When murder turns out to be the special of the day at her friend’s seafood restaurant, bicycle shop owner Mackenzie “Mac” Almeida and her fellow book club sleuths have to net a killer...
From clam chowdahs to oysters on the half-shell, Tulia Peters’ Lobstah Shack offers locals and tourists in Westham, Massachusetts, some of Cape Cod’s most amazing cuisine. But when the body of Annette DiCicero is discovered in the kitchen’s walk-in freezer—with a custom-made claw-handled lobster pick lodged in her neck—spoiled appetites are the least of Tulia’s worries.
After a heated public argument with Annette, Tulia is a person of interest in the police’s homicide investigation. To clear Tulia’s name, Mac and the Cozy Capers Book Group snoop into Annette’s personal life. Between her temperamental husband, his shady business partner, and two women tied to Annette’s past life as “Miss New Bedford”, there are now several suspects and multiple motives. And they’re getting crabby about Mac intruding on their affairs...

Murder at the Lobstah Shack is the 3rd book in the Cozy Capers Book Group Mysteries written by Maddie Day. I've previously read the first two books in this series, but I haven't read the author's other series or the books she's written under the name Edith Maxwell. I will in the future, though, because they are great fun. In this latest installment, Mac finds a dead body on the first page. Well... her friend, Tulia, at the lobster restaurant does, and she begs Mac to help. Only this time, when they realize who is dead, it looks like Tulia could've been the killer!
The series takes place in a small town on the coast of Massachusetts, where Mac's family, friends, and boyfriend are her closest confidants and murder mystery helpers; they even have a group book club that helps, including a former police chief. We visit the world of beauty pageants and homeless camps in this tale, and we also have a few nods to Barbara Ross's book, Fogged Off, where they also find a dead body in a freezer. Not a bad way to go, except in this case, the body wasn't frozen to death. Someone, perhaps 2 people, had reason to kill the woman. Which one did it?
Day's work keeps me entertained. this mystery had a good plotline, and it also advanced the story for several supporting characters, including a big leap forward for Mac. I like visiting the cozy towns and learning all about the various families and residents. I am now caught up in this series, so I will look to start another of the author's in early 2022.
This is book 3 in the Cozy Capers Book Group Mystery series. I’ve read one of the others and missing one didn’t hurt my following or enjoying this one. Mac runs a bike shop and when her shop’s neighbor who runs a seafood restaurant calls in a panic she goes to help. They are both shocked to find a dead body in the walk in freezer. Mac and her cozy reading club take on the case, but as they ask more questions they find defensive responses. And the murder has some peculiarities like a lack of blood despite the victim being stabbed by an implement from the lobster shack. The mystery was good and full of twists and turns. The characters are fun and my favorite is Mac’s pet parrot.
A perplexing murder in a small seaside town in Cape Cod spurs the Cozy Capers Book Club into sleuthing mode, once again. Protagonist Mac Almeida is stuck in the middle of a crime scene when her friend, Tulia, owner of Tulia’s Lobstah Shack, finds a corpse in her restaurant. The eclectic Cozy Capers members network together seeking information, then sift all the observations and tips together to solve this savory cozy mystery.
I enjoyed re-visiting the feisty cast of characters in “Murder at the Lobstah Shack”. Author Maddie Day writes short chapters which make the story move swiftly. There are a couple of prime suspects who stood out to me, and a reasonable conclusion and sum-up of motive, means, and opportunity complete the story. Delicious recipes included.
I honestly reviewed a digital arc provided by NetGalley and Kensington Publishing. All opinions are my own. Thank you.
I was disappointed with this one and this book will be the last one in the series. When a dead body is found in her friend, Tulia's Lobstah Shack, Mac is immediately worried because the victim and Tulia were heard arguing about changing the name of Columbus Day to Indigenous People Day? As if this particular argument is reason to murder anyone, let alone a young mother. Too much political silliness was sprinkled around the story, completely unnecessary. Also, the author introduces a new police officer with dark, Asian looking eyes named Officer Kimuri who is dispatched to the murder scene in the beginning of the book. Why on earth would you need to describe her eyes? This officer is not even heard from again until the end of the book and is not important to the story. Scratching my head and rolling my eyes at the same time.
