Black-ops legend Chris Wren has hunted the Blue Fairy for months - a notorious hacker group stalking innocents on the dark Internet. Including his kids.
Now an anti-Blue Fairy activist has been murdered in Detroit, two more have been abducted, and Wren alone knows what it means.
The monsters are crawling out into the light.
As a Blue Fairy army rises and a mass hacking attack threatens to cripple the USA, only brilliant CIA agent Sally Rogers stands at Wren's side, ready to enforce his iron law:
No mercy for the wicked.
The acclaimed Chris Wren novels are each a complete action adventure, and can be read in any order.
Mike Grist is the British/American author of the Christopher Wren and Girl Zero thriller series.
For 11 years Mike lived in Tokyo, Japan, exploring and photographing the dark side of the city and the country: gangs, cults and abandoned places. Now he writes from London, UK, about ex-DELTA operator Christopher Wren - an anti-hero vigilante who brings brutal payback for dark crimes on an unprecedented scale.
Mike also writes science fiction and fantasy as Michael John Grist:
The 1st novel was good, the pace was about right, the characters interesting and with enough positives too outweigh the negatives.
The main protagonist is no Reacher, not be any stretch of the imagination, and any claims to that effect do an injustice to all concerned.
Wren is almost the antithesis of Reacher. He is a cult leader, the exact opposite of a loner in every single aspect.
This novel is a very poor 2nd to that 1st book. Like an image that has been photocopied too many times. Inconsistencies abound. Hypocrisy everywhere supported by lazy writing.
Barely tolerable, totally unbelievable, and not enjoyable.
In the end it is a hard slog to make it through without hurling the book away in disgust.
The end is a sad sordid sorry collection of worn out clichés from every trashy 10c paperback from the 1950's.
This book seemed to start slowly but when it picked up speed it became an out-of-control roller coaster ride from Hades! It actually gave me chills with each new development. I usually try to think ahead of what may happen to see if I am right but that didn't work on this book. I was gobsmacked at every turn and by the end I was cheering Christopher Wren on to total domination and the destruction of all the evil that permeated this book. I was left wrung out. Kudos!
UPDATE! When I first read the book, I gave it a four star rating. Since then, the author has rewritten the entire thing and made improvements. Christopher Wren is no longer the superhuman he once was, which makes the book so much better! Yes, he is a healthy, athletic, extremely capable black ops guy. He can do many things most of us can't. But he is no longer infallible. It lends so much credibility to the story. I am happily changing my four star review to five. Well done, Mike Grist! And this is what I wrote originally....
This story pulled me in right away. The characters are well-developed and often quirky. Wren is pretty much superhuman when it comes to action, and he's tremendously charismatic, having learned a lot from his father who was a cult leader. However, unlike his father, Wren uses his skills to achieve positive goals. His past has also left him emotionally damaged, making him a complex and interesting character to follow. My only reason for not giving this 5 stars is because, for me, some of the action scenes require too much of a suspension of belief. For many readers, that's exactly what makes these books perfect, making it a simple case of not being able to please everyone. So don't let that dissuade you. It doesn't mean I don't enjoy the series - I do! It's a very strong 4 star rating, more like 4.5. I am now off to start reading #3. Actually, I need to wait until morning or I won't bother to go to bed tonight because I'll likely be too engrossed in the book.
I was unsure if I enjoyed the first book in the series and I said would read the second (this book) and then make up my mind.
The bottom line is that I did not like these two books enough to want to carry on reading the rest of the series.
The pace is fast and furious, the story lines frenetic and almost fanciful to the point of not being credible. I did not particularly like the hero Christopher Wren.
But what concerned me most was that details seemed inconsistent. For example, if I remember correctly, Wren visits his family home, a house, to find others living in it. Not long after, that house has become an apartment. Another example is Hellion is described as coming from Belgium; not many pages on and she is described as having a Bulgarian accent.
Now, I must admit, that in itself is not a reason not to continue reading the series. Together with what I found as fanciful not believable cult storylines, has put me off the series, at least for the meantime. Maybe one day I'll give it another go.
A book I couldn’t put down. Think I nearly passed out from holding my breath is several scenes. This is Reacher and Bourne on steroids. And in his book, so much that I could sadly and scarily see happening given our recent political climate.
I would have liked to have seen more of the aftermath of this one, perhaps in the form of an epilogue. The political fallout would have been beyond crazy and it would have made for an interesting read seeing how the author envisioned it playing out. No doubt Fox News would have been fine with everything that happened.
