses on Red Riding Hood.

After the death of her father, Red is living in the cursed woods with her granny. When Captain Hook pays a visit to her town, Red agrees to help Hook and his band of pirates find magic ash that will help free Hook’s love, who has been captured by a cruel Sea Witch. Facing deadly and dangerous wolves is just the first challenge of her journey. On her return, Red meets a young woman trapped in a tower, and after befriending her, she agrees to help young Rapunzel retake her Crown and title- as Princess Ozma, Princess of Oz.

Lynn’s YA fairy tale retelling is really reminiscent of “Once Upon A Time”, the wonderful ABC television show from a few years back, where many fairy tale creatures come to life. I love knowing the back stories of beloved fairy tale creatures, and imagining what their lives would be like. Lynn helps me complete this task with her new series.

Although I did not read the first novel in the series, I was still able to follow along with the plot. As the characters are already acquainted with any of us who has read a Grimm’s fairy tale, or seen a Disney movie, there is not a lot of familiarization that needs to be done with any of the characters. In Lynn’s novel, Red is spunky, brave and confident and I rooted for her from page one. She is the ideal female heroine and protagonist.

As this is a series, obviously some pertinent plot points are left for future novels, but enough of the story was resolved that I felt satisfaction at the novel’s conclusion. I appreciate being given the oppourtunity to read this novel, and I look forward to reading more of Lynn’s past (and future) work.

"Red's Tangled Tale" (Book #2 of "The Untold Stories" series) by Suzanna Lynn is a new look at the old tale of "Red Riding Hood," and flips the fairy tale on its ear. "Red" is NOT a victim of the Big Bad Wolf in this tale; she is a strong, fierce heroine who helps feed her local village by entering the spooky Blakx Forest and hunting, including killing any of the ginormous wolves that inhabit the Forest, one of whom killed her father.
"Red's" friend, Captain Jameson Shaw - aka "Captain Hook" - arrives in her village, apparently on a mission to find any aid possible in rescuing his friend, the Little Mermaid, from an evil witch, apparently a sister of King Neptune? He needs some ever-burning ash from the Blakx Forest - the very quest in which Red's father died. Red leads Hook and some of his pirate companions into the Forest, but what does she find there? Do they succeed in their quest? What else does Red find in the Forest besides the "ash?" Is the white wolf more than it seems? I'd love to tell you, because I LOVED the addition of other fairy tale folks into the mix, but that would spoil a surprising twist in the tale, and I don't want to include any spoilers.
Again, I loved the re-framing of the old fairy tale. I loved that Red was a strong heroine and that a pirate needed HER help, instead of HIS rescuing HER.
There were a couple of things I didn't "love:" This book can definitely be read as a stand-alone, but I feel I would have understood more of the story if I had read Book #1 first, as it addresses how the Little Mermaid was captured. I also didn't love the overuse of the verb "hissed." Red and Captain Hook "hissed" a lot of their dialogue to one another, and in a couple of spots it was just glaringly misused. So since I liked the book a LOT, I'll give it 4.4 stars, which unfortunately rounds down to 4.

This was a great follow-up to Hook's Little Mermaid! The story centers mainly around Rose, a Little Red Riding Hood character, but not the meek little girl who carries goodies to grandma's house. Captain Jameson Shaw "Hook" also has a fairly large presence in this book, and Rose sets out to help him with a mission. They have to go through Blakx Forest, where deadly wolves live but luckily only come out at night. One night a chain of events leads Rose to a stone tower in the forest, where she meets a very friendly and childlike girl with whom she becomes good friends. There are some subtle (and some less subtle) hints of other fairytale characters, some of which will probably come into play later in the series, so I'm excited to see what happens in the future. The series is clean--I think any age reader would enjoy it--and the books are a nice shorter length, so be sure to read them in order so you don't miss anything.

This was an enjoyable second tale in the Untold Stories series. The author has some interesting twists on the Red Riding Hood story, and I loved how Hook's story continues to intertwine with Red's.

I also loved how the title so subtly hints at the second fairy tale that happens in this book that I didn't catch it until that fairy tale started to unfold. So cool at the author interweaves the fairy tales together.

