You know that feeling when a story gives you goosebumps? I love that feeling.
And the one where you read something that puts a lump in your throat and smoke in your eyes? I love that one too.
And the feeling that you know what's going to happen next, only to find out to your absolute delight that you couldn't have been more wrong? I love that feeling too.
I love reading stories that move me and challenge my assumptions and teach me something. I love the way a great author lures me in and takes me along for a fantastic ride.
I also love to write stories. It's how I spend my days and a good share of my nights, too. I'm on a quest to write the perfect story full of perfect sentences. I don't know if I'm anywhere close, but I enjoy the gentle struggle.
I actually like this author very much, having read the first 8 books in this series with Sam Jameson. ( ADDENDUM- the writer has written back to me after I wrote this review and explain why he did what he did. I respect him for that! Therefore, I have changed my rating to a 4 instead of a 2)
However, when I got to this novel, I found that the author had not researched the location for his story line very well. Let me explain that I am a very proud Canadian and most of this book took place on location in a beautiful area of northern Ontario called Thunder Bay, located on Lake Superior.
On several occasions he misrepresented my country through blantant misinformation. He claims that there was only one month a year when the weather was bearable - in July - and the other 11 months it is a frozen tundra. Absolutely false! So wrong! We have beautiful weather there 5-6 months of the year!
Another blantant misrepresentation was that Thunder Bay was located in Mountain Standard Time which it is NOT, it is located in Eastern Standard Time!
He also claimed that the airport was one of the busiest in Canada which is also false. It ranks only 16th in the country.
He talked about our sub par ‘socialist’ health care system in a very negative way when we, as Canadians, love our healthcare system for the most part.
So, it is for these reasons and several more that I found this novel very frustrating to read because of the way he disparaged my country.
Lastly, he provided a short story at the end of the book novel called ´Shanghaeid in Paris’. He sets the story and introduces us to the characters and you get right into the story and then he doesn’t even finish it! He leaves you hanging. Not impressed!
I have written to the author and I hope he at least explains why he felt it necessary to disparage my country. Poetic licence? Sorry I don’t buy it!

Lars Emmerich never disappoints, and in this book you can see an evolution of style. No restrictions and no holds barred narrative, just pure, extreme and unadulterated fun, particularly suitable for mature audiences and those not overly influenced by modern pop-ideology. I wish his team would open only one official website with all his books and artwork, since Amazon was jettisoned after failing to support economically his works, as it's also happening with other writers.
Another great book by Lars Emmerich. Hard to put down but too intense to read without enough sleep! Must say, the subject matter of this book gutted me a couple of times and had to put the book down and take a long breather. Didn't stop me from reading it though! Enough to make any parent so scared for their children, even the older ones. Well worth reading.
Very disturbing topic so the graphical scenes were difficult to listen to. Story also went very slow. The audiobook is 11 hours which is not much different than the time covered in the book. Too much background, explanations and Sam's thoughts vs action, but a lot of the action was disturbing due to the topic of kids in a deadly sex game.
I generally like this type of pulp fiction, except when the author uses the cheap cliche of a cliffhanger. Just too many loose ends and unnecessary exposition. I ended up skimming most of the chapters.
