Will Roc and Leah fall prey to the forces that oppress them or will they find the freedom to love?
Roc was free at last to live his life. The story opened with him going to prison. I thought for sure that would be short-lived. It was not the case. After several years and a second chance, who would imagine a six degrees situation would have a positive effect on Roc's life. His meeting Leah was sweet. Parts of the back story had me upset, and April knew... That's all ill say about that. The complexity of the story kept me turning pages. 4.5 stars.
Miss Wilson! I was very much in my feelings for this entire read! The storyline was so relevant, and felt incredibly real! My entire being cried out for Roc, and you could sense his vulnerability and disbelief of what was happening to him! However, upon his release he walked out with his head held high, ready to live on his own terms. I really was waiting to get more of a backstory, as to what happened and why Jessica did this. Roc's sister April, I was kinda giving the side eye. She was so pushy, to point of almost being mean. The man just got out, and she was doing the most! Leah, really had a heart of gold! The passion that she had for helping those get reacclimated to society was admirable. Her parents were just beyond disgusting! Their only child and they had no good words for her, and the work she was doing. When Leah and Roc met, I could almost feel the crackle of attraction. They tried to keep it professional, but it was meant to happen. The way the just "got" each other, and had a deep understanding of how the other felt was beautiful! Really Shonda? I wonder about that friendship, as they seemed to be polar opposites in all areas of life. The best read from you yet! 👍👍👍
Ms. Wilson, I enjoyed Roc and Leah journey. It was quite liberating how Leah helped Roc get back accommodated in society. It was also great they fell for each other while doing it. I loved the story line and character development. The only characters that was a little shady to me was the best friend (Shonda) and Loran. I would love to read April's story. I believe there is someone that is her true happily ever after.
A magnificent read and I most definitely recommend it. You will not be disappointed it will have you intrigued from the prologue.
I really really liked how the author touched on an issue that is a real problem in today’s American justice system. We see how, people, more times than not, black men, go to prison for crimes they did not commit. We often see these stories on tv, and we see the celebration of these men’s exoneration, but what happens after? Are these people ever able to transition back into society? How does the incarceration and the fight for freedom affect their family members. I loved that the author touched on all these points in this story. We see, through Roc, that though one may be physically free, they can still be mentally imprisoned and programs like Leah’s that help them in understanding and navigating the real world are so very important to help these men during their reintegration into society.
In addition, I found Roc and Leah to be quite likable. They meshed well and the beginning stage of their relationship, where they were just friends, was really fun. They had great banter and really encouraged each other (Leah reassuring Roc about his progress and encouraging him to be patient (I loved their scene in the park looking at the stars) and Roc making sure to lift up Leah, always telling her she is beautiful and doing a good job).
Overall, this was a good read and I would recommend it if you need a quick spicy romance (a little over 100 pages) that is fast-paced, with likeable main characters and an overall good plot.

I do wish there was a bit more development of Roc and Leah’s relationship. Though their chemistry was believable and fiery, I just wish there was a bit more angst and/or yearning and more of a forbidden romance as it relates to the FMC and MMC. I say this because, when we think of it, the FMC is kind of in a place of authority (she is supposed to be his teacher and helping him in reintegrating into the outside world) so I wish both parties had a bit more internal dialogue about whether or not this relationship was what was best for them at the time. They moved pretty fast from the meeting each other phase to the love phase.
Also, I was a bit confused about why Roc didn’t really go try to have a relationship with his son sooner. At 62% into the story, we are still wondering why Roc hasn’t even contacted his son yet. This is a child you have not seen in 14 years. I understand making sure you are somewhat stable before going in fully, but there was no real conversation about the son…it was a little weird.
As it relates to the secondary plot points (re. April, Laron, Shonda, Leah’s relationship with her parents), there seemed to be the skeleton of a few storylines that promised to be really juicy, and drama filled but they never really paid off and were at times confusing. I wish there was more time spent on the development of Roc and Leah’s relationship instead.

