AJ Skelly (also writing as April J. Skelly) is an author, reader, and lover of all things fantasy, medieval, and fairy-tale-romance. And werewolves. She has a serious soft spot for them. As an avid life-long reader and a former high school English teacher, she's always been fascinated with the written word. She lives with her husband, children, and many imaginary friends who often find their way into her stories. They all drink copious amounts of tea together and stay up reading far later than they should.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like if Jacob ever got his own story? Well, calling all Twilight lovers - “First Shift” is the book for you!
Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love with girl. Boy accidentally bites girl. Girl turns into a werewolf. Can girl forgive boy? Can girl fall in love with boy? Eeeek!!!!!!
In this fast paced YA paranormal romance, werewolf Sam accidentally bites Megan, the love of his life, causing her to turn into a werewolf. She is scared as she tries to navigate new waters, being newly made into a creature she didn’t know existed outside of books. But to make matters worse, someone keeps trying to kill her. Can Megan forgive Sam for uprooting her entire world? And more importantly, can Megan survive this new world?
Warning! This book ends in a cliffhanger, but i can already tell it will be well worth the wait.
This was my first time reading this author and it is clear she knows how to tell a story. I cannot wait to see what else she comes up with and I’m excited to see this series through.
My only complaint is I wanted more introduction of Sam’s and Megan’s love story. I wanted to see how he fell In love with her. Yes, I totally geek out over the small moments.
For lovers of “Twilight” series and “Crave” series this book is made for you!
Book rating: pg/pg-13. Sex is alluded to but all scenes fade to black.
Update: 10/23 - it’s even better after having read the entire series! Going back to book one is like getting a hug from a friend you haven’t seen in ages! • I had such a great time reading this books! I found myself thinking about it while at work and excited to find out what happened next. While I’ve not read a ton of paranormal fiction (a lot of them are not my jam with the steam/spice levels) this one really fun! • It was a little hard to get into, as you’re literally dropped right into the world and the action starts right away. But once you’re in, you’re invested and it’s really hard to put the book down! I ordered book two before I’d even finished the first 😂 • 4.5 out of 5 stars 🌟
Fans of Twilight or werewolf books will love this book.... This book is soooo good. From the very beginning, I was drawn in because of the emotional stakes. Sam, a werewolf teen who is madly in love with Meg, a normal human-turned werewolf. Meg doesn't want to stay a werewolf. Sam wants her to stay and be his mate forever. The tension between them, with Meg's indecisiveness about being wolf or human, scattered with plenty of action scenes, was awesome. There was also an underlying plot thread that hints at a second book, but it wasn't a cliffhanger. The character development is awesome in this book. I fell in love with Sam and Meg, and I genuinely cried when Sam and a certain character had a reconciliation. They all had their quirks, and all the characters felt...real. I especially loved what Meg's grandpa said about love being a choice! So glad I'm not the only one wanting to preach this from the pages. Love is a choice. You can choose to love someone, despite everything, everyday. That was a great message of this book. Fair warning, this is a steamy read. And I don't mean erotica-I don't read erotica. I just mean that there was lots of passionate kissing, a few conversations about sex, and sex scene off the page. There was a lot of description of passion and physicality. As a married woman, I have no problem with this, and I am glad the author had the characters married before they engaged in this behavior. However, for singles or those who want to guard their hearts and minds from such things until they are ready, this is your fair warning. Overall, a great fantasy romance in the vein of werewolf books.
It's a little cliche for a werewolf book to have a Wolfe family, but don't let that scare you off. Although this isn't my typical go-to genre, I found it to be interesting and entertaining. I love the world Skelly created, merging humans with werewolves. Although the main characters are teens, there are many moments of swoon, danger, and mystery swirling around them.
Sam and Megan are believable protagonists, acting their ages with the drama, jealousy, indecisiveness, and immaturity, but after a slowish accidental start, the growth that occurred within each of them and between them was as intense as the flourishing plot. I found myself deeply caring about what would happen and wondering how it would all resolve, especially when a few twists made their appearances.
This isn't a one-and-done story, but is the start of something intriguing, and I'm looking forward to reading more to see how it will all come together.
