He's almost a priest, and I guess even holy men can fall…
Lily Damewood is trying (and failing) to claw her way out of her dark memories. Her weekly visit to Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris is supposed to be a way to help her move forward, even though she’s far from the praying type. She catches the eye of Salem Tempest, a seminary student at Notre Dame.
When an unlikely friendship forms between them—followed by a white hot attraction they desperately try to ignore—a revelation shakes them both to their core. Lily and Salem soon find themselves connected in powerful and unexpected ways.
Turns out, Lily isn’t the only heathen, and Salem is just the right person to stoke the fire within her, despite his sacred vow of celibacy...
HEATHENS is book 1 of the HEATHENS series. Book 2, MONSTERS, will release in spring 2021.
This story touched on the subject of human trafficking, the power of friendship between two strong women, and a steamy affair with a priest-in-training. While I loved the premise, the delivery was a bit weak and the ending seemed rushed. I wasn't a fan of all the time jumps but this was an okay story. The romance part was cute but I wish the taboo aspect was played up a bit stronger. The epilogue was satisfying.

3.5 Tik Tok Stars, again another find on Tiki tok.
I always want to start by saying I like my Dark Romance, black. The darker, the better. What is dark for some is not as dark for me. Heathens is dark, no doubt. It’s a medium grey for me; There are triggers, human trafficking, rap, kidnapping, and drugs. And again, it’s based on the catholic religion, so this could be a hard pass for some.
Lilly is a tortured soul who is coupling with survivor's guilt; two years prior, Lilly and her friend Evelyn were kidnapped; Lilly was able to escape when she went back with the authorities, she was gone. Lilly never gave up on finding her friend. She had found a new lead and started to put things in motion.
Salem is in seminary school and yet to have taken his vows. He is still battling with his demons and is a complex man. He is smitten with Lilly from the first time he saw her at church and can see her darkness.
The story is setting is in Paris, and I can say it’s an original storyline and didn’t feel recycled. The book is told mainly in Salem and Lilly’s POV. We also read Evelyn's pov; I can say some events I didn't see coming, and I love when that happens. Plus you can need go wrong with me when you have some of the seven deadly sins. Here is my concern, some parts were a little repetitive, I tried to feel the chemistry between the two characters, and I didn’t feel it until about sixty percent. I understand it's a slow burn for character growth, but it just wasn’t there, and I couldn’t feel their angst and turmoil. I will read the next book when it’s out this year.
This deals with some dark events namely human trafficking. The central story here revolves around Lilith an American girl living in Paris who has managed to escape from a kidnapping where she was going to be sold into slavery. Her friend Evelyn who was also taken at the same time wasn’t so lucky and now Lilith spends her time in Paris working on getting her back refusing to believe like all else that she is dead and gone.
Salem is a priest in training and he becomes fascinated with Lilith when he observes her regularly praying at his church where he has yet to take his final vows. His chaotic lifestyle choices and a personal tragedy led him to embrace this calling and what he believes is a greater purpose. From the moment he connects with Lily on a personal level he recognises the broken in her and she calls to his very soul.
The more time they spend together he swiftly concludes that's she holds equal importance for him to his faith and when their goals align their lives unexpectedly colliding he’s totally onboard the two joining forces to achieve their goals together.
So though this had an unconventional relationship at its centre it didn’t feel that taboo. It’s also very slow burn which it needed to be and this did work the two becoming friends first then lovers. It’s told from three POV’s Lilith, Salem and Evelyn and also skips back and forth in time from past to present.
It’s not really a dark read despite the subject matter and the romance here is actually very sweet and heartwarming. It’s very well written and was an easy read and it sets things up nicely for the next book in the series which is a stand-alone and Evelyn’s. The hero for that one is Benedict who we also meet here, I enjoyed this one a lot and do recommend it. I voluntary reviewed a copy of Heathen's.
Well, this was disappointing and it's no one's fault but my own. I expected too much from this book. I loved the title, the cover, the blurb, I wanted this to be awesome, but sadly, for me it wasn't that good.
First - I'm gonna take this off of my "dark" shelf because it doesn't deserve to be there. Sorry book, but you are NOT dark, at all. Yes, it deals with a heavy subject matter but all the gory details are skipped. How do you expect to raise awareness about a certain issue, to make me sympathize with the characters if you don't show me the bad and gruesome details?