I listened to the audiobook version, and the narrator does a good job, especially for a male narrator doing a book with a female perspective. I'm so glad the author kept the same narrator from the first book.

The only things I didn't like about this book is that it felt too short. In some ways, the ending really felt like it should've have been a major plot point in a longer book. The action was finally getting going. But I guess that just means I can't wait for the next book.

Warnings: this book does have some mild language.

Oh what an enjoyable clean teen read! I loved this authors version of little red riding hood! I really enjoyed all the fairytale characters who made an appearance in this story! I'm always excited to learn where the titles comes from in each story and this one did not disappoint! Suzanna Lynn put a unique twist on this story and I had fun reading it! I don't really have anything negative to say! The dialogue and spunkyness of the main character was wonderful, the pace of the story didn't leave me bored and I was pleasantly surprised to learn Captain Hook was in a good chuck of this book! I can't wait for a book 3!

Brilliant follow up to Hook's Little Mermaid. Red's tale rejoins us with old friends and introduces us to new while setting up many more stories to come complete with a glimpse at yet another antagonist.
The book is a quick read, perfect for a lazy day, and brings the nostalgia of childhood to us with unique twists. Fans of re-imagined fairy tales spun together (such as The Lunar Chronicles) will enjoy The Untold Stories immensely.

I had the opportunity to receive an ARC copy of Red’s Tangled Tale and am leaving an honest review. This story dives into Red Riding Hood’s untold perspective and adds depth to a classic tale I’ve loved since childhood. I really enjoyed how it brought in characters from the first book, Hook’s Little Mermaid, as well as other fairy tales—my inner child is so happy! Suzanna Lynn’s writing style is charming, clever, and engaging, full of twists, magic, and surprises that kept me hooked from start to finish.

At just under 200 pages, this novella-length story is perfect for readers 12 and up, though I enjoyed it just as much as an adult. Suzanna Lynn does an amazing job weaving familiar characters into fresh, imaginative storylines that feel both nostalgic and new. Can’t wait for the next installment!

Suzanna Lynn is the author of the Untold Stories series and Red's Tangled Tale: Captain Hook and Red Riding Hood discover the Big Bad Wolf, and Rapunzel too! Is the second book in the series. The books are YA fantasy stories and Suzanna’s unique and original take on historically loved characters and their adventures. Suzanna’s narrative is fairy tale meets fantasy that is enjoyable and exciting. Red Riding Hood, Captain Hook and the gang will never look the same again. Discovering Suzanna’s world all by yourself and without giving anything away is half the fun the other half is this fun tale. If you like Once Upon a Time you will like this series

Little Red Riding Hood is the little girl who skips through the woods to visit her grandmother and bring her treats, but who is also scared of the Big Bad Wolf, but this is not necessarily true, she actually lives with her grandmother and Red is the name the villagers who who shun her have given her because of her red cloak she wears and she isn’t scared of the Big Bad Wolf, she hunts him.

Red lives in Ravenmore in an area known as Timbergard by the Blakx forest where huge wolves prowl on a night, it is said to have been cursed by a sorceress and cut off from the rest of the kingdom by another who used a fire to burn a border, which it is said to be still burning, but out of all who live there, only Red’s father was brave enough to go hunting in those woods, now it is up to Red to do since he was killed by the wolves a year before. When Red kills a wolf the merchants are always trying to short change her from everything from the meat to the pelt, despite the fact that they would be cold and starving if she didn’t hunt, but when she brings the latest prepared kill, an old friend, Captain Hook helps her out with the pelt, but he has changed and Red is determined to find out why. After Hook tells Red his tale, she agrees to help him to through the forest and collect some of the ash he needs from the border, so they prepare what they need, albeit the pirates think that Red is just a girl, the Captain soon puts them right and they agree that they will meet at Red’s grandmother's house and set off at first light the next day

As Red and the pirates set off, much to the dismay of her grandmother, Red explains that she will lead the way and that they must listen to her, but the pirates aren’t used to long treks in the forest and after a few hours, they stop to eat, drink and rest, this is were one of the pirates sees his first wolf print and the size of it scares him. Later on, as it starts to get dark, Red insists that they find somewhere to camp for the night, the best place she finds is a cave at the source of the river, it means they have to wade through the cold water to it, but it will be safe and somewhere they can light a fire to dry off. The next day the pirates start to complain about being tired and hungry, so they rest before they get the ash, however, because of this, they are still a ways away from the cave when night starts to fall and the wolves start to hunt them, so Red has to make a drastic decision and she decides to run and lead the wolves away from the pirates. As she does it, she falls down a hill and when she gets to the bottom, she sees a white wolf chasing her, it reminds her of the one who chased her out of the woods the night of her father’s death, but soon she sees a place ahead of her which is far from ordinary, but it is something which could save her life.

