If you love fantasy, and slow burn enemy to lovers romances, then this book is for you!
When Amelia Williams winds up in Church Heights – a small town in the remote wilderness – the first thing she notices is the number of missing persons. The second is Karson Worthington; a tall, magnetising man she can’t seem to get out of her head. When people are murdered, and Amy is nearly killed, she begins to uncover the dark mysteries etched in the very fabric of the town itself. What she discovers tears the realms of reality out from under her feet. The deeper she falls in love with Karson, the deeper she plummets into a world of merciless, barbaric factions that put her life in grave danger. The Bite is an addictive story of love and loss, of self-discovery, betrayal, and a bitter fight for survival.
Trigger warnings: Strong violence, sexual assault, sex scenes and strong language.
Andy Barnes lives Tasmania with her husband, Nick, and their two girls, Pirri and Inika. When she isn't glued to the keyboard, a steaming cup of coffee and a choc chip cookie by her side, then you can usually find her running her children around, from one thing to another, or outside enjoying nature with the families labradors, Tilly, Caddie and Pepper.
This book was so good. And so very long. I really enjoyed the story. The characters. The plot. Only thing I did not enjoy was the cliffhanger. 😭 I usually wait for all parts of a series. I thought this as a stand-alone. It is not.
Extremely long, lots of grammatical errors and ends with a cliffhanger. Two years and still awaiting a sequel. This is why I think you should never read multiple part books unless all are completed. Correcting all the errors as you progress, the story is not horrible but it's really disappointing that after 800+ pages story still is incomplete.
To be honest, I can't remember where I found this books, maybe tiktok I dont know. But I am interested in reading it.
Only a few pages in and I am fully invested. I am hoping this book is not like 'Twilight', but I'm not thankfully getting those kind of vibes from this book. reading further I am sucked into the story, the imagery the author has used, creates the world as im reading.
im trying to wrap my mind around this book, it had sucjed me in. im loving the mystery, the different points of view. the fact that the povs are not confusing and links well with the rest if the story. seeing karson risking his life to save amy, shows he cares for her, but there is an air of mystery about him that i cant put my finger on. its the same with ethan. amy is also a mystery to me, but i love her as a character.
as much as i love this book, i needed to take a break...
went back to this after a break from my kindle. im feeling the tension between amy and karson. i am worried about amys wolf friend, but cant help feeling that it is not a wolf at all, but i could be wrong though.
i have to say i have not really read a plot like this before. i really love it. i am finding it a little confusing, but it is still very easy to follow.
im so glad that amy and karson have or are working out their differences. i will say that the spice scenes in my opinion is very clunky written but with this book im more interested in the plot than the spice.
dahlia has her heart in the right place but maybe her choice of words about Amy and karson, needs thinking over. but to be honest her words have me wondering about the relationship between amy and karson. i dont want her to get hurt, after already going through so much in her life.
even with the serious nature of the this book, the humor is not lost and im still laughing out load.
amy seems to be a trouble magnet, maybe karson cares after all, and just like that the tears are falling and heartbreak connection with this book.
i was not expecting that plot twist, karson finally learning to love as well.
the only thing that i am sad about is i want to know what happens next.
brilliant read! one of the best books I have read this year!
I can’t believe this is Andy Lee Barnes first book and let me tell you it was truly superb. Honestly, I was so immersed that I’m finding it hard to come back to real life. It’s a long read but that’s what makes you bond with the characters so well and now I’m sitting here actually missing them. It’s not just that, Andy’s writing is what draws you in and feel so much. Genuinely I could not put this down. Amelia needs a fresh start. She feels she has nobody left. Her mothers dead and her father has disowned her. Top it all off, she finds her boyfriend in bed with her best friend. Heart broken she packs up all she owns and gets in the car and just drives. Fate takes her to the remote town of Church Heights, population 8561 and a place where you can start again. This is no a sleepy town in any way shape or form and she is introduced to a world of Vampires, Witches, corrupt officials and ancient legends. This is a paranormal romance with dark elements but it had so many twists, turns and reveals along the way that it also felt like a thriller. Sooooo much in one book!! All the characters are great!! Amelia is caring but sassy, strong, fierce and won’t back down from a fight. Karson I loved and hated like all the best male love interests. He is gorgeous and domineering, a dark character who you don’t quite trust but the spicy chemistry between Amelia and him is off the charts! Their arguments were explosive and veeeerrry hot. Karsons friend Ethan is everything Karson is not. He is also gorgeous but warm and caring…ok and a bit of a womaniser. I must say I really loved this take on Vampire lore and their origins, it was so unique. My heart ached due to the powerful descriptive words. I laughed, cried and felt anger and jealousy like I was feeling everything done to me. The emotional hurt and pain made my chest ache. I can’t recommend this book enough as it has everything and was a complete rollercoaster of a ride. You will find you just can’t put it down. Be aware there is a cliffhanger and I didn’t know that going in but it just makes you hungry for more. Andy Lee Barnes is a fantastic writer and I have now read two of her books. Just based on how truly amazing her writing style is in those two I know, I will read anything she writes now. 5/5 Amazing stars and Andy please write more! You are amazing❤️
The creativity of this amazing author never ceases to amaze me!
