This work is a product of living on the Balcones Fault outside Austin, watching development come over the hills, growing and wholesaling herbs, working as horticulturist at the UT Experimental Drug and Herb Garden, conversations with botanists and folklorists all over the southwest, travels and discoveries in the Edwards Plateau, sites settled by the Macks of my father’s leftist Pennsylvania Dutch family, with other generations in the Perkiomen outside Philadelphia, pursuing plants and herbs among the golden age renaissance discoverers who thought they had found a new world of explorations in Texas, Arizona and New Mexico.
