Who knew a fake holiday relationship could be so fun?

Kayla Summers has had enough of her mother’s insistence that she find a man and get married. At thirty-three, she’s a successful attorney and has a fantastic life. Knowing her mother will grill her constantly over the upcoming holidays about her single existence, she dreads the visits home.

Carter Manheim is a self-proclaimed bachelor, dead set on seducing every beautiful woman in Manhattan. And why not? His parents’ disastrous marriage and divorce proved that lifelong commitments just aren’t viable. As his mother’s health worsens, his only wish is to give her one last happy holiday, even if it entails bringing home a girlfriend.

When Kayla’s sexy neighbor proposes they take each other home for the holidays as fake partners, she’s floored. However, getting her mother off her back is her number one priority and she agrees to the arrangement. Now, if she can only keep her heart from becoming emotionally entangled with the player of the century, she’ll be just fine…

This is a 40,000 word book filled with fast-paced, fake relationship shenanigans, and steamy scenes designed to melt your Kindle. The main character’s mother has late-stage cancer and there are adult language and situations, so please consider that before you read. Here’s hoping this funny, romantic story can give you a few hours of escape during the holidays! Enjoy!

This is definitely a new record for me but I surprised myself with how quickly I decided to push the breaks on this one, which was almost immediately. This makes me sad. I almost feel embarrassed by my inability to stay faithful. Firstly, this is not a bad book, by any means. I hope to stress that, and of course, I can't speak for the remainder of the story. I really enjoyed the first few pages from Kayla's point of view. She's a got a great girl group of friends, the story looks good and the romance looks like it'll have a spicy development. Also really love that she's in her 30s and has a normal body type, I'm hopeful it evolves into a body positivity scenario. The blurb informs that we have a womaniser male MC who enjoys a revolving door of female company as and when he wants it for the taking, but when we first meet him on page, he's in the middle of a sexcapade with a gorgeous girl, and after greeting the heroine, heads right back to it while she 'overhears' him. No 'on-page' sex scene in all its explicit detail between the MMC and OW just to be clear, just him obviously eager to make the most out of a heady night (and does so apparently enthusiastically) but it's definitely not for me, and never has been. As I often say, I don't like seeing the male MC with other women when a romance begins. And it literally happened when the romance began. *Palms forehead* For a seasonal novella (of limited size), one really has to question the need for showing us a MMC's pleasure-seeking lifestyle. Why not just share retrospectively or have him indulge his latest affair before the story begins, extra points if it does one better and waits even longer, in no immediate risk of perishing from any level of sex deprivation.

No poaching, no breaching, no exceptions. Well, maybe some, like if the heroine FINALLY gets the role reversal position of being the cat who frequently gets the cream by being the lass about town with just as much sex appeal. It's tiresome to keep reading about heroes of this variety. If she's not his heroine, I really don't want to be reading about the trysts he delights in nor how attracted he is to other women, especially when the heroine already seems to find him so irresistible. I'm not sure how long they've been neighbours but an educated guess tells me a long time, and if he hasn't noticed her in any attentive way in that time, one has to assume he didn't find her interesting enough to pursue and she's not the type he'd typically go for (so far removed from his usual physically flawless type). I like my heroes interested, curious and drawn in by the heroine, if not committed and in immediate pursuit as romance is a game of time and pace. And he may become that but the earlier developments bothered me so continue I shan't. I also don't believe the hero is one who grows on you. I honestly would have continued reading had it not been for that little introduction, and I'm so disappointed. Again! Like I said, this keeps happening to me. Commitment might be this hero's worst nightmare, but he's mine so off I trot, looking for another romance to read. *sigh*

Hello, super cute holiday romance! Ayla Asher has brought a hot, steamy fake dating novella with lots of snark, characters who grow on you, and did I mention the steamy scenes? Kayla’s mom won’t let up about how she needs to find a boyfriend. Her neighbor across the hall, man-whore Carter, is in a bind when his mother’s health takes a turn for the worse. All she wants is to meet his special someone for Christmas. Too bad Carter never dates the same girl twice. They come up with an arrangement, and (you guessed it)… the line between real and not real quickly starts to blur. This was a great, quick holiday read that I thoroughly enjoyed!

