Jessie Novak #2

The Frozen Girl

Rate this book
The young woman’s mouth is slightly parted, as if waiting to speak. Her body is frozen in ice and her blue eyes stare at the sky, perhaps wanting to look at the stars one last time…

When the body of a woman is found in the frozen Neponset River, just where it meets the sea, Jessie Novak and her partner Detective Sam Dallas rush to the scene. When Jessie sees a flash of a familiar silk scarf, she’s shocked to realize the girl in the ice is Sheila Logan, who she worked closely with for years at Boston City Hospital. Jessie desperately wants to find out how this young and talented nurse ended up an innocent victim.

But who would want to kill her? As she digs into Sheila’s past, Jessie realizes she was having an affair with a colleague and may even have been pregnant. Was her lover unwilling to be a father to her child? The pain of Sheila’s death threatens to tear open Jessie’s old wounds—Jessie’s own mother walked out on her when she was just a baby and never looked back. She can’t change her own past, but she’s determined to get justice for Sheila.

When Sheila’s neighbor is found dead, also wearing a distinctive scarf, Jessie sees a lethal pattern forming. Next, someone breaks into Jessie’s car and she knows she’s being warned off the case. But with the killer in her sights, will she take the deadliest risk of her life? Can Jessie catch him, before he catches up to her?

This utterly addictive novel will keep you up all night! Fans of Lisa Regan, Rachel Abbott and Tess Gerritsen will be totally hooked until the last heart-thumping page.

The Frozen Girl is the second instalment in the Jessie Novak series set in Boston, Massachusetts. When 911 receive a call from Patrick O’Hara who claims to have discovered a dead body previously hidden by the ice in the murky depths of the Neponset River, police are sent out to recover what's left of the remains. 27-year-old ER nurse and liaison between Boston Police Department, the Medical Examiner and the victim, Jessie Novak turns up at 8 am to watch the procedures at the Medical Examiner's Office where she meets Dr Roger Dawson the state’s Chief ME. She was there to watch the autopsy of a young man who had died from a gunshot wound but soon Dawson mentions the Jane Doe who had been brought into the morgue a day earlier. The body was the one found in the river and Jessie stays to watch Dawson and his assistant, Tony, start the work. They find deep ligature marks around her neck and a fractured hyoid bone but concede that this will be a tough autopsy as the body is in a state of advanced decomposition. A short time later, Jessie’s love interest Detective Sam Dallas shows her the multicoloured silk scarf that had been wrapped tightly around Jane Doe’s neck as well as a black pearl necklace. Immediately, Jessie recognises them as belonging to her old boss at the hospital.

Sheila Logan was a nurse who disappeared around three months ago. They didn't get along but she certainly wasn't the only one as Sheila was disliked by many. Jessie is now no longer allowed to be involved in the investigation and becomes a person of interest, however, she is cleared of any involvement soon after and is reinstated on the case. Despite not liking Sheila, Jessie wants justice for her murdered colleague and begins to dig uncovering evidence, including a concerning series of emails in Sheila’s office, that help in progressing the investigation. Little does she know that someone has their beady eye on her and she is in more danger than she or her police colleagues realise. This is a compelling, intriguing and well-plotted police procedural with plenty of mystery to it and some interesting characters. Jessie's heart seems to be in the right place although she does have a tendency to take matters into her own hands frequently disregarding the safety of those she works alongside. Told exclusively from Jessie’s perspective, this allows you to immerse yourself in the story without the often unnecessary switches between points of view and the twists, turns and fiendishly good red herrings culminate in an action-packed, explosive conclusion.

ER Nurse Jessie Novak is now working part-time at the hospital and part time as a liaison between homicide detectives and the medical examiner

When a woman is found in the frozen river, she is devastated to identify the victim as a previous nurse manager that she had worked with for years. Did she drown ... accident .. murder?

There are several different story lines to follow in this one. First, the victim having ties to the hospital, especially when Jessie discovers that the victim was involved with a well-know doctor. Jessie also finds connections to a cold case ... another nurse, found in a frozen river. An older woman seems to be following Jessie ... who is she and what does she want? Jessie is being warned off ... he apartment has been broken into .... a purse-snatcher has accosted her ... a car has tried to run her over. And then there's the possibility of a romance for Jessie.. but can he be trusted?

