Crescent Five #1

Moon Guardian

Rate this book
I broke the pact and now I’m stuck with five sexy mates.
Wolves aren’t supposed to mate humans. Humans also aren’t supposed to interrupt sacred mating ceremonies, but I had a good reason, all right? I needed magic, and I needed a lot of it to save my little sister from the Moon Shadow plague running rampant in human territory.

Do the wolves think twice about consequences? No. They’ve been careless of the side effects caused by their little territory battles. They have never cared about us.

But they’ll care now, because I have all of their magic in the palm of my hand.

Literally. The Goddess Crescent was supposed to be a myth, the power to turn a human and unite the major clans. I just didn’t expect it to bond me to an Alpha from each of the five packs, and now I’m afraid I bit off far more than I can chew.

* Five Fated Mates with No Choosing Required
* Slow-Burn Romance
* Rejected Mate/Second Change tropes with severe groveling by book 3
* Human Female and Wolf Shifter Males

First reread - 3rd of March 2023: This was just as good the second time around. I really love this world and the characters and I can't wait to finally continue this series.

Original review:

This was so intense. I love how it builds up from special flower picking under the moonlight, to interrupting a sacred mating ritual and setting off a chain of events that can't be undone.

Kane is my favourite so far, but I'm excited to see the grovelling the others will have to do, it'll be so fun.

And the world building? Amazing.

As a big fan of crossovers, the ending got me really excited to see what would come next. I have time to read the other books in the world by the time book two is out, so I'll get on that soon.

It's so short that it's hard to rate this. The fmc and the love interests literally didn't even have a real conversation. We also don't know anything of the love interests except their names. I will read book 2 though, because they are short and I'm curious to what happens next.

I both loved this story and was hugely disappointed by it.

Let me explain the disappointment really fast. This is an interconnected Portal Universe that has, I think, four other series before this one. Now the author says you don't need to read those other series to enjoy this one and I would have believed her because I had no clue there were related series until I read the last chapter where random characters came in through a previously unknown portal and it became obvious I was missing something. Before the final chapter, I would have felt fine reading on but now I feel like I need to immerse myself in the whole universe and learn all the character's backstories😭

Okay back to this book, it's a fantasy world with shifters and humans (and something more?) with a human FMC who seems to carry the same power the shifters use. It is a rejected mate story that is slow-burn with promised groveling in book 3!!! It would be perfect if not for the multi-verse.

The FMC lives in the human village and has lost loved ones due to a magical storm that is infecting the humans. The FMC however is not infected the same way the humans are, instead of getting sick she absorbs the power from the storm which makes her the perfect person to hunt the forests for magical flowers that will protect their people from the storms. While on one such "hunting" trip a series of unfortunate events caused the FMC to feel the pain and grief of all of those lost loved ones again and channels that grief into hatred towards the shifters and their magic. This leads to another series of unfortunate events that get the plot rolling.

I found the story interesting and the fantasy world seemed fun to explore, I would really love to continue this series but I'm stuck on whether or not I should read some of the other series in the shared universe first.

The author's books are too short. I don't mean in the "I want to read more and am sad to have to leave this world because the book is over" sense, either. I mean, there is way too much missing info. The Alphas are barely described; after reading book 2, I *think* I can tell you all their names, but I can't tell you anything about them except that Kane has... silver hair? Grey? The four who rejected her are basically just assholes with no redeeming qualities, and nothing to really tell them apart. So even though we got a few different POVs, it didn't matter, because there was nothing to really differentiate between them except that one of them regretted the decision first.

I have no idea what the main character looks like. She was... blonde? I don't know anything about her past except that she lost one sister, we saw her lose a friend on page, and another sister is dying.

There's no real world-building beyond "random storms destroy human things, flowers that grow in moonlight help." Somehow the storms have something to do with the wolves, or at least the humans think they do, but there's no explanation as to how or why. The wolves were attacked and all the packs have new alphas, but we don't know who attacked or why. There's a bunch of dead wolves in the city when she sneaks in, but again, don't know why or who killed them.

What's disappointing is that this story could have worked; the premise is interesting, if not original, and the world could have been great if it had been explored. But it's all very one dimensional.

Also, not exactly related to this book, but I wish this author would finish series before starting new ones! The series that comes before this one isn't even finished, this one isn't finished, and she's already started at least one new series that comes after this one, all set in the same world. But I don't feel compelled to read any more of her books because I'm not sure how I'm supposed to read the series in order if they aren't even finished yet!