Content: moderate (PG-13) romance (passionate kissing, some innuendo, fade-to-black between a married couple, frank talk of sex); mild+ (PG/PG-13) violence (wolf bites and fights/injuries); mild language
*I received a complimentary copy. All opinions expressed are my own and were voluntarily given.*
I’ve been so curious and stoked to try this series ever since it came out and it didn’t disappoint! You’re thrown into the action and conflict from the very beginning, which IS a little jarring at first and did take me a minute to latch onto the characters with such a breakneck beginning, but things do slow down enough to ground the reader more before taking off again.
The characters are all great and very fleshed out, and I like that Megan’s very understandable anger at Sam for accidentally turning her into a werewolf was resolved early on so that I didn’t have to endure half the book being annoyed out of my mind by her by-then-it-would-be petty anger. And Sam is such a respectful sweetheart he made me melt with how much he cares about Megan and his pack. 🥰🥰 I’m also really excited that the next book is about Kyp and Rachel as I really liked them.
The werewolf and pack dynamics and how they work within a character and in today’s modern society were extremely fleshed out and easy to understand and picture, but were never once given to us in a huge info dump or in random or awkward ways—everything had an explanation place that made sense and was never once contrived or out of the blue, so kudos to the author for that!
And while the romance was cute and sweet this is a marriage of convenience between two older teens (18 and 17) and this is the first ever book I’ve read where the kissing got VERY heavy at times—we’re talking mentions of tongue and everything—and made me use the “very detailed” in my content section for the first time rather then just “not or semi detailed”. There’s also a vague fade to black and a possible eluded to fade to black, but nothing beyond characters wanting/desiring each other emotionally so clean but a very high PG-13 level clean in my opinion. The kissing got a bit much for me a couple times but otherwise I thought it was fine though everyone’s romance scale is going to be different.
A very romancy, yet action/tension packed first book that I super enjoyed! Can’t wait for my mood to allow me to read the next one!
‼️Content‼️

This was so good!!! I’ve had my eye on this book for months and it did not disappoint. I would’ve devoured it in a day if it weren’t for adulting. XD
The story wastes no time getting down to the nitty gritty as Megan is accidentally bitten by her friend Sam Wolfe. It’s clear in the beginning they’d started developing feelings for the other, but unfortunately there are laws that forbid werewolf/human relationships.
The story then takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions as Megan learns to cope with life as a werewolf. When it’s revealed she is also Sam’s mate, Megan must choose between going back to being human after the first full moon following her change and lose her relationship with Sam OR accept that she might have fallen in love and stay forever with Sam as a werewolf.
A few things to look forward to: • Fake dating • Marriage for convenience • and “oh god they were roommates!” ;)
All my favorite tropes rolled into one book!
The story ends on a bit of a cliffy. There is definitely more to come in this world as the Wolfe pack readies to defend their home against a new enemy in town, which puts the entire human race and werewolf population at risk of annihilation.
I said it once but I’ll say it again: I loved this story and all of its characters. Especially Sam and Megan and Megan’s best friend Rachel (she gets extra kudos for being the ultimate BFF!) I’ve already preordered my physical copy of this book. I can’t wait to read Sam and Megan’s story all over again.
Good story! Skelly writes great characters and fun stories. This is light for a paranormal book about werewolves. It doesn’t have dark themes, except for the antagonists that come in mid-story. (It’s an unusual way to build a plot, but it worked for me.)
If it was marketed to adults, it would be 4⭐️, but it’s way too sexy for YA, and even some adults might be uncomfortable with the several intense kissing scenes. (There are also a few crude references to sex.) The intensity is mainly lots and lots of steamy desire. Hand placement is mentioned, but Skelly keeps hands off of body parts that should remain off limits until after marriage.
Sad, because there are some valuable lessons wrapped up in this story. The author clearly values marriage, including waiting for marriage to enjoy sexual activity, including the touching mentioned above. Things get heated, but restraint is exercised and several cold showers are taken.🤭
And I strongly agreed with an older and wiser character’s instruction that love is a choice—you choose to love your spouse no matter how hard it is. The feelings won’t always be there, but you wake up each morning and choose to love the person you vowed to love ‘til death do you part.💜
AJSkelly is phenomenal at world building! THIS is the world in which I’m sure all werewolves live. I love the well developed characters and the high level of action and tension kept me turning the pages! I would recommend this spicy-clean book to those in upper high school and beyond who love an intriguing shifter romance. I hope there are subsequent novels as I would certainly look forward to again visiting the Wolves of Rock Falls!