Although 2nd in the series, this is easily read as a stand alone. I do recommend reading in order because the characters are stand-out. There's plenty of action, engaging twists and turns, and a breath-taking conclusion. As the author is an experienced nurse herself, I expected a great deal of credibility in handling the medical portion of this book ... I was not disappointed. I was happy to see that medical terminology was explained in language for those who have not been in the medical field.

Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

This book is the second instalment in the Jessie Novak series written by Roberta Gately, set in Boston, Massachusetts.

Patrick O’Hara rings 911 saying he has discovered a dead body previously hidden by the ice in the murky depths of the Neponset River. Meanwhile, Emergency Room Triage Nurse Jessie Novak has arrived at the ME's office for an 8 am meeting. She's there to see Dr Roger Dawson the state’s Chief ME and watch the autopsy of a young man who had died from a gunshot wound and Dawson mentions the woman who was brought into the morgue earlier. The body is the same one that was found in the Neponset River. Detective Sam Dallas, Jessie’s love interest, shows her the multicoloured silk scarf that was taken from the victim's neck as well as a black pearl necklace and Jessie recognises them. They belong to her previous boss at the hospital...

The Frozen Girl was a compelling read and I was soon wholly absorbed in the storyline. Jessie is edgy, sharp and a little different to your average protagonist. I liked Jessie's intelligence, astuteness and keen sense of observation. This novel was a wicked and exciting thriller where no one could be trusted and with dangerous situations, keeping things peppy. It was so good and I can't wait for book three!

I received a complimentary copy of this novel from Bookouture via NetGalley at my request and this review is my own unbiased opinion.

A sweet thriller it was when a frozen woman brought out turned out to be her missing boss. So Jessie started her own covert investigation and get to the truth. This was a fast moving story with many suspects and an explosive ending. I liked Jessie much more in this book than the earlier one. Enjoyed it.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of The Frozen Girl, the second novel to feature Jessie Novak, ER Nurse and liaison between Boston PD Homicide, the Medical Examiner and the victim.

When a body is pulled out of the Neponset river Jessie is shocked to realise that it is Sheila Logan, her boss who disappeared months ago. Barred from the case due to being a person of interest Jessie is determined to conduct her own investigation and get justice for Sheila, even if she didn’t like her.

I enjoyed The Frozen Girl which is a fairly straightforward detective novel with one discovery leading to another until a suspect is uncovered, culminating in the traditional action packed showdown scene. I liked that it is told entirely from Jessie’s point of view as it is easy to get immersed in the narrative without distractions and the need to switch focus.

I haven’t read the previous novel in the series, but it doesn’t matter as the novel is self-contained. I’m not sure exactly why, perhaps a sense of implied knowledge, but I knew from the start that this wasn’t the first novel to feature the characters even though I was unaware of a preceding novel at the time. I think reading it first would give the reader a higher comfort level with the characters.

I found the novel very readable with developments and reveals at a steady pace, pushing the reader to continue. The plot is acceptable but not wildly exciting and I didn’t find it tense. It’s an easy way to pass a few hours.

Maybe I’m too old but I didn’t take to Jessie Novak. It’s her way or the highway, so she’s not a team player and often branches out on her own. I have no understanding of how she thinks, but she seems to rely on instinct rather than hard facts and that’s simply annoying.

The Frozen Girl will hold your attention so I can recommend it.

Jessie Novak is a busy ER nurse. As if her time isn't already at a premium, she joins the Homicide unit in the Boston Police Department as a forensic nurse. Jessie will be working along with Sam Dallas, a close friend, and perhaps soon to be more. With one of Jessie's workmates at the hospital is discovered to be missing, it is disturbingly shocking to discover that she was a murder victim, found frozen in a river near the ocean.

The body belongs to Sheila Logan, identified at the autopsy Jessie attends as part of her new job. Jessie's job does not entail being a homicide detective, but she does whatever she can to try to determine why Sheila was killed and who could be responsible. Sheila did not have a good reputation. In fact, she was not well liked, by Jessie and others. But, professional to the core, Jessie puts those feelings aside to try to unravel the pieces to what proves to be a complicated case.

