Book #1 of the fantastic Demon in Exile Saga.

Living on the wild frontier of a medieval realm, Ara's keen hunting skills and heightened senses mark him as different. When he kills a demonic assassin in self-defense, he's forcibly recruited by the mysterious Order of the Vigil, protectors of the land of Colivar.

While training at their stronghold, Ara rescues Raven, an exiled dark-elf princess with a mysterious past. Together, they uncover a plot using hellish portals to wage war on their world. As the demonic attacks escalate and ancient powers stir, Ara must embrace his destiny—and the mysterious title "Firefanged"—while leading a company of young warriors in the eternal fight against Hell.

FIREFANGED is a dark fantasy epic filled with demon-slaying, defiance, and intrigue, where the line between weapon and warrior blurs with every battle.

Appropriate for Young Adult and Adult readers.

Firefanged by Rory Surtain is a coming of age paranormal fantasy and supernatural suspense novel with a frontier-like setting. Our protagonist, Ara, is seventeen and notices that the wild animal population outside his village has disappeared. He senses something threatening and sets out to snare it. His encounter with a shadow-cat death-demon assassin is only the beginning of an adventure that changes his life.

Ara has an amazing amount of depth for a character in a debut novel. His back story and inner struggles for acceptance and happiness serve him well as his external struggles increase in this novel. He is likeable and compelling and grows because of the internal and external challenges he faces. The secondary characters had varying degrees of depth, but were sufficient for the first novel in a series.

The plot is truly a good versus evil struggle with lots of action as well as some political intrigue and much more. The world building is fantastic and gave me a great sense of time and place. I felt transported there, living the events alongside Ara. My one quibble with the book were the short sections in the Bar Sinister in the Infernal World. They did not add much to the story line and acted as a detractor for me by breaking up the main part of the tale.

Overall, this was engrossing, entertaining, and a great start to a new series by a debut author. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

I won a digital copy of this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. Opinions are mine alone and are not biased in any way.

DNF at 11%.

Nope, I'm out! This reads like a first draft that needs serious work before it becomes a publishable book.

The characters have no character (pardon the pun), no voice, and no distinctive features. They are props moving through a two dimensional world.

The author hasn't quite mastered the art of showing instead of telling either.

Frankly, I don't understand where all the 5 stars ratings are coming from. This needs a rewrite, and the eyes of a content editor.

Firefanged is an intense paranormal adventure that involves a well-developed world and characters. It pulled me in right from the start. It has heart and likable heroes that fight to protect the fictional realm of Colivar from demon incursion. There is more to this book than a typical paranormal adventure. I'm very glad I discovered it. It's a satisfying read. I will definitely be reading more of this series.

Really enjoyed this book!

What a great twist on fantasy. The main character is likable, learns quickly and doesn’t make stupid mistakes as a plot twist. I’m in!

Firefanged is a fascinating, action-packed paranormal fiction novel weaved around an orphaned teen and a hell bound demon intertwined by an eternal enigma. It is an enriching, interesting and surreal read by a well versed debut author.

Summary

Firefanged is the first fantasy fiction novel of the Demon in Exile Series written by author Rory Surtain. It is a story weaved around one protagonist with two souls; one is a demon warlord named Firefanged waiting in a sinister bar to be reborn while the other one is Ara, an 18-year old who has spent most of his life under the care of a local Church in a frontier city in the fictional, medieval Realm of Colivar. It is a land that suffers due to the demons that cross over from the Infernal Domain. Being unaware of his darker soul’s existence, Ara survives a seemingly random demon attack and is recruited to be one of the guardians of the Kingdom of Colivar. The demon and demon slayer have a mysterious connection which is revealed as the novel progresses in the midst of wars, love, friendship and deceit. Though the novel is subtitled as Demon in Exile it is not just about any one demon. The novel sets the stage for upcoming adventures and thrills of this fresh fantasy world which the reader will get to explore further.

Structure and Elements of the Novel

The novel is a core fantasy fiction with paranormal, military and dark fantasy elements which hover around the fair & foul play of  prey and predator, demonic encounters, shamanic rituals, mysterious connections, vigils, clans and kingdoms. An episode in hell and a soul waiting for an eternity to meet its other half adds another dimension to this series full of clashes and battling beasts. However, the novel is not all about bloodshed and malice but has a touch of teenage romance, humorous and witty conversations, friendship and sacrifices as well.

