When cartoonist Fabien Toulmé and his family became aware of Syrian (and other) 400 refugees drowning in the Mediterranean on 10 October 2013, one of his kids asked him who these people were, and he had to admit he didn't know. He knew that part of the problem in gaining any empathy for this horrific event was in the numbers themselves, the sheer immensity of such death reduced to "body counts." So he set out to create a comics series about the refugee crisis, wisely settling on interviewing just one individual so he and we could humanize this tragedy. What might it mean to be a Syrian (or any other) refugee. But the point was not to generalize, but to tell one person's story.
This is the first of four volumes from Toulmé, who had no background in journalism. He was admittedly naive; how can I tell this story truthfully and yet hide his informant's identity in case there were reprisals for his story? What emerges is a cartoonist who is like most people, a compassionate person who needs to research the political situation and figure out how to respectfully and forcefully represent one refugee's fate.
As the publisher's description has it, "After the Syrian uprising in 2011, Hakim was arrested and tortured, his town was bombed, his business was seized by the army, and members of his family were arrested or disappeared. This first leg of his odyssey follows Hakim as he travels from Syria to Lebanon, Lebanon to Jordan, and Jordan to Turkey, where he struggles to earn a living and dreams of one day returning to his home."
As the story gets told, Toulmé makes himself part of the story, reminiscent of the journalistic cartooning of Joe Sacco (Palestine). We get a sense of the process of its being made, including the difficulties such as just setting up the interviews for someone who has for a long time been "in transition." Maybe there is more of this kind of detail than I would like, but it does help make it more real, less "literary," in a way.
The cartooning is sort of cartoony, reminding me of Riad Sattouf's series about his own transition from the middle east to France; it's a tough story, but the artwork is light and colorful, not depressing. I might get into it more, but at this point I'd say it is a little longer than it needs to be (?), and I'd rate it 3.5, rounded up for the ambition of it.
400 people drowned on that one day in 2013, but the drownings continue. in 2015 alone more than 3,500 drowned, and it 2020 more than 1,400 drowned, all im the Mediterranean alone. And this is just one point in the world, where people are increasingly dying in the process of being displaced. As climate change deepens, worsens, this 21st century crisis will only continue. We are as a planet not adequately dealing with it, obviously. More than 60 million are refugees now, and it will only get worse in the coming decades. Maybe these stories will help us ourselves become greater activists, such as Toulmé became.

kalbim parçalandı okurken. ne kadar potansiyel sahibi, başarılı, özgüvenli, ve en önemlisi ailesiyle mutlu insanlar var ve savaşlar, diktatörlükler, katliamlar bu insanları nasıl harcıyor. üzülmemek elde değil.
ve bir insanın kendi ülkesine sığamaması ne kadar zor, ne kadar kötü. dünyadaki en büyük çaresizliklerden biri olsa gerek. hakim kendi hikayesine, tüm o zorluklara rağmen çok pozitif bakıyor ama ben çok ağladım okurken.

Bir solukta okunan ama içinize oturan grafik romanlardan birisi. Suriye’de kendi işini kurup iyi şartlarda ve ailesiyle yaşayan Hakim’in, Arap Baharı’nın ardından karışan ülkesinden sürgün olmasının hikayesi. Savaşın iki yüzlülüğü, sivillerin hayatındaki yıkımı, duygusal bir yoğunluktan ziyade (hatta biraz Guy Delisle tarzında) sade bir gerçeklik ile anlatıyor. Hakim (ki gerçek adı değil tabii ki) bazı noktalarda kendi durumuyla ve geçtiği süreçlerle ilgili şakalar yapıyor, iyimser bakışını hala koruyor. Ama bu durum yaşadıklarını hafifletmiyor, aksine travmalarıyla yüzleşen ve bunları yenmeye çalışan insan psikolojisini çok daha iyi yansıtıyor. Suriye İç Savaşı, ülkelerinden sürülen ve gittikleri her ülkede zaman içinde “Suriyeliler işlerimizi elimizden alacak” damgası yiyen mültecilerin hayatlarına dair etkileyici bir anlatı. Ben çok beğendim. Ara vermeden diğer ciltlerini de okuyacağım.