Not amused with that ending, to be honest. Had I known that I would benefit from reading the Fortune Academy series first, I wouldn't have started this when it came out.

But it's my own fault. I'm a glutton for rejected mates and this had my name written all over it so, of course, it went on my wishlist long before it released. And, my luck, it would be my first endeavor into JR Thorn's writing.

This is a reverse harem, paranormal, rejected mate novel. It moves quickly and there is a bit of heat towards the end. I enjoy Katlyn overall but I'm hoping her character develops more in book two as it felt like even being in her point of view she was a little flat.

The initial drive of the why she ventures further into wolf territory does not sit right with me. I know that there's something else going on and I'm not sure how I feel about the whole thing.

I also could not tell you the difference between any of the mates at this point other than Kane. You dont get enough of them or their POVs for an opinion or favorite.

Katlyn is a human living in a world where wolf shifters are the superior race. Humans are prey and are usually killed. During the wolf shifters scared High Moon, Katlyn and her friend Charlie were on an outing in an restricted wolf area looking for moon flowers, which keeps humans safe during the High Moon. Unfortunately one of the alpha wolves catches her scent and drags her to the ceremony. Katlyn angrily absorbs the moon goddess orb. Now she is on the run from 4 alpha’s who want to destroy her. She gets some unexpected help but can she trust the wolf shifters?

Moon Guardian by J.R. Thorn is Book 1 in the Crescent Five series. This is a beautifully written story in a fascinating world the author has created and the characters are well developed. Katlyn (a hated human) is dragged to the High Moon Ceremony (a sacred mating ceremony) where she angrily absorbs the Moon Goddess Orb and finds herself mated to 5 alphas. She is now hunted as the wolves want her dead. Katlyn is strong, resilient, and fearless and plans on teaching the wolves the error of their ways. Loved this book and anxiously waiting for the next in series to see how this adventure will progress. Highly recommended. Received an ARC and this is my voluntary review.

Only negative pojnt is it is shorter than I'd like it but it is a very good start for a series. It's intriguing since we get to know a human girl who is changing to be a goddess for the wolves. Can she unite them? There's a prophecy and hello it's shifters so yeah I'm excited!

Warning: cliffhanger ending!!!
This book has an Dystopian feel to it

And I have more questions than answers after reading this book. This is apparently part of the authors "Blood Stone Universe" a combination of 6 different series by this author. The Crescent Five series is fourth on this list (if anyone wants to know)

The humans are prey to the wolves and their world is plagued with magical storms that destroye their land. But the wolves land is thriving with life.

We follow Katlyn or Kaitsja into the wolves teritory trying to find Moon Blossoms to protect her family and the other humans from the magical storms. But she has been hit with lightning? That destroyed all the flowers they already had found so she decides to disrupt the wolves ceremony and destroy their Goddess's power to prevent new magical storms because these are somehow linked to those ceremonies?

I'm not going to spoil the cliffhanger ending, but the (bonus) epilogue seemed to be part of an other series by this author "Fortune Academy" and since I have not read that one I have no clue what's going on or who these characters are.

I almost wish I had picked another book to read instead of this one with the confusing characters 🙄

So I’ll be the first to admit that I am a huge sucker for Jen’s books!

I just finished her newest release, Moon Guardian and oh how I loved every second of it!
It’s different from all the shifter books I’ve read and it’s a welcomed difference!!

This story follows the human Katlyn who is dead set on keeping her family safe, so she ventured into the wolf lands to find the sacred blooms that can save her village from the storms. Whilst on her journey, she ventures a little too far and ends up splat bang in the epicentre of wolf city. There she accomplishes the unthinkable and seals her fate, linking herself to 5 alpha males and activating and ancient moon guardian prophecy.

She must run and she must hide,
Can she unite the 5?
Can she save her family?
Will she survive?

Please tell me, because I’m dying to know!!

Congratulations Jen! Another chair gripping story! Can’t wait for book 2!!💜💜

This was so good, that I literally re-played it a couple times before moving on. It’s a very quick read and while I did predict the outcome of this one, I feel like that was by design, and like there are twists to come as we get deeper into this series.

Though it’s a small book, there’s no shortage of things to love, and it’s very fast-paced. I recommend being ready with ‘Moon Cursed’ though, as you’ll likely very much want to keep reading.

