What would you do if you discovered another world inhabited by mythical beings?
Thomas McCartney is a soldier. When war strikes, he leaves London to fulfil his military duties. However, his mission cannot be accomplished after he finds himself in a different world.
Thomas stands face to face with dinosaurs, mythical creatures, and other humanoid races. Plus, an ancient prophecy that puts his life at risk. Thomas desperately tries to find his way back home, but he can’t succeed unless he learns how to survive and escape those who want to stop him.
Can he make it back home? Can he accept the destiny foreshadowed for him in the prophecy?
If you wish travelling between the worlds was possible, you will love this book. It’s for those who enjoy epic fantasy full of action, adventure, mystery and internal struggle. Beyond a tale about discovering different world, it’s a story of a man becoming a hero.

Sandra S. Frankowska is the author of international epic fantasy series Heroes Of the Shadow.
When she is not writing, Sandra is either reading, painting or rock climbing.
The Heroes Of the Shadow books are full of mythical creatures, superheroes, mystery and travelling between different worlds. Oh, and some dinosaurs can be found there too!
Some of Frankowska's favorite reads include The Lord Of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, Journey to the Center of the Earth by J. Verne, The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis, Dark Tower by S. King, Jurassic Park by M. Crichton, and The Hunger Games by S. Collins.
I really enjoyed the scale and depth of this fantasy debut which combined epic world-building with a riveting storyline. I'm looking forward for future works from this very talented author.
A turning sentence in the story: ‘A thousand questions were in his head at once. One thought, however, seemed to drown out all the others. Is it possible that he wasn't here by accident? Did Weirdo have a reason to bring him here? But how? Was that even possible?’
The Prologue sets you immediately into the imaginary world of the elusive Indeabinito Kingdom with the 12 different races living there and the appearance of the unusual creature, Tenebrarum, who had a prophecy for the queen. The use of apple to get the magic that executed Tenebrarum's offer to the queen has a biblical association in my mind. Brilliant opening.
There is a sharp transition between the Prologue to the first chapter, making the reader anxious to know the link between the stories/worlds and their emergence.
Subsequently, the fast transition from Tom’s current world on earth to the other world is an artwork. Similarly, the features of those weird creatures in the other world definitely reflect the extraordinary imagination gift of the author. One can actually ‘see’ them while reading. A lot of wild imagination is needed here but the good news is that the author surely knows to smoothly navigate our mind to success. The plot is dynamic nonstop and keeps you being the ground of reality constantly. For example, suddenly hearing Guns N ‘Roses in the other world close to the end - is an amusing episode.
Another memorable text: “… You see, fate never asks. It only throws us at a certain time and place without any warning. The only thing we can do then is to make decisions.” The main story is about evaluating all the various difficult options, reflected through multiple phases of the main character’s so-called Trial, and choosing THE one. My impression is that those surviving skills Tom possesses related to his childhood living while his father, a hero himself, was mostly far away from home.
Indeed, one strong sentence in the dialogue that emphasizes this is: “… You won't take me to your world from here, but what you can take is the information." Further in the book, Tom related: "Maybe our two worlds don't differ that much.”
The story gets more energized through the telling of the history of the other world and the changes that came with the introduction of ‘magic’ extending human life. The names of the groups and leaders in the other world make the story moving forward but at the same time confusing, though it was necessary to understand the conflict (Chapter 16). Connecting the history of the other world with ancient Atlantis on earth is brilliant.
There is so much room for combining science, fiction and imagination during the training of Tom in the other world. For example, the use of the so-called magnetic field and echolocation as senses. That makes the book unique.
Overall there is a bit excessive telling than showing. Yet I gave it 5 stars for the tremendous detailed work, imagination and creativity. True, in some sections telling is necessary to understand the premise. In other sections it teaches us a lot about the characters. For example, all the detailed descriptions of how Tom learns the new world, explain a lot about his nature.
A take-home message as cited is that you can not desert a friend and expect that nothing will happen to you.
Heroes of the Shadow: Blue Scar Indeabinito is indeed a wild ride. An epic adventure, a portal to a new world filled with new creatures and a history entwined with the fate of Thomas's own world. This plot driven book is a solid debute.
The level of world building is impressive, and the history of the worlds she shares with her readers is a testament to the time and love that's been poured into this story. At times the way the history and information was shared, was overwhelming. I wish some kind of rough sketches of the knew creatures and the many new symbols described could have been included. If not in the story itself it would be cool to be able to flip to the back of the book and find them in some kind of appendix. Maybe something then author could explore for a future edition.
I enjoyed the story overall, and am looking forward to seeing book two become available.
Heroes of the Shadow was such a fun, action-packed read! I really enjoyed the extensive world-building. We met dinosaurs, tons of mythical creatures, and interesting characters (Weirdo the cat was my favorite creature). Throughout the book there were even little diagrams that showed some of them (as well as various symbols when necessary). I thought those were really cool!
I particularly liked the parts where Thomas was going through The Trials in the SKY simulator. It was really fast-paced and exciting to read about his struggles to pass all the different tests.
I definitely recommend this book if you like novels with great world-building and fantastical creatures!
A fantastic, immersive Epic Fantasy debut to a promising series.
For a sweeping epic fantasy set in a vibrant world, look no further than Blue Scar Indeabinito.
Our protagonist is Tom, we see him growing up in an alternative reality to our world. Trained in the military (a great way to show his skills and adaptability in the future), Tom is transported to a world inhabited by fantasy races and creatures.
Blue Scar Indebinito is the set-up to the long Fantasy Epic by S.S. Frankowska, revealing the intrigue races, their backstories/cultures and practices, explaining why the planet is the epicenter of a collective hive of activity, and why Tom is here.
For fans of Epic Fantasy, dinosaurs and well crafted secondary worlds, this is for you.
This is a different book than what I have read in the past and that is a great thing! There is a lot of world building and character development that gives the characters depth and sinks you into areas you can see with your mind. A definite Rollercoaster ride that will leave you wanting more. The novel set up a possible sequel and I can't wait until it comes out!
Very enjoyable fantasy! Epic read. For me the best parts were near the beginning. Thomas is a very well written main character and it was fascinating to see him travelling to another world and try to adjust to the people and places he finds himself in. All the while he battles with trying to get back to Earth and questioning whether he is 'the one' a prophecy talks about.
If I had one little criticism it would be sometimes all the details and myth/history of the world get a bit overwhelming at times. However Thomas' journey and very human reactions definitely kept me engaged. Thought the pacing towards the end was excellent too. A very enjoyable read and I recommend to any lovers of epic fantasy!
Blue Scar Indeabinito is a story about Thomas' journey through a fantastic world full of dinosaurs, humanoid species, and all sorts of other surprises. Blending elements of fantasy and sci-fi, Frankowska effortlessly fills the Kingdom of Indeabinito with colorful characters (two of my favorites were Elavai and Weirdo) and a rich and detailed history, full of intrigue, diversity, and high stakes. If you are looking for an enjoyable read that lets you simply get lost in another world for a while, this book is definitely for you.
This book reminded me of Jules Vernes Journey to the Centre of the Earth with the mountain and dinosaurs and new world. While there are some minor formatting/spelling errors, it doesn't take away from the story. I liked Weirdo and thought his name was funny (oh, that silly Tom). I really liked the artefacts that were in the Trials, they were clever and creative. Enjoyed the drawings that came included too - I'd suggest a map of the world for some orientation as Tom goes on his adventure.
