Told in alternating timelines, Moonlight Drive is a captivating novel about the rocky beginnings of a girl on her way to music stardom and the wild 1980s all-male rock group she follows — through struggles and addiction and love. An epic tale showcasing ways in which the human spirit triumphs and how dreams never truly die!
“I hadn’t read more than a few pages and was hooked, like a junkie craving her next fix. Moonlight Drive is a heartbreaking story of first loves, making it in the music industry, the lure of addiction, betrayal, pain, jealousy, groupies, following your dreams, and so much more.
Get ready, readers, for Moonlight Drive is your next addiction.” – N.N. Heaven
The magazines didn’t do him justice.
Not long after running away from home, Daniela Isabella joins Moonlight Drive’s 1985 Live and Wired tour, hoping her long-lost friend, Nick, will remember her.
He’s finally made it — just like he promised. He’s the bassist for one of the biggest rock bands in the world.
Only, he’s reinvented himself and doesn’t recognize his childhood sweetheart. Nicki Quick has been seduced by the decadent lifestyle of the music scene of the eighties, lost in a haze of sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll. And to Nicki, Dani is just another chick in a long line of groupies.
He soon finds she isn’t like the other girls, though. Music runs through her veins — it’s part of her soul. She’s a songwriter. A dreamer. A girl determined to make it in a boys’ world.
This is the story of two musicians. A boy and a girl. A man and a woman. Two people who learn that being lost is sometimes the same as being found.
Author Note: Moonlight Drive is a 57,000-word novel. More literary fiction, less romance. The characters and their intense and realistic actions drive the plot. Contains content that may trigger some readers.
A.R. Hadley writes imperfectly perfect sentences by the light of her iPhone. She loves the ocean. Chocolate. Her children. And Cary Grant. She annoys those darling little children by quoting lines from Back to the Future, but despite her knowledge of eighties and nineties pop culture, she was actually meant to live alongside the Lost Generation after the Great War and write a mediocre novel while drinking absinthe with Hemingway. Instead, find her sipping unsweet tea near a beautiful garden as she weaves fictional tales of love and connection amid reality.
5 glorious stars!!! This book was amazing. It’s so well written. Has amazing characters who’s story spans decades. There’s ups and downs and heart breaking moments a plenty. My poor heart took a massive beating.
I almost read this in one sitting. I had every intention to just read a couple chapters. And what felt like I’d only blinked and I was half way through and a sobbing mess. I had to take a break. Thats the only reason why I didn’t finish this title in one sitting. I needed a break to catch my breath, build my heart back up and ready to be battered again.
Moonlight Drive hit so close to home for me. There were so many memories that were coming to the forefront of my mind. From a time during my life that I’ll always hold close to my heart.
The writing and words just flow off the page. I couldn’t get enough. It’s so true to life in so many ways.
If you like standalone titles that’ll have you emotionally wrecked over and over again, you’ve found it here. If you like character driven books, it’s this one. And if you like a contemporary title set within the music world of the 80’s and 90’s, the young should without a double pick this one up. Even if you don’t tend to like any of those things, this is one book you don’t want to miss.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
NOTE: a huge thank you goes out to the author who provided an eARC copy of this title for an honest review.
Moonlight Drive relies upon a seemingly implausible premise: Nick, a rock star, doesn’t recognize the person who provided the pivotal, years-long emotional connection in their early teens. The new band “groupie” was really Nick's dearest friend in his (recent) teens. She once went by the name Dani and now goes by Daniela--another reason it doesn't feel like it would be an enormous stretch for Nick to make the jump to identifying her. Daniela soon lives on the bus, is invited to share rooms with the band, and tantalizes the star--all without being recognized by the soulmate of her youth.
Nick engages in outrageously destructive, hurtful behaviors. Exploring this brokenness could have been intriguing, but I found his character frustrating and off-putting. He absurdly feels he deserves congratulations for the small measures that he considers restraint (in one example that felt staggering, he receives oral sex from a stranger with his soulmate sitting next to him rather than having sex with the woman, and he seems to feel this is a sacrifice).