Rumors were already floating about that Sheila was having an affair with a colleague at the hospital, but even more, she very well might have been pregnant. While Jessie is searching for clues, she has a major distraction. Abandoned by her mother while very young, a woman approaches Jessie saying that she is her mother. Jessie wonders how much she can trust the stranger that knows some details about her early life, but trust is far from her reach.

When another murder occurs, Jessie and Sam cannot help but wonder if the cases are connected, especially when their appears to be a similar clue with the new body. Meanwhile, the closer Jessie gets, the more dangerous things get for her. There was a character right from the start that I did not trust, so it was interesting to see whether or not I was on the right track.

I am enjoying Jessie and her take on things as she proves to be quite adept as a detective. We first met Jessie in Dead Girl Walking, the first book in this engaging series. As a resident in a small town near Boston, I loved reading about familiar locations as the story progressed. I am eager to read more in this exciting series.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

I have not read the first part of this series yet, but I had no problem in getting the feel of the atmosphere.

I like books where the police team is in the picture, but I also like it when the police works together with a civilian such as a psychologist or a doctor. The author chose a nurse working in ER, Jessie Novak.

They are working closely together, but they don’t always see eye to eye. The police follows one thread. Jessie is convinced that’s not the way to go. Who is right? Who cracks the case open?

Jessie is a great character. She has a big heart and everybody likes her. Except for the bad guys of course when they believe she is on to them. She is not easily scared and if she is, she does not show it. She has one goal and one goal only: putting the baddies where they belong for a very long time.

Jessie’s head is not only filled with the case, but her private life is keeping her busy too. Is she dealing with someone genuine or with a fraud?

I enjoyed this story a lot. There was someone I did not quite trust from the moment I met them, but was my feeling spot on this time or was I wrong once again?

Looking forward to see what happens next. 5 stars

Thank you, Roberta Gately and Bookouture

What an intriguing premise. I have to google now if there is such a position in the real world. Boom - right out of the gate we have action. Twists, turns, mystery, intrigue. Loved it all. The reason it wasn't a 5 is Kate. Just so beyond the norm - she didn't fit, stood out, and you knew than something was off. The rest was great. I love seeing how Jessies brain works. As this book is from Jessies point of view you are seeing the clues and putting the pieces together with her. My heart broke with the loss of someone. Sam our detective shows some charming vulnerability and Rufus just knocked it out of the park. Some interesting info come to light that really turns Jessies world upside down and opens so many new possibilities. I did not read book 1 and was still able to enjoy The Frozen Girl without feeling lost. I am definitely curious to see where we go from here. Thank you Bookouture for allowing NetGalley to share this arc with me. I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions.

This is a great read. For me, it was better than the first book.
Jessie is asked to help Sam and the team after a woman’s body is found. She attends the autopsy and is keen to help find the killer.
When it transpires the woman was her old manager, she’s no longer allowed to be part of the investigation. She didn’t recognise her at the autopsy due to the body being in water for so long.
Jessie is eventually allowed back on the case and discovers some worrying emails in Sheila’s office.
She starts to put it all together and someone seems to be watching her.
Jessie is unaware but she is in danger and soon a victim in a hit and run.
I loved the way all the pieces came together and loved the ending.
A great series that I can’t wait to read more of.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

I’m really enjoying this series. It’s interesting and different having an ER nurse helping solve crimes. Jessie Novak often finds herself in the middle of a mess. And I really like Sam. I’m looking forward to the next book.

The second book of Jessie Novak series, though this is the first book I have read from the author. Jessie was given a chance to work at the ME office and dividing her shifts with the ER. So when a frozen body of a woman was brought in at ME's office, the body was recognized as that of Sheila Logan, a colleague of Jessie and who Jessie really didn't get along. Due to the fact that she knows the victim, she was asked to return back to ER but becomes involved with the investigation...

This was OK thriller to me--not much OMG moments or page turning effect. It was a bit boring to me though towards the end, the story got interesting in the end. Jessie is a likable character in my opinion and the author's writing was OK. Not much of twists and turns that will hook you to the story but nevertheless, an OK thriller.

Worth three stars! Thank You Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only.

I loved this authors first book in the series, Dead Girl Walking so seeing this on NetGalley I requested it straight away.

Unfortunately it didn’t quite live up to my expectations. I don’t like giving negative feedback so I’m hoping this comes across as positive criticism.