This book is the third of Andy’s that I have read, and after reading They Just Won’t Bloody Die and it’s sequel, I know she would be one of my instant buy and read authors. First and foremost, she is an Aussie, and it really comes through in her writing. There are so many turns of the tongue that to be honest probably don’t make much sense outside of Australia, but it makes the book feel familiar and welcoming.
The plot line is so creative, so many twists and turns happening all the way through. The book was definitely a long one, and in my opinion could easily be split into two-three separate books, however something is happening all the time to keep the reader engaged.
The characters are for the most part loveable, the biggest one I had issue with is Amy and her constant questioning of Karson’s nature and humanity. At first I understood but it got a little annoying after half the book lol!
And Ethan 🤤 that is all.
All in all, a fantastic read, a little bit of spice sprinkled throughout, but it felt like the perfect amount. Can highly recommend this one for anyone who loves vampires and witches.
It seems to have been left open for a book 2, but I think I’ve seen posts about the author being unsure whether to write it or not. If it gets written, I’ll be buying it!
This book is about Amelia, a woman who had her entire world tipped upside down and inside out. She left the world she knew and the people she loved and wandered to a new place, new people.
She had no idea it was about to change her entire life. Toss in two hot guys and a cryptic storyline and it would normally make for a crazy good story. Dazzle in paranormal witches and vampires...dazzle dazzle.
This book is extremely long with an obscene amount of grammatical errors. Not to mention when finishing this book all I am left with is irritation because it screams an unfinished book. And even worse, nothing is indicating a book 2. zero.
The overall idea of this book had a great premise, and I was pulled in. But the author went heavy squirrel in this book and was throwing everything in it. The book could have easily been a 5-star book had she been more deliberate in the plot and not all over the place.
The MMC I enjoyed overall. He is what I would expect for his kind.
The FMC drove me utterly mental. Chronic whining about hurting people and other ways. Her trauma is relatable but good lord above the author dipped too hard in the whine pot on her.
Overall, decent read but had the potential of being 5 stars but because of the errors in the book, plot mishaps, and full on out in weeds sections...it detracted from everything so I rated 3 stars.
The Bite by Andy Lee Barnes is a haunting fusion of dark fantasy, forbidden romance, and psychological suspense a story that lures you in with desire and keeps you captive with danger.
When Amelia Williams arrives in the eerie town of Church Heights, she’s not just escaping her past she’s stepping into a nightmare disguised as paradise. Missing people, violent secrets, and a dangerously magnetic man named Karson Worthington pull her into a web where love and survival are indistinguishable.
Barnes crafts a world that feels cinematic in its tension and intimacy where every shadow hides a secret, and every kiss threatens to undo the fragile line between predator and prey. The chemistry between Amelia and Karson burns with slow, irresistible intensity, their connection both salvation and curse.
What makes The Bite stand out is its emotional realism amidst the fantasy the trauma, the moral ambiguity, and the painful beauty of transformation. Barnes doesn’t shy away from darkness; she makes it the soil from which strength, love, and truth are born.
For readers who crave atmospheric worlds, dangerous desire, and heroines who bleed and rise again, The Bite is as addictive as it is devastating a gothic storm of passion, peril, and power.
Amelia is adopted and has no clue who her parents are after being betrayed by her boyfriend and her best friend. she leaves home in search for peace but what she finds instead is a lot of questions, she's desperate for answers to, a new found family and a forbidden love.
I enjoyed this book is did not disappoint is was packed full of action and kept me on the edge of my seat for a good portion of it. The plot only thickens, does end on a cliffhanger in my opinion seems we may get another book as the story doesn't seem to be finished quite yet. The FMC was a tough girl a little naive at times and some what frustrating with her mind set but all around a good strong character. The question remains will their be a HEA?
