A new adult romance filled with whimsical, peculiar and magical things.
Violet Ainsworth is a fierce woman, but she also falls out of trees. She twists her ankle missing shallow steps and jams her fingers simply reaching for doorknobs.
Jasper Laurent, her best friend, completely disappeared from her life for fifteen years. The confusion and secrecy of it still hovers in Violet’s mind like a thick cloud.
The two were separated as children due to mysterious circumstances, but they will soon be reunited as adults. Perhaps their misfortune can be changed? Maybe the seeds of calamity will result in the bloom of love?
Yet another treat from the amazingly talented Karla Nikole. I cannot gush about her stories enough! This book starts with Violet Ainsworth coming home after her gram died. The loss of the one person who truly understood her starts a new chapter in her life, literally. Long lost friend, long forgotten dreams and passions, and her true self came to life. This is a slow burn story in every way. Love, friendship, loss, grief, real world violence, real world vs. real magic. And all of that wrapped up in a small town with perfect little bakery, stone bridge, lemon tarts and aromatic teas. This book is a wonderful journey through human emotions, believe in the good in world, believe in yourself. The characters are very human, they LOOK human (those beautiful curls and curves) and they are all perfectly imperfect. And that’s absolutely right. They will make you laugh, and cry a bit, and you’ll recognize yourself in them. What could you possibly want more in a book? All in all, perfect read for shutting the world out. It will leave you with a smile on your face and wanting more (wink, wink ) .
This was whimsical, magical, comforting and just an overall pleasant read. I really love Karla Nikole's writing and can't wait for what she writes up next.
I really enjoyed this book but it left a handful of things unexplained and ended abruptly. Like, so abruptly that I was in shock for a moment. Other than not knowing a few things, I was fairly happy. I hope there is a second book to finish this through better.
This book makes you want to curl up with your favorite blanket while getting lost in the pages of this whimsical story set in a small town about two friends finding their way back to each other. Kara continues to be a favorite author of mine. Her writing is so effortless with descriptions that make the story come alive. This was a sweet, magical book that was just what I needed. 4 Stars!
Set in a magical little town with a host of representation, this is a great book to snuggle down with under a cozy blanket and cup of tea. I loved the variety of characters and the fact that, while there was some mystery and drama, it was never stressful. Hope this author revisits this little town in the future.
I really enjoyed this book. It was so different from what I usually read. It had almost a mystical quality to it. I could resonate with what Violet was feeling. The conflict of going with what has always been defined and followed or to stray from that path and create your own one. There was no OW/OM drama. It was more of a conflict within ourselves. I am glad that the author didn't end the book with doing away with the hero's "curse", rather that was left as open ended and a gradual process. Ethnic and queer was represented well. It was not forced in the story.
"It isn’t that I like Jasper. I love him. Fundamentally and as a person. Who he is and what he means to me are so deeply rooted in my heart that I will always feel for him, no matter what. Does that make sense?”
“I don’t need someone to make me happy, Jas. I need someone who can sympathize and listen when I complain about toxic masculinity and my period. I need someone who walks through the forest with me in the middle of winter to sketch an old bridge. I need someone who encourages me when I have doubts in myself. It’s not about you making me happy. I can make myself happy. Simone’s lemon meringue makes me happy. It’s about you seeing me—truly accepting who I am and loving me for it. That’s what I need, Jasper, and you give me that. A thousand times over.”
(my formatting changes did not save for any of this, sorry...!)
I’m quite new to reviews, but this book deserves one! I rarely read heterosexual books I'm a weirdo! But after the Lore & Lust (currently) duology (which quickly earned its spot in my top 3 books) - and actually rooting for Giovanni and Cellina in the second book besides our lovely Haru & Nino, I was really compelled to start Love, Magic and Misfortune! Karla Nikole’s writing style is really unique and makes the reader want to see more all the time 💖
And this book did NOT disappoint either! The fact that it had several aspects similar to my life experience kept me really interested and I think just in general, this book can give hope to everyone out their ever doubting themselves or relationships that they thought were lost. And it’s not one of those “I need to change my life”/“Want to be more like myself” and suddenly everything works out and life is all happy books! It is based on real considerations, hesitations, realisations of past mistakes. The story actually incorporates these ideals and development in perfect ways as the characters progress their journey!
As I was getting closer to the end, I was seriously re-reading several bits more times just to immerse myself in the beauty this story holds! I didn’t want it to end, it was just so amazing! If not for my silly cold and the need to sleep, I would have gone through the whole book in a day!
