With new knowledge, training, and practice under his belt, Terrence's Rank 1 abilities will be put to the test against the monsters in his path. The first semester at Prep is over, but an old tormentor, an unlikely instructor, a harsh test, and a tiresome journey will continue to push his limits. Can Terrence overcome them all? Will he buckle, or can the stress push him to Rank Up?
Elsewhere, Uncle Tom and his Dungeoneering team find something unexpected in the Dungeon. After months of fighting, they are ready to earn a profit for their toils. Can they handle the new challenge, or will they die like so many others before them? Will the risk be worth it?
Join Terrence and Tom for the Hunt in the second book of this LitRPG Fantasy Adventure! Dungeoneer, Book 2 in the series 'The Weight Of It All'.
After reading book 1 I picked up book two, hoping for improvement and Ren ranking up. We get some of that, but it's mostly more of the same.
The group is still at prep, where they're training in swords and improving their physical fitness while going to classes. There are a lot of magical academies out there in fantasyland, and this one just isn't doing it for me. The characters are fine, but there's no conflict. Sure, the nobles are no fun, but Ren & company don't interact with them. Only Zane does, and not much at that.
On top of a somewhat boring magical academy, Ren continues to level his affinity. He hasn't ranked up yet, but I have a feeling that when he does it will be underwhelming. Ren is a nice guy despite what his cousin thinks, but his affinity of WEIGHT isn't bringing anything new and interesting to the table.
While I'm reading book two, I'm wondering why he isn't practicing with a mace or a hammer instead of a sword? Wouldn't that make more sense for someone who can affect the weight of things (eventually?) But no, nobody mentions it.
I don't know. I liked book one, but book two was too much of the same thing all over again. The editing is better than in book one, although not by much, and the stats are again very straightforward.
I might read book three, but for the moment I've moved on to something else. 4/5*
Dungeoneer is the second book in The Weight of It All series, continuing Terrence’s journey as he trains at Prep Academy while learning to live with and develop his unique weight affinity. The story blends slice-of-life academy life with moments of danger and growth, giving plenty of room for slow but steady progression.
I really enjoyed the alternating dungeon sequences with Terrence’s uncle and his team. They add a different perspective to the world and bring tension and stakes in a nice contrast to Terrence’s school life. Terrence and his friends’ journey was another highlight, especially the test they faced—I won't say more because of spoilers.
The slow pace works very well here. Instead of rushing from one big fight to another, we get to see how Terrence thinks, experiments, and finds new ways to make his affinity useful. That careful, thoughtful approach is one of the things that makes this series stand out for me.
A great follow-up to Heavy, and I’m excited to keep following Terrence’s path.
It was interesting how the abilities work and are given. It would be interesting to get some history on the goddess and how the abilities came about. Cannot wait for more of the series
I don't know why I finished this story. It was not good at all. It read like it was written by Forrest Gump. Not a good use of first person narrative. No more J. J. Thorn for me.
This is a review for The Weight of it All 1-5 as I read them back to back.
This book is a mix of standard Lit RPG / magic school tropes with a somewhat unique magic system. The main character gets an unusual, and seemingly useless magic power during his age groups 'touch the magic crystal' er 'touch the statue' day. Weight, which lets him see the weight of stuff. Immediately, anyone familiar with things like this will suspect this is a prelude to some sort of gravity/density manipulation magic which will be extremely powerful.
It's all pretty good but a little too predictable and tropey. I probably will continue on though.
Another excellent entry in the series. I was glad to see the main characters of the story take some action. I do wonder how to story will proceed. Since we are shown it takes years to advance for many. How will we see the main characters advance over years of time when it’s taken two books to cover several months. We did see instances in this book where weeks would pass a month would pass so that is possible. However with so much pertinent information happening in the classroom it may be difficult to do something like this. I can’t wait for the next piece of the story hope it comes really fast.
Sidenote for the author I noticed in the table of contents I believe it was chapter 11 there was no link. Also I don’t know if it’s something you can do with Amazon but I follow you as an author but Amazon did not let me know the new book was out. I just happen to go searching through the authors I follow and saw the book and read it immediately.
I feel as though this story is less of a story but rather the cobbled together DM notes of the author. In some Litrpg books the protagonist takes off like rocket and there is no plot or thought about the progression or the magic system.
This however this book is not that case. The author drones on and on about the economics and harvesting practices of his world. He will bore you to death with 1% affinity growth. He however does not get to the point. These books are the boring attempt at writing by a economist/school teacher. The humorous thing about how slow and boring the book is. The over all time spent in the 2 book is 6 months. Which is a quick pace for plot.