The story of a Syrian refuge as he wanders around the Middle East trying to find his place in the world, a place where he can support himself after being forced to leave Syria. In the lead-up to the unrest that causes Hakim to leave, he's running a successful nursery. His family is doing well. Then as the unrest spreads through his neighborhood outside Damascus, he's detained and tortured for no reason. His younger brother doesn't come home one night and they still haven't heard from him. It's gripping stuff. My only complaint is that it's too long at 270 pages and it's the first of a trilogy. I did like how the author inserts himself into the story as he takes interviews with Hakim. The cartoony art style also helped mitigate some of the bleakness of the story.

quelle lecture essentielle! cette BD est d’actualité plus que jamais 🌎. j’ai adoré la manière dont Hakim est présenté et le fait qu’un journaliste s’intéresse à son histoire de cette manière. c’est si bien apporté et c’est un sujet qui importe tellement que cette lecture est grande et nécessaire. j’avais envie de lire autre chose et j’ai été servie!

Çizimler çok başarılı öncelikle. Suriye'de neler oldu çok daha iyi anlamanızı sağlıyor. Buram buram dram kokan hikayeyi ajitasyona çok başvurmadan hatta şakacı bir dille anlatıyor. Mültecilere olan bakış açımı (malesef) değiştirememiş olsa da kitabı çok beğendim.

A French comic book creator interviews and dramatizes the life of a Syrian refugee now living in France. Hakim Kabdi tried to keep his head down and run his plant nursery as the Syrian civil war broke out, but after his brother disappears and he himself is arrested, he begins wandering around the Middle East looking for a stable job and a safe place to live.
I appreciated the author explaining how he came to do this project, but I didn't need so many scenes set in the present day with him and Hakim trying to schedule time to talk. The flashbacks to Syria are the most interesting. The scenes of Hakim moving around looking for work get a little repetitive and dull until a romantic interest appears to perk things up again.
This is the first book in a trilogy, and I will certainly keep my eye out for the next one.

Fabien Toulme Beklediğim Sen Değildin ile nefesleri kesmişti. O yüzden Hakim'in Yolculuğu ile beklentim yüksekti ama yüksek beklenti ile o beklentinin karşılanması bütün gezegenlerin ardarda dizilmesi gibi.
Bir kere Fabien'in kendi iç dünyasını yansıttığı kareler her zamanki gibi muhteşem. Sorduğu soru çok doğru. Örneğin bir uçak kazası bizi bu kadar etkilerken her gün binlerce hayatın yitip gittiği, milyonlarca insanın yer değiştirmek zorunda bırakıldığı trajediler bizi neden bu kadar etkilemiyor? Fabien şöyle diyor: Daha da kötüsü, vahim bir şekilde bundan utanıyordum. Uçak yolcuları için hissettiğim şefkati hissetmiyordum.
Fabien Suriye'nin kuruluşu, Alevilik gibi kavramları çok güzel anlatmış. Hikaye elbette ki çok dramatik. Düşünsenize tek istediğiniz özgür yaşamak ve bu hakkınız elinizden gün be gün alınıyor. İşinizden olduğunuz gibi bir öğreniyorsunuz ki işyerinize askerler el koymuş. Ne yapabilirsiniz ki? Elinizdekiyle yetinmeye çalışırken kendinizi hapiste buluyorsunuz, eviniz bombalanıyor, kardeşiniz kayıplara karışıyor, ve her şükrettiğiniz şey ertesi gün elinizden alınıyor. Sonra da ülkeniz. Artık mültecisiniz.

Ülkemiz de her gün dününü mumla ararken halen dibi görmediğimizi bilyoruz. Suriye olmaktan bir tık uzaktayız. Sadece farkında değiliz. Yanılıyor muyum? Son 20 yılda olmaz dediğiniz şeylere bir bakın o zaman. Gösteri, TOMA, taş, yaralama, keyfi tutuklama, gazetecilere baskı hepsi aynı. 2013'te direkten döndük. Bugün bireysel silahlanma özellikle teşvik ediliyor. Hakim yaşadığı ve bizim henüz izlemeye yeni başladığımız filmi şöyle anlatıyor: Korku üzerine inşa olmuş bir rejim bu kadar kolay pes etmez.
Kitabın sonunda doğru Hakim artık Antalya'da. Antalya'ya dair de bu kadar detay hatırlamasına inanamadım. Muratpaşa Belediyesi Falez Parkı, Şok Market, Deniz Kebap, Beytürk İnşaat, Pasaport Pizza, Ünal Market ve daha bir çok detay var Antalya'ya dair. Artık İstanbul'da huzura erer diye ummak istiyorum ama işlerin bu kadar kolay sonuçlanmayacağını da biliyorum.
Hani bir çiçeği mikroskop altında inceleseniz milyonlarca hücreden birini görürsünüz ya.. Hakim'in hikayesi yürek burksa da milyonlarca benzer hikayenin sadece biri. Sadece sesini duyurabilmiş olanı. Hem de Fabien Toulme'nin muhteşem kalemiyle.