DNF at 3%

The heroine arrives home and runs into her super hot neighbor who is taking the trash out with his shirt off. He proceeds to insult her looks and then tell her he's joking. Nevermind the fact that he came out right when she gets home so I'm pretty sure he is waiting for her and thinks she's attractive. But SHE is definitely horny for him. Doesn't matter that he has a different woman over constantly and a semi-undressed woman comes out of this guy's apt to lure him back to bed. She doesn't even seem to mind. She just thinks she's not attractive enough for him. 🤮

How can she think "he would never be attracted to me" when she's observing him being a manwhore?

Why not, "what a douche canoe. Who flirts with their neighbor when there's another women in their bed!? Gross. I might think he's objectively good looking, but his manwhore ways and 'I'm just joking' makes me want to urp. Let's hold out for a better man."

The heroine has to listen to the manwhore having sex with other women!? Including ON PAGE!? WTAF!?

Nope. This book is trash. Go straight to romance jail.

Ugh. Bad self talk AND lusting after a nasty man!?

*ARC received in exchange of an honest review*

This was the first book I read of Ayla Asher and I must say I really loved the way she wrote it. It was so synchronised and in flow that I felt like flowing with the story (I hope I am not being weird).
The character building was good and their personal characters made them very intriguing. Kayla being a self deteriorated person who feels sorry for her physical appearance and Carter being the typical playboy who don't know the R of relationship.

They both bonded and made a fantastic couple. How they helped each other to overcome their insecurities and finally lead the path of love❤️

12/2022 - This audiobook is 99¢ on chirp right now.

11/16/2021 - Note: I listened to this as part of a box set (exclusive to Chirp.) of the series. At the time of this review it’s still on sale for $3.99. Ebook available in KU.

This was my first experience with Ayla Asher. This is best enjoyed when you’re in a mood for a shorter book with *lots* of sex. Neighbors, and somewhat frenemies, Carter & Kayla decide to embark on a fake relationship. Carter’s mom is dying of cancer and Kayla’s mom is a judgmental harpy - this is a way to make the moms happy that their children have found love. Set over Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays this was a fun addition to my holiday-themed listening.

As with fake relationship tropes - things become more serious. While this had more sex than I usually prefer (whoah was it hot though), I appreciated that Asher gave plenty of “get to know you” for the MCs. This ends on an HFN, but as the other two books are centered on Kayla’s friends - I’m hoping there will be more about Carter & Kayla throughout the series.

Narration:
I enjoyed the duet narration by Kai Kennicott & Wen Ross. They brought together a seamless production that works really well with Asher’s writing. Both have wonderful voices and it was an easy listen.

A sweet book with plenty of yummy heat, heartbreak, and seriously tender moments. Tears might not happen often but they will happen. Kayla and Carter are neighbors who decide to use each other to make their families happy. Each comes with baggage that a parental unit instigated - Kayla has self-image issues; Carter has problems with commitment.

As for the narrators, they were fantastic! I could just eat Wen Ross up! That voice is great! Kai was also terrific. The editing with the chuckles, laughs, and other noises overlayed with the narration were well done!

Audiobook review:

His Holiday Pact was a heartwarming read that is perfect for any season.

I love how Asher writes her characters, giving them flaws and struggles so many of us deal with, making them relatable and easy to root for. Filled with feel good moments and a HEA that we all hope for, this was an incredible story.

I also loved how the Audible version of this book had both a male and a female narrator for the two main characters. It was really unique and brought the story to life even more. I highly recommend this to any fans of romance!

Oh the holidays, the stress of seeing family. For Carter and Kayla both of them have reason to buried their feet in the snow, the stress of dealing with it all, being single and over thirty. Kayla a wonderful character that has to deal with insecurities and low self esteem. Carter the forever playboy that doesn’t want the fun to end. When visiting your family for the holidays and everyone trying to give you advice to help move your love life forward. This book was all warm and fuzzy. They had some laugh out loud moments. A lot of sexy scenes that will jingle your bells. I surely enjoyed this story it was easy to read and very entertaining. The supporting characters were well written and I may have wanted to slap a character or two not even going to pretend I didn’t want to. The chemistry of the two main characters were off the charts. I know after reading this one, everyone will be asking Santa if they can have a neighbor like Carter or Kayla. So go ahead plug the Christmas lights on your tree, get a cup of eggnog or hot chocolate, and buckle up for one hell of a ride.

