A Tale of A Thousand Stars

Rate this book
If one of the thousand wishes amidst the shimmering stars could come true... My only wish is to be by his side. Forever and always. It is the last sentence in the pastel diary that drives Thien on his journey to become a volunteer teacher on a hill to fulfill her last wish. In a world unbeknownst to him, he begins to recognize his self-worth and the true meaning of giving without expecting anything in return. There, he meets Captain Phupha, and their intimacy blossoms into a tie within the embrace of the beautiful mountain ranges in the northernmost part of Thailand. Thien's heart is filled with the memories of the tall officer to the brim until he becomes confused as to whom the feelings really belong to. Are they his feelings or are they someone else's? As their love stands against the test of time, will they make it through? Or perhaps they have to wish upon the thousand stars for the promise they've made to come true?

Finally after struggling for quite a while, I managed to get my hands on a copy of this. I maybe slightly biased in this review as I am simply in love with the whole setting of the book and also because I am irrevocably fallen in love with the TV adaptation of this one.

First of all as many know, that I have been reveiwwing many LGBTQ+ novels the past few months and among them Asian translations have been in the majority. Mainly the reason being that I want to open a platform for other readers around the world to see the beauty of Asian literature and also to promote LGBTQ+ within our community. As an Asian myself I do know the troubles I have seen of those within the said community struggling with in our somewhat conservative society. Unfortunately in terms of Thai LGBTQ+ novels, many of them tend to go in the same path of university and engineering (it's a running joke within the fans that Engineering students are always the ones caught in this forbidden love.) so the fans of these are frustrated and hoping for a different settings. 2021 has been the year which LGBTQ+ dramas seem to be tipping their toes in these waters. We have many dramas lined up that do not follow the typical cliché plots. A Tale of Thousand Stars or 1000 Stars as it is now promoted has been highly anticipated due to this. Just like 'I Told Sunset About You' this drama goes beyond the borders of the Bangkok City and gives us the beautiful setting outside in the picturesque villages of Thailand. This has been the number one attraction for this drama and secondly as I have ranting above this drama deviates from the university plot for a certain extent. It doesn't completely surround itself with the blue shirt early 20s boys and girls.

Finally let me talk about the novel plot. This is a very simple novel, with a simple premise. The journey of a rich spoilt boy where he learns that life is not just about riches and the fast life. Another factor that truly manages to highlight the beauty of the novel is how we see, that happiness is not only within the riches. Happiness is when your heart feels light, when you feel comfortable with no heavy burdens. The characters show major development. Despite the short length of the novel, we really do see a large character growth in our main character Tian as he goes from the spoilt youngest son of a high-ranking military officer to a volunteer teacher who manages to touch the hearts and souls of the children of Phun Phan Dao village. Another character that I loved was Captain Phupha. The strict captain with a heart of gold. All of his life he has given for others and even in the end, he selflessly gives up everything. In the end we know that the choice was Tian's. he finally chose to live his OWN life, not the others. We are left with many questions unanswered and I am sure it is further explained in the special book which I have yet to read.

In terms of the ending of the book, it is somewhat quick but I feel like the TV adaptation is taking its time to reach there and further explaining things. Kudos to the cast and crew and the amazing director P'BackAof (Congratulations for him, he finally got engaged to his boyfriend of 16 years. This is a major step in the LGBTQ+ community of Asia after all). They truly had gone through a lot to complete this drama and specially to BacteriaNabu who gave us this amazing novel. It is always heartwarming to watch dramas like this.

I would like all International fans to wait a few more months as the official English Translation is close to being completed. Till then here are some Official Promotional Posters.

Have I mentioned that the setting is just simply beautiful? I think I did about 1000 times.

Told my self that I’ll wait for the TV series to end before I’ll read the novel but since today is the release of the last episode (I want a special episode, GMMTV! 😠), I decided to start this one. Unsurprisingly, I love it! Given how much obsessed I am with the series, it’s not a surprise that I ended up loving the book in which the series is based on. The way the writer fleshed out the characters and how their growth was shown throughout the book amazed me. I don’t tend to like slow burn romance but this one is an exception to that. The pining and the subtle flirting between Phupha and Thien made me grin so much whilst I was reading this.

While I understand that this is a translated book (it’s originally written in Thai language), I still need to point out that the translation could use a bit of an improvement. 😅 But I’m used to reading translated works so it’s fine with me but if you’re someone that isn’t, then here’s a heads up for you.

I enjoyed the novel a little more than the the TV series, there was not that much difference but the pace was better and we get more background story, it also does not have the dramatic Torfun death mystery that they made up for the series, the story didn't need it at all to be honest.

