Rate this book
"This is the first book that I know of that truly helps you learn from women from many professional sectors how to recover from big setbacks in our work lives. It’s a must read.” —Dr. Elena Pezzini, organizational psychologist

#1 New Release in Job Hunting

Successful women show how they reclaimed and rebuilt their personal power and careers after being fired from a job and being rendered powerless by their employers.

Practical job loss recovery tools for women.
When women get fired, it is often devastating, traumatic, and isolating. We experience a sudden powerlessness that can destroy our confidence and feelings of self-worth. We grieve. We feel broken. It affects our self-esteem, our financial well-being, our professional identity, and our ability to look for other work―in short, it affects our entire way of life. How, then, does a woman navigate the emotional impact of this event? With other women.

You are not alone. In Betrayed by Work, authors Julia Erickson, MBA, and Suzanne Vosburg, PhD, bear witness to the stories of women just like you―and just like them. This book shows how women lost their jobs, describes what happened to them immediately and in the aftermath, validates women’s feelings about being fired, and offers a source of hope and companionship to those of us coping with either our own job loss or the sudden job loss of someone we know or love.

Discover:

-- True stories from women who are honest about how they were fired and their feelings
-- Key points to help process each story and apply its lesson to your own experience
-- Practical takeaways and suggestions to help you cope with job loss

If you were encouraged by personal growth books about women in business like Invaluable by Maya Grossman, In the Company of Women by Grace Bonney, Presence by Amy Cuddy, or Power Moves by Lauren McGoodwin, then you’ll be inspired and empowered by Betrayed by Work.

This audiobook was such a good listen. Having been unexpectedly fired for no reason back on April 1st last year, I’ve struggled deeply with feelings of confusion, anger, and mostly BETRAYAL. The owner (who was a friend from college) didn’t even bother to communicate this terrible news directly with me. Instead he enlisted my husband (who has worked for this friend for almost 2 decades) communicate the decision that I was being replaced with a “professional”. Bear in mind I was cleaning their warehouse. There isn’t a college degree for sweeping and scrubbing toilets and taking trash to the dumpster. Not once was I told that my work was not acceptable. Any time I was asked to do something additional, I immediately implemented those changes to my work. This news of my replacement, of course, was given to me by my husband at his own 40th bday dinner with our kids. Needless to say, the whole night was then ruined for me and I spent the entire meal hiding my tear filled eyes from my family and wishing I could run from the restaurant and scream in frustration.

It’s been ten months but I am still absolutely shocked and disgusted and deeply hurt by the unprofessional and impersonal way this was handled. I have felt so alone and worthless for the demoralizing way I was treated, but this book showed me that apparently lots of women are brushed off callously by horrible managers and senseless bosses. It doesn’t make my pain any less, but it does help to know I’m not alone and others can relate. It’s a crappy club to be a part of…the “I never saw this coming” and “never thought I’d get fired” club.

Interesting concept, though I thought it ended up being quite repetitive. Also just women that I cannot relate to whatsoever lol. Everyone featured in this book sounds like they worshipped their jobs a little too much, no wonder losing it was so devastating for all of them. Bottom line, don't give your soul to your work? I didn't even finish the whole book. Got about 3/4 of the way before I put it down. Skimming the rest seems like more of the same.

Essential reading for anyone who has been let go without cause or explanation at the height of their career. Highly recommend.
