I’ve never read a ‘superhero’ romance novel before, so I can say that Marina Simcoe has popped my superhero cherry. *Snicker* Anyway…onto the review!

I know I mentioned superhero, but this book isn’t quite like the usual ‘superman saves the day’ kind of thing. Rather than reveal himself to the public, Marcus hides in plain sight, performing tricks and magic on the streets or on stage. No one knows his secret…except for Angela. This woman became obsessed with the man known as Marcus the Magnificent. Why? Because despite his fame and fortune, he is a man without vitality, without joy. While everyone is drawn to his spectacular tricks, Angela is drawn to the man.

I absolutely love, love, LOVE the scene when he finally finds her again:

“Found her,” I heard Marcus say quietly, and a spotlight hit my face immediately, making me squint. I heard loud cheers and applause again and then, suddenly, I felt… weightless.
“Don’t be afraid,” his voice whispered straight into my ear.

The majority of this book is told in first person through Angela’s eyes, but on occasion, we are treated to Marcus’s point of view written in the third person. I admit I was a little disappointed to not have more of his POV, but that’s just me. I like reading from the male’s perspective. It didn’t take away from the story. We see his growth going from bored playboy to someone who is desperately looking for someone (Angela) who he can connect with. His straightforwardness (ahem, a little creepy in the beginning) stems from his awkwardness when it comes to relationships. While he’s been around people all his life, he’s never let anyone close, except his friend Simon, and even he doesn’t know everything there is to know about Marcus. His affection and thoughtfulness towards Angela is sweet. He craves her time, her touch…craves all of her. But he can’t allow himself to lose control…

Angela has hurdles of her own to overcome. She’s always seen herself as the responsible and practical one. Her brother could never hold a job, had grown addicted to drugs before joining rehab, but there is now hope as he lands himself a job and a woman who encourages him to do better. Angela’s parents have also dug themselves into a hole finically, and Angela had taken it upon herself to help them by getting a second job. This gives her no free time to enjoy life and despite all the hours she works, she has no money of her own, and a mother who refuses to give up a horrible shopping habit. Whatever time she can (which isn’t much as he has his own schedule to keep) she spends with Marcus, discovering more and more about him and his past. But there is still a void between them and a secret he has yet to reveal.

There are a few instances that I questioned her judgment and actions, some of them I understood, while others just didn’t make sense to me —especially the villain (Which is why I'm giving this a 4.5 Star rounded up to 5). But in the end, Marcus saves the day!

The Real Thing is only Marina Simcoe’s second book and I have to say that she has already grown so much as a writer. Her voice is quirky and fun with a hint of dark. I loved the time Marcus and Angela spent together and the magic involved. Marcus’s personality is exceedingly charming and I found myself grinning while reading. Can’t wait to see what Marina has in store for us next!!

I have been stalking Ms. Simcoe for a while now (mostly through her FB page) waiting for the release of her new book “The Real Thing.” It has been a rough week, but I was able to find enough time to read the book I was so impatiently waiting for, and …I absolutely love Marcus and Angela story.

The second book for this author and I already see a bright future. The story starts slow, giving us a background of Angela’s live and obsession with Marcus before they officially meet, this is not an instant love kind of book, on the contrary, our H/h take time to fall in love and work out their problems like any other couple. I really enjoy how she weaves her first book with this.
My only regret, I would have loved to read more about this upcoming meeting with others like Marcus.

Overall, it is five stars from me.
Bring the next one, please.

Ms. Marina Simcoe blew my mind away with her last book "Demon Mine".
It was reccommended by one of my favorite author on FB, so I purchased it without having any expectations.
Then I really got hooked!!
Couldn't stop turning pages and stayed up late just reading through till I finish.

I think Ms. Simcoe is amazing at storytelling urban fantasy fairy tales for adults.
Yes! 4 adults 4 sho!! W/ incubus as H and sexual orgasm with earth quakes!

"The Real Thing" was an amazing story!
Less intense than her last book, but still I got addicted to this fantasy world.
Couldn't come back to the reality for a while.

Although, the heroes of her books are both amazing (They are too perfect for my taste, hoping they would show more possessive/jealous nature tho:P),
You know what I reallty liked about her books?
STRONG HEROINES!
Not physically, but mentally tough heroines.
Angela, h of this book had so much everyday issues such as financial problems, family drama and relationship struggles. Similar to any one of us could relate.
However, what I liked about was, she did not rely on her superhuman/super-rich boyfriend. I really liked how she tried to solve and overcome all of them on her own.
I really hope Ms. Simcoe keeps on writing my kinda heroines!