Mac's bike shop is in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and she is shocked when her neighbor and friend calls from the nearby Lobstah Shack in a panic to say that there's a dead woman in the walk in refrigerator. Her book group, which reads and discusses mystery novels, has apparently gotten involved in cases before, which the police seem to mostly accept, though not officially, of course. This is the third in a series, but I was able to read it as a stand alone. There are quite a few people in town that Mac suspects could be the murderer, and she really does not play it safe as everyone urges her to. My favorite character was Mac's talking parrot, Bella. Recipes are included. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.
I loved the first book in this series - absolutely loved it. The characters were fun and quirky, the MC was engaging and believable and then there was Belle, the African Parrot, who was so hilarious. It was one of the best cozy reads I had read in a long time. Then the second book happened and I was so disappointed. I won't rehash it here, but NO ONE should ever force someone into a decision they aren't comfortable with [especially when it concerns children] and no one should SHAME ANYONE for not having the same dreams as they do. Mac and Tim should have broken up then; clearly they are not on the same page.
I had hoped that this book would redeem what happened in book 2. My hopes were dashed and I was left disappointed and frustrated and I know that I will not be reading anymore in this series. There was just way too much that was wrong with this book.
1. The description of a character as someone with "Asian-looking eyes". Uh, really? Insensitive much? Especially with all that is going on around the Asian culture? This, to me, was extremely bad form and since it happens early on in the book, it left a bad taste in my mouth for the rest of the read.
2. The complete brush off of the Pandemic. It is mentioned in a laughing, "aren't we glad THAT is over" kind of way. Uh, way. too. soon. People are still dying, we are still in the grips of serious waves and that was tone-deaf at best and completely disrespectful of the 750,000+ people who have died at the hand of this Pandemic.
3. Mac's main concern being that she should start trying to get pregnant as that is the expected outcome of her getting married to Tim. Ummm....R E A L L Y?? So this is going to continue. What if she cannot get pregnant? Will Tim leave her? They are basing this marriage all on Tim's wants and needs and I can tell you right now, it. will. not. last. It is so disheartening to watch a really strong character succumb to shaming and pressure.
4. Mac all of the sudden disregarding her beloved grandmother - running after a murderer [which I need to remind everyone, is not her ACTUAL job] was way more important. Look, I like Mac [which is why the downhill slide of these books has been so acutely disappointing] and I empathize with her - she has a huge heart and just wants to help everyone. Plus she is a nosey parker and I get that too [being one myself]. BUT!!! she loves her family without reserve and her disregarding her grandmother, whom she loves more than life, is completely out of character and really grated on me.
5. The story itself. I knew the what in the first couple of chapters. I knew the who as soon as they were introduced and I knew the why almost at the same time. It really just felt like a lazy book to me and I was so frustrated by the whole story and the end and everything that was in between. WHERE are the glorious characters from the first book?? Sigh.
Overall, this was a huge disappointment to me and I really do not think I will be reading anymore, especially since it seems that Mac is going to give into pressure and shaming over getting married and having kids. It is so disrespectful and very tone-deaf [AGAIN] of marriage and kids and the fact that some people just don't want either and that shaming someone into one or both is horribly, horribly, wrong.
Thank you to NetGalley, Maddie Day, and Kensington Books for providing this ARC in exchange for a honest review.
Westham Massachusetts may be a quaint New England town, but is sure has it's share of murders to go around. Murder at the Lobstah Shack is the third installment in Ms. Day's entertaining Cozy Capers Book Mystery series. Mac Almeida receives a call early one morning from a fellow business owner and member of the Cozy Capers Book club that starts this book off and running. Tulia Peters discovers a body in her cooler with evidence that incriminates her in the murder. Mac and the rest of the Cozy Caper's book club join forces once again to work with the local police to provide them clues to help solve the murder and exonerate their friend. I think Ms. Day has crafted a set of characters that has someone for everyone. I enjoy the relationship Mac and her family have. It is loving and supportive.
Ms. Day has written a well plotted mystery that moves along nicely. There are several "prime" suspects and the reader has to carefully sift through the clues to reach their conclusion. Once again, Mac finds herself on the wrong side of a murderer when the killer's identity is revealed. Ms. Day wraps up the mystery nicely and the killer is very plausible as is the motive behind the murder.
I enjoy this author's writing style. The book moves along at a good pace, the characters are interesting and diverse and the mystery kept me guessing.
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy provided to me by the publisher, Kensington, through NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions expressed in my review are my own.