This is a story about a young man that's in need for a heart transplant and after he wakes up from an accident he has a new heart and the donor comes with life purpose that he lacks, from there he's life takes a trun that gives him a reason to live and people that he comes to love.

I picked this book up after loving the GMMTV live adaption of the book on YouTube. After I finished the show, I saw the this book was available on Kindle Unlimited and I had a subscription so I immediately borrowed it and read it and it was a very good decision. If you're a person like me who has watched the drama before reading the book, I would definitely recommend the book. They both follow the main storyline so you can see more of an insight into both Tine and Phupha's thoughts. Plus the book is more R-Rated and there is a steamy scene at the end. The ending is also different from the drama but it's still really good.

If you're a person who has yet to read the book or watch the drama and you're undecided as to which to start first, I would recommend you to watch the drama first. I personally feel like I enjoyed the book more because I loved the drama.

I want to note that the translation of this book is not perfect and can be incorrect at times. An example would be 'she' is written instead of 'he' but I know that is due to the differences in pronoun usage in Thai compared to English. So, the mistakes may put readers off but I think that it didn't really affect the comprehension of the story because as a reader you understood the context.

The plot of this book is really good. I read the first like 50% in one sitting. It was interesting for me to see the relationship develop between Tian and Phupha but also see the differences between the drama and the book. If you're a Longtae lover, I'm afraid that he's hardly in the book and we meet him quite late.

Overall, I highly recommend this book especially if you have watched the drama.

I liked this story. It was charming and both MCs, especially Tian, were lovely. The story had a modern fairytale vibe with Tian’s super rich background, the heart transplant arc and the remote mountain village where thugs took advantage of the poor uneducated ethnic minority. Yes, there were a lot of elements the reader just had to accept and I thought the book laid it on thick.

A huge problem (for me as an English Second Language person) was the translation though. I’m not sure how it came to be. Fact is: the translator(s) seemed to have missed the grammar lessons about pronouns. They were used in the wrong way half of the time either from the gender perspective or when it came to the different pronoun classes (subjective, objective, possessive, determiners - they were all a mess).
As you can imagine this made the beginning of the book hard when I wasn’t sure who talked to whom and tried to gather if said person was male, female or non-binary. And - once I got used to it and tried to ignore it - it still interrupted the reading flow. You know when I finally reached the sexy times and suddenly one male person turned into a she… that was a bit of a turn-off to be honest.

I did enjoy the read but can’t in good conscience give it a higher rating.

At first I want to say that the translation was not the best. There were some a bit confusing moments because of that.

But the story itself was amazing. If you loved the show then you will love the novel too. Not sure which one was better ’cause both were amazing. The slowly developing relationship between Tian and Phupha is just *chefs kiss*.

My outlook on books to screen adaptation is to try to read the source material too. Either before seeing the adaptation or after, I think insight is gained either way.

This one, was like a whole new story. While the adaptation has the core of the story there were a lot of changes from print to screen. Not bad changes, in fact the changes work perfectly fine, but the story is a lot more complex than the screen version.

The events that unfold at Pha Pun Dao are more enjoyable to me in the story than the adaptation. Thien's life learning curve was fleshed out more, the inter action with the children (more than the 5 in the adaptation), the fire, the smugglers, this filled in gaps in the story I didn't realize were missing until I read the book.

I must say I don't really like Thien's sister (the mother didn't only spoil one child), and the mother comes off as overbearing and I think I don't like her either.

The father, while over protective, is in the end at least supportive.

What can I say about this one? More than a storyline of romantic love it's a story of love without borders. I love how Tian's journey takes him to discover the many faces love can have. What amazes me the most is the growth he had and how the love he found for his own life made him a better person, that as a result, discovers strength and many other beautiful things inside him. As of Phupa, God, I wanted to hug him most of the time because he was able to sacrifice his life and everything else in the name of his community and his peers. This novel is endearing and the views I got from Northern Thailand and their traditions were amazing. Above all, I've always loved the stories about stars and this tale of a thousand stars will remain lighting my life up always. I just love this one so much 💖

Gave up on it. The english translation is kind of weird but understandable however the main reason that after i read 7% i did not get hooked up on the story yet. But do not take it as antirecommendation, i think it is just not my cup of tea.
The story is about a young man who had a heart transplant surgery and got a chance to have a new life. But the person whose heart he now has was killed in a road traffic accident and their identity is a not known.
I learnt that ppl with transplanted organs have to take immunosuppressants all their life which lead to poor health, risk of cancer and deterioration of other inner organs and if for e.g. a person got new heart it is highly likely that soon they will need a new kidney as well. This is very sad.