Honestly, right from the start I couldn't connect with the writing, there was too much telling, not showing. It's like it starts from the middle, we're thrown into this story without any sort of background about these characters, for me there was no substance to make me care about the characters.
And later on, there were certain parts that were just too unrealistic
Romance was mellow, too instalovey. I did like the setting (Paris, France) however. It was probably my favorite thing about this novel.
Heathens by Amanda Richardson is book one in the Heathens Duet. It is a dark romance novel with taboo elements.
"I am merely a caged hawk, examining and learning my prey. A queen of deception. One day, I will find a way to attack where they least suspect it."
Tragedy struck in Lily's life when she least expected. Youth and innocence now lost, she clings to her plan for revenge.
“When was the last time you believed in something so fiercely that you were willing to look past everything else?”
Salem was once on a different and destructive path. But then he find purpose and a calling, a way to atone for his sins.
“In a world where everyone wears a mask, it’s a privilege to see a soul.”
I went into this book pretty much blind. Having never read this author, I requested to read this novel based on the blurb. But, after that, I never went back to the synopsis because I wanted to be surprised....surprised does not even cover my reaction when reading this novel. Shock, awe, astonishment...all of these.
“You never really know a person until they show you their soul.”
The way the author chose to set up this story was originally a bit perplexing to me. Reading further into the story, I got it. What a brilliant tactic! Although not a typical writing/reading pattern, this perspective made the intensity of the story come to life in an even greater measure.
"Instead of slaying my demons, I like to open them up and find out what makes them tick.”
The moments of suspense came in waves. I'd think that I knew everything, and then another twist in the mystery that surrounded Heathens would surface. Feeling as though I went from the ride of a crazy roller coaster to being on pins and needles, I read, single-minded in my pursuit of the next thrill, the next secret revealed, the next bomb to be dropped. It was exhilarating!
"Until now, I was scared to reveal the darkest parts of me to the lightest person I’d ever known. I was terrified he’d run away, cut me out of his life, and I’d lose the best thing that’s happened to me in a long time. Instead, he took hold of that darkness—the one that overtook me at times—and swallowed it. Swallowed it whole."
Through tragedy and despair, Author Amanda Richardson cultivated a chilling and eye-opening story of broken souls, shattered lives, fate, and the redeeming power of love.
“Thank you for pulling the storm out of me, over and over again.”
Wow! This is my first read by Amanda and what an incredible journey. Her writing is flawless and her words are poetic. Lily and Salem had me envisioning every moment along with their walks through Paris, and the tension that sparked the pages between these characters.
This is a dark romance, but even so, there's a sweetness that had me rooting for Salem and Lily. So many obstacles and secrets are woven into this intricate tale.
I would definitely recommend this incredible read. And I can't wait for the next book!!
4.5 Stars! What a book! Completely different from what I typically read... when I hear dark, I usually shy away. I'm so happy I gave Heathens a chance after a friend recommended it. Amanda Richardson delivered one hell of a journey, and I was a nervous wreck wondering what would become of these characters.
I LOVED Ms. Richardson's writing and I cannot wait for book 2!!
I received an advanced reader copy of Heathens from the author in exchange for an honest review. This is the first book of Ms. Richardson's I have read, and I went in relatively blind with the exception of hearing the words 'dark romance' and I admit I did read the short goodreads blurb before cutting myself off. I don't like to be spoiled... and as anyone that reads my reviews knows, you won't be getting any major spoilers in this review either.
The cover is *GORGEOUS* and hooked my attention right away. Not to mention, there are a few, hot little teasers that I saw on Facebook. I found myself sucked into the ambience of Paris straight away... Even though I've never been lucky enough to have been to the City of Light, from Ms. Richardson's meticulous descriptions alone, I could easily envision myself with some of its sweet treats, waiting to get swept into a dance beneath the Eiffel Tower.
Bar none my favorite parts of reviews... are quoting my favorite lines from the books I read and this book is no exception. There were several passages, quotes, lines... that I highlighted and had to try and whittle down to decide which to post here, because they all just clamored to me. Here are the top 3... Take a second and let them marinate for a second after you read each one... Together, they're remarkable. Individually... profound.