The relationship at the heart of Moonlight Drive just didn't hold up for me. There were some steamy moments, but the sexiness often felt violent, the racy talk didn’t land for me and at times felt jarring and aggressive, and most importantly, to me, the characters' emotional connection didn’t feel real. A minor note: the first line of the book seemed meant to shock but was so abrupt that it felt too pushed and forced, and I started off irritated with the situation I'd been thrust into with Dani from the get-go.
A style note: there are many instances of interrupted speech--so much so that sometimes I wasn’t even sure what the characters were getting at--and frequent instances of what felt like unrealistically intuitive mind-reading as characters pieced together what they imagined the other to be trying to express. This felt unnecessarily confusing.
I was puzzled as to why the "secret" that Nick, a professional musician, played piano and wrote songs would be considered too sensitive or personal to be made known. This felt forced and a little silly. I also wasn't clear as to how his broken, consistently self-destructive drug- and alcohol-fueled implosions allowed him to feel irresistible, even to the most grounded characters. Even solid mentor Jim inexplicably says to Dani about Nick's appeal, "Keep spending time with him, on him, you're gonna fall in love."
The specter of Nick's addiction overshadows much of the story, and this element felt tragic and compelling. Hadley's descriptions of the clothing styles of the musicians of the era were entertaining and a highlight. But much of this felt too convenient and unrealistic for me, and reactions frequently didn’t seem to follow from events.
I received a prepublication digital edition of this book through NetGalley and Chameleon Media Productions.

This book is just not it. At times it’s way too disjointed to follow. Just scene after scene flashing forward and flashing backward with little to no cohesiveness between timelines. The 3rd person POV is sometimes so poorly done that its awkwardness makes it unreadable. There is no poetry to her prose. Whoever said that is most definitely smoking crack. And we all know crack is wack.
It’s like she read Daisy Jones and thought I can do that.
No, girl, you can’t and you didn’t.
These two deserve each other. The h never made any effort to fight for the H and the H just never made any effort…and I’m left feeling like it’s because the h gave him no real room to do so, just like she blames her OM husband for their relationship failure while not giving him a level playing field.
In the end, tho, I think the h is the one that fucked this shit up the most. Her ego is quietly a character labeled “not in the boys club.” She treats everyone around her as disposable, yet has a level of unaware self righteousness that grates as I’m supposed to be in awe of this girl rising from her victimhood to a strong independent woman. Her lack of accountability for her own actions, even in the moments she has twinges of awareness, is doubly hypocritical as she blames everyone else for the state of affairs in which they find themselves.
I feel like the mean girl here calling this shit out. But I don’t care. If we’re gonna bitch about douche baggery in our H’s…the same must be done for the h’s.
DNF at 84% when I realized absolutely all of the growth these characters supposedly had was off page or unexplained or, dare I say, all in the author’s head.
Moonlight drive is a women's fiction that tells the story of Nick & Dani in various timelines. The story shows the real and dramatic side of the life of rock stars and groupies on the road. The author was inspired by “the heroin diaries" by Nikki Sixx, which has heavy drugs and alcohol thematic, showcasing the challenges of addiction and fame. A. R. Hadley does a great job in portraying these struggles in a very raw and intense manner.
Nick & Dani were young lovers who know each other since childhood. Their lives get separated for some years as Nick follows his music carrer to became part of a band. Dani decides to follow his band tour on the road, where she disguises herself as groupie. Nick however is deep into the rockstar life; with excessive alcohol, drugs and sex. With so much on his mind he doesn't even remember her. As he keeps relapsing on drugs, sex and alcohol, she decides to pursuit her dream; studying, writing and learning how to play music.
This is an inspiring story about how love can be the path to healing from addiction. To keep pursuing your dreams and not give up. The drugs and alcohol kept them apart, but perhaps love and music could bring them back together again. The author makes a comment that stuck to me:
“Addition comes in many forms, and loneliness is universal."
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy for review!
As soon as I started reading Moonlight Drive, I knew I wasn't going to stop. I read it whole in one sitting and enjoyed every part of it.