This is the second book in the series about Christopher Wren. Accurate telling of the horrors that evil people do to children. Child abuse is the underlying cause to the story. Fast paced, violent. Attempted take over of our government by many of these evil people. The internet and the dark net are used to the detriment of our way of life. Home grown perverts becoming trained soldiers to execute all authority.
Christopher Wren cannot allow the evil to win.
When I finished this book I was blown away, stunned by the emence scope of the telling. I will take a break before reading book #3. BUT, I will keep reading.
ARC/beta read of a revised edition of the 2019 published version (the ISBN 9781739951122 printed is for a paperback edition from Shotgun Books)
A streamlined narrative that moves with almost breathtaking speed as Wren, accompanied by Sally Rogers (who becomes his moral compass at times), pursues the Blue Fairy organisation (a worldwide conspiracy of paedophiles). The mission is given importance because the group has threatened Wren's own children (who are with his estranged wife) in a message that purports to be from Wren's father, the Apex, the presumed dead former leader of the defunct Pyramid cult...
Mike Grist knocks it out of the park with this second Christopher Wren thriller. I was hooked from the opening lines. I will say that reading the first book will help with the emotional upheaval of this one. There is a twist and potential failure at every corner of this journey. Christopher and his coin folks are amazing and scary all rolled up into one. Nick Cracknell does a stellar job of bringing the emotional and personal and political angst of this book to life. I highly recommend this series. Mike Grist writes incredible dark stuff. If dark isn't up your alley leave this series alone.
This was another cracking read from Mike Grist it kept me up all night finishing it. The suspense in it is palpable and the action is grousome and extremely well written. The subject matter may be a little extreme for some readers but it is so well written and plotted it's hard to put the book down. I thoroughly enjoyed it maybe more than the first book. If you like high octane action thrillers that are superbly written and extremely well plotted and researched then I highly recommend Mike Grist. I am now going to download book three.
Checked out this series after enjoying the Girl Zero series (strongly recommend) had no idea this book would tie into that series. I work with children every day and sadly many turn a blind eye to the billion dollar industry that traffics them. I don't want to spoil it but if you like rough justice - this story could be for you. Chris Wren is the ultimate soldier better even then the famous Reacher character ... Check it out!!!!
I loved how descriptive this book was as I read each scene/chp . It's easy to catch on to where the story picked up from last .Defo read book 1 first as you can understand his "foundation" better as it's a lot more explained in book one on how the coin system works ect. Already downloaded book 3.
Wasn’t as big a fan of this book as the first. He has seemed to underestimate everybody he deals with. I’m not sure why everyone in his “foundation” is so loyal. This coin system doesn’t seem like it’s enough and they don’t really go in to what he does for them, just what they do for him. Part of a 3 book set so I’ll read the 3rd and see if I want to continue.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This book pulls no punches and moved fast but kept me going. It enlightens you to more of the Wren story and this is best explained in the final bloody chapters. Looking forward to book three.
While this is a work of fiction, human trafficking is still a world wide scourge. There are thousands of children that need rescued and their abusers killed. No trial. No jury.
Wasn't sure if I was going to like this book but I did. Its frightening that something like this could happen. Fast pacing book, lots if killing of innocent people from a power hungry group.
Christopher Wren.....ghost, avenging angel, or Saint Payback? Either way you don't want on his bad side. Some people will find redemption with him.... Others HELL. Great series A must read that once started you can't put down. Like Jack Ryan meets Avenging Angel
A different take of a cult with the power to control no people lived but one man thought differently and wanted things to be as they should be freedom of expression and to be who and what ever they wanted to be.
Some may surrender and accept the deal with the devil when they feel trapped into accepting pain for others to avoid pain for theirs. Chris Wren is not one of the some...and the bad guys will pay.
The action, the emotional turmoil, the fear, the seemingly impossible task… This is a wonderfully complex and beautiful story of the exorcising of personal demons and true evil. I can’t wait to read the next.
My second book in the series and my second by Mike Grist and I really love the series and Character
My second book from Mike Grist and I really enjoy the characters and fast paced storyline. I couldn't put the book down. Can't wait to start the next book.
I'm amazed that this author can write so many fantastic novels, I hope that he never stops writing. His books are some of the best Entertainment I have read and worth the time to read them. Thank you for a very fun entertaining read.