This was a really fun cozy mystery. It was also my introduction to this series, and you will definitely have no issues reading it as a standalone. It was well written and well paced. I loved the setting (Cape Cod). The plot was engaging and full of red herrings that kept me guessing. There is a plethora of likable characters (cute kids, a sassy bird), and a bunch of recipes for all the delicious sounding foods mentioned throughout the story. What more can a reader ask for?
Murder At The Lobstah Shack is the third book in the A Cozy Capers Book Club series by Maddie Day.
Mac MacKenzie is heading for her bike shop when she gets a frantic phone call from Tulia Peters, owner of the Lobstah Shack, and her next-door neighbor asking her to come right away to her business. When Mac arrives, Tulia points to the walk-in cooler, and Mac discovers the body of Annette DiCicero. The body has one of Tulia’s custom lobster picks protruding from her neck. Tulia is a member of the Wampanoag tribe, and she and Annette have had several confrontations over the changing of Columbus Day to Indigenous People’s Day. Even though Annette’s body was found in the Lobstah Shack, Mac doesn’t feel that Tulia can murder. In addition, Mac noticed something in the walk-in cooler that suggests that Annette didn’t die there.
Mac and the Cozy Capers Book Club will put their collective heads together to learn the killer’s identity. Their searching will have them checking Annette’s husband to her husband’s business partner, members of the local homeless encampment, and a lady connected with her in her beauty pageant days.
This delightful series has excellent, well-developed, and believable characters. The story is well-written and plotted, and plenty of twists and turns that the killer was kept unknown to me until the end. The book moves at a nice pace. Delicious sounding recipes are also included in the book.
I’m looking forward to the next book in this excellent series.
I absolutely love the characters in this series! Mac, the main character and owner of the bike shop is intelligent, hardworking, unique, loyal and curious which makes for a good friend and sleuth! Her group of book loving friends are varied and dynamic as well. In this particular case, someone is framing one of Mac's book friends and neighboring business owner and so it's all hands on deck to help solve the murder before someone gets away with the frame job! A fun plot with lots of side story to keep you delightfully entertained. I can't wait to read the next book! I did listen to this one rather than read and I must say the narrator does an outstanding job of bringing the story to life!
This series started out good but hasnt continued to improve.
One of the worst things was the mention of the pandemic, and almost joking about it. Since this is a work of fiction there's no reason to bring it up at all unless the goal was to meet a word count quota.
Seems like a good chunk of this book is set up for future books and pushing an agenda. Stick to the story and you'll have a much better novel
I like Mac, but even in the third book of the “A Cozy Capers Book Group Mystery” series, Murder At The Lobstah Shack she takes some getting used to in order to really like. I enjoy that Mac runs her bicycle sales and repair shop and works hand-in-hand with her brother. She is also very involved with the rest of her family and makes them a part of her day-to-day life. The real problem with Mac is that she can’t keep her nose out of murder investigations.
When her business neighbor, friend, and owner of The Lobstah Shack, Tulia, calls on her to help when she finds a body in her walk-in freezer, no one can blame Mac for running straight into the middle of another mystery. It doesn’t take long for her to find suspects or motives, but finding the evidence and the truth seem to evade her until the very end. She spends more time running around than running her bicycle shop, and even when her grandmother lands in the hospital, Mac spends too much time following the trail of crumbs that lead her straight into the sights of a killer.
The twists and turns run throughout the story, and Mac has to follow every one of them to their conclusion. Eventually, the killer is unveiled, but not without a few heart-stopping moments that will leave readers wondering if Mac might not be better off going back to her bicycle shop and letting the police do their job. Characters in this series are fun and enjoyable to spend time with, especially Mac's parrot, Bella. Even when they aren’t as robust as they have been in previous installments. The location couldn’t be better, and the food and recipes will have your mouth watering. Overall Murder At The Lobstah Shack is an enjoyable read but might not be everyone’s cup of tea.
Another great read in A Cozy Capers Book Group Mystery book series. I received this in a giveaway, and just got around to reading it because I wanted to read them in order. I am glad I did. This is the first series by Maddie Day I have read. I am now a big fan. Great cozy read.
Mac and Tom are not compatible at all. Their "love story" really takes away from the rest of the book. Also the way the authors talks about the pandemic is appalling. She makes it sound like a inconvenience that lasted a matter of months instead of a global disaster going on year 3.