Kimi yerde Hakim'in hikayesi kesilip röportaj anına dönülüyor. Bu anlar akışı bozuyor ve çoğunlukla anlatılanlara katkısı yok bence. Etkileyici ve bilgilendirici başlayan hikaye giderek ayrıntılarda tekrara düştü. En önemlisi duygu mu desem psikolojik taraf mı desem bu kısım çok eksikti. Şöyle söyleyeyim; mültecilerin yaşadıklarını kendi kalemlerinden okumak en iyisi. Yazarın konuya uzaklığı çok belli olmuş kitapta.

"A odisseia de Hakim" é uma história para se ler completa. Agora, que a editora Nemo publicou os três volumes no Brasil, aproveitei para fazer isso. Portanto, usarei essa resenha como minha opinião final sobre os três livros (sem spoiler, hehe).
Em linhas gerais, acompanhamos a história real de Hakim (que não se chama Hakim, esse é um pseudônimo usado para que sua família ficasse devidamente protegida), um jardineiro que tinha uma pequena empresa e se viu obrigado a fugir da Síria quando a situação no país ficou insustentável. Com as manifestações da população por liberdade e os bombardeios frequentes como resposta, Hakim embarca em uma perigosa, desumana e triste jornada em busca de um lugar onde pudesse encontrar o mínimo de segurança.
A história é contada por Fabien Toulmé, um popular quadrinista francês que realizou uma série de entrevistas com o Hakim durante o período de um ano e meio. Esses encontros também são retratados na HQ, sempre nos provocando a pensar.
Foi uma leitura fluida, mas não foi uma leitura fácil ou descontraída. Pensar que essa mesma história está se repetindo com milhões de pessoas no mundo inteiro neste exato momento é de partir o coração. Especialmente agora, considerando que estamos vivendo uma pandemia mundial, só consigo imaginar o caos que ter se implantado. Cada momento parecia pior que o outro — a exploração econômica do desespero alheio, as situações degradantes sob as quais migrantes são colocados, a dificuldade por conseguir trabalho, a burocracia desumana... Não consigo imaginar como deve ser precisar ser forte, e contar com a sorte, para enfrentar o que ele enfrentou.
Sorte, inclusive, é uma palavra que me peguei pensando durante a leitura. Não porque Hakim tivesse "sorte" de estar naquela condição e ainda assim conseguir uma saída, isso é um problema de direitos humanos que merece um texto à parte; mas porque, não apenas uma vez, a sorte era tudo o que ele tinha em alguns momentos. Não raras vezes, ele precisava escolher entre duas alternativas distintas para continuar sua trajetória. Ambas eram perigosas e poderiam dar muito errado. Suas escolhas costumavam ser certeiras, entretanto, isso não garantia que a situação seria muito melhor.
Falo sobre "sorte" porque é a isso que migrantes do mundo inteiro se agarram quando não têm um órgão sério cuidando da maior crise humanitária dos nossos tempos, quando não têm o aparato de governos, quando não têm o mínimo garantido para poderem se reestabelecer em países e conseguir empregos, quando não têm segurança perto da polícia, quando não têm direitos mínimos garantidos.
Esse é um tema que costuma mexer bastante comigo. Deixar seu lar em busca de segurança para você e sua família é um desafio que milhões enfrentam, nem sempre com êxito. Às vezes bate aquela sensação de que você não pode mudar isso a nível global, porque é só uma pessoa, e não deixa de ser verdade. Mas acho que essa HQ e tantas outras histórias podem ser o começo para sensibilizar as pessoas a buscarem coletivamente por uma mudança.

Às vezes bate aquela sensação de que você não pode mudar isso a nível global, porque é só uma pessoa, e não deixa de ser verdade. Mas acho que essa HQ e tantas outras histórias podem ser o começo para sensibilizar as pessoas a buscarem coletivamente por uma mudança.

It's hard for me to get my head around these numbers and the suffering endured by so many. Graphic memoirs like this one help me understand some of the personal stories behind these numbers. The only reason I am not one of these millions is due to sheer luck.

I liked the illustration style, and the non-sensational way this is told. I plan to pick up the rest in the series as soon the translations are available.

