Higher Education

Rate this book
On one hand Bradley Hawthorne could be envied for being born into a life of wealth and privilege, but on the other he also had to deal with a well-meaning but often overzealous mother who spent most of her time championing social causes of various kinds. After a minor shoving incident in elementary school, where Bradley had finally tried to defend himself against the bullies who often teased him for his feminine appearance, his mother decided that he was becoming too much of a “toxic male” and enrolled him in her old alma mater the Bridgefield Academy for Young Ladies as a transgender student who identified as female named Brenda, hoping that a taste of feminine refinement would take the aggression out of him. Much to his surprise Bradley found that living as a girl at a female boarding school wasn’t the nightmare he had anticipated, although it did begin to fuel a lot of confusion and anxiety over his gender identity, a situation that wasn’t helped by the fact that he sometimes needed to revert to his old identity as a boy named Bradley. “Higher Education” is a coming of age story from acclaimed author Stacey Zackerly about a young person’s journey of discovery and sexual awakening and the struggles of trying to figure out where one fits in a world that is quick to label and judge everything even when things aren’t always that easy to define. (The story contains explicit adult language and situations as well as extremely graphic depictions of sexual activity. Approximately 29,000 words.)