Will Red be able to lead the wolves away from the pirates and will this mysterious place be the saving grace she hopes it is, or will there be something inside which could spell the end of her existence? This is a story of secrets, revelations, bravery and magic, it is another untold story which will change your view of Red and fairy tales in general while leaving you wanting more.

I cannot say this enough Lynn is amazing!! Seriously, I was impressed by the first book, taking a well-known tale and putting its own interesting and intriguing spin on it, but this one just went above and beyond. Red riding hood is a well-known tale, and there was a period where the story was sort of played around with a bit. What I remember of these attempts was that they were okay, but they just didn’t do much. Lynn is ambitious and creative with the way she takes the classics that we know and love and weaves a more nuanced and mature tale, that blurs the line of good and bad, and reveals the human nature in all the characters.
Red has always been a badass really, even in the original tale she still showed either pure idiocy or bravery that is very rare. In this she is a hunter, seeking out those that killed her father. When Captain Hook shows up – somehow now my favorite character, years of childish hatred be damned – she decides to help him locate the rare burning ash in the Blakx Forest. The same forest where her father died and where pretty everyone in her village is afraid to go, for good reason mind because that is where the wolves like to hang out, and it turns out they aren’t very friendly.
This is a great adventure story, and even without its ties to the classic tales that everyone knows and loves, it is fantastic. The characters are so changed and explored so much more deeply that they feel new and refreshing, and you honestly can’t help but love them. I have the next book in the series lined up and ready to read, because I honestly cannot get enough of Lynn’s storytelling.

Red, as in Little Red Riding Hood, aka Rosalee, was first introduced in Hook’s Little Mermaid. This untold story mixes Red’s with Rapunzel’s. The author does a great job of adding on to what we know and love about these favorite fairy tales and expanding on them to breathe in new life and surprises. One of the things that continues to amaze me is how these tales are being connected, particularly to a story that isn’t usually associated with fairy tales (sorry, no spoilers but it’s a fantastic connection!). Hook returns in this story as a means of revealing Red’s background and character as well as the discovery of Rapunzel. The secondary characters are interesting and give the story more credibility as what you would think of as a small town that’s been forgotten by its kingdom. While Red’s character is resilient and adventurous, Rapunzel is nearly the opposite. The fairy tale mashup is cleverly done and the allusions to upcoming characters and worlds as Red and Rapunzel continue their journey are exciting. I can’t wait to see how things play out. Suzanna Lynn is a new author to me, having only read the books in The Untold Series thus far. However, I will be following her and this series.

We are introduced to the character of Red in The Hook’s Little Mermaid. The character of Red comes off as a brave girl, who has just lost her father . She develops a deep bond with Hook in a brief time.
In this book, we get to know more about Red ,her encounter with Hook and their journey together into the forest. Red is a fearless girl, who dons a red cloak .She is a hunter who goes into the deep forest to find fur and ash, and trades them to the bartenders and the pirates to get a good price, to feed her family. Red is determined to hunt down her father’s killer , whom the wolves took out. Captain Hook is in search of the Ash, to battle the kraken in the deep seas. Together they journey into the forest and the fairy tale takes a twist such that another fairy tale is introduced in the story. Rapunzel is introduced and their quest together is exciting.
Suzanne Lynn has a good knack of creating this fairy tale mashups, each children’s classic blended with another and a fresh perspective given to the characters we have doted since childhood. I have enjoyed reading this Untold Series so far and hope to see more such books in the future.

Red’s tangled tale (The Untold Stories Book 2) by Suzanna Lynn is a story full of fiction and adventure. It is a retelling of red riding hood and the big bad wolf. This is an interesting take of showing the red riding hood’s real colors.