“I don’t really know…”
This innocent question from Fabien Toulme’s daughter about immigrants set him on a path of discovery. Of knowing the stories behind the statistics, the people behind the news. In “Hakim’s Odyssey” he talks to Hakim, an immigrant from Syria, to know more about his journey from Syria all the way to France. The story begins with Hakim detailing his life before the war in Syria, how things escalated quickly rendering him jobless, and his escape from Syria in search of a different life.
Hakim’s Odyssey is a three-part series, and this is the first one which details his journey from Syria to Turkey. Through his account, we get slices of Syrian culture and their way of life. I found many similarities with Indian culture – the spirit of community, the reliance on extended friends and family, the impromptu family gatherings or visits, etc. I also got a quick rundown on Syrian politics, which I didn’t know much about.
Hakim’s story so far is laced with a tinge of desperation although there’s hope as well. I say tinge of desperation because although Hakim loses his entire business (he had a plant nursery in Syria) he is not in dire straits, yet, because his business had flourished and he was well-off. He has some savings, and he can afford to take flights to neighbouring countries.
But there are other things in the background that keep him and his family awake at night – his younger brother, Jawad, goes for a protest and then goes missing. Hakim gets imprisoned and everyone spends sleepless nights waiting for him to be released.
Other than a bit of a lag somewhere towards the second half, I was completely engrossed in Hakim’s story. And his story puts a name and face to the countless immigrants and their experiences which mostly go untold. It reminds us that those statistics are made up of individual numbers, each number is a person, and each person is a story. Toulme’s illustrations make them all the more real by giving us something to really visualise.
I am definitely going to get the next two parts of this series.

By turns powerful, arresting, and banal, Hakim's Odyssey offers everything to the reader. Fabien Toulme has chosen the smart, surprising tack of reproducing Hakim's life in full. We get the quiet moments, the exciting moments, and everything in between. If you're ready to delve deep into a refugee's life story, Hakim's Odyssey is the book to read.
And this first volume doesn't even see Hakim step on European soil! We move from Syria to Lebanon to Jordan to Turkey, with Hakim encountering challenges at every turn. But there's room for friendship, family, and love. And sheer terror as Hakim is picked up by the Syrian secret police and tortured for days.

Maybe I'm a special kind of crazy, but Hakim's Odyssey really scratched an itch AND helped me better understand the travails of refugees. Eye-opening, to say the least.

Confieso que llegué a este libro con mucha ignorancia sobre el conflicto en Siria, pero no se preocupen si les pasa igual porque su autor nos pone en contexto con dibujos (más claro imposible) y nos muestra además una historia real de un hombre que accede a contarla para que su hijo conozca la historia de sus padres, padres que lo perdieron todo en un abrir y cerrar de ojos pero que no se rindieron, padres que en medio de la incertidumbre encontraron un refugio en el otro, un pedacito del hogar lejos de casa, un nuevo hogar.
Crisis humanitaria, crudeza, muerte, manifestaciones, represión, detenidos desaparecidos, miedo, desconfianza, frustración, esperanza, familia, amistades y amor. Eso es lo que podrán encontrar en estas viñetas y en su historia llena de valentía y perseverancia.
Una novela gráfica fuerte y conmovedora, que es solo la primera entrega de una verdadera odisea de tres partes que estoy deseosa por conocer.

Çok sevdim, yanı başımızda ve şimdi de ta içimizde olan acı şeylere nasıl kayıtsız kaldık ve bunların hepsi nasıl da birilerinin biricik ve değerli hayatıydı, bunu çok çarpıcı bir şekilde ve duygu sömürüsüne hiç girmeden anlatabilmiş Toulmé. Kitabın başındaki olayların özeti kısmı da daha önce hiçbir yerde görmediğim kadar derli topluydu.

Un avion s’écrase et cela fait la une des journaux. Des migrants sont retrouvés noyés et cela parait dans un entrefilet. Afin de mettre des visages sur cette réalité trop occultée qu’est le sort des réfugiés, Fabien Toulmé choisit de raconter l’histoire d’un migrant. Il le fait avec brio en entrecroisant le récit difficile de la migrance d’Hakim avec des séquences plus légères se déroulant au présent. Alors, le lecteur est témoin des entretiens entre l’auteur et son sujet. Cette lecture nous fait réfléchir en ces temps de pandémie et remet en perspective notre situation qui est finalement pour assez confortable. Elle nous permet aussi de mieux comprendre les conflits en Syrie.