The protagonist doesn’t actually get his new skill until 88% mark. Then the reader just has to put up with monologues by the professors. Shoot me this is dull.
Much like the first one. This is a litrpg book that seems written for middle schooler that have no experience with the genre. During one the classes the teacher went over what to do when they are being swarmed by monsters. The answers were to either run, fight, or hide. They needed a class to tell them that. The MC worked on his ability the whole book. He can see the weight of things. He worked on it by trying to see the weight quicker, keep it up longer, etc. How is that helpful for a dungeon adventurer. I keep waiting for something to happen, something cool, but it never did.
It's a very nice story, very slice of life with steady but slow progress. The world building is coming along, the characters/team is growing and learning. all good stuff. The characters themselves are alright they are coming along nicely. All around very pleasant read. The one thing that confused me with the concept of energy and mana cause a few times mana came up and I thought it might be a typo or are they the same thing? Regularless it seems like alot of global events are happening and I eager to see how this impacts the team
Maybe if you add the first book and this book together you may kinda have a complete story arc. But as it stands now, it is short and incomplete slice of life book that is missing much of the structure I would associate with a story/book. The world seems interesting and the magic/system is unique. The characters are still a little flat (but an improvement from book 1). And over all I feel like I am reading a jr. high book that doesn’t even reach the complexity of a YA series. Overall I am done with the series and won’t be suggesting this to friends.
I hope this book is more interesting than book one. I hope the protagonist uses weight better.
This series is far from what I thought it was going to be. While it is well written, it's not to my taste. It also clearly seems targeted at a younger audience.
I think this will be my last book in the series. It would be nice to see what "Heavy Ren" would get up to, however I can't deal with Uncle Tom and other POVs.
Likeable MC in a believable world with distinct characterization. The magic system is also different with levels hard earned and the MC is realistically powered.
Its more slice of life than conflict driven as the MC is just trying to get through life. There is no overarching antagonist, except if you count the distant and unknown goddess who grants their abilities.
Its a good thing the characters are interesting and i want to find out how they grow.
Finished the first book thinking the story is going somewhere so wanted to give this series a chance. I am sorry to say I finished the second by forcing myself to do it. I would not recommend this torture of a series to anyone. Complete waste of time.
The MC is not at all interesting. The powers are meh and the zero progress of the story in any reasonable manner.
My suggestion look to other series and skip this. Much better use of your precious time.
This series is fun and I am enjoying it but I really hope the author works on getting a decent editor. Using the wrong names and referring to the wrong timeframes are easy fixes, you just need to read what you just wrote. Having said that, this is an enjoyable enough story and I want to see where it goes.
I tried this one in the hope that the writing had grown enough to match the idea.
It did not. In fact the story has devolved to further match the poor writing. Entire sections make little sense. The direction of the main characters growth seems rather pointless. All in all, this one is more disappointing than the first book.
Terrence awaits his next challenge as he learns about his new an growing abilities .
Terrence over coming obstacles, short while interacting with his cousin John during an monster hunt with classmates deadly but successful . Not concerned about his cousin John ever again done an done . recommended reading exciting series . Look forward to the new book .
This book was more interesting than the first as so much more is happening. I really hate all the typographical errors throughout these books. At one point the author referrs to a character's mother as her father. It just really detracts from the story. I might continue this series but for now I am talking a break.
This is a well written book but they feel short. It is written in the form of a continuous light novel, with the books being installments. I like the novel magic system too
Its decent and engaging but adding in the tom side story is a bit much.. honestly its a filler for an already short story... book 1 and 2 could of been combined with a splurb of tom and it would of been better.. focus on one not two.
It takes the writer far too long to rank up the character. I thought the character progression would have been further along but its not and I'm already bored. Fingers cross the third book will have the action I require.
Purchased this edition on November 1, 2023, from Amazon for free. Before the Collapse (The Weight Of It All Omnibus, Books 1-3): A LitRPG Fantasy and Academy Adventure. Excellent RPG type of story line with a good story line and great characters.
DNF. Kept waiting for something to happen... but MC is more of a sidekick, a bad one. If food, it’d be gas station food that gave you a night in the bathroom.
More conflict in this than the first and the ending wasn't nearly as abrupt. Really enjoyed it, so much so I read it in a few hours. Can't wait for book 3!
