Bishop is trapped deep inside Montana's Apex Valley along with his injured wife, a shotgun-wielding stranger named Colbrick, and a sneaking suspicion he's never making it back to Chicago. Things no man has seen before haunt the woods. Strange animal species creep behind pine trees, some of them with flashing red tags that blink faster and faster. Giant birds mimic the sound of humans and lord over the sky. Leaf-shaped creatures attack anything that moves and flash vivid colors across their glistening backs. As Bishop and his companions scramble across the Montana wilderness, they find human remains and animal carcasses littering the woods. The small town of Elmore is empty, the windows broken and streaked with blood. Trout Bridge--their only way out--is blocked by abandoned cars, none that were inbound. With the strange animal species closing in, Bishop realizes his group must take a stand. He's got a plan, and maybe they've got one last shot before the invasive species spread to the rest of the U.S.

This was a very good creature feature book. It was very enjoyable and fun to read in a creepy way. There was plenty of action and suspense with creepy, menacing monsters. The characters were likable and engaging and the story had a nice, connective flow to the writing. I will read more by this author and I highly recommend this horror book! I rated this book 4 🌟🌟🌟🌟 stars!
The attempted takeover of the ecosystem in a remote Montana valley by an unknown species that attacks anything that moves traps Bishop, his injured wife and an unknown stranger. This intrepid trio must develop a plan to prevent the spread of this species to the rest of the US. An okay sci-fi/ creature-feature with above average character development. 3 stars.
**I won this book in a Goodreads First Reads giveaway.**
Okay, so this book was freaky! SERIOUSLY freaky! The first night I read it, I had trouble falling asleep, and then I had nightmares! FOR REAL!! And when I say that the action starts right at the beginning, I'm not kidding! The characters are all believable, and you will like, and be terrified for all of them! So, if you like books that won't let you go to sleep at night (because they scare the bejeepers out of you!!), this book is for you!
Interesting premise but executed poorly. The characters annoyed me and the dog was just unrealistic. Why, you ask? Doesn't every dog turn into a miracle tracker out of nowhere? If you go to your dog right now and give him a dirty sock, he'll immediately know that you want him to hunt down your deadbeat ex-roommate who still owes you money...right? That's how the whole "dog" thing works?
THE INVASIVE gets off to a fast start and never lets up. Every chapter is packed with action. There isn’t a dull moment in the book. THE INVASIVE also has some of the weirdest and most terrifying creatures this side of Lovecraft. Seriously! I may never go in the woods again! And not many writers know the woods as well as Michael Hodges. He brings the Apex Valley to vivid life and writes with authority about nature and the issues facing the environment. If you like suspense, bizarre and unique creatures, and nature writing, pick up this book.
After reading numerous zombie survival books, it was nice to pick up something different. I liked the storyline. Different creatures being created in the mountains evidently as a plan to overtake earth. Mean, nasty creatures who want to eat everyone in sight. Even leaves...they're hungry too! The characters are few but neatly portrayed. Especially the dog...I'm a sucker for animals. All in all, a pretty enjoyable read .
This is a free read on Kindle Unlimited. If you're into hopeless survival odds and grotesque alien life forms, this is your kind of book!!!
(The characters were good, but there was something off about Angela. She was more like a character from an old Heinlein book- a caricature of a woman, rather than a real woman. Oh, and bonus points for any WTSHTF story with a loyal dog.... aww....)
I truly enjoyed this book. I can always appreciated the love between a dog and people. I also enjoyed characters coming together for each other during trails.
Boy, Michael Hodges must have a lot of friends to get the average number of stars he has - at least for this book. What he needs is an editor. A really, really good editor.
Mr. Hodges likes adjectives, lots and lots of adjectives, even when they don't really make much sense. He also likes to use unnecessarily obscure words. I would imagine he's a big fan of Reader's Digest increase your word power.
The basic idea for his book is pretty good; and the plot moves along pretty well. The characters are awful - inconsistent or stereotypes; poorly developed. His prose is so purple as to be actually laughable at times.
I only have 2 complaints about this book that kept me from giving it a full 5 stars. The biggest was the amount of typos. Several times "we'll" instead of " well" was used. Huge pet peeve of mine and very distracting. The other was the way it just seemed to jump right into the action. It made me feel disoriented as a reader. It was as if I started the book in the middle. I think I would have been more immersed had there been a bit of back story first. Otherwise I found it very enjoyable and exciting.
Enjoyed it ... But got a little melodramatic at the end
Not a bad book at all, but difficult when you don't like one of the heroes ... In this case, Angela. She annoyed me. Really liked the idea behind the book though, but as I noted ... No spoilers ... It got a bit much at the end. Will read more from this author though!
I didn't get the ending. Was it even over? And what with the flashing lights? Read on, dear sci-fi fans. Lots of action. Just confusion. Was the invasion even contained?
This book was so good that I'm buying Michael Hodges next book Intulo, the lost world. If you like Alison species, romance, hero's dogs than you will love this book. One again we fight for our survival. Our right to live or not.
Couldn’t even be bothered to finish. This was not a good book! The invasive animals were not scary and there was no one to like. It was a very flat boring book!
Corny af book. One dimensional characters, cheesy dialogue, even cheesier mystical dreams, Deus ex machina dogs and creature/aliens that never felt dangerous or murderous or even scary.
Never felt any tension throughout the book, the writing was confused at best, the jokes felt out of place and the occasional switch of pov made my eyes roll. Don't get me started with the yawn inducing monsters.
Wasn't surprised about the ending either, bc ofc this turns out to be a series.
In the peaceful valley something ancient stirs & awakens. A young couple arrive to celebrate their love and find something else there. Something incredibly deadly. They must fight for their own survival as the world burns around them.
And three survivors. An interesting tale of perhaps alien terror in as much as the source of the creatures is undisclosed and the g global and national implications are left in the air. Could make a good movie.
Michael Hodges book, the Invasive, tells the story of three people meeting together on a day strange animal forms appear in Apex Valley. Survival depends on finding shelter and the bond that grows working with combined wits. A interesting read.