Ahhh! So good, right? Because I hate giving spoilers, sometimes I know it makes my reviews a little hard to nail down... but you can always read someone else's reviews if you really are into all of that spoiling business. I can just tell you what I like and how a book made me feel. I can tell you that Heathens didn't read like a typical 'Dark' romance. It was murky... the lines were kind of smudged in places. Haha. *I will throw in a trigger warning ahead for the Catholic Church mentions and the decidedly, not-so toeing of that smudged line, however!*
Oooh, there was a playlist, a spectacular playlist, in fact. And you all know how I feel about Spotify playlists when I read, so I was super stoked about that!
The only slight criticism I had was, it was a tad predictable and I found my attention wandering in the middle of the book, just a bit. But I was proofreading this as a second set of eyes for the author and I think it may have just been because this book was quite long and I was coming off of 3 edits in a row and needed a break, haha! However, I am intrigued to see what happens in the next installment in the series. Just to clarify and as a side-note, Heathens is *not* a cliffhanger.
3.5 'your halo's full of fire' stars, that I will round up to 4 on the goodreads scale. Thank you again to the author for the courtesy of her ebook in advance of its release.
“When that happens,” he murmurs, brushing my hair behind my ear with his hand, “I will dance with you in the dark.”
I did sorta like this but there a bit much internal monologue that it dragged a bit. I liked that it became a taboo relationship between them but I somehow feel disconnected with the characters at some parts.
There are flashbacks here that shows how their experiences affected them in the present. Human trafficking was also somewhat a big part of the story. It was only somewhat because it wasn't that big. They did a bit of sneaking to gather information but otherwise, the whole thing resolved itself a little too smoothly.
I grew up in a Catholic background and have 2 uncles that are priests - they would die if they knew I read such book. Hahaha. The whole I'm-going-to-be-a-priest-but-you-make-me-want-to-give-it-all-up was a nice premise and was exploited nicely but he was already doubting his godly path when they started conversing. I recited "Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned." a little too much while reading this. Especially, when they started acting on their lust towards each other.
Felt exactly like Dean. Just a wolf in a sheep's clothing. All faith forgotten.😂
“Good, Lilith Damewood. Because although it’s fun chasing you, it’ll make things much harder for me if you run.” Don't think it was a whole lot of chasing though.
There's a lot of nice quotes in this though. Haha.

10 "Let me sin with you" Stars!!!!!
I don't know what to do. I am in complete awe. Amanda knocked it out of the park. She threw a Hail Mary pass. She recorded a hat-trick. She made a buzzer beater shot at half-court. My first book by Amanda, and it's a masterpiece. I am kicking myself for not reading anything by her sooner. WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH ME??? I'm going to fix that though, every book she's written will be devoured. You can count on it.
'Heathens' was an experience. This story was so full of life. It captivated me. I latched on and prepared myself for an exhilarating ride. I was enthralled by its darkness and beauty. I was living and breathing this story. Salem and Lily took over my life. I was hypnotized by the complexity of these two characters. I couldn't for the life of me put my kindle down. I needed this story like I needed my next breath. I needed every sin Salem was willing to commit. I needed to know what was going to happen next. I needed, I needed, I needed.
"Her soul has been chipping away at mine since that very first day, and I can feel myself reworking my soul to fit around hers."
SALEM TEMPEST!!!!! He is religion, and I am on my knees praying to him. I absolutely 100% freaking LOVED him!!! I cannot even describe what Salem did to me. It's like I was in a trance, and it was just him. He made me feel alive. I would sin with Salem every day of the week, and more so on Sunday.
"Together, we were a clashing juxtaposition."
Lily and Salem were two souls entwined with hearts that were made to beat as one. These two made me feel so many emotions. I was lost within them. I was engrossed in their story. There are so many parts I loved. So many parts I highlighted. But, the dancing scene, ugh, I just fell so hard! I loved everything about it. Lily and Salem will forever have a piece of my heart.
AMANDA RICHARDSON, I CAN'T EVEN. AND YES I'M SCREAMING BECAUSE OH MY GOSH THIS BOOK WAS EVERYTHING!!! I LOVED THE STORY. I LOVED LILY AND SALEM. I LOVED YOUR WRITING. AND YOUR WORDS? OH MY, YOUR WORDS WERE INTOXICATING!!!! CAN 2018 GET HERE ALREADY? BECAUSE I NEED BELIEVERS RIGHT NOW!!! Oh, and can I have Salem? PLEASE?!
