Ageing rock star attempting comeback does not want to change - 3 stars
Marc Charles was an Australian Rock and Roll star in 1970. Now, in 2015, he is a dinosaur with no new material and a desire to continue as is. His life is pleasurable. His body is not worn out and his voice is still capable. While there are still fans who remember him and occasional attend his occasional concerts, the money is no longer coming in. His marketing firm has been bought out by a California firm; the Americans want Mar's assets, expecting to have Marc pay for their marketing services.
There are over 5000 pages detailing the life of Marc Charles as he tries to continue the style, musically and physically after 45 years. .There are countless trysts and a few revival concerts. For the most part, Mark manages to dress and act the way he did decades ago with a huge number of consensual escapades. Marc is attracted by good looking women who are more than willing to spend time with him.
The plan to exploit Marc financially is mostly hidden by highlighting Marc's skirt chasing. Marc is not business oriented - he relies on his lawyer and accountant to deal with details. The new owner of the entertainment marketing firm is trying to get Marc to commit to a new contract which favors the management company.
Not washed up but rapidly approaching non relevance and a generation that likes golden oldies for occasional retrospection, the story focuses on short term planning. Marc seems to be dangerously close to trying to insult and embarrass the new American while continuing to live a sybaritic life of pleasure. There are follow-on books in the series which I will not pursue.
The story is writing in unique and exciting. The characters are all unusual and keeps you enjoyed. I know the guitars giving different tones and techniques brings me many memories of my past. I didn't want to start the story.
A rolicking romp deep inside the life of an aging Rock Star dinosaur as told directly from his lips. You'll laugh out loud at all the hi-jinx. A great read with a very subtle plot woven throughout.
