The acclaimed Chris Wren novels are each a complete action adventure, and can be read in any order.
Mike Grist is the British/American author of the Christopher Wren and Girl Zero thriller series.
For 11 years Mike lived in Tokyo, Japan, exploring and photographing the dark side of the city and the country: gangs, cults and abandoned places. Now he writes from London, UK, about ex-DELTA operator Christopher Wren - an anti-hero vigilante who brings brutal payback for dark crimes on an unprecedented scale.
Mike also writes science fiction and fantasy as Michael John Grist:
I can't get enough of Christopher Wren! I enjoyed the book very much and wanted to keep reading until I was done (although I had to keep stopping to do other stuff, which was a bummer). This is one of my favorite series. It’s a great bit of escapism. There seems to be more of an open ending on this book than prior ones in the series, but not really a cliffhanger. Just maybe a few more loose ends, so there is plenty to pick up on in the next installation. If you've read this far in the series, clearly the author doesn't have to "hook" you into reading the next! I’m already looking forward to the next one. I thought there were some things that were over-the-top, but in this case I felt like it worked. In a world where such crazy things are happening, anything 100% believable or even possible, is even scarier than it would have been just a few years ago. Still, there were times when I hoped our “leaders” didn’t read this book to get ideas. I highly recommend the book, and the entire series. Best if you start from the beginning - why deny yourself? - but I think there is enough filled in that you could pick up a later book and not be lost.
Full disclosure: I read the book ahead of publication as part of the ARC Team, but I am giving my honest opinion.
Christopher Can't Seem To Get To His Father To Bring Him Down
While this book has been a thrill to read there is an aspect about it that makes it a drudge to read. For five books now Christopher Wren has been fighting a losing battle against the father he presumed dead. And for those five books he has come up short every time. I know that this is an unreasonable expectation since even series have a common enemy and lead but this one is long in the tooth and getting ordinary, to a small degree. That isn't to say I don't like the book, I do. It has tons of action, developed and nuanced characters. The depth of the plot is mesmerizing and the details are sufficient to place the reader dead in the center of the action. But c'mon, Mike, get to the meat and make the Apex pay!
Mike has done it again with this intense book of indoctrination, manipulation and fear. Christopher has to face many challenges in his pursuit of the Apex but can he get there in time or will the Apex get him?
There is so much action and suspense in this book, that, at times, I found myself holding my breath and flicking through the pages, to find out what happened next! I didn't want the book to end.
This amazing story links directly to Christopher's past with dire consequences - I was left gobsmacked many times!
Great series and so it continues!
I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Followers of this series will know that this is not a 'comfort' read! At the end of Book 4 a new president-elect acknowledges Wren's past activities in combatting the increasingly violent and shocking attacks on the US way of life - and Wren recognises a face from his past on the stage with the new 'saviour of America'.
This new volume picks up from there - as Wren follows clues to yet another attack, part of which is targetted at Wren himself by someone who has an intimate knowledge of his life. Elements of the plot seem to eerily reflect current events in a twisted mirror of our reality, events that a few years ago would probably have been ridiculed as too far-fetched, if not actually impossible. Once again this author has managed to wind up the tension with a tangled narrative that in hindsight makes absolute sense - and climaxes in a shocking event that I didn't anticipate but which, again, I should have seen coming.
A triumph - not an easy read, certainly. Life isn't always 'easy', of course. I'd strongly suggest that if you are new to this series you go back to the beginning and work through from there.
Yet another great storyline that grabs you from the first page to the last. The author has introduced the reader to a world where people have no worth and are brainwashed into doing unspeakable things just to satisfy the requirements of a cult and it's leaders sick perversions, the heroic efforts of Christopher Wren and his allies to stop the carnage ends with them being called terrorists while they are actually the peoples only hope to end the pain and suffering.
Left me hungering for more each book gets better. Now like the SO_ George RR Martin he leaves us waiting for the book…..Hope he keeps writing…. A thrilling character. Sally Rogers is the perfect mate for Christopher “ Big, Bad, Bird, Wren! Plagiarized WEB Griffin for that nick name. I hope The author Mr. Gist is half as prolific as WEB Griffin (RIP).
Nonstop action but you already knew that. Apex's main goal is to have the country see Wren as a terrorist. He doesn't mind creating a firestorm in order to do this. His Foundation no longer thinks he is guilty of mass murders and now he has Sally Rogers for a partner. What could go wrong? There are many unexpected surprises.
Best book of the series so far. The author is evolving in that the procrastinator does appear as a real human as he believably reacts to serious wounds both physical and emotional. And, as they say, the plot thickens. I look forward to the next book
I'm amazed that this author can write so many fantastic novels, I hope that he never stops writing. His books are some of the best Entertainment I have read and worth the time to read them. Thank you for a very fun entertaining read.
Ok, these are my first reactions, this could well be the best Wren yet. You may not agree but that’s how I saw it. About half of the way through I was totally and completely hooked, engrossed and all the things you would expect. Just could not put it down right up to to an ending I didn’t see coming. What on earth is going to happen in the next one. Highly recommended.