🅵🅰🆅🅾🆁🅸🆃🅴 🆀🆄🅾🆃🅴🆂/🆂🅰🆈🅸🅽🅶🆂 “When my lips met hers, something burst inside of my chest. I didn’t know if something was coming together or falling apart, but I didn’t care. I just knew I needed this.”
I was really enjoying this great romance about a reintegration officer from a privileged background, Leah, and her newly exonerated client who has been released after 14years of wrongful imprisonment, Roc. In that sense, it is sort of a forbidden romance although that angle isn’t much explored. What is really well-done is how this book tackles the experience and the emotions of someone who has been in prison and is newly-released. It is sensitive and tries to cover the complexities of reintegrating back into the outside world after a long time in prison. These complexities are even more amplified after an exoneration stemming from wrongful imprisonment. Though not done as comprehensive as I think it could have been even within the context of this romance, this attempted to cover some discourse about the prison pipeline system and the impact on families and even the difficulties of imprisonment as a form of rehabilitation when formerly convicted people struggle to catch a break when they’re out.
This book introduced a lot of family drama for both Roc and Leah that was potentially interesting, but then it didn’t quite follow those juicy breadcrumbs it laid out. If anything at the climax of the book, it sort of ends and then we get an epilogue explaining everything is now fine. I would have loved to see some of those solutions being won. All the conflicts that were set up like with Leah and the ethics of becoming involved with a client never came into fruition, we never understood what happened with her father when she chose Roc, we don’t know what happened with Roc’s sister and husband per se. All the potentially juicy it’s are just summarized in epilogue at the end - and don’t get me wrong, it is a nice epilogue, but it is also just a chapter to summarize all the drama the author built.
Anthony Roc Carmichael never gave up on being released for a crime he didn’t commit. When the word “exonerated” was given to him, he gripped the bull by the horns determined to take full advantage of his new lease on life. With over a decade of his life handed over to the system, he hits the ground running to be the man and have the life that he always wanted. What wasn’t on his bucket list was love. That was until he met transition specialist, Leah Brighton. He knew almost immediately that his plans had to change to include the woman who captured his heart, and understood his soul. Leah fell too, but she has a past that keeps her shackled from embracing what she feels until neither of them can deny it.
What I love is the exploration of life and love after such a traumatic experience, and what the reemergence into society looks and feels like. I love that it didn’t flow with the general opinion of how society believes former prisoners act and think. Roc was a man, broken in areas, but not defeated. Leah, who seemingly had everything together, found the missing pieces to some of her brokenness through her love of Roc. They are the highly unlikely pair that are just right for each other. But Leah’s “bestie” Shonda, her so-called father, and LaRon can get a first class ticket to the bottom of the Bermuda Triangle, and then dig deeper and plunge further. That’s putting it mildly. Despite those parasites, this book is all about love and redemption and you can feel free to fall in love with Roc and Leah.
Queen A.S definitely gave us a really good real life yet fiction short. Roc's story was like a lot of black men in America, young black man falls victim to the system after being falsely accused of a crime he insist he didn't commit. He spent a decade and then some away from him mom, family and missed out on so many first in his sons life. Now out he's referred to a rehab center that assist men and women who are trying to reestablish themselves back into society. There he meets and falls for the beautiful Leah Brighton. After coming up with a program for men like him who's been released after being exonerated. Leah resisted him and played hard to get for as long as she could. After some time Roc finds out Leah is the daughter of the DA who put him away. On to of that he has his bm who's very angry and somewhat bitter because he's out but is only interested in trying to build a relationship with his son. I felt bad for Leah cause after choosing to be with Roc, instead of her dad admitting his wrong doing and make amends he disowned her and forbid the wife to see her as well😢😡. Roc was so dedicated to keeping her happy, I cried when he not only arranged a pregnancy massage but had her mom surprise her😭🤗. Despite all the negativity and nay sayers they persevered and got their HEA💕.