Kayla Summers, a lawyer, is a strong willed woman. But underneath her persona, she has self esteem issues due to her mother always commenting on her weight, appearance and still not married.
Carter Manheim is an actor, narrator and a confirmed bachelor. He wanted to make his mother happy before her death. She always wanted him to have that special someone in his life.
So? Fake boyfriend, fake girlfriend, fake relationship. what could go wrong?
Kayla and Carter is fun, excited and steamy. They really connected and had fun together. But this is only supposed to be fake.
Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross are very entertaining narrators. They really brought this story to life! They capture every emotion, every voice. Each character's personality was perfection! Thank you for the great listen! I wish i could give 10 stars. I was gifted this through Story Origin and offered my honest review.

His Holiday Pact by Ayla Asher
Starts out with Carter and his mother is dying of cancer and the boys think this will be her last holiday. Carter has an idea and take it up with his neighbor-Kayla.
She is also single and in her 30's and has been getting hounded by her mother that she needs to get married and have children.
Carter and Kayla agree to form a holiday pact where they spend time at one another's houses during the holidays to get their relatives off their backs.
Problem is they are each becoming sexually attracted to one another. Sex scenes and situations.
Like the idea of the pact and it's cute in a way. Very predictable.

I love how charming Carter is. I also loved how he built up Kaylas self esteem. This relationship was one that had been forming well before meeting these characters. The two complemented each other well. I love how they each brought something to the other for amazing character growth. There were highs and lows that both characters had to face. This story was very well written, had great world building and character relationship growth. I love how easily it was to read and enjoy. I'll be reading the rest of the series as well as others from this author.

I love how Kayla was not your typical lawyer...she was a real woman, curvy and a little overweight, not married, and her mom was ready for her to find the right man and get married. She had 2 great girlfriends that were her only social outlet. Then...she hooks up with her gorgeous neighbor and sparks begin to fly! I enjoyed their escapades together and her visit with his family. Fun reading.

QOTD: What is your favorite holiday film?

𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁…
❤️ Fake Holiday Relationship
🤍 Neighbors to Lovers
❤️ Anti-Relationship MCs
🤍 3rd Act Youknowwhat

Both Kayla and Carter need a fake date to get their families off their backs for settling down.
Both don’t want to settle down.
I mean, Carter is 35 and Kayla is his first…fake girlfriend…girlfriend ever.
Like, wtf?
And I mean the first two chapters Carter’s with another woman.

I’ll be honest, in romance I do NOT like that. 🤷🏻‍♀️

And after we get some amazing scenes together, it just fizzles out as Carter tucks tail and avoids Kayla during the hardest time of his life.
And Kayla is just okay with that?
I dunno, this one just didn’t do it for me.

Narration:
Honestly, the narration saved this one for me along with the short length.
I may not have even finished this one without the audio.
BUT Kai and Wen completely brought these characters to life and added SO MUCH to the story.
Finding out they’re a couple in the cherry on top because I could sense their chemistry.
Wooooo. 🔥

This was a lovely story of two people who were meant to be. She wanted him for who he was at his core with only one promise—commitment and monogamy.

He had scars from his past and it took him awhile to see what he had with her. I also LOVED how he helped her find her self worth. After years of berating from her mom his consistency of telling her she was stunning as is helped build her up also.

I loved also that while they broke up it was amicable and simple. Gave them the path to simply put the pieces back together instead of doing something stupid that one of them had to grovel for.

This gem was narrated by Wen Ross and Kai Kennicott. I enjoy them both and it had been awhile since I have listened to them!

His and hers Holiday Pact

What a wonderful quick read book. If you don’t like graphic scenes about a journey that started out as friends then moved to friends with benefits, then take a pass because it’s quite a steamy book.