I felt some of the dialogue was a little clumsy as character names were used a lot during the conversations causing interruption to the flow, which took my focus away of what was being said which to me isn’t true to real life. It felt a little forced.

Working with police in a homecide unit, and two separate characters leaking elements of the case was a huge break of confidentiality which for me was unbelievable. Having read so many police procedural, thrillers and crime novels, I have plenty to compare to which I feel is why I picked up on some of these elements.

Now to what I loved. The second parallel storyline with the woman Jessie meets in the first third of the book. This had important elements to move the series forward. These were well written, emotional and relevant and I did enjoy these parts. I’m looking forward to seeing how this moves forward.

The overall storyline was great! The element with the main character being a nurse helping the police is certainly unique and is one of the things I love about the series.

I liked how the case evolved. Thr ending didn’t quite go the way I expected so that was a welcome surprise.

This certainly was a good novel, but for me a little too slack in terms of how I perceive police investigations to be done. If you’ve read book one you are likely to enjoy this too. Even though there were elements I didn’t enjoy, I am still looking forward to reading book three to see how character relationships grow.

The frozen girl was the second book that I’ve read by the author. It’s as intriguing as the first one and the mysteries and story overall kept me guessing what actually happened there throughout the book.
It was interesting to see more of Jessie’s personal life and love interest interactions. I love when a character is honest and while she haven’t liked her nurse colleague , still goes on the hunt for her killer.
There are so many twists and turns here that I haven’t predicted and that’s what makes a great story for me.
Another must read crime police procedural investigation for the lovers of the genre.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'The Frozen Girl' by Roberta Gately.

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Roberta Gately, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous.

Publication date 18th May 2021.

This is the first book I have read by this author. It is also the second book in the 'Jessie Novak' series but can be read as a standalone.

I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis. It also stated in the synopsis that 'Fans of Lisa Regan, Rachel Abbott and Tess Gerritsen will be totally hooked until the last heart-thumping page'. I am a huge fan of Lisa and Tess so am looking forward to see if it lives up to this. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of a prologue and 49 chapters. The chapters are medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is based in Massachusetts, USA 🇺🇸.

This book is written in third person perspective with the main protagonist being Jessie Novak. The benefits of third person perspective especially with are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.

This book is well written with good descriptions to help the reader imagine what is going on to the point where u could feel the cold of the snow. The synopsis and cover worked well with the storyline.

The storyline was unique in the fact that not only is Jessie a nurse but she's also working with the police so you get the benefit of seeing both the medical and police side of things. It is quite fast paced with lots going on to keep the reader absorbed throughout. I cannot say I was surprised when it came to the end which was a shame but I figured something wasn't right with a certain character from pretty much the start. However, please don't let this out you off as I read several crime novels a week and get pretty suspicious pretty quickly!! I was devastated by a certain evet and feel alot of readers will feel the same. Although I wasn't shocked I still enjoyed reading this book and do believe Roberta did alot of medical research which is great to see so congratulations Roberta as several authors don't do their research which can spoil a storyline. There is alot of suspense filled momenta in the book and I was on the edge of my seat on severs occasions. I also love the fact that all medical and police terminology were explained in Layman's terms. Although this is the second book in the series I easily read it as a standalone and didn't feel that I was missing any important information given in the first book.

The characters were realistic and strong and I really enjoyed getting to know Jessie and Sam's characters and watching their relationship develop. It will be interesting to see what happens with them in the next book in this series. I also really enjoyed getting to know Roger , Tony, Donna. Eddie and Rufus who all stood out for me, each their their own unique and likeable personalities.

Overall an intriguing crime thriller novel with the perfect mix of police and medical scenes.

Genres covered in this book include Thriller, Mystery, Romance Novel, Suspense, Noir Fiction, Psychological Fiction, Police Procedural, Urban Fiction, Crime Fiction, Medical Thriller and Medical Fiction amongst others.

I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of Rachel Abbott

317 pages.

This book is just 99p to purchase on kindle via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

Rated 4 /5 (I enjoyed it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

Roberta Gately (https://robertagately.com) is the author of more than a half dozen novels. _The Frozen Girl _ was published in 2021 and is the second novel in her Jessie Novak series. It is the 23rd book I completed reading in 2024.