“Our elements, or Catalysts as they are known here: war, death, pestilence, and strife, are the tools of power that shape our Infernal Domain.”

Story Development and Writing

Though his debut novel, the author is well versed in developing an interesting narrative arc throughout. The story progresses as a first-person narrative with two protagonists whose world may coincide somewhere near the climax. The beginning is complex and not so strong as the protagonist switches abruptly in the scenes but soon picks up the momentum in the middle with the focus being on Ara with surprising twists and turns which engrosses the reader. Scene by scene change with a recurring title for the setting of one of the protagonists will seek the reader’s attention and make it easier to follow. The characters and their storylines have been given appropriate time and space in the novel. However, I found a lot happened in Ara’s world in a short span of time which may be difficult to comprehend from a realistic point of view but maintains the reader’s interest. For those fantasy lovers who do not prefer much warfare I suggest to skip some of the many battles in the novel.

“Prey smells of fear and constant anxiety. This predator reeked of death, some scents being louder than others, and by that alone, I knew it wasn’t natural.”

The prologue is starkly different from any of the chapters written in the book later and so may confuse the reader for a while. But it is a page turner when the reader finishes the novel and comes back to the prologue once again. The author is diligent and clever in leaving clues in between the scenes to weave the stories later in the series as the reader is intrigued with questions such as who Ara really is and how he came into the possession of the dark soul?

"A Demon in Exile; It wasn't a gift; it was a message."

The ingeniously written plot deserves an attentive reader to connect the dots between infernal hell and outer domain which can get complicated and confusing if not read carefully. A word of advice for the readers is not to put down the book or skip pages just by reading the complicated names, titles and houses which may sound unfamiliar as the characters and the setting is introduced. The story is far less complicated and more fascinating than the titles and names. As the novel forms the first of the demon in exile series the reader will find the climax having some threads and missing links to follow in the next novel, but the coming of age story will find a satisfying end for the first phase to this eternal continuation of exile.

Who should read this book?

All the fantasy book lovers waiting to embark on a new journey of a surreal realm of darkness, death, demons, battles, romance and humor altogether. Suitable for Adult and YA readers.

Recommendation

The first book in a series has the responsibility to build  a premise for readers that leave them curious and waiting for the next book. Firefanged serves this purpose well and earns a well-deserved recommendation in the world of fantasy fiction. It is an untainted, fresh and pure fantasy fiction which the reader will devour with interest.

We follow Ara as he learns about himself and his own powers, navigates the complexities of tribal hierarchy, and wins both loyalty and love in an explosive, fantastical world. Rory Surtain has skillfully created a world where readers are irresistibly engaged.

I really enjoyed this book. The main character just draws you into his world and makes you suffer and cheer for him non stop. I loved the funny lines in the midst of the fast action moments. I'm definitely following the story.

This is a very well-written, intelligent fantasy adventure novel. Ara is an easily relatable main character whose heightened powers of perception and his skills for fighting demons leads him into getting recruited into a guardian force for the kingdom. During his training he comes into contact with a race of dark elves and half-breeds as well as a coming invasion from Hell. Though there are superhuman elements in Ara’s character, he is far from indestructible. Nearly every battle he engages in leaves him with considerably painful, life-threatning wounds. This is liable to happen with a warrior who seems to prefer diving headfirst into battle rather than planning his attack that much.

The writer here has done such a great job of world building that my only issue with the book is that it’s written in first person. This not only strips the suspense away from Ara’s survival, but it narrows the focus of the story. It would have been enlightening to know about certain events happening outside his perspective every once in a while. This is a world so rich with interesting characters and supernatural events that a few other POV’s could’ve done nothing less than help enrich the adventures even more.