Not bad but at times felt rushed while missing something!
First time reading this author and it wasn’t too bad but at times it felt as if the story was being rushed while missing something. Leah was this supposed rich entitled lady who grew up with a sliver spoon in her mouth but never took anything for granted. Roc was given a huge bad hand as a matter of fact his whole deck of cards was dealt wrong at a young age where it took 15 years of his life to rectify, but several tragedy had struck in the course of these years. These two collude and thus the story begins with several incidents triggering unpleasant memories for both parties in their lives. What’s missing is: 1) the full background of how this friendship started with the two ladies where one is jealous of the other but they call each other BFF, 2) a little background as to the sister’s matrimonial relationship and turn of events, and 3) a little bit more background into the parents and the community center’s deal? Besides that it was a good second chances and finding true love type of story!
Roc was wrongly convicted for a crime he didn't commit and served a 14 year sentence. Coming home from his conviction being overturned, Roc was lost and didn't know what to do. With the advice of his sister, he went to a center for assistance and met Leah. He had feelings for Leah from the beginning, but Leah didn't want to mix business with pleasure. The more time Leah and Rochelle spent with each other, the more their feelings grew. When Leah was upset after dinner with her parents, she called Roc and he was there for her. This story was a slow burn and everything that played out in this story showed me the type of man Roc was before he went to jail and after. I loved how he felt responsible for people in his life and being accountable for his actions hurting them. I wanted more of Leah and Roc and was rooting for them!!! As always AS Wilson weaves a great story!!
The Good. The plot idea started off strong. A black man convicted of a crime he didn't commit. The opening scene in the court was good. The relationship that happened between Roc & Leah is plausible. But then the bad happened. Word choice threw me off a few times. They stuck out like a thorn. It wouldn't be inner thoughts nor true conversation of your characters using big words in the story. It was like...why did she use that word? It didn't flow. The parts not clear. The classes, the progression feeling for one another weren't developed, and a ton of unanswered questions because the plot was mishandled and the story went all over the place. Then I was confused about Darius popping up, when he was unexplained as a factor. He wasn't even I. The picture only an ex she thought of because of the relationship she was in that was different. The book has potential but the flow of information needs to be revamped.
I enjoyed the story but there were things I wish were explored more. I felt like important things were introduced, then glossed over; for instance, what Roc saw that he had to tell his sister, the best friend and Laron, starting a relationship with Brandon and the progress, what happened to Leah was major and his behavior triggered her yet I don’t remember there being a conversation about it, the threat from his son’s mom was pretty major but after it was mentioned it was resolved in 1 sentence. Even the complicated relationship with Leahs parents weren’t furthered explored. When did they even find out she was in a relationship and whatever happened to her boos Mark? I think too many things were going on for the author to go in-depth about. Better to focus on just 2 or three thing than to leave so many balls spinning in the air.
Roc is free after spending over a decade in prison for a crime he didn't commit. He meets Leah through a community program where she works helping ex -cons readapt to the world around them.
Both were dealing with issues from their past. Their journey to love wasn't easy but definitely worth it.
A. S. Wilson, tackled a subject that's all too real in the justice systems in America. Bravo!
You did it again, with your amazing writing skills. Leah was great at the job she held, but she had baggage.
Roc was a young man when he was sent to prison and she he was exonerated of those charges, he still had to build a life for himself. With Leah, he could do that.
April was a great sister, a bit demanding, but she was a good person. I hate Laron was cheating on her with that ghetto/Boujee sank, who had issues of her own.
I couldn't believe, Quita wanted Roc to give her half of the restitution he may receive, I don't care, if she had his son.
I enjoyed this story overall. The beginning took a minute to get through due to the difficult subject, but it was done well. The issues Roc faced were very much in line with reality and Leah was perfect to help him on his journey. I did feel towards the end, a part of the storyline messed up the flow of the story for me and felt like a plot twist gone wrong. All in all, however, I’d still recommend the book.
