This book just didn't measure up to the others in the series. The couple - meh. The villain only seemed insane UNTIL the nifty twist. Secondary characters saved this book in my opinion. I do enjoy how this writing duo tosses in surprises and unexpected plot twists. They also do a good job of keep an overarching plot moving forward within the bounds of each book. These COULD be read individually, but there is great connection to other stories without sacrificing the momentum of the current novel.

Each of these journeys takes us down not only the road of human nature but one of self discovery for each of the Luciano's and the women they meet along the way.
The characters are well developed and the stories are an intriguing blend of romance and survival in a world turned upside down.

Flame Road starts out with a woman suffering from amnesia and panic - the action and unique character development continues into a beautiful story complete with scary skinheads and the evolution of a love story. The entire story is well written and stands alone as well as fitting nicely into the Scorch Road series.

FLAME ROAD by Toby Neal and Emily Kimelman. A Scorch Series # 5 about Cash and Jolene or Sunshine as he calls her.
Devastation from the Scorch Flu has led Cash and his dog Tiny to search the woods. A woman with a swastika burned into scalp, from a group of cultists being blame for this flu. Cash mantra " not my problem" but Tiny his dog, thought other wise, going after her. Human net caught her, was Cash a friend, the dog had saved her before. The trauma she had to deal with radiated from her, leary to trust, without a name, or from where. Cash is on his way to his family compound, and sister in law was a Dr. A chemistry between them, she feel safe, yet, to go on, with no name, or where they were going. Did she have a choice, she knew someone was after her. The inappropriate dress, and all the stratches, were they just from running, or something more. A tense plot from the beginning, as you feel what this woman is going through. While Cash Lucianos he didn't do commandments, he couldn't leave her she would die. Or worse the compound would find her, or maybe both of them. Each one of these stories in the Scorch Series are worth reading, a good, tense plot, that leaves you wondering if they will survive.Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion. I absolutely love this entire series! Each Luciano family member has shown great leadership, loving and compassionate souls and are true romantic Italians. Cash is the firefighter from Colorado, never staying anywhere too long or in any relationship. He has a secret that only he knows and it's changed his way of life, until Sunshine allowed him to open up. Sunshine was disoriented with amnesia after an traumatic incident with skinheads, and Cash's dog, Tiny, lead them to her. Their travels through the woods to Idaho were exciting, scary and inspiring. Having dogs involved in the story gives us another sense of compassion during this frightening time of the Scorch Flu. Although the women the boys have become attached to are intelligent and unique in their own way it was nice to have someone with a more everyday sort of persona. Sunshine's not a doctor, or a badass military vet, or even someone famous, she's a plain jane with a leader's heart. I probably say this for every book but I love this couple. My copy was given by the authors and my review was written voluntarily, I highly recommend reading the books in order.

Whenever I finish a book from this series I sit back close my eyes and sigh deeply that is how utterly moving this series of books are.

How could I not LOVE Cash and Jolene although I do prefer Cash's nickname for her 'Sunshine' they really are a special couple because they were unexpected to me as a reader and to each other but there is no denying they were definitely meant to be, that's for sure.

You have two unassuming characters who believe they are nothing extraordinary, they live with past's they would sooner forget, they find each other which in itself is extraordinary when such a horrific and terrifying pandemic is killing off everyone around them they somehow find each other, save each other, they both rise from the ashes of their former selves to become something more, something awesome and that is just awesome.

Toby and Emily have added another thrilling, magical read to their amazing Scorched series. Flame Road brings us another step closer to the end but how that end will turn out we have to wait to find out but oh it's exciting to read each and every story building up to that end.

INTENSE!!

Flame Road (Book #5 in A Scorch Road Series) is intense! This story is based on brother Cosimo “Cash” Luciano, a firefighter and avid outdoorsman who can never settle down in one place. His constant companion is a beautiful Akita named Tiny. He and his dog are an excellent hunting team. They stumble upon a wounded woman who is suffering from amnesia and Cash starts referring to her as "Sunshine." Together they begin the trek to the Haven but they have unbelievable obstacles in their way! They must fight some of the most evil people in the Scorch Flu War to date. There is love, war, hate, forgiveness, friendships, enemies and a strong sense of family and survival. You will be exhausted after this journey!