The story was heartbreaking. Absolutely soul crushing. A story of two lost souls, bound together through time. With a plot alternating between present and past, I was drawn into the decadent life of a rock'n'roll God. There was no turning back. Dani and Nick managed to break my heart alongside theirs. Then they mended it. And broke it again. A vicious circle. Their love was pure. Raw. Like nothing I ever read before.
This book is without a doubt my favourite rock'n'roll story! I fully recommend it!
They book is a horrible depiction of a relationship. The MMC doesn't recognize a person who was integral in their childhood and teen years. When they meet again he knows she's really into him and continues to sleep with other women and use drugs. Even when he calls her his girl and lays a claim. When he finally remembers who she is, does he reform himself and get clean? No. And he still want her to carry the burden. He eventually gets her to visit one of his shows and he takes her and a group of other women in limo. He tries to be intimate with her but she declines. He then asks one of the other women to service him. And forces her to watch. He does all these horrible things and expects her to choose him. The writing is strange as well. Whenever he does something awful it cuts to the next scene, it doesn't show the fmc reaction or feelings. She doesn't one bad thing near the end and alot of her closes relationships scolds her and says she never really gave him a chance. ARE YOU SERIOUS? She asked for monogamy, he said no. She asked him to stop doing drugs it's a no. She did the right thing trying to protect her baby.
In a real story about Rock n’ Roll in the eighties, that is hard to put down. An emotional rollercoaster of a read, hitting on love, hate, and frustration with the characters. At times, a heartbreaking life, Nick and Dani's life, who meet as young teens and get separated not much longer, but they make promises. The rockstar lifestyle that Nicki chooses to live is a mistress he does not want to give up. Dani deserves better and walks away. A cycle they can not seem to break until Dani decides it is her turn to shine. The story covers over twenty years, with some unexpected turns.
In a must-read story of love and forgiveness, the kind of love that lives in your heart and never lets go. Do not expect a typical rock and roll love story.
Thank you to Booksprout and the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.
I recevied a ARC copy of Moonlight Drive and this is my honest review.
When I first startubf reading Moonlight Drive, not going to lie i kept geting confused because of the time jumps. But trust me and stay with it you won’t be sorry
@arhadleywriter is a new to me author. I felt so much of the characters. I wanted to legit scream at Dani and Nicki so many times.
my heart hurt during a lot of this book. the HEA was perfect for Dani and Nicki.
Reading Nicki’s addiction throughout was a heartbreaking thing.
Nick and Dani’s story is one of love, hate, trials, and joy in the little things. I could not stop reading once I picked the book up and the only thing that got in the way was work. *shakes fist at boss* forgive them as they knew not what they were interrupting.
This story will beat your heart up in the best of ways. If you’ve ever read any of Hadley’s books before you know what kind of emotional roller coaster to expect. This is right up there with Bodhi for me and that is singing high praise.
Moonlight Drive is took me on one crazy ride. The story started out as childhood friends, to forgotten loves. It's the life of a rockstar, with sex, drugs, groupies, and rock, and roll. I was drawn in from the start, the twists, and turns kept me reading till the end. Some is not easy to read, it's heartbreaking in fact. This is the first book I've read from A.R. Hadley, and I liked her story, and characters. I'm glad I found a new author to read.
Moonlight Drive is a heartbreaking tale of two intertwining broken souls. Nicki and Dani’s story will tear you in two.
They loved each other when they were children, then Nick promised Dani he would come back for her after he became a big rockstar. But it never happened…. Now years later she joins his tour, only to find out he doesn’t know who she is.
If you love everything Rock n Roll, then you’ll love Moonlight Drive by AR Hadley.
This is the book you have been waiting for! It is a second chance, friends to lovers romance. Dani and Nicki's journey is not a simple one, this is not a light hearted book. IT is real and raw and will make you laugh, cry and piss you off all within a few chapters of each other. It makes you root for their happily ever after while wondering if they will be able to hold on to each to work out everything. THey are two broken souls that will help mend each other but in the end a hea does prevail. But the journey that is the best part! Its alot of fun, sex and rock and roll!