The author did a wonderful job of developing characters! Kayla is a beautiful, accomplished attorney, her Mom did a heck of a number on our heroine, if it came down as a pitcher and batter -Kayla’s mom has struck her out way too many times. Constantly recommending weight loss programs etc., how Kayla a successful lawyer is anything but beautiful is a crime, but you feel her pain and her subconscious when trying to believe that her friends and Carter definitely don’t see her that way and as the story progresses you find out Kayla breaks out of the prison her Mother’s word created.

Carter, is the sex on a stick neighbor, we are introduced quickly to the fact that he’s good in bed and likes model types, flirting, and he’s an actor. Carter does commercials, reads audiobooks, and he used to do to plays which he he enjoys!

Carter’s Mother is ill with with Cancer, and after the rough treatment, slight remission, it has returned shortly before Thanksgiving, and will not do chemotherapy again. Carter has an older brother, they’re close, and his brother is married. A word that scares Carter! When the boys were young their Dad left, leaving both intimacy and commitment issues.

Both Kayla and Carter have been nagged by their mothers to settle down, and that’s how their story of being a fake couple is launched.

They agree to be “fake” in love and in a relationship for the holidays. Kayla has 2 great friends, that are in on their story. I like the friendship part of this story. You can picture New York City and it fits so well in the plot. I enjoyed these strong women, enjoyed their talks, their honesty and their sense of humor! It’s great to read about strong successful women, and how they care for one another.

Carter, struggles with doing the painful things that must be done when you are preparing for a death of a loved one. His brother has Patty his wife, but, Kayla’s heartfelt caring of Carter, brings tears to your eyes.

It’s truly a loving story, so much is so real, it’s easy to feel like you are a part of the story.

There is tension at work, both Kayla and Carter change, some as a result of Carter’s Mom’s illness but mostly because of Kayla. Kayla’s changes come from realizing that her Mom really did number on her.

So sit back and enjoy, I hope I didn’t give out to many spoilers. There’s so much to their story, and there’s sadness, not just because of Carter’s mom. Stay safe, enjoy your holidays. Hoping everyone decides to stay and home and read! So we can stop the rising curve of COVID-19. #stayhomeandread

Wonderful Story & Narration🎧 A Heartfelt Delight!

His Holiday Pact
Manhattan Holiday Loves, Book 1
By: Ayla Asher
Narrated by: Kai Kennicott, Wen Ross

Wow, this is an awesome book, while the story is set around the holidays it can be enjoyed anytime of the year, it is so much more than a holiday story and romance. This is my first book written by Ayla Asher, she is a gifted author, the storylines she created are interesting and original, the book grabbed my attention right from the start and held it captive straight to the end. The characters are realistic, easy to relate and connect with. I adored Kayla Summers, she is a strong and successful career woman, her one weakness is her self image, her mother’s constant insults did a number on her self esteem. She actually got accustomed to writing things off as oh she is not pretty enough or he is out of her league. This included her hot and so swoon-worthy neighbor, Carter Manheim, she sees the type of women who parade in and out of his place and knows she does not stand a chance. Carter is a player and professes to never get into a serious relationship. When his mothers cancer returns he wants to do something to make her happy, that would be to show her he has someone special in his life. He and Kayla got to talking and come up with a pact, to be each others fake boyfriend/girlfriend for when they visit their family for the upcoming holidays. I loved these two together, the chemistry between them was undeniable and smoking hot. I loved how the story plays out, it is nicely plotted and there is never a dull moment with plenty of drama, a touch of angst, some great humor, some heartfelt and emotional moments, some sexy times and a wonderful romance. Ayla Asher, thank you for this great story, the laughs and the emotional rollercoaster ride.