Où la résilience ne peut faire autrement qu'élargir ses limites :
"Finalement, nous, les exilés, on est peut-être un peu comme des plantes. Quand on les déracine et qu'on les met dans un pot, elles continuent de pousser, mais avec moins de force et d'envie."
On est tous de chair et d'os. Soyons bienveillants envers ceux qui perdent tout et qui sont en quête de sécurité. Ceux qui perdent ce qu'on pense ne jamais perdre. Chez nous, où la sécurité est souvent prise pour acquise.

Que dire sur cette histoire? Ce n'est pas qu'Hakim. Il en existe des centaines de comme celui-ci, dispersés dans le monde entier, à la recherche d'un nouveau chez-soi, loin de la guerre qui les rend fous tous les jours. En Grèce où j'habite et en Europe, on est témoin d'une crise migratoire jamais vue de ma génération, qui est à la fois une crise humanitaire. Des gens fuient leurs pays, se déracinent brutalement, quittent leur maison et leurs propres et cela entraîne un chagrin profond. On ne peut pas rester intacte, Hakim ne sera jamais le même qu'avant.
Dans ce tome-ci on suit la première partie de l'odyssée d'Hakim, de la Syrie jusqu'à Istanbul, avec d'autres arrêts entretemps. Je trouve que le livre est en tout très respectueux envers la vraie histoire de tous les refugies et je suivrais la suite avec un grand plaisir et empathie.

Φυσικά και έκανα συνειρμούς, φυσικά και σκέφτηκα τα δελτία ειδήσεων και τι μας παρουσιάζεται, όμως περισσότερο από όλα επικεντρώθηκα στο να μπορέσω να με βάλω στη θέση ενός ανθρώπου που υπόκειται αυτή τη δοκιμασία και να μαντέψω πώς θα ένιωθα εγώ.
Στην Ελλάδα, είμαστε αυτόπτες μάρτυρες από πρώτο χέρι αυτής της μεταναστευτικής και ανθρωπιστικής κρίσης, δε θα μπορούσε να μη με ενδιαφέρει αυτό το βιβλίο. Σε αυτόν τον τόμο παρακολουθούμε την πορεία του Χακίμ από τη Συρία στην Τουρκία και στους επόμενους 2 τόμους έχει τη συνέχεια του ταξιδιού του αυτού μέχρι να καταλήξει στη Γαλλία. Çizgi romanların çizimlerinden pek anlamıyorum galiba ama bu kitaptaki bi çizim benim içime işledi; Hakim’in gözaltına alındığı yerdeki işkence döngüsü çok güzel çizilmiş. Bu diktatörlükle yönetilen ülkelerle ilgili bişeyler okudukça hep aynı öfkeye kapılıyorum. Ya bırakın da insanlar basitçe yaşasın işte, fidanlığında mutlu insanı neden sürdünüz ordan oraya ki şimdi.

This is great. The cartoonish art makes the story accessible without losing the gravity of the situation. I appreciate the author's insertion of how he came up with the idea to get the story, then the difficulties in interviewing Hakim. Can't wait to see what happens in Vol. 2.

Who are refugees? This book is an engaging and thought-provoking true story that is a perfect example of a graphic-format book that can be offered to readers who think they don't like comics.
It struck me that Hakim is the sort of person who would be championed by the same cultural forces that oppose refugees/immigrants, if they only could get past their initial prejudices: he is a small business owner, hard-working and willing to take any job to support himself, and values his family above all else.
Amazingly, so much happens in this book and his story is just beginning!

Avec la délicatesse que j'avais découvert grâce à "Ce n'est pas toi que j'attendais", Fabien Toulmé parle d'un syrien et de son arrivée en France. Bon ce n'est pas dans ce volume que vous le découvrirez car 3 volumes sont prévus. Mais l'auteur se fait le chantre de ce qu'à vécu Hakim, heureux et travailleur en Syrie qui va voir ses espoirs, sa vie se détruire progressivement. D'escales en escales Hakim cherche à aider sa famille restée au pays, mais partout, cette fuite de millions d'émigrés comme lui, exploités mais perçus comme volant le travail des locaux le pousse à s'éloigner toujours plus, dans des pays dont ils ne maîtrisent pas la langue. Ce 1er opus nous rappelle des faits historiques anciens et plus récents sur la Syrie, fort utiles.
Et surtout Fabien Toulmé avoue la quasi banalisation de ces arrivées massives, figures anonymes auxquelles nous ne nous identifions pas, ayant oublié qu'au siècle dernier ce sont les français qui fuyaient la guerre dans leur pays.