A story of 2 broken kids who have always loved each other. Sometimes the wrong way, sometimes the wrong time, sometimes with the wrong people. A story of finding your person and always chasing them. I find the lesson is that there is one person for all of us. One perfect match to our souls. Don’t let anything keep you from them.
I'm a big Motley Crue fan. I love Nikki Sixx. So when I seen A.R. Hadley on Tiktok talking about this book. How she loved Motley Crue and Nikki Sixx. This book was loosely based on him and the band. I had to read it. It was worth it. I loved the book and loved Nicki Quick.
I was a little excited when I received an advanced copy of Moonlight Drive… ok so I was A LOT excited ………ok ok OK !!! So I may have screamed like a total girl & jumped up & down whilst clapping my hands ……so sue me LOL
Its been a while for me between Rock Star books & Rock Star books are my crack !!! I for one was very desperate for a good fix ….OOOOHHHH BOY! DID I GET MY FIX !!!!
I loved this book. I loved Nick and Dani ! These two together were amazing. The chemistry between them was so strong and powerful that I felt each moment Hadley wrote. I really enjoyed how they interacted with one another, I got to see a different side of them...and that was pretty cool!
The author amazed me from page one and I couldn't for the life of me put it down. It was freaking perfection and the emotional torment...don't even get me started. That what this is. It was pure angst for the better part of the book, and no matter how heart ripping it was, I ate up every second of it.
This book will make you want to throw your book at the wall, it'll make you laugh out loud, it'll make you swoon and grin for pages on end, it'll make you feel like your heart is ripped out, and you'll love every minute of it!
I could go on and on about Moonlight Drive but I don't want to give much away here, because this is a story that deserves to be read.
I highly recommend this book. Go buy it! I have a feeling you’ll fall in love with these characters as much as I did! ❤
Just felt angry seeing the heroine to love a pathetic excuse of a man who deliberately let ow blow him infront of the heroine because in his twisted way he was "proving a point"...ewww.. 🤢

Nick and Dani were childhood sweethearts, but everything changed when Nick moved away suddenly. Shortly after Dani runs away from home, she joins Moonlight Drive's 1985 tour as a groupie of sorts. She's got music in her soul and with Nick now a mega rockstar bassist with Moonlight Drive, she's in. Only Nick doesn't recognize her… and she can't believe what he's turned into. He's now Nicki Quick and he's out for his next high, whether it's sex, drugs, alcohol, or notoriety. When he discovers who she really is, it's the end of the tour. Over the next decade or so, they dance and weave in and out of each other's lives. Their connection, their love, their music bind them together. Can Nick kick the addictions and be the man Dani needs him to be or will he crash and burn, breaking Dani's heart forever?
Get ready, readers, for Moonlight Drive is your next addiction. I hadn't read more than a few pages and was hooked, like a junkie craving her next fix. Moonlight Drive is a heartbreaking story of first loves, making it in the music industry, the lure of addiction, betrayal, pain, jealousy, groupies, following your dreams, and so much more. A.R. Hadley takes us backstage to see what really happens behind the scenes of a mega rock band. Every detail is intricately described so that the reader really feels like they are experiencing what Dani and Nick are going through. On so many levels, Moonlight Drive is a tragic love story. A.R. Hadley's writing will leave you an emotional wreck. It's brilliant and very addictive to read. If you're a fan of hard rock/metal music, you'll love Moonlight Drive. If you're a fan of 80s music and idolize certain long-haired rock stars, pick up Moonlight Drive. It's certainly one of the best books I've read this year. I can't wait to read more from A.R. Hadley. Highly recommend!
Disclaimer: I received a copy from the author in the hopes I'd review it.
This is a very raw look at the lifestyle of a rock star in the 80s and I couldn’t put it down. This is one of those books that will stay with me for a long time and I will think of it with tears in my eyes ... like I have right now.