First Shift isn’t quite like any other book I’ve read, which in itself is a welcome treat. The story revolves around the two main characters and those in their families, both blood and otherwise, and it is a wonderful story of love, loyalty, and of learning how to make difficult choices. Skelly’s characters feel so real, like friends I’ve known for years. I found myself fully invested in their lives and in the intricately woven web of a small town Wolf pack. I thoroughly enjoyed witnessing characters evolve and I cannot wait to hear more from the Wolves of Rock Falls.
What a fun read! A solid 4.5 stars from on this one. I love the premise; some great tropes with lots of slow burn (clean) romance and a fun (and realistic) take on wolf shifters. Great themes of found family, adventure and first loves.
The book ends on a mild cliffhanger while still resolving key plot items. Really looking forward to the next installment and spending more time with the pack.
YA PNR readers will find it a fabulously flirty read and should def add it to the TBR!
Werewolves and romance! Can it get any more fun than that? AJ Skelly quickly and deftly pulls the reader into the fascinating world of the wolf pack with her intriguing worldbuilding and storytelling. The concept of the wolf pack is so compelling and I loved how she depicted the strong bonds with each member of the pack. I enjoyed the interaction and development among the characters, particularly Sam and Megan. Both were very empathetic and relatable. Sam was strong and confident, without being arrogant, and yet not afraid to show his vulnerable side. Megan's part was a bit more complex, but I found that I sympathized with her and still ended up satisfied with the direction her character arc went. The chemistry between the couple was exciting and fun to watch. All in all, this was a fun romp! I do want to give a heads up. (*And a spoiler warning*) If you're looking for a clean read, I would still consider this story one. But the conversation between the characters got a little more suggestive and the kissing scenes were more involved than what I prefer personally. However, it was clear that the author had a line that she did not cross and I appreciated that she kept it within the boundaries of marriage.
This is a great first book from this author! Hooking me from the very first chapter I just could not put this down. The world building is incredible and Sam and Megan have such fantastic chemistry. The storyline is Action packed and there’s mystery, suspense, conflict, family and clean romance and it’s highly addictive! I look forward to more from this author!
First, I want to thank AJ for giving me the opportunity to receive an ARC of First Shift and all opinions are my own...now on to the review and holy heck was this a ride. If you like Twilight then you will probably like this. I would say it is geared more towards the PG-13 grouping (the characters are in high school); we don't get those detailed sex scenes, but there is some solid kissing scenes and sex is brought up in conversation and mentioned often in the book as well as some fighting (there are wolves after all).
First Shift does start out a bit on the slow side for my liking when it comes to shifter books, but I am actually happy it did. The first half of the book focused ENTIRELY on the many "first shifts" that Megan had. AJ took so much time building a foundation for the story so that readers really get a good look on the process that Megan had to go through to become a werewolf. As a reader, I really appreciated how much detail was given. The story didn't jump from :one minute I am a normal girl to next a fully functioning werewolf". Megan hard core struggled with every aspect of it. Those initial shifts did not go smoothly and there was real emotions coming from it. I also really liked the out of the box "biting" of Megan. Going into the book, I was anticipating it was going to be a make out session gone wrong (since ya know, teenagers), but nope--and the change happened so fast too (faster than any other book I have read). Don't get me wrong, there is only so much creativity a writer can get with transitions, bites, etc. but for me personally and with what I have read, AJ put a lot of things that were new for me in this book (i.e. why they got married).
Then comes the second half of the book. And honestly what made me not want to put it down. Basically after the movie theater scene just buckle down with some snacks and a drink and get cozy because you are not going to want to set it down. AJ picks up speed and Megan and Sam are finally getting into a rhythm of acting as a couple. Even though you pretty much know what Megan's choice will be in the end, you are still on edge waiting to see how and when her decision will be made. The dangers come out of left field. One day everything is going smoothly and then the next people are trying to kill and kidnap each other. The ending does have me intrigued enough that I will be picking up the second book just to see how this plays out. It doesn't end on a terrible cliff hanger, but you will want to know how it plays out I am sure.
Side commet: I have gotta say, "Love is a choice" is my new favorite thing
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review from the author, AJ Skelly, herself. Thank you so much for this opportunity! I enjoyed reading this and can’t wait to read more of this series!
I’m having a bit of a love-hate relationship with this one. I truly wanted to love it, but I didn’t. However, I did enjoy reading this one. I don’t regret having read this, and I totally want to continue the series. I want to know what will happen next!