Only the little girl who hunts him is more terrifying than the Big Bad Wolf. The story of Little Red Riding Hood is well-known. At least, that's what they believe. Many people think Red was a cute little girl who carried candy to her grandmother in the woods at night. History was incorrect. Red's father was the only person brave enough to join Blakx Forest after the wolves' curse struck Timbergard. When his father was killed by wolves, his young daughter took up his bow and started killing the beasts to fulfill her need for vengeance. When a pack of wolves corners the party, the journey through the forest becomes perilous. Red is forced to choose that will affect everyone's lives, including those she has yet to meet.

This was a lovely retelling. You get to see a side of character you never imagined before, and I loved every page of it. This is book two, and I would love to read more of this collection.

I loved this audiobook. The narrator did a fabulous job with the voices and making the story come to life. Red isn't the simple girl we've been told, but a fierce huntress who braves the woods on her own when no one else will. James (captain Hook) comes back to her cursed land to ask her help to free someone the witch took to Oz.

I loved how the author wove in so many of our childhood characters. My son (10 year old) listened to the book with me and enjoyed it just as much as I did. James' change from when Red met him first to now is frustrating but she is going to help her friend anyway. Her grandmother may have been my favorite character!

Great job by this author 5/5!

Thank you to the author for the copy of this book. I received this audiobook in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.

I just got around to reading this book after finishing Hook’s Little Mermaid earlier this month. And I must say that this was a great follow-up story in the series. I am a huge fan of fairy-tales and this was no exception. The way that the author mixes different fairy-tale characters within one another is phenomenal. She takes these characters that we already know and love so well and makes them into the heroes that we know they are just didn’t have the rest of the story to go with them. She also may or may not foretell of some characters for the future books, but she will keep you engaged and guessing. And trust me, you will love the way she weaves the stories and characters together. I will say that if you haven’t read the previous book then you may have some issues with the story so keep that in mind if you decide to read just this story.

Red's Tangled Tale: Captain Hook and Red Riding Hood discover the Big Bad Wolf, and Rapunzel too! (The Untold Stories #2) by Suzanna Lynn

This isn't the first book I've read by the author. It won't be my last as I've fallen for this series. Lynn knows how to turn our normal fairytales into another world.

Little Red Riding Hood has a name and it's not Red. Her name is Rose and she isn't out hunting just one wolf. She's hunting wolves as in more than one because they killed her family. She runs into James again although this time he's got a hook for a hand. Join them on they're journeys. The quote I chose for Rose is: “Yes, you are a good man, James. You’re a good man who did some very foolish things and was manipulated by an evil witch. One act of idiocy doesn’t set you for life as an evil man.”

Highly recommended for YA Fantasy lovers.

Suzanna Lynn has done it again the second installment to this series Red's Tangled Tale had this reader glued to her seat and wanting more.  The first installment Hook's Little Mermaid left me instantly looking for the second installment and I wasn't disappointed. We are first introduced to Red in Hook's Little Mermaid, but Red's Tangled Tale delves deep into Red's life, where we learn vital details of what makes Red tick. Once again Suzanna Lynn gives us great character development, a painted picture in her scenery descriptions, and more action. Red's Tangled Tale is full of everything that a fantasy reader could ask for including pirates, wolves, a troubled town and a cursed forest, and several other fascinating twists and turns. If your looking for a great fantasy series then I highly recommend this series and specifically Red's Tangled Tale by miss Suzanna Lynn.

I loved this book as much as the first! It's written in the same style as the first book and focuses on the story of Red while simultaneously continuing Hook's storyline. You're also briefly introduced to several new characters that will play bigger role in the next installment. This story had more of a cliffhanger for me but does give some hints as to the who and where of the next book. The biggest thing that stood out to me (even two weeks post-read) is the kickbutt, adventurous, and protective female lead, Red. I really enjoyed having a strong female character who sticks to her principles and doesn't become a whiny, guy-obsessed, self-pitying annoyance. I can't wait to see how everyone's stories will interconnect and definitely recommend this book.