I listened to the Audible edition, Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross are fabulous narrators and voice artists. They do an awesome job portraying the characters, bringing them to life, humanizing them, giving each their own voice and personality. Their duet performance enhances the story another level, you could hear the chemistry between the characters as well as their emotions and passion. They are entertaining storytellers and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another wonderful listen🎧

Ayla Asher, where have you been hiding? This is my first listen of hers, and I loved it! Quick, easy fake romance, and I was invested completely in this couple. Kayla is constantly being bothered by her mother about finding a boyfriend. Her neighbor across the hall, Carter has a sick mother who would love to see her son settled before she goes. So what do these too do? They make a deal for the holidays. When the lines between real and fake begin to blur, what happens though? Will their love survive past Christmas? I love these two. Kayla is not the model perfect woman. She is ordinary which makes this so much more realistic and fun for me! Carter, even though his reputation proceeds him turns out to have much more to him than expected. The families are warm and friendly and interfering and it's one of the best Christmas in July listens I have had!

Brought to life by Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross, the story is pure entertainment. These two bring out the chemistry in the characters from the first time they speak. They give the listen that feeling of warmth as well as passion, giving their characters good foundations. I loved their performance.

Rating: 2.5/5 ⭐️
Spice: 1.5/5 🌶️

I am happy there was a curvy girl as the main character. I also appreciate her being raw about her insecurities. But this book was under 200 pages and I think half of it was spent with this girl calling herself fat.

This would have made more sense if she was a decade younger. I just don’t see a successful 30 something corporate woman taking no prisoners at work to get ahead allowing people to treat her like garbage at home.

The plot was solid enough for me to give this a 2.5 but the relationship was so toxic. Poor Kayla deserved more from just about everyone in this including herself.

Fake relationship. I love this trope. Yes, it’s totally predictable, but it’s such a fun journey. I love watching the confirmed bachelor fall from grace. Brought to his knees by an unsuspecting siren. That’s exactly what happened to neighbours Kayla and Carter when they make a pact to fake date for the benefit of their interfering parents, who want them to be happy and settled in love. My first read by Ayala Asher, and it was sweet, sexy and entertaining, I loved how Kayla never denied the possibility of falling in love, not so naive that she would think it an impossibility. Carter on the other hand was probably going to deny love and marriage to his dying day. I listened to the audio version which was narrated by that fabulous duet, Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross, both such relatable narrators.

I honestly cannot express how much I absolutely adore this book. It was an absolutely wonderful read. I stayed up until 2 AM to read it, I just couldn't put it down.

Kayla was very relatable in the fact that she wasnt a size 2 and had insecurities as most women do. She was a lovable character. I loved how the author could have made Carter a typical "player a**hole" who put Kayla down and then in the end said he was only being mean because he liked her and that nonsense. But that wasnt the case, he was a genuinely sweet person to her and never put her down. I literally cried reading this book and during some parts my heart felt so full and others my heart broke.

I cannot wait to read more books by this author, I honestly feel like I will NOT be disappointed

AUDIO REVIEW.....

Main characters in this book are Kayla and Carter, read beautifully by Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross. Can I just say, Wen can read me to sleep anytime, that voice ......
The story although only 4 &1/2 hours on audio is short compared to most audios i listen to, but I didn’t feel cheated. It flowed really well, and I lost track of the time as I listened to the story unfold.
Carter has commitment issues, and I couldn’t really blame him. Watching his parents marriage fall apart, and then the divorce, it’s enough to put a man off for life. And Carter’s got enough lust to go around, why have one when you can have many?
Kayla has a great job and a pretty good life, but if she’s not married then her mother thinks she hasn’t really achieved anything!
Being neighbours and friends, they band together and pretend to be a couple for the Christmas season. But Kayla knows it’s not real, Carter never dates the same girl twice, and she doubts he’d date her anyway! And she’s only helping him out, it’s sad about his mother, so anything Kayla can do to help Carter make his mother’s life happy is ok with her. And anyway he’s keeping her mother off of her back.
It’s fun, it’s saucy, it’s sad in places, it’s saucy, and it’s a holiday romance (and did I mention it’s steamy?!)
I listened to most of the audio whilst walking to work (and I did stumble a few times at where the story went😉) but there were also a few moments I had to laugh.....
It’s a predictable Christmas story. But it’s well worth a listen too.
Have a feeling it’s going to a favourite on my Christmas list (yes I have a reading/listening list for most occasions)
And I think I’m going to have to get the book too.