The only reason I gave this book a star, is because it wouldn't allow me half of one. What. A. Let. Down. Here I was thinking what fun summer read, boy howdy was I wrong. I had all I could do to make it half way, it is beyond rare I don't finish a book. The writer should take up political "fiction" because it's clear she was out for the conservatives, everyone came across-the-board as a bigot, everyone was out to destroy the environment...do yourselves a favor, keep it on the shelf or wherever you see it. I'll never read another book from this series. 👎
I absolutely love this series! The characters are so fun, and I love the Cape Cod setting. Mac is a fantastic protagonist, and I enjoyed solving the mystery with her. The murder mystery was fun, and I loved the plot twists!

MURDER AT THE LOBSTAH SHACK is the third book in the Cozy Capers Book Group Mystery series by Maddie Day. You can always count on this author to start her books off with a bang and this newest release is no different. Up front, you know you’re in for an exciting read with plenty of colorful characters, red herrings, and suspects galore. Mac Almeida, owner of the Cape Cod town’s bicycle shop, is an appealing protagonist. She’s kind, thoughtful, and cares deeply for her family, friends, and community. I appreciate that Ms. Day shows Mac actually working and interacting with her customers, instead of relying completely on her brother (a single dad) to run the shop. Another strength of this series is the tender family dynamic that is the central theme of the story and I love how close-knit Mac is to her brother, niece, father, mother, grandmother, and boyfriend, Tim. Their interaction allows their inner character to shine. But by far, my favorite character has to be Belle, Mac’s adorable African Gray Parrot. She steals each scene she’s in while providing many chuckles to lighten the book.
When a body is found in Mac’s friend’s Lobstah Shack, Mac utilizes her friends in her cozy book club to help solve the mystery. I adore how Ms. Day mentions and quotes from other popular cozy mystery books (in this case Fogged Inn by Barbara Ross) and draws parallels to their own investigation. And did I mention they meet at a lighthouse where Mac’s brother lives? Talk about an intriguing location! The plot was well paced and there were enough suspects to keep me guessing as I turned the pages. As the story wound up, I was impressed at the research the author must have had to do to come up with such a unique method for the death. The cohesive conclusion answered all my questions and brought the story to a close with a satisfying ending and new changes to look forward to in Mac’s life.
Mac is fortunate to be surrounded by people who love to cook and bake. Her boyfriend owns a bakery and her mother loves to serve wholesome, delicious dishes and there are several recipes at the back of the book. I was provided with an advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Murder at the Lobstah Shack is the 3rd book in the Cozy Capers Book Group Mysteries written by Maddie Day. I have read the first two books in this series and this one is another great installment to the series. Maddie Day wastes not time in this one, Mac's friend, Tulia, owner of the lobster restaurant finding a body on the first page. She calls Mac and begs for her help. When Mac arrives and they recognize the victim, it becomes apparent that Tulia could be the murderer.
I really enjoy this series set in a small town on the coast of Massachusetts. There is even a book club, Cozy Capers Book Club, that Mac, her brother and friends are part of, including a retired Police Chief. They read cozy mysteries and use them to solve crimes. There is more than one suspect in this one and definitely a few red herrings. Some of the plotlines deal with homeless people, a controversy surrounding beauty pageants and backstabbing. I enjoy visiting Westham, Mass. and seeing what Mac, her friends and relatives are up to. I love her niece, and she plays a bigger role in this story being friends with the murder victim's daughter. This was an interesting and intricate mystery and can't wait to see what Maddie Day comes up with next. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon request. The rating and opinions shared are my own.
This was an enjoyable read. This is the third book in the Cozy Capers Book Group Mystery series. In this book, a woman by the name of Annette is found dead in Tulia’s Lobstah Shack walk-in freezer with a custom-made claw-handled lobster pick in her neck. Tulia becomes the main suspect, so it is up to Mac and the Cozy Capers Book Group to find out who the real killer is and clear Tulia’s name. As Mac begins to investigate into Annette’s life, they begin to get annoyed with the investigation. I thought the story was great. To me, I felt this story was better than the first book. I really enjoyed it. I thought the mystery was intriguing and kept me engaged. I really liked that Mac was a great character. I love the fact that she has a passion for books. I thought it added more to her character and I felt more connected to her. I thought the secondary characters were great as well. The ending was great. I cannot wait to read book 4. Murder in a Cape Cottage, here I come. Overall, a great read.
I enjoy this series quite a bit, and Murder at the Lobstah Shack has all the fixings needed to stir up a great cozy mystery. Mac Almeida is enjoying running her bicycle shop in a tiny town on Cape Cod. A frantic telephone call from local restaurant owner, Tulia, sends Mac head first into the middle of another murder investigation. Armed with her own knack for sniffing out clues, Mac's also joined by her friends, who are also eager to do their own detecting. I'm interested to see what the author has planned next for this fun, colorful cast of characters. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of this book.