This book is about werewolves if you couldn’t already tell by its cover. And I’ll say, I’ve read a few stories around the idea of werewolves, and I found this one to be truly unique. While also it’s this premise that starts my love-hate relationship. The beginning felt a bit dragged out, and slightly repetitive. In the entire first half of the book, we see Megan learning what it means to be a wolf and being a part of the pack. It wasn’t until just after the halfway point did we start moving forward in the plot again. I would have liked to see the plot move a bit faster.
I also enjoyed the way the book was set up in a matter of whose point of view we got to see. We got to see both of our main characters’ viewpoints. Shifting (no pun intended) between the two characters from chapter to chapter. I really loved this as we got to see the thoughts and feelings of both. It was easy to fall in love with Sam, he was so considerate of Megan.
And that leads me to Megan. Who I can’t decide if I like or not. Honestly, I found her a bit whiny and such a “damsel in distress” type of character. Which at the beginning I was more or so okay with given the events that happened to her, but even well into the book, she was still like this. I just wish she was more of a stronger lead or would have at least grown into one.
Now for my main annoyance? I guess you could call it that. The best way I can describe this book is by being a PG-13. Have you seen the movie “Isn’t It Romantic?”, if you have then you might know exactly what I mean. If you haven’t, let me explain. In that movie, the main character gets sucked into a version of her life as if it were a movie that’s been rated PG-13. And in this movie when the main character tried to have sex with her love interest, it just skipped immediately to the next scene. That’s basically how this book was. We didn’t see any of these intimate scenes. I felt like the character in the movie when she realizes what just happened. I’m sure I had a very similar facial expression. This was definitely a choice. And I don’t fully agree with it.
Now I know it sounds like I didn’t enjoy this book. But I genuinely did, to an extent. I also would love to read more from this series, as I’m left with some unanswered questions that I hope the sequel will answer. Just as you can see, there were some writing choices that I didn’t particularly agree with. However, I think if you enjoy Paranormal Romances especially with werewolves, I definitely recommend picking this one up!
As someone who usually does not enjoy YA or werewolf books I was pleasantly surprised with First Shift!
Sam and Megan may be teenagers but the definitely weren’t the obnoxious immature type I’ve come to associate with a lot of YA. They’re thrust right into the thick of things as soon as the book begins and have to deal with life altering issues all in a very short span of time. Couple that with mate bonds and teenage hormones and it gives you just enough spice to be satisfied without getting too graphic. I was also relieved that I didn’t have have to suffer through another overbearing “alpha” type. All of these characters felt real without being overly exaggerated and it was honestly a breath of fresh air!
The first story arc is well done and it sets it up perfectly to move on to the next book, which I can’t wait to read!

A.J. Skelly delivers all the paranormal romance in this action-packed first installment of The Wolves of Rock Falls series!
High school romance is bad enough without all the complications involved with initiation into a secret werewolf world. But Sam is strong, sweet and swoony, Meg is brave, relatable and mature, and their teen romance is awkward and adorable, propelling them to an exciting ending! I love when books end up fulfilling what their package says, and this one fits perfectly in the genre! With great secondary characters and a refreshing emphasis on the importance of family and honor, First Shift will be just right for readers looking for clean (ie. heavy romantic tension without sex on the page or PG-13) paranormal romance. For fans of Maggie Stiefvater's The Wolves of Mercy Falls series, Cynthia Hand's Unearthly series, and all of us who wanted a fully fleshed story for Jacob Black. You know who you are.
*I received an advanced copy of the book from the author but I am solely responsible for my opinions.*
I was fortunate to receive an ARC of this book from the author. I have read a lot of paranormal romances, and among all of them vampire or werewolf romances are my favorites! To sum up this book in a few words I’d say it’s Twilight with Jacob and bella as main characters! The writing is buttery smooth, character building top notch. Megan’s transformation scenes were amazing! And the romance between Sam and Megan is one of the best I’ve read! *Spoiler* Megan and Sam had unbelievable chemistry throughout the book! I’m glad that in the end Megan chooses to be with Sam and they become a mated pair. I finished this book in one sitting and couldn’t put it down. I’d highly recommend it to all the werewolf fans out there! Hungrily looking forward to the next installment. My heartfelt thanks to the author AJ Skelly for sending me the ARC of this book.