goodreads giveaway review- enjoyable action-packed demon hunting

Thank you for Goodreads and the publisher for providing me with a digital copy of the book for an honest review.
In FIREFANGED, the story unfolds around Ara, who became an orphan during childhood and has developed his hunting skills to earn his keep in his town, until an evening’s encounter with a demon threaten his life and the life he knew. Soon he’s thrown into a life of hunting demons with the Vigil and complex relationships/politics with dark elves- which seems more complex than demon fighting. (The suddenness and intensity of the relationships developed between Ara and the dark elves/half elves is surprising, and I wonder if the author will reveal more to this bond in future novels or if it’s implied with magic and further development). Interjecting into Ara’s experiences, readers are transported to Bar Sinister in an alternate, hellscape realm of demons or demons in waiting. These chapters are short and vague, and seems to function as foreshadowing for gaining momentum and more clarity in future novels.
Overall this novel was constantly moving with action and adventure complimented with complex character interactions and kept me guessing about Ara and was an enjoyable read! I look forward to future novels in this series

Firefanged: Demon in Exile

This book was interesting, but a bit, uhm, immature, I guess. I don't have the right words for it, I am sorry, but at times it read more like a laundry list of the hero's deeds & less like a story.

The main character is interesting, but you are introduced to a bit of a loner who suddenly acts like he has been in command & used to commanding others for years & there is no real explanation as to why or how he did this huge turn around.

You can see the plot coming & there are no twists.

It was a decent story, needs a bit of work to be a great story, but the 2nd book will go on the backburner until I have read my other books. It is worth checking out, but might want to wait for it to be on sale or for you to need something new to read. If the series improves, I will definitely leave a better review.

Outstanding!

"Firefanged" is an incredible read! It's written intelligently. It's a fast-paced, high-octane action fantasy novel. The humor is witty and has me laughing out loud on several occasions. It was also difficult to predict. Several times, events didn't pan out as I thought that they would. And a couple of things that I expected to happen around the end of the series took place in this novel, instead!

This is Book 1 of a 9-Book series. I already have the other eight books; I have the entire series. I can't wait to launch into Book 2!

Looking for a fantasy novel that moves quickly, and will keep you guessing until the end - and will probably also have you laughing a bit along the way? Then I VERY HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you read "Firefanged"!

It might need a little work, but it's interesting
I found it and the other 8 books for free on Amazon and honestly it's hard to find books that are worth a read when free
Most of those who a free, are drowning in really bad romance and sex scenes even a porn director would be embarrassed about, because it's so bad
Apparently yoy don't need talent when sex sells
The problem with those books is also there's no real story.
Its just super duper handsome mouthwatering men with bih beceps and hot horny women. Honestly it's just lame, but this serie has a story.
Yes it needs a little work, but I rather like it

Promising

Having read the series out of order (at least those books so far that are out) I would say that this first book is not quite on par with the rest, but that is to be expected. With a 1st book, you are feeling your way as an author . Plus, you may have an overall good idea, but the book is still an uncertainty in your mind. Nevertheless, this book is well worth reading to give you background for the ones that follow. If you like fantasy with Interesting characters and mysterious episodes to be explained later, you will like this one!

This is the story of orphan Ara becoming a Vigil in the fight against invading demons invading his world. It is a fast paced story with lots of fights with some romance with a rescued elf girl. There are some elements of Ara’s backstory that are not revealed and hints that we will learn more in further books. The intermixed chapters of demons in a bar were just confusing to me but they did not ruin the story so I still recommend this book for anyone looking for some demon fighting escapism. Maybe the bar interludes will become clearer in future books.

So Happy I found this Series

This is not a first book where at the end I wondered was the book worth moving on to the next sequel; I knew I would and I am. There are badass male & female characters. The action is continuous and filled with vile demonic creatures and Ara is righteous without sainthood qualities nor does he flounder to do the right thing. A fast paced truly cool read.

This fantasy coming-of-age, chosen-one tale really hit me in the gut. Ara bears a lot of resemblance to Pug of Raymond E. Feist's Riftwar novels, advancing due to surprising chance in significant leaps and bounds and a surpassingly great talent for finding and handling trouble of the demonic type. If you enjoy Andy Peloquin's or Steve McHugh's works, you are going to enjoy this grimdark yet hopeful saga.

A worthy and intriguing world

The world this author is building has intrigued me. It has been on my "Want to Read" list for months, as the summary was what first caught my notice. Once I started reading, I was gripped by the mystery of the dual stories, and the question of what it means to be a demon in exile. Starting the next book in the series immediately....as I can't wait!

Good read but the pov switching was confusing at times

Very intriguing and new idea for people fighting demon hordes. One man will find out his destiny is more than he ever dreamt possible. The poverty switches were a little confusing at times however.