Votre âme a été gravée pour moi. Votre cœur a été synchronisé à chaque battement de coeur. Nous ne sommes pas deux, mais un. Laissez-nous pécher. Laissez-moi pécher avec vous.
I'm rubbing my fingers together in glee. This book is going to be good. I can just tell. This girl won't be sleeping tonight. ;)
. . . . . . . .
"I want to burn his kingdom down, make him pay for the terrible things he's done and continues to do, and then rise and rebuild from the ashes. Humbled. Righteous. Resurrected."
OH DAMN.....HOLY CRAP..... I'M STRUCK SPEECHLESS!
HEATHENS by Amanda Richardson was the first book I read from her, and I was hooked. From start to finish, Salem and Lily's story was simply mesmerizing! A true form of love, loss, and redemption, their journey is only just the beginning. It's dark, gritty, with a hint of taboo.
A perfect mind f**k read. So many secrets, betrayal at it's finest hour... READ THIS BOOK AND HAVE YOUR MIND BLOWN.
The cover and blurb grabbed me but the stellar writing and unique storyline hooked me. Amanda is a new to me author and now she's on my must read list! I cannot wait for book 2 and to work my way through her backlist!
Heathens is unlike anything I have read. That is the first thing I want to say. This book has themes I have read, human trafficking, sex trade, and all that entails. BUT the storyline is different, engaging, and deeply rooted in the Catholic religion.
Salem is in the process of becoming a priest when he finds the woman of his dreams. Now he will have to make a lot of decisions for his future. Lilly is that woman and she is in the process to find her friend that was taken two years ago in a sex trafficking act. While Salem and Lilly are in the middle of finding their relationship, these two will also engage in finding the people behind this horrible act and find Lilly's friend.
I highly recommend this story if you are looking for something unique and intriguing to read.
I read this book in one sitting because I could not for the life of me put it down until it was finished. It's been 3 days, and I'm still hungover. I've still yet to pick up another book. It's still on my mind continuously through out my day. She put everything into this book. Every time I close my eyes and think about this book, I'm in Paris instantly. I can see, taste, and smell everything. Sadly, I've never actually been. The layers of this story, the sexual tension, the plot, the twists and turns, the characters, the romance is just top notch. Hands down, one of the best books I've ever read. One that I will keep with me always!
Amanda's books always have layers to them that pull you in and Heathens is no different. In fact, it's her best yet. Here you'll find a story that delicately and poetically teeters on the connections between sensuality and spirituality. There are taboo sexy moments, and they are SEXY, but the book is so much more than that. It explores the balance between faith and love, darkness and light, and the choices they lead you to. I was obsessed with Lilith and Salem. They're characters have a depth to them and they each pull each other to one another in a way that feels so natural, addicting, and most of all necessary. They create that light and dark balance. I can't say enough about this book and why you should read it. I loved it and them, and I can't wait to read the next part of the duet.
HEATHENS was different from Amanda’s other stories. There was this dark, revengeful feel throughout the entire book and the emotions were addicting throughout. There were times I could feel the hate permeating through my bones as I read and I sought revenge as much as our main characters, Lily and Salem.
“It might not happen today or even this week. Perhaps not even this year. But one day, they’ll see the mask fall from my face- the monster I had to face alone. The darkness I have to contend with. The thirst for revenge that no one understands.”
I have to say, I’m extremely surprised the religious aspect of this story didn’t deter me away, as it has in the past. Now, I’m not religious by any means. None. Zip. Nada. But, for whatever reason, reading stories that incorporate religion as a theme are a huge turn off for me. I wouldn’t say it’s a hard limit, because I WILL read it (obviously), but it usually weirds me out and I have a hard time concentrating and enjoying the story. Perhaps its Amanda’s ability to write incredible, in-depth stories that sucks you in and has you piecing it together from the get-go. Yeah, that’s what kept me distracted.
Salem (James McAvoy is the muse for this character and LORD JESUS I’d let him take me to church), came off as this well-mannered, good natured seminary student- as I suppose the vast majority of them are. He was so slick, so sly, living the various interests and activities that make up his life. He was an all-around good person, and didn’t expect anything in return for befriending Lily.