I'm giving 3 stars due to the fact the book takes place in what I'm assuming in America due to Ohio and talk of Portland and seeing as how the FMC drove from her home to the little town. I'm assuming she's American as well but the words she uses and how she speaks was not full America some examples were Boot of the car in one sentence the saying Trunk the next or the usage of bloody and sook or bugger. So It was a bit confusing and required a few re reads of the sentence or chapter to make sure I was understanding it.
I really enjoy this book but I was left with more questions than answers.
First, why is it called the bite? No one ever gets bitten and the few pages we spent at the bite bar or whatever exclusive club we were at played a very small and insignificant role to the storyline. I thought maybe we would get a bite at the end but we didn't. If there's a book to maybe that will give us some more detail?
Whatever happened to Tom? I feel like his storyline was unfinished.
What role does her adoptive parents play in her storyline? I feel like they're were 800 pages of contacts but these big storylines don't get much details.
Why was she put up for adoption? Where does her bloodline come from? We didn't get anything to help build her background.
Why is the coven so hell bent on getting her trained? What kind of extra super witchy power does she have and how did she get it?
Karson- I feel like there could be half a book on his background and we barely get any history.
I guess I'm really just hoping there will be a book two.??
TITLE: The Bite GENRE: Paranormal Romance AUTHOR: Andy Lee Barns TROPE: Enemies-to-Lovers, Vampires & Witches TYPE: Standalone POV: Dual POV MY RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5
After a falling out with her dad and breaking up with her fiancé, Amelia (Amy) needs a fresh start and finds her way to the small town of Church Heights. Feeling let down and abandoned by everyone, Amy feels isolated and alone until she slowly starts making friends in this remote town. Church Heights has a notorious history of mysterious missing persons and random car accidents, but Amy is still drawn to Church Heights for some reason.
The Bite is a long book, which I prefer over novella-length books; it is full of twists, turns, angst, and suspense that keeps me interested in the storyline until the end. Be warned it ends with a HFN (happy for now) so there are some open ended questions but not enough that I did not feel any closure. I hope the author will continue with a second book at some point; I would love to return to this world and its characters again. I am giving a rating of 4 / 5 stars.
When I first saw the page count, I almost didn't start. I'm glad I did. Good solid plot. Interesting, original twists you wouldn't see coming. Characters that were likable and hateable. It was a page turner. Takeaways 1. Karson is a jerk. The whole 500-year tortured soul thing got old. He kept using it as an excuse to treat Amy like crap. He did eventually pull his head out of his backside. 2. Amy has that fatal flaw in women, trying to change the boyfriend. It never works. Again, she did eventually realize she needed to take a step back and rethink. 3. It's not a major cliffhangar, but it definitely did not tie everything up. I wouldn't even call it a happy for now ending. There are more unanswered questions than answered, and I haven't seen any mention of a second book. Overall, I would recommend it, but I would have given more stars if it had a better ending or any indication that there would be another book.
1⭐️ I can’t understand how this book got such a good rating on here. I had to dnf it at 10% because it was that bad. It reads like a wattpad story, it is way too long and has so many grammatical errors that I just couldn’t read more than 70 pages. I wouldn’t complain about the length of the book if it were written good but the author only got it to this length because she had such a vivid and long explanation of the surroundings that it overtook almost all of the story. And I am not going to torture myself to read about how beautiful the surroundings are or what the room the character is staying at looks like in every detail. This was a hard no for me.
I’m about 72% through this book and seriously debating whether to finish it. The story has started to drag, and it’s becoming more of a chore than a pleasure to read. It feels repetitive and tedious at this point, and I’ve lost interest in where it’s headed.
Another issue that’s been hard to ignore: the dialogue. If you're setting a book in the U.S., it’s really important to get the language and tone right. A lot of the phrases and word choices just don’t sound natural for American characters, which kept pulling me out of the story. It’s clear the author doesn’t have a strong grasp of American vernacular, and it shows.
I *might* come back to finish it later, but honestly, probably not.
Unfortunately, I had to DNF this one - and trust me, I hate doing that. I really tried to sink my teeth into it, but no matter how many times I picked it back up, I just couldn’t get into the story or connect with the characters.
There may be a solid tale here for the right reader, but for me, the pacing and tone didn’t hold my attention long enough to see it through. Sometimes a book just isn’t the right fit, and that’s okay.