I will definitely buy any books Ms.Simcoe will releases next.
HOWEVER, I am desperately hoping to see more fellow incubus yummy sexy gentlemen (I met at Demon Mine) in the (near) future:)

The author did an amazing job with the main characters. Marcus the Magnificent is a magician who seems to perform magical things others cannot do. And yet despite having so many loving fans, he is lonely. Angela, however, seems to see the real person under the mask and the two need each other. Their relationship was invaluable to both of them in overcoming issues of love and trust. I found myself squirming sometimes, but overall the story was a good one, a very different one from any others I have read. I think you will either love it or hate it, but you won’t put it down without having a profound reaction to it. And I think it was well worth reading!

I'd like to give this book a higher rating, except that is was so underwhelming. So boring. So...Meh.

The concept has so much potential. But the execution was just so-so. The MCs never really became real for me. The romance felt shallow. The magic never came alive. Even the bad guy was dealt with in 3 sentences and never thought of again. It was all just so superficial when it could have been epic.

The idea behind this story was unique and fascinating. A person with real magic posing as a magician, hiding in plain sight. I’ve only read one other book about a magician prior to this and I really wish there were more.
Marcus was the male lead. He was a difficult character to place in a box. My impressions of him were multiple. He seemed bored with life, it’s actually mentioned multiple times. He was cocky when it came to women. He was arrogant. Once Angela came into the picture he changed though. He became unsure and hesitant. Obviously he didn’t want to take the chance of hurting her with his vast powers but he also reminded me of the unpopular teenager that had the attention of a popular girl and was afraid he’d lose her.
Angela was obsessed with Marcus at the beginning of the story. She saw him once at a New Year’s Eve performance in NYC and that sparked a change in her. She became obsessive about stalking his pictures and news articles. They had a very brief meeting when Angela managed to watch an impromptu street performance. It was months later before Marcus finally decided to try to locate the woman in red. After Marcus and Angela started seeing each other Angela was hesitant to form a relationship thinking he would get bored and move on. Marcus felt like she was the only one in the world he didn’t have to pretend with.
For me, most of the story flowed well and kept me engrossed. Sometimes it dragged just a little. The writing was good and I found very few mistakes.
Now, what I didn’t like?
There was a descriptive sex scene with another woman in the opening pages. I believe it sets up Marcus’s personality and reason for his actions, however, it also leaves the reader with many questions. My top question for the author? Why write Marcus as a man whore at all??? He can’t finish with a woman and it would just be irritating and painful being intimate and then getting zero out of it. I just couldn’t wrap my head around this plot line.
The need for using powers to prevent catastrophic build up was interesting but the use of sexual release was strange and felt manufactured.
The conversations between Marcus and Angela were annoying to read at times because of the use of flowy, romantic endearments.
The bad guy was defeated rather easily and after the build up was a sudden let down.
There was no or super brief closer to questions with just a few words - his origins was my biggest question.
Overall, I did enjoy the story and would recommend. I just wish some parts were written slightly different to make the story even more enjoyable

Angela is a provider, a care taker and a problem solver... working herself to her limits with two jobs to support herself but also her retired parents. If there is a problem that needs fixing...she’s your girl....until she sees Marcus the magnificent on New Year’s Eve.... and her whole world is turned upside down by the mysterious, handsome but bored up and coming magician/illusionist.

Marcus is magnificent, Marcus is bored and isolated by his ‘talent’ Marcus is alone even when he is surrounded by a hundred screaming fans... Marcus is more! But that more comes with a price tag. To keep his powers in check Marcus is compelled to do spontaneous shows and spend time with countless women.. never reaching his own happiness for fear of the consequences of his power unleashing...... that is until whilst performing a street stunt... a woman calls him out and sees him for what he truly is....and her touch reveals a calming balm for his magic.

I’ve delayed reading this book for such a long time, not because I thought it wasn’t going to be any good... but because I knew it would be great. This wonderful slow burn of a book... both in the development and reveal of the charachters and the budding relationship between Marcus and Angela.

It’s also a story of trust, true painful trust that means ripping physical and mental masks off and revealing the darkness that hides inside each person....allowing the vulnerability and hoping that the person we show that darkness to will be worthy of that trust..... the darkness is the fear that manifests as self doubt, lack of self worth, pride in the things we do that make us feel worthy but take a toll on our bodies and minds.

Once again I’m blow away but such a multi layered wonderful book and this wonderful author.