With that being said, the angst between these two was smoldering. Lily, being the revengeful spit-fire she is, had one mission in life: ending the darkness that taints Paris for her. As her friendship with Salem began to grow, she never lost sight of her mission. The romance of this book was kept on the back burner, but it was definitely present. I was stuck inside Lily’s head trying to figure out her master plan, super glued.
I highly recommend you one-click this dark romance, along with any other of Amanda’s books! Her writing is meticulous, words are enchanting, and books are memorable. Overall, 4.5 Hail Mary's and I need Believers stat ;)

Where in the world is the THOUSAND star button because damn this book deserves one!
OH MY FREAKING GOODNESS! <--- YES I JUST SAID THAT! I have only recently discovered Amanda Richardson during an author takeover a few months ago so HEATHENS happens to be my very first read of hers and what an incredible introduction into her beautifully poetic and captivating writing style. This is hands down one of those kind of stories that will capture your soul and hold on tight until you're left with your head reeling and your heart beating outta your chest. Trust me. I finished this story a couple of days ago and my heart is still reeling from this dark romance filled with choices, sin, revenge, and the ultimate redemption.
These five lost and twisted souls have some of the best character development I have read in such a long time. Lilith Damewood and Salem Tempest have the kind of chemistry that all romance readers crave and I couldn't help but fall in love with their story - past, present and future. I devoured their story every free moment I had because once you see the desire between these two you won't be able to put it down.
I cannot wait until BELIEVERS to see another couple (Evelyn and Benedict) get their HEA (at least I hope that will be the case)!
"I have the taste of her embedded in my soul - the feel of my maker behind it all."
This was my first book by Amanda Richardson and I am hooked on her words from this day forward! I couldn't wait to dive into Heathens and it did not disappoint. Such a complex and taboo story of revenge and redemption. I loved how Salem's faith was tested and how the path he thought he would take started to become confusing thanks to Lily. His journey was handled so well that I felt his struggle and loved watching him find his way. I don't want to give much of the plot away - I have been weary of reading of one of the storylines here but I loved how the author tackled the situation, and I LOVED how they took down their pawn in the whole game. Vague enough?? That's all I can say without spoiling any part of the story!
"I want to burn his kingdom down, make him pay for the terrible things he's done and continues to do, and then rise and rebuild from the ashes. Humbled. Righteous. Resurrected."
If you're a fan of suspenseful and dark taboo reads, I highly recommend this amazing story!
Heathens is an utterly captivating and mesmerizing read. I am always drawn to love stories that are a bit darker, taboo, and that may nudge me out of my comfort zone, but what I ended up getting from this novel far surpassed my expectations. I was pulled into the story right from the prologue and was held captive by the author’s rich descriptions and beautiful prose until the last page. Heathens is a love story at its very core, but it is also a thought-provoking read that I haven’t been able to get out of my mind since I finished reading it.
Feeling a story and being affected by it is key for my reading enjoyment. I need to be invested in the lives of the characters and to feel as though I am right there with them, experiencing all of their highs and lows. Heathens delivered. There wasn’t one moment when I felt disconnected. I was transported to the bustling streets and sidewalk cafés of Paris, and was a willing voyeur in the lives of Lilith and Salem.
While Lilith and Salem were both living very different lives in the City of Light, there was an undeniable magnetism between them. Lilith was struggling on a daily basis, fighting through her anger and loneliness. Salem was no stranger to the darkness that resides within, but had found his own peace in the house of God. Lilith and Salem just seemed to fit together. They complemented each other, fed a need within each other. Even though anything more than mere friendship would have been forbidden for them, I couldn’t help but believe that they were meant to be more than friends – they were meant to be.
The feelings that Salem was feeling toward Lilith were a struggle for him. He didn’t want to have to choose between his love for God and God’s work and his love for a woman. Finding God at his weakest time had taken Salem off a dangerous path, how could he turn his back on that? But even the holiest men are merely flesh and blood, with needs and desires. Even the most devout can falter.
“I was so afraid of being the bad one – so afraid of corrupting him. But as his palm slides lower, I realize he’s a violent sin wrapped in wholesome eyes.”
