With stakes this high, humanity doesn't need a hero. They need someone who can win.
**Complete 5-book series + 3 prequel novellas + a bonus short story = over 500,000 words of adventure.**
Willem Jaantzen has everything he could ever ask for: his goddaughter is safe, his businesses are thriving, and the upper crust of Bulari seem to have finally forgotten his notorious past. Until, that is, his oldest rival turns up murdered and the blame—and champagne—begins to flow.
It turns out Thala Coeur died as she lived: sowing chaos. And when a mysterious package bearing her call sign shows up on Jaantzen’s doorstep, he and his crew are quickly swallowed up in a web of lies, betrayals, and interplanetary politics.
It’ll only take one stray spark to start another civil war in the underworld, and Jaantzen is the only man who can stop it. If, that is, he’s willing to give up everything he’s worked for.
The Bulari Saga is a five-book series featuring gunfights, dinner parties, explosions, motorcycle chases, underworld intrigue, and a fiercely plucky found family who have each other's backs at every step. Perfect for fans of The Expanse, Firefly, and The Godfather. This boxed set also includes the three prequel novellas and a bonus short story.

An evil woman known to one and all as BLACKHEART, and a suitcase with something unknown in it.
This is where it all began. With an evil woman and a suitcase with a dangerous secret hidden within. Suddenly a game begins called 'who can we trust'. No one is certain of what the true facts are. Is Blackheart really dead? If she is, who killed her?
What's the big deal with the suitcase? It's been delayed and hidden in a shipment going offworld but that's just the start of its journey. Willem Jaantzen (the main character) finds this case fascinating, however he hears a rumour that someone opened one and was killed in the resulting explosion. Now he wants his case carefully examined for a safe way in. Evidently it's contents, whatever they are, are worth killing over.
Between being harassed by the sister of Blackheart, and the crazy amount of people who want that suitcase, Jaantzen has his hands full.
The tension and fear of all those who know what's truly at stake here is incredible, it's almost as if you can hear the music that you get in movies where the bad guys are coming and you want to warn the ones who have no idea, but you can't...oh I loved it!
I love the steadily increasing level of threat that runs through these books, as gradually higher ranking and more brutally ruthless gang leaders come out of the woodwork towards a true clash of the titans.
I really enjoyed how these books grabbed my attention. The battles in this series of books is so brilliantly written that they left me panting for more, which is always a great feeling! I felt as if I was watching all the violence occur as I hid behind a handy tree right there where the action was! It was exhilarating and yet mesmerising all at the same time.
When you find an author whose books talk to your heart and mind so well, keep in touch with them and always, always buy their books, that's my advice anyway!
A little bit hard boiled detective mystery, a bit gangster action thriller, and a whole lot of sci-fi political intrigue plus some crazy stuff that is just plain fun like murdercopters. Space opera with a darker, grittier feel and cold realities, juxtapositioned with all the feels of found family and earned loyalty.
Jessie Kwak has built a complex, fascinating world populated with nuanced characters I'd like to meet, and a few I'd rather avoid. Watching the relationships and alliances continue to shift and the characters grow has been an amazing trip. Such a great ensemble cast - they grow on you, honest. Not good guys necessarily, but despite criminal histories they are not bad guy anti-heroes either. Dragged kicking and screaming into a situation maybe, othertimes, yeah, they dive right in.
This series is an excellent example of how a master storyteller can elevate characters and story elements that at first glace appear ordinary and trope into a complex, richly imagined, fast paced story you can't put down. Characters with complex motivations and some very peculiar alliances of necessity. Plot twists you thought you predicted only for everything to go sideways. Each book has a fully contained plot, but they build on each other towards an epic conclusion to the overarching plot that threads its way throughout - so read them in order, and make sure you have time set aside, because you are going to get dragged in!
This is a fantasic boxed set, well worth picking up. The stories involve Willem Jaantzen, who has risen from nothing and is well respected by his fellow gangsters. He loves his goddaughter Starla Dusai and counts on her assistance, while problem solver Manu Juric and several other key employees make a great team that will get whatever needs doing done. These are exciting, fast paced stories with gangster families, intrigue, religious zealots, and the chaos caused by Willem’s enemy, Thala Coeur. With well developed characters, a fascinating world, and lots of action, I loved these stories and look forward to reading more by this author.
A very well written saga of organised crime group, corrupt politicians, aliens, murderous religious zealots and general murder mayhem and double cross after double cross. A superior piece of work maintaining a decent standard despite the length. Recommended.
This set is a treasure! With each book the plot becomes more compelling, the action becomes more gripping, the characters become more developed and memorable and engaging. These are books you can binge read and never want to put down.
Another fine read from Jessie Kwak.Another book that I have a hard time setting aside. Following characters I truly enjoy in their adventures makes the Bularj series very entertaining.
What a fabulous surprise to stumble upon this saga! Tremendous characters fully fleshed out an battling each other in turf wars! Really want to know what happens next though ...
This is a terrific read. Stories that pull you right into the action and make you care what happens next. The author paints such a complete picture all the senses are involved, the world she has created here comes alive and I hope to visit again, I was left wanting more.
Wow! Think of a Godfather-esque crime world set on a slightly nicer version of Star Wars' Tatooine and you'll be in the right (but definitely dangerous) neighborhood. This was excellent.
Fast forwarding a few years from the Nanshe Chronicles, Kwak drops us back into the same universe and a slightly different cast of characters. Willem Jaantzen is a gangster with ambitions to go straight -- or at least something that looks like it. Scarred by tragedy, he dotes on his goddaughter -- the daughter of Lasadi and Raj from the first set of books -- who in turn is driven to find her own place in a dangerous, deception-ridden world.
More fine writing brings to life not just a complex and ever-shifting set of plot lines but also the evolution of increasingly complex characters. We get to see not just what they do, but get increasing glimpses into who they are. And it’s great entertainment.
Kwak’s ability to sustain high standards over thousands of pages is exemplary. I wonder if this doesn’t have a lot to do with how the books are spaced out (no pun intended) across time -- giving her the space (sorry) to hone her writing in a way may indie/self-published authors don’t take or don’t have. When not writing for herself, Kwak is a professional copy-/ghost-writer (“with a novel-writing habit”) and offers advice to aspiring authors. Her discipline and skills shine through in this series of excellent stories.