I am sorry to say this is not my favorite book so far.

The initial story line...woman lost in woods, being pursued, saved by another man etc was very similar to another book I read in the past and it took me a while to get into this book unlike the others in this series.

What I did like about Cash & Jolene is that they are not "super" smart like some of their other relatives in this series...more "normal" like the rest of us and yet they are definitely smart enough to figure out how to survive!

I think if I read this book before I read Burnt Road with Dante & Melody I might have found it more enjoyable...

It took a second read-through for me to really get into this story. I found myself appreciating the beautiful writing:”Dawn bled up from the horizon like a Polaroid slowly developing into the fullness of light and color as Cash followed Tiny through the black trees.” , as well as really learning more about amnesia. Again, Neal and Kimelman have created a plausible story that COULD be true, a story about human flaws and the love that can overcome them. “He was becoming the man he was meant to be. Sunshine had freed him. He was better, bigger, and braver, all because of her.” Not my favorite of the Scorch Series, but, nevertheless, a worthwhile read.

This story of the fifth Luciano brother, Cozimo,"Cash" Luciano brings us to the wilderness of Colorado.

Cash and is faithful dog Tiny stumble upon a woman in a torn white dress at a stream. She is alone, frightened and doesn't know who she is, how or why she is there, only that her head hurts.

Dubbed "Sunshine" by Cash, he reluctantly agrees to protect and help her and tells Sunshine of the family compound, Haven in Idaho.

Cash is the "ordinary" brother, the Blond sheep of the family with a secret that has kept him from being close to his family.

"Sunshine" Jolene has a brother that is part of the group that released the Scorch flu on the country. He is forcing his sister to marry one of the group members in order to preserve the "pureblood".

While Cash is drawn to Sunshine and Sunshine also has feelings for Cash, neither is rushing to commit.

The first four books each make it to Haven and the reader is happy for the Luciano travelers outcome, but this book leaves with an ominous knuckle bitter ending making this reader anxious and fearful for what comes next!!

Hurry Toby & Emily!!!

I can't believe that we are getting close to the end. These are books and a series that you never want to see end. You become attached to the characters that are amazingly brought to life by two amazing authors. With a story that will keep you turning the pages as fast as your e-reader will let you. This installment was awesome. I love Jolene's strength and courage. Cash is strong and self aware of the past that has created him. The two of them together melt the pages. This is one great read that has followed 4 other great reads that you won't want to miss out on.

I have loved all the Scorch Series books so far! I can only give this one 4 stars, because it was predictable. I was able to figure out where the book was going in the first few chapters. Cash and Jolene love story is nice and there are some wonderful moments that tug at your heart in good and bad ways. The story is still very enjoyable and hope people will still read it. I am stilling looking forward and excited to read the next book.

The 5th in this series and we meet Cash, another Luciano brother. And he is troubled with a secret from his childhood. Cash finds a woman on the way to his families safe Haven who has been obviously mistreated and has amnesia. The two find their way through dangerous life threatening situations but find each other along the way. And ties back into the start of the Scorch Flu. A little too much sex for me. But I enjoyed this read. Especially Tiny. I am an ARC reader.

After the amazing emotional roller coaster ride of Burnt Road, this book has a slower (in a good way) and sweeter tone. Don't get me wrong there is plenty of action with another skin head uprising; kidnappings, their own demons...Cash (Cosimo), Sunshine (Jolene) and Tiny have to come together to fight violence as contagious as the Scorch Flu. in doing so, they generate plenty of heat and healing. Another good read. Sparked with action

I love Flame Road and Cash and Jolene. To me, their story is the best out of the series......no wait did I say theirs was? I meant to say it was.....oh gee. Cash and Jolene are down to earth everyday people. Just like you and I. It takes Cash a little while to know that he loves her, but when he realizes it he falls for her really hard. Jolene knew right from the start. Their's is magic. Toby and Emily are two hot, hot, hot authors. We love you for giving us the Luciano family to fall in love with. We're gonna miss them when they're gone.