Violet is not the sort of female lead who is just there to make the male lead shine or swoon into their arms at the first given moment. Or someone being annoyingly sappy or demanding. Their story is real and her reactions and decisions were always something that made you feel her emotions as if they were your own. She understood Jasper and was both looking out for his boundaries and never lost sight of her hope either. She is a real, down-to-earth woman, wanting to be her weird, cheerful self and find love from the person who sees her for what she is and not what society believes she should have. Which is reflected in this beautiful scene (warning: relationship goals‼️):
"I don’t need someone to make me happy, Jas. It’s about you seeing me - truly accepting who I am and loving me for it. That’s what I need, Jasper, and you give me that. A thousand times over."
And Jasper! The innocent intellectual (and secret writer). Can someone make him into a plushie so I can hug him all day please??? 🥰
The truth behind his “sickness”… I did NOT expect that and I LOVED it! Due to a childhood trauma, he is always thinking about what it all means for others and is scared to be selfish. That he is not more than a disgusting monster. The way he starts to find himself and let the walls crumble is just sooo adorable. But of course he had a secret charming and devilish man hiding in there! He also let his romantic side show on more occasion as time passed~ My favourite quote must be this:
“… but let’s pretend. If your curse broke, what’s the first thing you’d do?” *small skip to relevant answer* “Next, I… I would do everything in my power to show the person I love that they would be the main character in my life - that we would be the main characters together. If she wanted me…”
Also, can I just mention their first kiss being ruined by Jasper’s zealous inexperience and associated clumsiness - thank you! Again, not one of those: “so I’ve never kissed anyone before, but I love you, so now everything is sunshine and rainbows and perfect kisses”. But REALITY (and also finding bravery, which was great!). With a cute little study instead of sudden mastery in kissing - combined with the sweetest dialogue ☺️
As for side characters:
* René: Can we get more side characters like him, please? He is seriously the best and funniest character I’ve seen in a long time 😂 But also shrouded in mystery as also confirmed near the end!
* Simone: a proud trans, direct friend that we all need in our life: full of motivational speeches, but scared of her own potential changes. (Come on, the part where she tells Violet to go masturbate so she can get the frustration of Jasper out of her system! Tell me that’s not friendship goals 😂 ) Oh and did I mention she owns a bakery and creates her own tea blend at 23 after having said no to the pressured ideals about her future from her dad??!! Well done, girl!
Also, I know they were just on the side, but the background story of René and the coincidental meeting with Simone at the time was adorable! This is what they call “love finds you when you least expect it”!
* Freddie: finally a story where the bully only recognised his wrongs after therapy and admits that he needs it! Plus realizes the true intent behind those bullying thanks to said therapy. Btw, the part where he confesses and kisses Jasper on the cheek OMG! *secret 5 seconds last ship for these two* But it was great to see him admitting that the whole point was not to steal Jasper, but to find his own peace in a sense by admitting it out loud.
“Sorry…” Freddie grinned, his face flushed. “But thank you for listening. And happy early birthday. I’m glad you are leaving your house more often. I think it’s good.” He nodded once, turned and moved towards the doorway. As he passed Violet, he lifted his chin. “I did it in front of you so you don’t think I’m trying to steal him from you or something. I just needed him to know…”
It’s clear he understands that he is late with his feelings and actions. Even though he doesn’t (and neither do others) see it himself I think, he has matured since the beginning of the book. I hope he gets his own love story 💜
* Rosé: the perfect impersonation of the pressure many of us face during life from different sources: be it parents, family or just the environment in general. Even if she is strict though, I think she does not mean it most of the time. With their mother having died when they were young and father gone most of the time, she just unconsciously took over the mother role of the family I think. Trying to force what she believes best for Violet whilst emphasising “her own perfect life”. This becomes clear in the moments she is vulnerable and is acting like the sister she was meant to be (like when her world turns out not to be so perfect).
Overall, I was really immersed in this book and it kept me going all the time to find out and see more! The world building - even if mostly based on the real world - was really interesting and I could see myself visiting their small little town/city and having a nice Roseberry tea at Le Petit Sweet 🧁☕️💕
Ironically, there is a part where the characters are arguing about open-ended stories. And this one ends up being one of those exact stories! BUT! I really believe that there is an open door for more. Hopefully a second book where we will: - Learn more about the changes in Jasper’s curse - And about who René really is as I’m sure he has some secrets! 👀 - See Freddie return from a well-deserved trip with a handsome man - Learn about the whereabouts of Ginger’s grimoire - Also, am I the only one who found the occasional cat visitor by Jasper’s house suspicious??? - crest being scratched up + cat magically appearing, catching and eating the rat that attacked Jasper before??? 🧐
I you haven’t already read this book, stop hesitating and GO READ THIS MASTERPIECE 💖
This is a whimsical, fairytale-esque, childhood friends to lovers romance. The story itself is simple, and not in a “there’s nothing to keep my attention” kind of way, but in a “I could lose myself in the purity of their love” way.