I received an ARC of this book through https://www.netgalley.com with the expectation of a fair and honest review. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own! Due to scenes of violence, I categorize this novel as R.

The young 27-year-old Jessie Novak is only 5' 3", but she has established herself as a respected ER nurse at Boston City Hospital (BCH). She recently began working part-time with the Boston Police as a forensic nurse. At first, she meets resistance from some of the police. But after she is involved with the care of Danny Coyle, a police officer shot during a routine traffic stop, she is accepted as one of the team.

The body of a dead woman is pulled from the Neponset River. At police headquarters, Novak gets to see evidence found on the body. That is when she realizes that she used to work with the dead woman. Sheila Logan had been a nurse supervisor at BCH until she had disappeared months earlier.

At first, Novak is excluded from the investigation because of her connection with Logan. That does not stop her from investigating some on her own. She learns that Logan had been having an affair with a BCH surgeon Dr. Tim Merrick. Novak also uncovers what appears to be evidence of financial fraud. Eventually, Novak is brought back into the police investigation. In a national database, they find a West Virginia nurse who had been strangled and dumped in the Blackwater River. The crimes are similar but there is nothing to tie them together.

A few other things are complicating Novak’s life. There is a budding romance between her and Detective Sam Dallas who is leading the murder investigation. A woman claiming to be Novak’s mother shows up on her doorstep. Novak thought her mother had abandoned her. The woman’s story is far different from the one her father had told her. A travel nurse, Kate Wagner, was hired to help fill in at the ER when Novak is working with the police. While the woman has good recommendations, Novak is having to train her on the job.

The deeper Novak digs into the murder, the more she thinks there is to it. Before long her interest in the case comes to the attention of the killer. Novak finds herself in more than one dangerous situation. Will she survive long enough to bring the killer to justice?

I enjoyed the 7.5 hours I spent reading this 252-page mystery. This was a good, but not outstanding novel. I like the chosen cover art. I give this novel a rating of 4 out of 5.

This review was originally posted on Star Crossed Reviews I received this book for free from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to Bookouture for my copy of this book via Netgalley and for letting me take part in this tour. I really enjoyed the first book in this series so I was eager to see what Jessie got herself caught up in this time.

Jessie is one of those people who loves to dig and dig until the truth is revealed no matter how ugly it is. This is an excellent skill for her new role. Jessie isn't one to sit on her laurels and let other people do the work. It's a pretty admiral quality to have if a little dangerous at times. I like Jessie, she's caring and has guts.

The case itself was quite the mystery with every lead giving you more questions than answers. Jessie however was not going to give up. Roberta kept me intrigued throughout. I read this book in two big sittings as I just couldn't put it down. The chapters are a good size that you can easily say oh just one more over and over, before you know it you've read half the book.

Roberta really got all of my emotions running in this book. In the first few chapters, I was wiping away the tears which I did not expect to happen so early on. There were also a few scenes where I knew what was going to happen and I was powerless to stop them. Like a car crash happening in slow motion and you can do absolutely nothing. They were important scenes but man, they were difficult to read.

This book is a great police procedural with a difference. I love seeing the medical side of things. I am a huge lover of medical dramas and any crossovers with police or fire are high up on my list.

Jessie Novak is an ER nurse working in liaison with the police. A body is found with a link to the hospital and Jessie is determined to find the killer but uncovers a host of personal and professional secrets along the way...
The Frozen Girl is the second book to feature Jessie but it is the first that I have read. There are no spoilers about events in the last book.
I loved the beginning of the book with the garbled and hesitant 911 call. As someone who has never needed to call emergency services, this felt very realistic! We then get into a dramatic scene in the emergency room where Jessie shines, and then the murder takes priority. There is some forensic detail of the autopsy but it is objective rather than grisly.
Jessie had an antagonistic relationship with the victim but is shocked to find herself a suspect as well as investigating the case. She is also uncertain in her new role liaising with the police, especially as the lead officer is giving her mixed signals.
Jessie also has issues in her private life in the form of her mother who turns up after abandoning her as a child. This, combined with the romantic tension, adds a more emotional tone to the book and makes her more engaging as a character.
The murder case itself is dominated by the hunt for the killer and the danger to Jessie which ensues. Evidence seems to point in one direction but Jessie is adamant that the police are being misdirected by the real killer.
The Frozen Girl is an engaging police thriller with a personable lead character, and I'll be off to search out the first book in the series!