The Woman in the Red Dress…
Angela McAllister liked to think of herself as a down to earth, pragmatic person; helpful, level headed. A good daughter who worked an extra job to help support her parents and her younger brother. But she was beginning to feel the strain; her life had become a race from one job to the other, then home for a few hours of sleep to start all over again the next day. She needed a break! And oh, what a break she got going to a bachelorette party for her best friend….
Marcus Hargrave was billed as Marcus the Magnificent. He was considered a top-rated illusionist; and so handsome! His unearthly, other-world male beauty captured Angela’s attention like no other man. But he seemed… bored… disillusioned… something… But in Angela’s eyes, he was magical… and so much more….
Once Angela and Marcus connected, her world took on new depths and dimensions; but hidden malevolence and evil is swirling around them both. Will they survive what’s coming?
Wowza, what a story! Riveting! It grabbed my attention from the start, and my imagination was engaged! Twists and turns, and unexpected events kept me glued to my kindle! Highly recommend to anyone that likes romance, suspense, and the paranormal all wrapped into one amazing book

It felt so real!
I enjoyed my first read of Marina Simcoe, The Real Thing, a lot.
I am a big fan of romance. Especially when it is written like this one, with a lot of anticipation between the two main characters Angela and Marcus.
The growing affection and relationship between them touched me right away. Both of them have their very own issues regarding trust, love and just being loved. And sometimes it just felt so relatable.
On top of that if was great to see how Marina managed to include light paranormal elements into the story but still not overwhelming and drowning it. Me personally, I appreciated that a lot, because if I am honest the paranormal genre is normally not my first go to. But this time it was just the right amount to get myself lost in a very swoon-worthy read with just the right touch of magic.
Well done and thanks, Marina, for introducing me to your writing!

Review is for ARC:

What is it about a man in a mask that makes you want to peak under it?

I loved delving into this book. Simcoe has a way of grabbing you by your heartstrings in such a beautiful way. Her characters are so honest, sweet and relatable.

The yearning between Angela and Marcus for each other and Marcus’s simmering sensuality really made for a heady slow burn. I loved every second of it.

5 utterly deserving stars!

All hail Marina

This is the second book I’ve read of this author and I must say the woman knows what she is doing. I liked Marcus, he was fun and straight forward for a character with such a huge secret. But it was the girl in the red dress that stole the show for me. I felt like I could relate to Angela in so many ways. I loved her character and I think it was the fact that she got her HEA that won me over so much.

He is the magician that seems to be able to perform things that no one else can what is his secret Marcus is the magician that other magicians talk about he may be hugely successful but he is also extremely unhappy Then he meets Angela she actually sees the man not the magician. As they develop a friendship that turns to more will she learn his secret. This is a well written story where the characters are the making of the story line It was an absolute pleasure to read

This was one was good, way better than "The Forgotten", the book by Marina Simcoe I read before this one. Its set in the same world as the "Demons" book but demons are only mentioned in "The Real Thing" to explain... the real thing.

I wasn't happy with some lines that are crossed, especially by the hero, but overall I loved the characters and their romance.

I loved this story about Marcus and Angela, so different in a good way of what I usually read. It is very unique and amazing, a magician with real magic and a woman that throw him a curve when they met. The story will hold you on until the end, I suggest you give this story a chance, I am sure you will be surprised as I was, will be looking forward for more books by Marina Simcoe.

Despite my initial reaction to the first chapter, this book eventually kept my attention and made it difficult to put down until finished. It was interesting to see how these two individuals could be such a good match for each other. While Marcus and Angela may both be strong people in their own ways, they found a way to hold them up when they let their weaknesses show. Maybe, one day, Ms. Simcoe will write a sequel that starts a few years after this one. What will happen to them and their families then?

"With you, I truly am fearless. With you, I'm not even afraid to be weak."

5 Amazing, Blazing ⭐

This was a truly unique and epic love story. I was enthralled from the first page and adored the entire journey.
Marcus and Angela defined soulmates. Their chemistry was off-the-charts, and their love was awe-inspiring. Everything felt so real, which is amazing, especially in a story that has paranormal elements.

The plot, writing, and character development was nearly perfect. I will definitely be picking up more books by this author.

Another great story by Marina Simcoe

Just love her style of writing. She always manages to highlight and show through her writing that the most important thing in life is love. The love of friends, family, and a life mate. The only way Love can conquer all is together with your loved ones, facing your fears head on, and not ignoring or taking things for granted.

Quite an original paranormal romance, but what else would I have expected from Marina?

This was an exceptional read. Up until now, I've been wondering if I've read all there was regarding paranormal romance. (And I've read a ton!) Then Marina pens this novel.

What is the difference between magic and magick? One's associated with illusions, smokes and mirrors, and sleight of hand. The other utilizes science and technology we have yet to understand or control. And somehow, Marcus the Magnificent, a rising star from an unknown background, surprises everyone in the illusionists' circle with his amazing tricks yet...

Yet something just wasn't quite explaining how Marcus was doing it, Angela, a Toronto resident, was finally figuring it all out. But there was something about him, about his magick, that turned her into a woman obsessed. She can't go about her day without knowing what was going on in his. She's googled everything she could possibly find on the mysterious man, as she struggles to understand the man behind the ever-present mask. And it takes all she has within her not to go completely fan-stalker-psycho because she just can't afford to throw away her innate feelings for this man.