We follow Violet and Jasper. Two friends that were separated at a young age when Jasper mysteriously becomes sick. Violet is never told what illness her best friend has, she just knows she isn’t allowed to see him anymore. Years pass by, but Violet never forgets him.
This story made me feel so cozy with the setting being in a little village. As always with Karla Nikole’s writing, there is no unnecessary drama while still giving us some pining. There is open communication, consent, clearly defined boundaries, and honesty.
We do get queer representation in some of the side characters. This friend group created their own little found family and I was rooting for all of them. There is mystery, magic, love, friendship, betrayal and family. If you want some whimsy to get lost in, I think this is a good choice for you.
This book was super cute! Overall I really enjoyed it! The clear communication between Violet & Jasper was really refreshing. I do wish we had gotten a bit more about Jasper & Violet hanging out & trying to break the curse. (Speaking of the curse, I totally thought he was going to turn into a bird at first. Idk why!) I feel like Jasper was kind of in the background at times, which was a bummer because I loved him! I also think the ending wrapped up a bit oddly, and we never really got a clear conclusion. The magic seemed to be very much in the background, I would have liked to explore that more. I also would have liked René to explain how he knew about Jasper’s curse, because what we got from him really made me curious. Like I said, overall I thought this book was super cute and enjoyable, I just wish it was a bit more rounded out & some of the storylines were explored more!

This was a really cute sort of modern fairytale, I loved the setting and the main characters I felt like the ending could have been more well rounded, it felt like it ended a little prematurely for a book that's supposedly a stand alone, but over all a very cute and cozy read. And hands down I would cast Timothee Chalamet as Jasper! His physical description was so on point with Timothee I almost think thats who the author was actually picturing when she wrote him lol
~•~ Clearly, we’re meant to be.” “A match made in misfortune.” ~•~
Y’all ever read a book where you’ve asked SO MANY QUESTIONS and only received scraps of answers; and so now you’re like Shia in that one Transformer movie, writing the symbols on the wall trying to piece them together to figure out what it all means?!?! - Yeah, that was me. -
When I figured out one part..that probably wasn’t that difficult for others but I’m just simple -lol- I was so excited! The way I screamed “I knew it!” to absolutely no one 😅 Then I guessed another and another, etc - the amount of bruises I have now from getting overly excited and ||accidentally|| hurting myself {really channeling those Violet vibes} - Great times.
I do wish it had been maybe one or two chapters longer, so we could have gotten a bit more on the curse and how it was changing. Or even an epilogue with a bit of a glimpse at their future to see how life looks; not only for Jasper & Violet, but also for Freddie, Simone & Rene. Tie up what felt like, to me, a couple loose ends. (So, my rating is more around 4.25 stars but we round up here)
•REGARDLESS•
This was endearingly cute, effortlessly funny, and romantically melancholy
It’s like a ✨magical “My girl” ✨🥰 without the heart shattering death.
I'll start by saying that I don't typically read romance books.. this was picked up largely because I was participating in a reading challenge.
I never thought I would love it.. but I did.
First line: Violet’s foot slipped against the tree trunk, but she quickly caught herself, scraping her knee and probably her stockings in the process.
Each of the characters here is beautifully flawed and, possibly, all the more special for it. I was charmed from the word 'go'. The relationships are entertaining, heartwarming, and so wonderfully done.. I found myself laughing, grieving, and sympathizing with them at every turn. It's impressive because, despite my usual lack of interest in most romance novels, it is that quality that really makes this story shine. The simplicity, strength, and conviction of their feelings (despite the circumstances) swept me away.
Ten points to Griffindor, Karla Nikole!
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a sweet, funny, fairy tale sort of romance.
Happy reading! And don't forget to check out my blog for more book reviews and recommendations @ ReadBetwixtWords.com
I absolutely loved this book. It was the perfect blend of romance, loss and finding yourself along a very jagged and magical path. The characters were so well fleshed out it felt as though I was peering in on their lives daily, the writing made them feel so tangible and like I was watching their story play out rather than reading it. I got so lost in this little corner of the world that Nikole has created for these characters, that I never wanted to leave. I need like 10 more books just to know what happens to Violet and Jasper for the rest of their lives. An easy 5 stars.
OMG I REALLY LOVE THIS BOOKKKK!!!! 💐🐀 (IF U NEED A SIGN TO READ THIS BOOK, THIS. IS. IT)
I don't really give reviews but here I am :). I just love how this book radiates positive energy even though it tackles serious issues and I just think that all main characters are very wholesome 💖. I want to meet my own Jasper someday (minus the mouse part hahaha).