I started this book at 10:30 last night and finished it an hour ago. The hunt for the killer was only part of the story. We met more of the townspeople and learned about the homeless problems the town was dealing with.
I could go on and on, but I'll just stop here and urge you to beg, borrow or steal (just kudding) a copy to read.
A fun cozy with engaging characters. This is the third in the series but the first one I have read. I could follow it just fine. There are plenty of suspects and red herrings to keep you guessing. Enjoy.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in return for an honest review.
Nice fast cozy. Fun and relatable characters. This series is still fairly new - 3 books in the series with the 4th coming out in September. Established author.
This is the third book in the series and can be read as a stand alone. I enjoy this series for its seashore setting, wonderful charcters and fascinating sleuthing. Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley. My review opinion is my own.
Mac runs a busy bicycle shop in a small town on Cape Cod. The setting of this series is very atmospheric and fun. She is our protagnist and resident sleuth who has solved two previous murders. Mac is well liked and popular in their small coastal town. Mac is part of a book club called "Cozy Capers". When one of her fellow business owners finds a body in her walk in she is immediately a suspect and Mac works to clear her name.
I like the charcters and sleuth of this next in series. The sleuth is well crafted and surprising to conclusion. Mac is a savvy smart independent sleuth. I look forward to the next in series.
This is a fun series that keeps getting better. I love that Mac and Tim were getting closer and even Mac's wrapped her brain around marriage and a family much better than she would've in the first book. Mac's pet parrot Belle cracks me up with how she imitates everyone and picks up catch phrases. She's definitely a different type of pet for a main character, lol. I enjoyed it whenever Mac would interact with her sweet little niece Cokey. Just reading how she is with Cokey, I have no doubts that Mac's gonna make a really awesome mom someday.
The mystery was a tough one, and I really thought it was cool how the author put in a little nudge to a friend author of hers, Barb Ross who writes the Maine Clambake series. Yes, I read acknowledgements, lol. As with this author's Country Store series, I always think I have the perp right, but boom! I'm wrong...and loving it! I'm eager to see what's happening next in the series!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher Kensington via NetGalley, and my opinions are my own.
I received a free copy of this book from Tantor Audio and voluntarily reviewed it.
Murder at the Lobstah Shack is the third book in the Cozy Capers Book Group Mystery series. This series follows Mac and her friends in the cozy capers book group as they solve mysteries. This time one of Mac's friends discovers a body in her walk in fridge and the group gets together to solve another mystery.
I really like this author's Country Story Mystery series, but for some reason this series never gets quite to that level for me, which makes me sad. The whole concept of them having a cozy mystery book group in a cozy mystery book just feels a bit off to me. And while I like reading about Mac's bike shop, it doesn't have the same charm to me as Robbie's store.
The mystery in this one didn't quite work for me. I am not quite sure why, but even from the start this mystery didn't quite grip me. There are some possible suspects and plenty of red herrings. There's a lot that comes to light and leads to the reveal at the end, but it just wasn't as interesting to me. There was a key piece of evidence someone held behind and it just felt that with that piece revealed earlier this mystery would've been solved much earlier. I also thought the reveal was a bit anti-climactic and it felt kinda sad to me.
I like reading about Mac and how she's smart enough to take precautions when she's investigating. yes she gets herself in danger sometimes, but she acts smartly and uses her brain before rushing into a situation. I like her interactions with her friends and family. It was great seeing how her and Tim's relationship developed in this book, although for some reason I keep wondering whether they stay together or not, especially after what happened in book 2. I also like Mac's parrot who is fun to read about.
I am glad I listened to this one. Rachel Dulude does a great job with the narration and I like how she does the different character voices. I can definitely recommend the audio version for this series.
To summarize: While this was an entertaining read it didn't grip me as much as I had hoped. The mystery didn't quite work for me and I wasn't as interested in finding out how did it. There are lots of things that come to light, but it just wasn't as interesting to me for some reason. Someone keeps a key piece of evidence behind that could've solved the case a lot earlier and the reveal felt kinda anti-climactic and sad to me. I like how Mac is pretty smart in her investigations and doesn't get herself into danger too much. Rachel Dulude does a great job with the narration for this one and I like the way she does the different voices for the characters.