Dani and Nick met each other when they were 11 and 13 and deep down they both knew that they were soul mates. When Nick and his mother moved away when he was 15, he promised Dani that he would always find her. But he got caught up in the lifestyle of a rock star that when she entered his life again 6 years later, he was so high that he didn’t even recognize her. But she changed a lot in those years from 13 to 19 and also her hair went from blonde to black. She didn’t tell him who she was.
It broke my heart the pain he caused her by getting high, drunk and being with other women right in front of her, even though he had no clue that it was his Dani. I laughed and cried (mostly cried) with them on this journey that spans their life from teens into their 30s. Rock stars are my favorite genre and this one is at the top of my list! I highly recommend it ... but don’t expect the typical rock star romance.
I received an early copy courtesy of the author in exchange for a honest review,
I was just taken on a wild ride, whew! Dani and Nick meet when they are 11 and 13 years old as neighbors and help each other through troubled family lives by creating a garden between their houses, writing songs, and just being there for one another. When Nick suddenly moves away he promises that he will return to find her. Many years later when Nick - now known as Nicki Quick - makes it big as a rock star and forgets about Dani, she does what she has to to be found - dies her hair and joins the tour as a groupie. But does he recognize her for who she is?
This was a hard book to put down. It was a lot of back and forth between Dani and Nick and they just couldn’t seem to get their acts together. It’s a lot of what you would think with a rock and roll story - sex, drugs, heart break, etc. and is told in a way that brings out all of your emotions, and yes, I got angry, happy, and even cried a little too.
Very well written and it makes you feel as if you are there with them. Definitely read this one! You’ll be glad you did.
The journey of two souls passing each other like ships but connected deeply for all of eternity. Nick and Dani. There is no one without the other.
I felt their energy throughout the book. I felt all of it. The heartbreak. The loss. The love. Everything. The author’s story telling style is magnificent. She makes you feel things deeply. My heart went out to both of them. I could relate to a lot of what Dani went through. I’ve known quite a few “Nicki’s” in my lifetime. This story hit home in a few ways. The story is well written. I found it very hard to put down. I devoured it!
Once I finished the book, I laid on my bed for a long time. My heart felt full. I felt like I had gained something special by reading this book. I am suffering from the most wicked book hangover I’ve ever had but I’d do it all over again. If you’re a fan of the muse the author used and love those one of kind romances, this book is for you. Do yourself a favor and read it today! I give it 5 stars.
Based in 1985, this book brought me back to my childhood. I loved remembering stories about all my favorite big hair rock bands and their extracurricular activities. When Dani has a chance to travel with Moonlight Drive on their tour she doesn't think twice. Wondering if her former best friend, Nicki Quick, will recognize her, she presents herself as a groupie. It's been years since they've seen each other but the wounds are still open. Nick doesn't understand what it is about the new girl but once he figures out who she is all hell breaks loose. The rock style lifestyle of an 80's rock star, the back stage activities, and the references to 1980's made this book extremely real thanks to the author's references (noted at the end of the book). The fighting, banter, and extreme attraction between the characters will keep you wanting more.
This is must read.
I was given an ARC copy of this book and this is my fair and honest
This book has become my new addiction. Thank you for fueling it. ~ 5/5 ~ When I first saw the blurb and read it was a rockstar romance I knew I had to read it. Nikki Quick and Dani’s relationship is just the biggest rollercoaster of emotions ever. I cried, laughed, cried some more, and completely fell in love with them. A.R Hadley has such an amazing way of writing that I just couldn’t put the book down. It was like going into a time machine and traveling to the age of rock and roll. It’s realistic and beautiful. From the very beginning you become attached to the characters. ~ ~ If you’re into childhood sweethearts, to strangers, to a whole lot of crazy then just need to add Moonlight Drive to the top of your TBR. It’s filled with so many twists you won’t be able to put it down. You’ll cry and you might just want to throw the book across your room, but that's just part of the roller coaster Moonlight Drive is.
Who doesn't love a good childhood sweetheart troupe? Who also doesn't love Rock n Roll romances?