Not every story belongs in my hoard - but I always respect the craft it takes to write one.
I absolutely love this book. There were editing errors that did bug me but I still couldn't put this book down. I thought this was a standalone but the book ended on a cliffhanger. Had I known that I would have just added it to my list and waited till the second book came out. When is the second book coming out? I hope soon because I need to know what happens. Ugh
Ends in a cliffhanger and according to the Author, she has chapter 1 of book 2 finished and that’s it. She never really planned on continuing and she’s struggling with the follow up. Maybe don’t write a cliffhanger if you don’t plan on following up with book 2 🤦🏻♀️
The story itself was good and I plan on reading another series of hers. I’m just really disappointed in the ending and all the loose ends.
Emotional and heartbreaking, but with loyalty and love found in an unlikely place.
Emotional roller-coaster of heartbreak, lost friendship, and family. Finding the strength to move on and love again. Found family and friends in an unlikely place. It's worth the read for sure. The ending is abruptly done and somewhat unsatisfying. There definitely needs to be a follow-up because so much is left undone. There is a happy for now ending, however.
This is a great first book Vampires and witches make for interesting tales. Although a first attempt, it carries almost everything you'd expect from an independent author. The ending has no closure and no cliff hanger.
4 stars due to the editing or lack thereof.
*** Reading that this has been edited twice tells me the editors were lacking. There are several grammatical and structural errors throughout the book.
I very much enjoyed this book, but, at over 800 pages, it needs some editing. The main character, Amy, is from the U.S., but her internal dialogue contains slang that I associate more with someone from Australia or New Zealand. Not that you can't understand it - it's clear from context - but it is a bit jarring when it happens. There are also quite a few characters introduced, especially in the bar, and I occasionally had to reread to make sure I understood which guy Amy and her friends were referencing.
But even though it was long and had a few issues, I couldn't put it down. I really liked Amy, Karson and Ethan. I was delighted by Darcy and his forthright, neurodiverse contributions. The story has paranormal characters looking for the answers to several mysteries, in the midst of sorting out who they are, who they are becoming, and what they really want.
I wasn't always able to predict the direction the story was going to take, which was a pleasant change for me. I was genuinely surprised by the identity of the villain, and I didn't see the ending coming at all. Of course, it leaves open the possibility for a second book, but the author gave us several books worth of world building in this volume, so the ending that some are referring to as a cliffhanger, I read as the surprising conclusion of a standalone.
I would like to see Karsen's POV. His faithfulness when they were apart. To give Amelia a reason to trust. Amelia mature, someone who is, doesn't constantly remind people that they are not a child, or make headstrong, life threatening decisions, or argue all the time with her love interest.
I really enjoyed this book a lot! So many twists and turns. It ended on a cliffhanger so I'll have to see what the others bring!
The only downside is that there's a TON of grammatical errors and punctuational errors. Seemed like some lazy editing was done unfortunately. It really took me out of the story every time I noticed an error. Still a great story though!
Loved this book great characters! A lot of plot twists I did not see coming. Can’t believe how it ended and can’t wait to read the sequel. Hopefully it will be out very soon… I will normally stop reading any books that haven’t been edited properly but it was still a great read.
Bite was absolutely delicious. I devoured this book. I could not put it down. I really hope this isn’t the end for these characters though. I wanted more of an ending for them. I feel like I was left in the middle of their story. However, with that being said I am still happy with everything that happened. I am in love with this authors writing style.
I really liked this book until the ending. I really loved all the characters and the plot of this book. It is incredibly long so I was expecting a great ending and there was no ending. Not sure if there is gonna be a sequel but after two days of heavy reading I was left with nothing. Ugh so disappointed.
The story was very much “twilightish” but undeveloped…the author does have a good grasp of being a great writer it’s just the story was long and drawn out way too much…I got bored and did skip whole pages as it was too drawn out…the ending fell flat and unresolved…I guess if you’re a tween you’d probably enjoy this
More paranormal fantasy than romance, but great nonetheless
Loved this book! Only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars was that it’s set in the US but uses UK spelling and phrases. It kept jarring me out of the world the author created. I will be checking out other books by Andy Lee Barnes for sure!
I really enjoyed this book. Yes it’s long but it’s enjoyable from start to end. I did get a little fed up with Amelia’s anti violence saying she loves all of him but constantly being disgusted by his actions even though it’s part of him and cannot change it.
The love story is so well balanced and it was great to read.