First Shift is written from the perspectives of the two main characters, Sam & Megan. Sam is a werewolf who accidentally "bites" Megan revealing his world to her.
I've never read a werewolf book quite like this. I loved the concept and the characters. I loved the growth between Sam and Megan, but I have to say that communication is a good thing. In the last several books I've read, if the characters would just sit down and talk, things would make way more sense.
This was a 5 star book in my mind until it got to the main battle, but the aftermath of that left me with too many questions.
I am, however, looking forward to seeing what happens next for these characters.
*i was given this book in exchange for an honest review* I was fully immersed in this story. The idea of being accidentally bitten by a werewolf was such an intriguing idea I was immediately drawn in. There was so much mystery and intensity to this book that I finished it ASAP because I had to know what was going to happen. The frustration and anger that Meghan felt towards Sam quickly fueled the fire for the amazing passion that AK Skelly wrote into this book. The guilt and patience that Sam exhibits while helping Meghan through the odd circumstances they find themselves in were so clearly written. I loved the chemistry between Meghan and Sam. Their characters were so believable for their ages that I felt like I was back in high school with them. I definitely cannot wait to read the next book!
First Shift is now in my top ten books of quarantine. Megan and Sam were doing that dance of does he like me/does she like me, y'know that awkward phase when you like someone but aren't sure if they like you back. While things were further complicated by Sam accidentally turns her. Poor guy, he just couldn't catch a break. So, follow along to see what happens before the next full moon. Will she stay with the pack? Will she fall in love with Sam? I guess you'll have to read the book to find out.

This book had me hooked from the first chapter. I loved the chemistry between Sam and Megan and diving into the hierarchy and rules of this werewolf pack was very interesting. The mystery and suspense was also a very nice touch. For a debut novel, this definitely got me excited for more works from this author.
I want to thank the author for the advanced copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review. Really excited to read more!
Want to know why I loved “First Shift”? 1. Dreamy teenage werewolf (no brooding, angst, or climbing into the bedrooms of teenage girls here folks!) 2. Sassy and spunky female protagonist (Bella who?) 3. A YA romance as it was meant to be - consensual, adorable, swoon worthy, did I mention consensual? Seriously. Buy the book. Best paranormal YA novel I’ve read in a long time.
*I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher.*
When it comes to vampires and werewolves, I'm typically a vampire kinda gal, but I'll make an exception this time. ;)
The world building in this book is great. I found myself getting attached to Sam and Meg. The characters are very relatable and definitely act their age (in a good way). It's part of what makes them easy to connect with. I was hooked on the journey from beginning to end.
I for one am excited to see what's to come, and am glad I checked this out. If you're into werewolves you definitely should put this on the tbr! This book will also be great for people that are fans of Twilight, but wanted more wolves. ;)
A well paced story is like a roller coaster. The build up is the climb to the first drop. The story's dilemma that initial fall. The aha moment the loop. The climax the jerking corkscrews thereafter. With FIRST SHIFT it was all loops and corkscrews. This story hit the ground running and never lost momentum. I devoured the book in one night.
Thank you to the author for an advanced copy of this book. I really enjoyed the story and the characters. Sam seems like the sweetest guy ever and I liked how you felt Megan's emotional journey in becoming a werewolf and the decision to stay in skin or fur. I really hope this is a series, given the way it ended there is a potential for more.
I know what you're thinking...ANOTHER werewolf series? But hang tight because A.J. Skelly really brought a new take to this world that I have not seen done before. This book starts out fast and at first, I really wasn't sure if it was going to be my thing-I thought it was going to be a happily ever after way too quickly...or is it? This book was action packed. You get it all-you get the romance with Sam and Megan, you get to watch the politics of the pack unfold with Sam being the beta, and throw in some high-school activities, what more could you possibly want?
Also can we give an AMEN to the fact that Megan was NOT your typical female character in these paranormal stories who just wildly accepted these new norms? I feel like that was a breath of fresh air. Skelly really delivered in the plot and character development and look forward to reading more.
The author’s style immediately pulled me in, and the story’s resolution didn’t disappoint. The romance was sweet and authentic. Loved watching their friendship and commitment grow together. Loved that it was a healthy relationship. First Shift is filled with suspense and great character development, making it a delightful read from beginning to end. Can’t wait for the next one! I’ll be rereading this the weeks before, it’s that good!