Heathens is a multi-layered story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. It made me feel a gamut of emotions. It is powerful, relevant, chilling, sensual, romantic, and all-consuming. It will make you root for good over evil, right over wrong, and love overall.
There is nothing ordinary about this book, it’s extraordinary.
Oh, and I wholeheartedly agree, everyone needs a Rosemary in their life!
Needing a dark romance to sink your teeth into? Lately, I have been stuck in a bit of a reading rut. I am finding it hard to get into books and find time to sit and read a book and get hooked on the story. I figured reading a dark romance would hook me. This book started with Evelyn whom we can see is a sex worker. Then the book jumps to Lilith aka Lily and we discover that years ago she and Evelyn (her best friend) were traveling and that they were kidnapped and trafficked. Lilith managed to escape but had to leave her friend Evelyn behind but to this day has not stopped searching for her. Evelyn is also a fighter and dreams of the day she can finally escape; she just has to find the right timing. Enter Salem Tempest - he had lost his path a few years ago and was headed on a downward spiral but the Catholic Church saved him and he decided to enrol in a seminary school and train to become a priest. That was until he meets Lilith and he is captivated by her and wants to know her as he is drawn to her. The story will travel down their paths of Salem being tempted and having to face the hard choices of doing what he believes in and reconsidering whether priesthood is his journey? Can Lilith find her friend before it's too late and which path will Salem choose to go down when he is faced with the hardest choice of his life? Heathens was a slow book to start off but as the story got deeper and twisted, I hoped Lilith would find Evelyn and be reunited before it's too late and she is lost forever in a world of trafficked girls. I am now looking forward to reading Book #2 which will be Evelyn's story.
Going into this book I wasn't sure how exactly I was going to feel about it, hands down it's was one of the best books I've read this year. It's dark, maybe more murky though, but I loved it, all the twist and turns left me . I couldn't put it down and if I could get away with it and get my job done I would have been reading it at work as well. Hell of a time to start a new job you know when your stuck in a pretty amazing book, lets hope I didn't screw anything up day dreaming about what was going to happen next.
This is the first that I've read from Amanda Richardson, and I'm delightfully surprised. I love her writing style and very rarely do I pick up a brand new author and fall in love with the story and their writing. I look forward to reading more from her and with that being said I can't wait for the next book in this series as well.
edited to add** I can't stop thinking about this story and Salem and Lilly. I really think that everyone should give this one a try.
What a great plot! This is my first time reading this author and I’m hooked! I really enjoyed getting to know these characters and the twist everything took at the end...
Two hundred and ninety five billion stars because Salem Tempest!!!
Paris might be the City of Love but for Lilith Damewood, it's tainted with the guilt of having lost her friend. Everyday is a struggle to crawl away from the haunting memories that eat at her. So she immerses herself into her photography. Her soul is at unrest until she meets Salem.
Salem Tempest, a seminary student has committed many sins in life and repents for them everyday. His life revolves around the Church, his faith and his teachings. He is determined to follow the path God and his mentor paved until Lilith.
Brought together by fate, Salem and Lily form a unique friendship that grows into intense everyday, making their connection that much more powerful. Both are incapable of letting go of the other. For Salem, any sort of relationship with Lily means straying from his God, his duties. Lily believes she can only cause ruin in Salem's life.
When all else fail, will love prevail?
I am screaming while writing this because Salem Tempest is not real and that is a gross misfortune for the whole of humanity. (Okay mostly, me!) I am so in love with Salem and Lilly and Eve and Amanda and basically everything related to this story that I can't even contain myself.
Salem is the book boyfriend of my dreams, y'all! He is passionate yet tender, calm yet a force to be reckoned with. The dichotomy of his character made me adore him. The way he could be calm on the outside while thinking all those ravenous and sinful thoughts made me want to climb him. He is such a beautiful soul and GOD the way he worships Lily makes me cry ugly tears. I just really love him, okay.
Lily oh my sweet baby!! She is such a strong woman capable of insurmountable badassery. I fricking adore her broken little warrior self. She is the kind of friend every woman needs. Her devotion to Eve, her photography and then Salem made my heart ache. What an inspirational character.