Sometimes you can't have a PNR without some kind of conflict. I really hate to say that this was the only gimmick I could have done without. I mean, Marina’s written some very good day-in-the-life stuff, but I will say that I appreciate the fact that she kept to the rules of her universe. She definitely had done some adequate research regarding the science of magick in that there must be a balance set in the universe for all actions taken. Even Einstein hypothesized this with his theories that was truly about dark matter and dark energy, something Einstein himself could not believe in. We're talking the Law of Sympathy, the Law of Equivalent Exchange, the Law of Reciprocity, the Law of Distortion, and, of course, the Law of Balance. I was very pleased to see these in action correctly.

I found her characters quite believable and very sympathetic. I also appreciate the fact that Simon was not delegated into the oft-used template of the manager who only wants the best for his rising star, and no bimbo will get in the way of that, dammit! (The Yoko Ono Effect.) He was a realistic individual who did not see the "bimbo" or gold digger in Angela, only someone who could actually make Marcus happy. I applaud how she dealt with the topic of addiction. Addiction isn't just cigarettes, alcohol, and illicit drugs, yet it can destroy families nonetheless.

I think what I liked the most was that Marcus didn't end up being a cliche. He could had been the über-jaded, rich, success story like so many billionaire storylines out there. (Remember when they were just millionaires? I guess that's inflation for you.) Nor was he a bad-ass biker type with a hidden heart of gold. He was a frightened, over-cautious young man who had to hide his fears and innocence behind a mask because of his tragic past. I cringed when he attempted his first conversational "date" with Angela, having no clue how to even talk to a real, live woman. (I've been on the receiving end of that encounter more times than I would care to think... and I even married the guy!) It's about time the nerdy guy was celebrated. We need more geeky men who appreciate women no matter how they come because we are who we are. Not disposable!

And finally, I was most pleased that Author Marina Simcoe, unlike other writers, does know her girlie parts and how they actually function, her knowledge not being based on supposition and downright fantasy. (No Hoover Effect, right?? Hee hee!)

I highly recommend this read. It isn't brain candy. It's finally celebrating a quiet sort of romantic hero without the usual cliches. But the undercurrent of genuine emotions without the excessive torment and angst. You can't help but to love these two and cheer for a happy ending in their future.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving my honest-to-the-bone review like always.

Well we were not off to a good start.

Literally the very beginning of the book is Marcus being orally serviced by a Rando. Marcus is a pig. Marcus is a womanizer. Marcus is a shallow piece of crap. But he’s “Marcus the Magnificent” he’s “magicallll” so it’s all good, right?
Wrong.

Nothing says book boyfriend like indiscriminately treating women like objects. Oh, except for the herione. She’s *s p e c i a l*. 🙄

I really should’ve given up there. I really should’ve.

But I barreled on, hoping our dear Heroine would make up for the where the H lacked.

Big nope.

She’s a star struck obsessed fan who had, “But MoooOoom, I can FIX him!” syndrome. She’s just a bored, lonely, horny woman who is so unfilled in her own life that she has to fill that void with an obsession over someone else. The common, but toxic savior complex.

Everything about this, “romance” is toxic. The creep broke into her apartment while she was sleeping (nude!). He’s briefly considered using her touch to keep the fire away. No one is open and honest, they’re hiding things from each other out a fear. Just completely unhealthy. Not to mention the actual power imbalance. If he decided to go all ‘Homelander’ from the boys on her, there is literally nothing she can do about it. In the words of Michael Scott, “Nope, I don’t like that.”

“‘Now we know we have another thing in common—both of us are twisted and perverted stalkers,’ he proclaimed brightly.“

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

Hard, hard pass.

Angela is fascinated by Marcus and not just with his fantastic illusions - it's the emptiness in his eyes that calls to her. Being the curious girl she is and having the need to 'fix' what she can, she finds herself becoming somewhat obsessed with the mystery that is Marcus.
After an impromptu street performance, Marcus is approached by a woman who claims to know the truth - His first instinct is defensive. What does she want from him? When she flees after leaving him speechless. He finds he needs to know more about her. Curious still he seeks out that which calls to him.
This was such a unique idea for a story. I was quite intrigued when I came across the blurb. It was a sweet and entertaining slow to build romance. The two main characters are easy to connect with, both are pretty down to earth and quite likable. The story itself is a bit slow at times but for the most part, keeps a steady pace and is an entertaining read. IMO it lacked strong conflict or angst within the story. There were a couple of small problems easily dealt with nothing that really got my emotions engaged. It was more a look at two lives who were so vastly different yet both so alike. Despite Marcus' popularity, he was still so alone. Angela had also found a way to close off any real bonds also.
I enjoyed watching them grow together. Marcus really is the sweetest H.