First, I want to thank Roberta Gately, Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.

Roberta Gately is back with her second installment of her Jessie Novak series entitled The Frozen Girl! Oh how I loved how fast paced this book was. The Frozen Girl combined my two loves of all things medical and criminal into one book.

This book is dedicated to Roberta’s twin sister, Susan Richard, who has nurtured her, listened to her, and taken care of her since before she was born. She can’t imagine her life without her by her side.

Roberta hooks us into her prologue with such an unbelievable sickening scene that would scare the living daylights out of me!!

Oh I am craving pizza like crazy now and must go get some! Roberta mentions pizza a lot in this book.

I love how the motto Boston Strong is used in this book.

Having worked in the medical field as a Medical Assistant I was familiar with terms Roberta used like EMR. Infact, I used the EPIC system that was mentioned in the story.

The story that pulled hard on my heartstrings in so many directions was Jessie and her Mom. What an emotional story that you just couldn’t help feel empathy for both of them.

The Frozen Girl is the second book in the series with ER Nurse Jessie Novak and Detective Sam Dallas as primary characters. While I did not know that when I started the book it became apparent throughout that this was the follow up story. It could easily be a stand alone read. The book is an easy read that kept you wanting to read more.

Jessie is a ER nurse at a hospital in the Boston Area completing her shift before she starts her new position as a liaison with Boston Police Department. A body is pulled out of the Neponset river and sent for autopsy which Jessie is attending. Detective Sam Dallas shows her the multi-colored silk scarf that had been wrapped tightly around Jane Doe’s neck as well as a black pearl necklace. Immediately, Jessie recognizes them as belonging to her old boss at the hospital. Removed from the case due to being a person of interest Jessie is determined to conduct her own investigation. Jessie, due to her position at the hospital, will be able to gather clues that might not have been discovered by the police.

"The Frozen Girl" is a little upbeat, solely due to the very likeable characters and their relationships.

I received an advance copy from NetGalley for an unbiased review.

'The frozen Girl by Roberta Gately is a thrilling who dunnit that will keep you interested till the very end.

Jessie Novak is an ER nurse who also works with the police to help solve crimes or bring a medical perspective to it, like a liasion. She is smart, self driven and has passion for the truth. Her nursing managar has been missing since a few months and suddenly one fine day she gets called to see an autopsy of a deadbody of a girl found frozen in a lake. After the autopsy she realises that it was her nursing manager and then begins her journey to understand why she was killed and you will need to read the story to get there,

I loved Jessie Novak's character, almost self made, headstrong yet kind and compassionate. Her chemistry with Sam in the police force is very sweet. Her passion for the truth and her heart in being an ER is very visible. Loved her relationship with Rus, her neighbour and Eddie , the homeless man. She also has a smartness to get to the truth.
If you love stories where layer by layer the protagonist come to the truth, then you will love this story
I thank Bookouture, Netgalley and the author for accepting my request to review the story. The opinions expressed are all mine.

I really loved this book! While I haven't read book 1 in this series I had no problem following what was going on. (and I will be reading that one soon) I love both Jessie and Sam.. Iam really loving whole nurse helping the police solving homicide thing. They mystery was really good, I had who was behind everything until the very end when everything was revealed.. Jessie is working as an ER nurse, she is also starting a job working with homicide and the MEs office. When the first body she helps with ends up actually ends up being her boss that had been missing for a few months.. Of course at first she is a suspect, or at the very least a person of interest, when she is finally cleared and able to help the police again she dives right in and ends up putting herself in danger as she uncovers evidence in the case.
Sam is the homicde detective working with Jessie, they have a bit of a past that Im looking forward to seeing some of in the first book. They make a really cute couple. The story moves along really quickly and I couldn't put it down..
I look forward to reading the first book, and more books in this series.

Jesse is an ER nurse that will rotate in and be a liaison from the morgue to the police department. She’s devoted and good at her job. She ends up caught in the middle when a body found by the river turns out to be her missing boss that she didn’t get along with.

I didn’t read the first book in the series, but it didn’t hold me back from enjoying this book. Jesse has such heart and you can’t help but root for her. She is very likable.