Tropes: he falls first, fake dating, one bed, holiday novella
Dual POV 1st person

His Holiday Pact is a sweet and spicy novella focusing on Kayla, an attorney and her playboy neightbor Carter. In an effort to get Kayla’s mother off her back about her weight/how she looks and to comfort Carter’s dying mother, they agree to pretend to be each other’s SO for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday. But when their fake dating turns to real feelings, will they stay together?

This was an audiobook🎧 for me, and while I appreciated the dual narration, there was something about the MMC’s voice that reminded me of an actor from SNL and it made it hard for me to get into the story sometimes because I just kept imaging the actor. Other than that I think the narrators did a good job bringing the story to life.

The storyline was ok, but the spicy scenes seemed a little childish and repetitive to me. The biggest thing that sticks out is that she “gushed” at least 3 times and it just made me cringe, but I think that might be because it was an audiobook- like if I’d read it I might feel differently.
I wasn’t a huge fan of this book, mainly because I don’t really like stories with insecure, low self-esteem FMCs, especially when it’s due to weight. I’m really picky about plus size FMC stories because to me there’s a fine line between representation and objectification. I mean, you understand right off the bat that Kayla’s issues are because her mom is super shitty to her so I totally get it, all I’m saying is just those kinds of stories aren’t ones I enjoy. I know other’s do and that can be cathartic/healing for them.

A lot of my complaints/feelings about this book are probably summed up with “it’s not you, it’s me”, so take that for what you will.

REVIEW
Score: 3/5
POV: Dual
Heat Level: 5/5
Tropes: Neighbors; Fake Dating; Lawyer FMC; Audio Narrator/Actor MMC

Likes:
* with the quality of the writing and the story this was actually the perfect length. I typically stay away from novellas unless it’s a holiday book and I can also tend to be fairly critical of them but this felt like it had enough plot and it wasn’t overly wordy or filled of filler.
* this was spicier than I was expecting!

Dislikes:
* how immature the MMC is. There’s literally a part where he basically admits he’s super immature. He’s 35 and thinks like a 25 year old.

Overall this was average. The plot was decent and it definitely was a good mix of plot, spice, and holiday (to make it a Christmas romance). I really disliked how immature the MMC was. We’re supposed to be left feeling at the end that he “grew up” a bit but honestly I’m not convinced. I decided to read this because I’ve owned it on my kindle for like at least 2 years if not longer lol.

A sweat easy read. Carter, the male lead a typical man whore actor (who narrates audio books!) who lives next door to a normal woman, curves and all. Both have issues with their parents but for different reasons. Their pact to have a fake relationship to make their respective families happy over the holiday period.
I received this as an audio book. Wouldn’t normally pick a book this length in audio as it’s a short story and we all know how expensive they can be and I like to get more hours! However, the audio format is done in my fave format of a duet by the fantastic team of Wen Ross and Kai Kennicott. So far I have enjoyed all audio books by the pair and this is no different. So if you’re looking for an easy read to take you away from the normal drudgery of everyday life it’s worth a read or in my case listen.

Kayla takes a verbal beating from her mom. Via phone or in person. It's always the same, her weight, how she dresses, her age. But she is successful in her career and she loves what she does as well as she like seeing her gorgeous neighbor, although she takes their banter to heart and thinks she's not good enough for him.

Carter is sexy, successful in his acting career and has as many women as he wants, but he's losing the one woman he adores and loves.....his mother.

He meets his neighbor in their local bar and concocts a fake relationship. But what happens when fake is realer than anything you've ever had? What happens when you've learned how to set someone free when you love them that much? And what happens when the girl you love is better than anything you ever dreamed of, but she let you go?

Beautiful story of friendship, love and loss. Spicy and wonderful, a great read.

This is book 1 in Asher's Manhattan Holiday Loves series and I love it! The narration was outstanding - loved the dual narrators! The storyline was sweet, sexy, sad and satisfying. I loved Kayla's character. Her humor was great and I loved the strength that her character developed thru this read. I hate that she was so critical of herself but I get that was part of the character growth. A heartwarming holiday themed romance that ignites some sexy scenes and satisfy your romance reading heart!

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