Either way, this is a veryyy good book (some small parts are dragging) BUT overall, sooo good! 💕💕💕
I am in awe and adore the beauty of Karla Nikole´s writing. It is one of a kind, this is a thing of beauty ❤
This is the story about Violet and Jasper. Oh, sweet, sweet, lonely and tortured Jasper. Their journey is all about the power of love, the power of trust and friendship.
An absolutely wonderful lovestory with adorable, fierce and brave characters. Highly recommended!
I instantly fell in love with Violet and Jasper and was annoyed by Freddie as soon as he opened his mouth. I laughedout loud when Violet called him one of the B words😄😄😄. This is exactly how vivid the characters are and how effortlessly I was able to submerge myself in this thrilling story. Instantly gripping page turner ❤
I loved this story, the characters and the atmosphere of this book. Also the writing is great. Sometimes I felt like there were things left unsaid and I wish we would have gotten a little more but overall I enjoyed this a lot.
I have mixed feelings about this book. I was really enjoying it, I was excited that Violet and Jasper were getting closer to figuring everything out, and then it just ended very abruptly, almost in the middle of a conversation. I hope there is a sequel planned someday that will finish this story
LOVED EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS BOOK!!! The story was great and fun, I laughed and I even shed a few tears…Not sure exactly what I was expecting BUT it was everything I needed in a read to get lost and just maybe believe in a little magic ✨
3.5⭐️ it was cute but a lot of things felt unfinished and open. It also ended so abruptly that I just kinda sat and stared at my kindle for a good few minutes in surprise.
I really enjoyed the first half of this book. Along side Violet you’re figuring out what jaspers illness is and what her family history is. Because of this mystery I kept wanting to read it. After the first half of the book a switch happened. Because the mysteries were solved there was more room to focus on the blossoming romance. Even though I really liked it, it felt very different from the first half and didn’t keep me wanting to read like the beginning. The side plot about the break ins felt very random. I thought they were leading up to something big but when they figured out it was Jillian I was quite disappointed. The ending also felt pretty random and abrupt, I would’ve liked to know more about the curse and see them trying to break it. It could’ve still ended in the same conclusion, that being with people helps, but now it was just like okay there’s a curse, that kinda sucks I guess. At the first half I was almost sure that this was gonna be a five star read but I was let down by the sudden change and just wished that there was more of a conclusion or big reveal. The two halves, in my opinion, feel like two completely different books, mystery and romance. It would’ve been better if the two were mixed up a bit more instead of closing the mystery and then moving on to romance.

A surprisingly good exploration of grief and love.
On the surface Love, Magic, and Misfortune is a cozy magically mystery. Below that is a lovely story about friendship and acceptance, forgiveness, change, and grief. The writing is accessible, funny, charming, and sweet.
Violet is a great character. Strong in her beliefs, loyal and caring to the people she loves, and with a deep admiration of her late grandmother. Throughout the novel we she her journey with grief done in such a subtle way I appreciated way more than anticipated.
Jasper is mysterious and sympathetic. It took me a while to warm up to him because of the whole “stay away from me” trope but I ended up really loving his character and watching his growth was so gratifying.
Now Freddie is the odd standout. I will not spoil anything but his character quickly became so interesting and I wish we had more time with him.
While reading, it took a while for me to get into this novel until I came the conclusion if you read this with the idea it’s a life of life anime, it’ll get so much better. (Not that it wasn’t enjoyable before.) Fans of Fruits Basket will absolutely love this!
My only gripe with it is the ending. Abrupt and somewhat ambiguous, I didn’t feel the warm conclusion I assumed was coming based off how warm and cozy the entirety of the book was. The ending isn’t bad. It’s sweet, the chapters leading up were great, just expected more.
In all, this is a hidden gem. A novel with lovely subtle writing, surprisingly funny bits, and kind moments about connection and people.
Violet and Jasper were childhood best friends who were parted by Jasper’s mysterious illness when they were nine.
Now, Violet’s grandmother has just died and left Vi her home. Violet is there to stay and she wants to rekindle her friendship with Jas.
There are witches and persecutors in the past and a curse. The magic in the book was largely unexplained and was largely absent except for the curse. That disappointed me.
The book is a lovely exploration of friendship, deep connections, and authenticity.
The book started out so strong. The writing was fantastic, the characters lovable. Also the themes that were being explored were fantastic.
But the last couple of chapters ruined it for me. We didn't get a conclusion on most things. Magic, family history and Rene. None of those were even given a second thought. And if this book was a part of a series it would have made sense but it's a standalone. Also its not even open ended, it just felt that the last few chapters of the book was missing
This is such a charming story! It still has its ugliness in terms of some of the events, the characters don't live a completely charmed life, but I love the quiet romance and acceptance in this - I found reading it soothing and greatly looked forward to having a moment to pick my kindle back up. If only I could stay in this world a little longer.