Another adventure about the Luciano family. Now we have met the family I enjoyed this. Still prefer thrillers but am getting more drawn into this series.

As with Scorch Road, well written with strong characters. Maybe I will continue reading more in this series after all.

Thrilling book #5 in this series. Another brother' s emotional, driving, and sexy story. This one is very different then the previous ones and I didn't like the violence in it, but it was necessary since we are fighting evil people.

This Cash's story. He meets Sunshine in the woods while he is trying to go the Haven where the rest of his family is safe from the Scorch Flu. This is a love story and a story about troubled time. There is a lot to deal with. Will Sunshine remember who she really is? Will they get to the Haven safely? Read this adventure to find out. I did, and can't wait for the next book to tie up loose ends. I love all the brothers, their sister and mother, and all the love stories. Each book is a complete story you can't miss. Sexy + charming men.

The Scorch Series keeps you coming back for more!

Cash & Sunshine's story is like fire and ice! And I love Tiny, the bear like dog that's actually an Akita. Cash is a stubborn Lucanio brother, that never stays in one place for to long. And Sunshine has a dark past she's keeps trying to run from. Their story is of learning to trust, letting go, moving forward and holding onto love. All while trying to get too the Haven! And out running the scorch flu and crazy skinheads! This journey had me yelling at my kindle and biting my lip!

Let me start off that I love this series! I have thoroughly and completely enjoyed each book in the story, but Flame Road hit flat for me. It started out terrific with who we later learn is a woman named Jolene, being stranded in the woods with amnesia. Found by Cash Luciano and his dog Tiny she agrees to go along with him in order to survive. Perfect suspense plot.

It was the romantic part of the story that felt weird for me. To me, it felt a little stilted, like they were forcing themselves to love each other. Yet, I'm so glad they did fall in love, because they really are good for each other. Just ordinary people, trying to survive. Maybe a few extra pages developing their love story would have been helpful.

But, the end part? So exciting! I was very surprised that a certain someone is still around (no spoilers here!). I'm looking so forward to finding out the fate of this individual.

It's a definite 3.5 stars for me, and just because I didn't connect as well with this book, it won't stop me from reading the rest of the series, and hope that Toby & Emily continue to work together on future projects.

I am loving this series! This particular story didn't quite reach the level of the previous ones for me. That being said, it is a good book and I loved Cash and Jolene aka "Sunshine". Sunshine is just that, a ray of light the shines brightly on everyone around her even after what she is going through. Cash is another badass Luciano brother who does what it takes to protect those he cares about. The secondary characters added some colorful and funny moments. I did LOVE the ending of the book. ( I'm not going to say what happens, I don't want to spoil it. But if you've been reading the series you will not be disappointed).

I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader copy of this book.

I want to preface this by saying I absolutely loved the previous books in this series, and the series is worth reading 100%.

However, Cash and Jolene fell short of all the previous couples. The book felt rushed, forced, and awkward in parts. It hits all the things that a contemporary romance should, but falls short by far of all the other books in this series, despite a great opening and ending. I hope this is just a hiccup in the series, and the next book will be back at the same great standard of the previous ones. (less)

Flame Road is the fifth in the Scorch Flu series, a pandemic road trip romance, by Toby Neal and Emily Kimelman. In each book a different Luciano brother has been featured, all different in personality and strengths, all captivating and seductive in their own way. Equally appealing are the women each Luciano brother travels with on the road to The Haven, the eldest Luciano brother’s safe compound.
Cosimo ‘Cash’ Luciano considers himself the ‘black sheep’ of the family, always avoiding commitment and living life as free as a rolling stone. Traveling the woods and back roads with his dog ‘Tiny’ on his way to The Haven, Cash is led to a woman lost in the woods by Tiny. Lost, in more ways than one, the woman can’t even remember her name. Cash names her ‘Sunshine’, and invites her to travel to The Haven with him.
Sunshine is filled with fear and insecurity, yet shows bravery when adversity strikes. As the two travel together they are challenged by many circumstances and lawless skinheads that are bent on capturing Sunshine.
For both Cash and Sunshine, each carries with them the echo of pain unfolding from their past lives, buried secrets, guilt and feelings of self-doubt. Their story is one of learning to choose in every moment who you want to be. They’d run through the woods and found redemption through love and acceptance.