Also, let it be known that I am in utter awe of Amanda Richardson. She has blown my brains and heart to smithers. I have become a life long fan and I need to devour every work she has written. Amanda managed to take such a controversial topic and beautifully made it her own. She writes like a poet, y'all and it's an incredible thing to witness.
A hauntingly beautiful story of love, faith and vengeance. Two souls, struggling to find their path after loss, find comfort in one another, and form a bond that will impact their lives and others immeasurably.
I will say upfront, that while this is noted as a dark romance, I would say it is more on Contemporary with dark undertones, specifically involving human trafficking and forbidden love. Maybe I have a high tolerance for the dark and twisted, so while this book has some dark themes, none are told in such detail as to disturb the reader.
Her soul has been chipping away at mine since that very first day, and I can feel myself reworking my soul to fit around hers.
What I loved most about this story was the character development, specifically the main characters Lilith "Lily" Damewood and Salem Tempest (great name). Their backgrounds couldn't be more different, but their paths continue to cross, as if fate might be involved. And what's most interesting is how their paths change for one another.
"Fate as in fatum, or fatality. That even if you know you'll meet a tragic end, you must fulfill it. There is no escape."
Individually, both characters struggle with their attraction, Lily because she shouldn't want the Salem, and Salem because he can't have Lily. Or can he?
Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned . . . and thought about sinning . . . and fantasized about sinning . . .
Each moment spent with Lily has Salem reevaluating the direction of his life. His pride in his religious path is challenged as he tries to fight the growing attraction to Lily. I loved his honest and inner struggle.
"Do you know what you need?" To be adored. Cherished. Worshipped. Loved. Held. "To be savored for exactly how you are."
This story has several POVs, with the primary being from Lily and Salem, along with various timelines. Normally this come off as disjointed, but the author makes it work, maintaining a good flow throughout and building on the sexual tension between Lily and Salem. With each chapter, their connection is more evident and it contrasted perfectly with the physical struggle between Auguste Martin and Evelyn Snow.
I love finding gems like this book, something that was never on my radar. I only discovered it scrolling thru FB, seeing the cover posted by another blogger, and being immediately intrigued. After reading the synopsis and glancing at a couple reviews, I was sold. And after taking that chance on a new-to-me author, it’s rewarding when a book like this exceeds my expectations. While I understand that this book is a bit of a departure from the author’s other releases, I am thrilled to find an author to add to my collection of favorites. I'll definitely be checking out her other books.
“'When two Scorpios make a love match, it is a fierce—a tempest—of intense passion. Obsession. They move forward at an accelerated pace. Some might call it foolish. Other times, they’re mated for life; their stingers keeping all others away, their understanding of each other unlike any other.'”
This was my first Amanda Richardson read and honestly, I knew going into this book just how much I would love this woman's words. HEATHENS is the book that has solidified a hard core fan in me when it comes to Amanda's work. This was the perfect amount of dark, steamy, and romantic. It's the kind of book that makes you question yourself on whether or not you should be reading it; a book that pushes you past the boundaries you have set for yourself. But you continue to read it anyway because it is THAT captivating.
The dark and electric chemistry between Lily and Salem, just the WRONGNESS of it all, is part of what makes this book a page turner. There's this allure that's...sinful yet can't be ignored between the two.
"She looked… unhinged. A wandering soul looking for some good in the world. And she didn’t even realize how desperate she was for it."
"Something—something about her sends my mind buzzing, splintering and racing, swallowing me whole. The internal battle I feel just being close to her is terrifyingly wonderful."
"Salem watched me with interest, but not in the way I was used to—the way anyone who recognized me watched me. There was no pity in his glances."
"At that moment, I feel a kinship with Salem—a connection that binds us together. Even though he is what he is, and I am what I am, somehow, we’ve found each other. Somehow, we’ve been pulled together. I feel less alone."
Despite what you may think, given what Salem and Lily are deep down, complete opposites who should attract, it's the darkness in Lily and the light in Salem that lure them into one another; that inevitably binds them together.
“'Sometimes it’s like that optimism is trying to fight the darkness. And that darkness… it consumes me sometimes. It’s hard to look at the bright side when that happens.' When I look back up at Salem, he’s watching with the kind of intensity that weakens my knees. 'When that happens,' he murmurs, brushing my hair behind my ear with his hand, 'I will dance with you in the dark.'”