Red’s Tangled Tales is the second book in The Untold Stories series by Suzanna Lynn. As with the first book, this is a wonderful young adult fantasy and is a mash-up of several classic fairytales, giving us a different version of the stories we all thought we knew so well. With Red Riding Hood taking the spotlight in this story, we also get more of Captain Hook, who we followed in the first book- as we are thrust on an adventure filled with magic, drama, wolves, friendship, action….. and more.
I love all the intricate, clever, interconnected details that really bring the story/series to life. Taking our favourite classics and giving them a new and highly original spin. I can’t wait to see where we go from here.
Happy Reading!

Thank you, Suzanna Lynn!

Red’s Tangled Tale by Suzanna Lynn is the retelling of the Little Red Riding Hood and is the second book in The Untold Stories series. I really like how the author had us meet Red, or Rosalee, back in the first book and how Red interacted with Captain Hook. We meet up with Captain Hook in this second book when Red offers to help him search for ash that he needs to help a friend who is being held captive by a wicked witch in the land of Oz (I seriously love all these characters crossing into each other’s stories!). The search for the ash is a dangerous one but Red is the best hunter in the village and happens to have helped her father gather ash even though it was a tragic moment in her life. Enjoy reading the tale! I’m looking forward to the next book in the series!

Red’s Tangled Tale: Captain Hook and Red Riding Hood discover the Big Bad Wolf, and Rapunzel to! By Suzanne Lynn is the second book in the Untold Stories series. This is another unique and interesting twist on some classic tales. I thought this book was even better than the first and I loved getting back into the character of Captain Hook. His journey is taking him through new lands where he meets some new characters - Red being the one we really get to know. I thought the whole story was well written and really added to the series as a whole. It is hard to add such an original twist on such well known stories and yet this author has managed to go just that. I am looking forward to seeing what is to come next.

This is the second  book in The Untold Stories Series. I really enjoyed this book. It was definately not what I expected which was great. Some retelling of old tales can become a bit boring as authors try not to stray to far from the original. However this one blows the original story and the the thought you have about Red Riding Hood to bits.

In this story Red is a strong young woman looking for revenge against the wolves that killed her father. She is strong willed and determined. When an old friend James Hook returns with a mission Red jumps at the chance to help him. Joining Hook on his mission leads Red down  a path she never would have dreamed of and introduces more characters we know and love.

A short story of Red Riding Hood, the Hunter

This is a short, fun fairytale retelling of Red Riding Hood. What I liked: the main character, Red. She is tough and resourceful without being obnoxious or arrogant. And she’s a great shot with a bow and arrow😉. I also liked the action scenes and the descriptions of the forest.
What I didn’t like: I thought this was a stand alone, but it’s not. It’s one of a series of fairytale retellings, and the story felt a bit choppy because of that, to me. I didn’t care for the secondary characters of Rapunzel and Gothel, although Red’s grandmother and the townspeople felt very real to me.

I enjoyed this young adult fantasy story. This is the second book in this series which I would highly suggest reading the first one as it is just as enjoyable. This is a series that takes childhood stories to another level. It is well developed and full of adventure. The characters took me on an adventure and made me feel part of it. They are connectable and kept the story engaging. In this story Red Riding Hood goes hunting for the Big Bad Wolf. Then you add Captain Hook to the plot and they will keep you reading to the end. This is a great story for any young adult. I highly recommend it.

This is the second Book in Suzanna Lynn's series. Let me just say I love this book! The way she weaves her storyline and the richness of the characters just gets better with each turn of the page. In the first book we saw a glimpse of captain Jameson Shaw (later captain James hook) make a friend in Red riding hood. In this book we see that it was not a chance encounter but an alliance in the making. We are getting closer to the all powerful villains but will they be able to trust and get there in time? Read and find out! you will be on the edge of your set and reaching for the next book in no time.

Absolutely great! This adventure is a combination of fairytales from Red Riding Hoods' perspective. She is definitely not the damsel in distress in this story. You will again meet up with Red's friend Captain James Hook, as they set off on an adventure together, trying to get Hook closer to his ultimate mission. You will run into Rapunzel in this story as Red accidentally stumbles upon her running from wolves. It is great watching their friendship develop & seeing how so many fairytale characters' lives are intertwined by destiny and how they weave in and out of each other's lives. I can't wait to see where these adventures take us in the upcoming books.