What can you say about the #LusciousLucianos other than "where have they been my entire life?!"

Cosimo Luciano is no exception. Like his nickname implies, Cash is pretty "easy come, easy go" and also very hard to get a hold on. Never one to stay around very long, he is always on the go. Only now it's to catch up with his family at his brother JT's secure compound safe and away from the rise of the Scorching the deadly epidemic spreading its way across the country. Sticking to the refuge of the forest seemed like a good way to avoid towns and the many sick and dying people in them. That is until his trusty sidekick Tiny picks up on a scent and just won't let it go and Cash always listens to his dog.

Alone in the woods with no memory of who she is, where she came from, and more importantly who she's running from Jolene finds herself running right into a gorgeous stranger whose dog just saved her life. Her fear subsides as her gut instinct tells her she can trust him and that's not all her body tells her either.

Cash was raised to never turn his back on anyone in need and he's determined to help her find somewhere safe from whoever is after her and there's nowhere better than The Haven. Jolene is at odds when asked if she'd like to travel with him because she can't bring herself to put him in danger even if she's not sure what all that means. But she knows in her heart that Cash will protect her and she is safe with him. That's more than she's ever felt in her life even if she doesn't remember it.

Their journey is action packed, fast paced, and keeps you on the edge of your seat with a touch of romance and humor to take the edge off the impending apocalyptic doom.

I have enjoyed each one of the books in this series as they show the different characters in the Luciano family and their different strengths in the crisis they are faced with. However although Cash and Jolene (AKA Sunshine) are believable and drawn sympathetically, there is a tension missing from this book which is present in the rest I have read.
Cash and his dog Tiny discover a young woman in the forest who initially does not know who she is and why she is dressed so strangely. Together they make their way to a village where survivors are trying to make a life for themselves. The villagers welcome Cash and Sunshine as they journey towards The Haven, but Sunshine's past catches up with her again.
Although the least favourite that I have read so far, I have to say that the authors have a huge success on their hands with this series.

Once again Toby and Emily produce a great read.

This book seems to start slow. I love to read and rarely put a book down once it is begun. For at least the first third of this book, it was easy for me to put it down and pick it up a couple of hours later. After that slow start, I got into the groove and read continuously!

As with all the Scorch Series books, this has a Luciano family member (Cosimo/Cash) involved in moving across country to the family’s Haven in Idaho to stay safe during the Scorch Flu. And, once again, our guy finds his girl. The book is exciting … violent … sexy … fun!

I liked Flame Road but it was probably my least favorite in the series so far. Somehow there just wasn't enough tension and I liked but didn't love Cash and Sunshine. I feel a bit let down and I'm not really sure why. This is still a really good book and I would happily buy it. I felt that Toby and Emily lost a little bit of their mojo here.

I received a free copy of this book in return for an honest review.

I love how this story begins. I was hooked on the first paragraph! I love how Cash came up with Jolene's name. To be honest I prefer her nickname too! I love how every book that follows the Luciano men vary. They are so different from one another as they should be but they connect with one another in one way or another. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. So say I neglected my chores to read this book is true. Bring on the next one!!

No Spoilers. I must say, I am a pacifist and got so caught up in the story, I started obsessing about this tough, vulnerable, hunted couple not having a gun. This fast paced book does what these authors do best: excellent dialogue, beautiful writing and a complex story. Sometimes it's fun to just jump into the action without a lot of back story. I'm glad to see the series advancing and I'm looking forward to reading the next addition.
