A High Plains Year in Haiku is a collection of 150 haiku selected from over 3,000 that Elser has written. These small poems capture what haiku poets call "haiku moments," moments of brilliance for the observer when some moment of magic happens, completely unannounced and unexpected. They capture the essence of nature as it rolls out before the poet during the seasons of the year. And the poet includes those brief moments of clarity in the presence of humanity with all its blessings and curses.
Art Elser's "A High Plains Year in Haiku" is a fun read, taking the reader through moments of wonder and beauty. Art captures images from every season. Several poems are laced with humor. My favorite poems in the collection were when Art created an image within the first two lines and had a twist in the third line -- some in a humorous way, some in a poignant manner. Art has a gift in capturing a moment in just a few words and making the reader see things in a new way. I enjoyed the layout of the poems on the page and the illustrations by Eileen Roscina. The ordering of the poems felt rhythmic and intentional. The attention to detail in not only each poem but the creation of the book added to my overall enjoyment.