Goodness! I loved everything about Roc! He was such a good man, from the start to the finish, he deserved all of Leah and the sweet love she gave him. This was such a great love story! Full of forgiveness, redemption and happiness. I really didn't care for Shonda, regardless of what she went through. And I'm glad April moved on and moved forward. This book was amazing, so well written!
This story touched on many topics while also focusing on a budding love story. My heart went out to Roc. He went through something that would have broken many. I loved his determination to make the most of the time he has left now that he was free. I will say that I felt like Shonda was a hater low key. Who needs enemies with friends like that. This story was uplifting on top of being a love story too.
The justice system did Roc wrong but he was determined not to let it destroy his good characteristics. Leah wants nothing more than to make sure she doesn't end up like her mother, with no voice in her relationship. The chemistry is obvious for the two of them at their first meeting. Roc's baby mama made me wanna hurt her 🙄 I love how April rides for her little brother Roc and Leron😑 he tricked me
I loved Roc and Leah's story. This was a wonderful story line filled with enough tender moments to block out Rocs predicament. I felt the love between the couple and I was rooting for them the whole time. I'm glad Roc was compensated and got his second chance at life and a happily ever after. I would have loved to read more about the relationship with Roc and his son as well as Leah and her dad. I think April needs a book! Overall great refreshing read!
I felt so bad for Roc but I loved and respected the fact that he wasn’t harboring anger and resentment. He wasn’t trying to dwell on his past but rather make his future better. I enjoyed Leah and Roc. I will say that Sharonda and James were very confusing to me. Their overall presence in the story felt misplaced. At some points she didn’t come off as a genuine friend.
What a journey Roc had. Unfortunately it was one that some black men have had to travel and it sucked😔. So glad he was released and met Leah💃🏽💃🏽👏🏽👏🏽. This was such a well written book. I enjoyed the relationship between these two. I’m glad Roc was able to have a relationship with Brandon. So glad him and Leah got their HEA💃🏽💃🏽. Loved it and I recommend it👏🏽👏🏽🔥🔥
Roc and Leah meet in an unusual way. Roc was resilient and persisted through a tome most men would have been broken completely from. I did not like Leah's dad at all, but I was hoping for a change of heart. Leah's mom allowed far too much to go on. I want to see Naja HEA though. Good story
I loved this story! Thank you to the author for not only gifting me this book but also for writing an amazing story that some know too well. It was nice to read about the struggle that so many black men endure and to see the positive outcome it had on Roc’s life. Great read!
I will start by saying this story resonated with me on a personal level. I was rooting for Roc and Leah the entire time while reading. The flow of the book was very smooth and I loved the instant chemistry between them. This story shows that no matter what life throws at you, you can always rise above it!
i mean the story was good but i didn’t like Shonda too much especially because of the end , she was sleeping with a married man and married a gay man with very weak excuses. she was weird. i’m happy april divorced laron weak self. leah was okay , i loved roc though! he was the only character i truly enjoyed.
Loved Roc and Leah’s story and the theme of second chances for both. Beautifully done. Was glad to see Roc get a chance to build with his son. I knew something was up with Laron and was disappointed to see how that played out (we were all rooting for you!) LOL
I enjoyed this one. My first read from this author and she did not disappoint. She exposes the reader to the quarrels of the justice system and how men and women everyday have to overcome so much after being released from prison. And it was all done in the form of a beautiful love story. This is a multilayered work of art
This was so sad that this young man was wrongfully accused of a crime he didn't commit but he ended up released and ultimately met his future. Leah really had his back although her father and mother turned their back on her, she still ended up with a great mate. Darius was an abuser, but he got dealt with by Roc! This was a good read.
Wonderful story about a guy who went to prison for something he didn't do and missed out on life with his son who has grown up. On the other hand he falls for his counselor not realizing who she is and has some thoughts which are incorrect. After all it is a happy ending