This book has a little of everything. The police solving a crime, multiple suspects, a little romance, friendship, a mother back from the abyss, and twists and turns. I like that this book was a little chatty, meaning there was a lot of conversations between the characters. You don’t just watch it unfold, but feel in the middle of it.

I read so many crime and mysteries that I’m quite good at figuring things out and while I knew a small piece, the author kept me guessing until the end and I suspected most of the characters at one point.

I really think crime lovers will love this book!

This is the second book in the series featuring Jessie Novak. I hadn’t read the first book but this was fine as a stand-alone. Jessie is an ER Nurse at a Boston hospital but also assists as a liaison officer between the police, medical officer and the victim. When the frozen body of a woman is found in the river Jessie is shocked to discover that it is the body of Sheila Logan, her old boss at the hospital who has been missing for a few months. Jessie had a difficult relationship with Sheila and finds herself a suspect. She wants justice for her former colleague and starts to uncover evidence when she finds some emails in Sheila’s office. But someone is watching her and her life is soon in danger. We learn about Jessie’s background, how her mother had left her a as a baby and how the relationship between her and Sam, her leading officer develops. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to the next book in the series.

I liked that Jessie was a nurse and as well as working in the ER, she was working with the police. That would be very interesting, I think. I didn't read the first book in the series but this book can easily be read as a standalone.

The character of Kate was a strange one. A nurse who didn't seem to know what she was doing, and even accounting for the fact that she was supposedly a new grad, she was particularly inept. She also swung between being innocent and clueless and having a hard edge. The characterisation here felt off to me.

I also have a bit of an issue with the frozen girl herself. This is Jessie's boss, senior management, so I am thinking she is in no way a girl and I also had a hard time visualising her, in terms of her physical self and/or age range.

This story had a lot of good ideas and the bones of it were really good but the execution was a bit clumsy to me.

3.5 stars from me. Sorry :(

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture.

I read the first book in this new series and instantly felt a strong liking for Jessie. She has some courage that is for sure. And she certainly seems to get herself tangled in a case even if she shouldn't. I love the dynamic between Jessie and Sam, it such a lovely budding friendship and I cant wait to see what else they overcome individually and together. The case that Jessie faces this time, after becoming fully involved with Homicide and the ME office, is one that was a little bit close to home for Jessie. So it was lovely to see another side of her rather than the tough exterior. I am really looking forward to reading more in this series, and cant wait to find out more about the characters, especially Sam!

I couldn’t believe it could happen but I loved reading Roberta Gately’s 2nd book in the 3 part series Frozen Girl even more than her 1st book Dead Girl Walking. It pulls you in from the very beginning. It has so many twists and turns I was on the edge of my seat until the end. I love the interaction between Jessie Novak and the other nurses, the medical examiners and the police especially with Detective Sam Dallas. Like my review with Dead Girl Walking Jessie Novak doesn’t settle for the easy answers in the criminal investigation; she keeps digging until she’s uncovered all the information. I enjoyed it so much I didn’t want it to end. I thoroughly enjoyed Frozen Girl but I felt like I was losing a friend when I closed the last page.

Another gripping mystery in the Jessie Novak series. Set in Boston, Jessie is an ER nurse who also helps the homicide division with murder investigations. There's even the promise of romance in Jessie's future. As the author is a nurse, the hospital scenes are authentic and immersive. This second instalment is compulsively readable with a white-knuckle ending. Roberta Gately has fast become one of my must-read authors.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this book.

I didn’t realise that this was number two in a series but it didn’t matter a jot as it was still a great read. Great premise to have an ER nurse work with detectives and a great frisson of attraction between Jessie and Sam.
When a body is given up by the thaw Jessie is appalled to discover it’s her ex colleague who went missing. This is a fast paced read that kept me turning the pages, I may have missed the first one but I won’t miss out on the third. This is a series I’ll definitely want to keep up with

This was a really easy and enjoyable read. I like the main character of Jessie and the dynamics between her and Sam, a detective. Characterisation is good and there's a nice relationship brewing there! An interesting plot for this one and a good steady pace throughout. Jessie does get very involved in the cases with the ME and Homicide but this one is a bit too close to home. Overall, a good rad and I look forward to the follow up. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