This story by far sucked me in within the first few chapters and I couldn't put it down. I found myself flipping through the pages so fast just to find out more of the world in Rock n Roll during the 80s and 90s but also learning about Dani and Nick.
The love story between the two characters was so realistic, raw and unforgiving. I felt like screaming wondering how many times can someones heart break!
As everything unfolds you get to know the characters more, you get to see how they feel, you get the raw unaltered emotions from them.
This book will take you in, tear you apart a few times and bring you back together whole again.
This is a definite must read for anyone loving romances in the rock n roll industry!
This was both a sweet read and one of heartbreak. Childhood friends Dani and Nick find themselves on very different roads in life. Both came from broken homes and a promise Nick made to Dani has been forgotten by him. Now Nick is a member of the biggest rock band of the day and Dani wants to get her foot in the door of the music business.
This story relies on timehops (which I'm not a fan of) to take you through their journey. It's one of the lifestyle of drugs, addicition, women and sex of a rockstar, Nick, and one of childhood memories, love, and a passion for music for Dani. Nick doesn't recognize Dani, she's changed, he thinks she's just another groupie, yet through it all he respects her, the only groupie who doesn't want to have sex with him.
I enjoyed it, but just had to keep checking which year we were in.
“Love doesn’t bend to conditions or understand like”
“Once upon a time, a boy promised a girl he would find her, but right now, it seemed that man didn’t know how to find anything...least of all himself.” Dani and Nick are true soulmates, they have looked out for each other as children from broken homes. Nick promises to make it big with his music and come back to rescue her. Years later she joined his tour, only he doesn’t recognize her.... this book jumped forward and backwards in time, Nick is now Nicki a world famous rockstar with all the groupies, alcohol and drugs that go along with that. A heartbreaking love story that grabs hold of you from Beginning to end. I couldn’t put this book down and while this is the first book I have read by this author it won’t be the last !
In true rock and roll style, this book deals with music, sex drugs, booze and, in some cases, self destruction which can be the result of the lifestyle. Music flows through the veins of both Nick and Dani, though Dani hides it. She is so beautiful and creative. Promises made when 15 and 13, are not kept, but Dani has a streak of tenacity beneath her sweet exterior and her search for her Nick, will not be denied. This book has straddled a fine line in showing the world of addiction, in that it underlines how insidious and unrelenting the hold it has on people and the longevity of denial and sheer dedication the addict has to their respective demon. I did find it hard to believe that Nick did not recognise Dani, but this did not diminish my enjoyment of the book, but served to further feed my wish to shake Nick! This has been a fabulous read and I loved that it spanned many years as it made the story so much more real. I loved Dani and was so pleased she had Jim! He is wonderful. 💖💖💖💖
I wasn't sure what to expect with this new to me author. I went into this book completely bling. Infact. I thought it was a paranormal book from the title. Was I ever surprised to flip pages into one of the most amazing Rockstar romance novels I've ever read. These characters, their story, it is everything you could love and want for this genre. Nicki and Dani were childhood friends when their lives changed. One for the better, one not. Chasing dreams, breaking hearts and many mistakes. Could they ever come together in the future? You will have to grab the book to find out. This book totally rocked my world. I've never felt so drawn to a story. So glad this book found me and I could sit down and enjoy it. Top 5 of my year for sure. 10 stars if I could.
There really are no words for this book except for ... wow! This is the most twisted and beautiful love story ever. There are so many twists and turns and moments when you hate both Nick and Dani, but yet you still pull for them. You still cry for them, and hope they get their happily ever after. This book is one that will stay with you for a long time. The story of childhood abuse, fame, addiction, and a love that never gives up!
This book honestly blew me away- and I couldn’t stop reading until the very last page! This is a must read story about the forgiveness and healing of love.
Remarkable writing with a story that is gripping. From a fool who loves love this is one of the best rocker stories I have read in a wile and so engaging with characters that I fell in love with. I had to get past some of these characters issues but it was such a compelling read that it was very easy to delve into this story! Absolutely riveting writing with an amazing love story that will bring you to the edge and teeter your heart over the edge and drop you into this world with a beat you will not soon forget!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