"Together, we were a clashing juxtaposition."
This is the perfect tale of how sometimes, light and dark are what is needed to fill that empty space in ones soul. And Lily and Salem were that and more for each other. This is one of the best dark romances I have ever read. Why? Because it pushed me out of my comfort zone and I STILL got on my hands and knees to praise it.

5 “Sinful” Stars!
Amanda Richardson is a complete genius. She has written Heathens in such a way that you are 100% sucked into the darkness of the story, unable to come up for air, let alone blink, until the very last page.
Heathens is the story of Lillith (Lily), who ends up in a very tragic situation while living in Paris with her best friend. The premise of the story is based on Lily finding a way to get revenge on the man who ruined her life.
She meets Salem Tempest, a seminary student studying to become a Catholic priest. Of course, there is chemistry between the two of them, so much so that I felt the yearning of them wanting to be together, but knowing they can’t because of his religion. It. Was. Painful.
Lily finds out who the man is that hurt her, and gets the shock of her life when it is someone that Salem knows. Salem agrees to devise a plan with Lily to get the revenge that she is so desperate for.
Throughout the entire story, I was on pins and needles. Seeing this plan develop and then set into motion, wondering what was going to happen, I felt like I couldn’t breathe. I was so nervous, yet couldn’t stop turning the pages. I need to know that Lily would get her revenge. I needed to know that her and Salem were going to be together. I needed a lot, and Amanda certainly delivered.
Heathens ends with a bang. I won’t say whether or not Lily and Salem got revenge…but I will say I was satisfied to my core. Whether that makes me a dark person or not, I don’t know…and I don’t care.
This was my first story by Amanda Richardson, and if her other stories are anything like this one, I won’t be able to sleep until I’m finished with them. Please do yourself a HUGE favor, and read this book when it is released!
Damn... I don't know where to start... Salem and Lilith took me on journey, which I would love to visit time and time again. The relationship, which this couple had, did come easy to grew by faith. As a reader, I love getting into the minds of the characters especially when it is told in more than one pov. The pov weren't just told with Salem and Lily in mind but it was told by poor Evelyn and evil Auguste pov as well.
There are so many quotes from this story, which I had to stop and highlight and do a second read. I guess that took me twice as long but oh well. It was definitely worth it. One of my favorite: When two Scorpios make a love match, it is a fierce— a tempest—of intense passion. Obsession. They move forward at an accelerated pace. Some might call it foolish. Other times, they’re mated for life; their stingers keeping all others away, their understanding of each other unlike any other. Salem and Lily meeting was fate and even destined by God. I loved how their relationship through out the story and how they were team up and take the evil Auguste. The take down of Auguste was done for Eve but it was also done for many like her.
I won't spoil anything for the reader because you have to sift through the pages yourself. Trust me it will be worth it. You want to follow the holy journey of faith and love with Salem. You want to seek with vengeance with Lilith. You want to find and make whole what is Evelyn. I need the second book, Believer, like now until then I'm okay with being a heathen.
This is a new-to-me-author and I decided to go in blind after reading the blurb. I neither avoid or seek these type of forbidden priest stories out, but I am generally wary about how they are handled. In this case however, I have to say I quite enjoyed it.
This story is set in Paris and the descriptive writing really captures the atmosphere and sentiment of Paris. Salem is a priest-in-training who comes across a troubled Lily in the Notre Dame church. This is a well-written and well-paced story. There are multiple points of views and there are time jumps which did not bother me or distract from the unfolding storyline - but it could bother others. There is more going on in this story than just a forbidden priest romance. The underlying premise and the reason for which Salem and Lily first meet has darker themes.
I appreciated that this wasn't just a salacious story about a priest falling from grace but a thoughtful and compelling romance about friendship, faith and love. Salem and Lily have great chemistry. The interest and tension between them is there from the start. This is not instalust or instalove but a progressive build of their relationship as Salem comes to terms with his wayward thoughts and feelings for Lily. Salem is quite poetic, deeply insightful and magnetic. He is a very well-developed character and I was instantly drawn to him. He has a dark side that matches Lily's haunted soul and together they set out to right the wrong that has been done. I won't say much about the plot, but I found this to be a poignant read with an uplifting ending which sets up the next book nicely.