🔮 Wolf shifters.
✨ Rival packs.
🔮 Fated mates.
✨ Rejected mates.
🔮 Lots of death, some off-page and some on.
✨ Hunting.
🔮 Moon magic.
✨ Enemies to … allies? For now …
🔮 Cryptic fortune-teller vibes.
✨ V!rg!n hero.
🔮 Humans living among shifters.
✨ Moon blossoms.

Not much holds my attention—this did, three times in a row.

Disappointing

This was really disappointing. Everything happened in one night but it was really slow and a bit boring. Also, the actual book was only 160 pages long with 40 pages of extras after it. And what the heck was that epilogue??? Why not mention that this would be linked with Fortune Academy BEFORE the book, not after?! I know she says you don't need to have read that series to understand this one, but I can't do that I need to read all or nothing. Feel like I've royally wasted my time with this book. 40 pages shorter than expected not much happening and then the most confusing epilogue I have EVER read (and I'm a 400 books a year girl)!! I genuinely thought they'd implanted the epilogue for a different book in the middle of this one, considering that it appeared as if there was another 20% of book left to read. It was just so abrupt and so weird.

🐺🌘 Loved this intro to the series!

One woman against HOW many alpha male wolves? Frankly I pity the wolves 😉. I am greatly looking forward to our main character making them realize the error of their ways in future books. I was immediately taken by this fascinating world the author drew us into. The strong, resilient, fearless female character tugs on our heartstrings as we are beautifully introduced to her on these pages. I absolutely LOVED this book!! Beware...there's a doozy of a cliffy at the end, but I've no doubt there's one heck of an adventure continuing in the next book.

I haven’t been this excited about a series, but this one has me on the edge of my seat. Especially with the epilogue! I hadn’t realized that this was part of the bigger picture. I’m so excited to see where all of this takes everything. I ever expanding universe.

As like per usual the first chapter intrigued me and the second one had me hooked. Or maybe it was the first. But what I said sounded better. Anyways! I love the multiple points of view that we get and the varying opinions. How this will all mesh is going to keep us on our toes!

DNF - quit at 20%
The flow is extremely slow, and by 20% I felt like nothing really happened, character jumps were confusing, as I had no clue who the characters were, other than assuming the main characters. There is no intro, not background, no world building to the point I quit, and because of that loss of info to ground me, I just didn't care about the story.

At my age (60), life is way too short & my time is too important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.

what the what

This book makes no sense. It goes 0 to 60.

RIP Charlie, and I guess forget those humans and her sister?!

It’s a quick read and I suppose that’s why everything is happening so quickly and making little to no sense.

I really didn’t know what I was getting myself in to but the premise is interesting even if I’m not sure what just happened.

Anything I thought I understood was thrown out by the epilogue… like who is Dante??? Why is he doing all that?!

WHAT WAS THE POINT

This is such a fascinating world that this author has created. A world where wolf shifters are the superior and humans not so much! Imagine interrupting a sacred ceremony of the shifters and stealing all their magic which then mates / binds you to the alphas of those five packs. Well that’s what happened to Katlyn and now she’s on the run. It’s exciting and enthralling with a strong and kick ass female human mc and I am impatient for the next book!

a new fav…

Oh my stars… I wish there was more, aside from the cliffhanger and the promise of a book two. Came across this gem and binge read it within half a day. Loss of sleep totally worth it. Prophecy, shifters, packs divided, a hunt and more. This book has everything from rejected mates to fated mates. Being a new reviewer I am telling you you must read this now because book two is coming out soon.

This was pretty good but man… i feel like she didn’t even get a say in anything that happened.

She stood her ground for a while there and then went with what felt right…. Thats one thing I really don’t like about these books

For some reason I feel like she doesn’t have a say or a choice… she just listens to her heart and goes with it bc it felt like it was supposed to happen.

But a good book i digress

Well well well.. five alphas wolves and one determined woman, guess who is in troubles? Ok.. I know that it seems that’s it’s Katlyn.. but.. well.. I wouldn’t like to be in those wolves shoes (paws? 🤣). MC is determined, fearless and strong woman. The world is very nice. Personages - interesting. Book - fast-paced. Cliffhanger - frustrating (as cliffhanger should be). It’s definitely good read.

Such a fantastic world to delve into. Loved it!

very quick, but interesting plot

I wish this book wasn’t so rushed so I could experience the full potential this plot has.
Everything comes to head quite quickly and it almost feels disappointing in a way to know it could’ve been a fave for me if it wasn’t so rushed, I’m not sure if I’ll read the next, but if I do it’ll be because I’m curious
