Ideas without tactics are useless! That's why I wrote this book.
The main reason I wrote this book is that all the other books on public speaking and communication that are out there don't give you any physical tactics you can practice. They try to teach you how to be a motivational speaker or are really just self-help books wrapped up in the idea of effective communication. They all say things
“…connect with your audience…”“…speak with passion…”“…get your idea across simply…”“…tell a story to personalize it…”“…face your fear…”But they never tell you how!!! They never give you practical tactics or physical tactics to practice so you can actually achieve these goals. At best you'll get some personal anecdote that probably doesn't apply to your day-to-day.
Guess what, everyone? 99 out of 100 times you're not giving a TED Talk or an impassioned keynote. You're giving a regional market report, or a training session, or you're in a sales meeting, giving an account update. What does any of that have to do with something like finding your passion? The answer is nothing, and that is why it is just an idea. Something you read, agree with and then move on from without any actual improvement in your communication.
That's why I wrote this book. No fluff, no long-winded explanations, no self-help. Just practical advice that you can start applying right away. Physical tactics that you can start using immediately to communicate confidence. Literal sentences you can complete to help you get your ideas across simply and much more effectively.
Here's what I can promise you in this
Ideas based on science and research, using neuroscience, poker analysis, police interrogation techniques, evolutionary biology, as well as improv, stand-up comedy and acting.Practical examples from a variety of professional fields. You will see case studies from teaching, corporate sales, fitness classes, nursing and much more.Beyond examples, I will give you actual exercises that you can practice and physical tactics that you can use to create new muscle memory in both how you speak and how you look when speaking.By reading this book you're not just learning from me. You're learning from professional wrestlers, poker players, police interrogators and neuroscientists. In other words you're learning from people who actually communicate effectively in their day-to-day lives.
I have taught over a 100,000 people my techniques and helped them all to be better communicators.
I believe that being an effective communicator, being charismatic, being an impactful speaker is just a series of physical actions you can learn in the same way you learn how to kick a through physical practice and repetition. How do I know? Because that's exactly how I did it. I didn't start off being an awesome speaker. I learned it, and so can you. I want to change the world! I want people to look forward to meetings and speeches. I want people to leave a presentation actually having learned something. I want to END BORING.

I was interested in this book to potentially acquire new suggestions for making my lectures more interesting. Having once taken a Dale Carnegie course and studying Communications, I already had a foundation to build upon. Therefore, I may not have learned as much as might another person. I did not disagree with the material and found that I did pick up new ideas., particularly about video presentations and methods of holding audience interest. I also found the suggestions for engaging a room to be useful.
The author recommends that the book be used as a reference, focusing first on most relevant topics. Because I read the book for the purpose of reviewing it, I caution a person reading this review to consider that other people may find it more useful than did I. There were also links to a website with video support for the concepts that would be helpful for people focused on particular aspects of the material.
I do recommend this book to improve upon, and become more comfortable with, public speaking. Use it more as a reference than a quick read and practice the suggestions provided.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
How many times have you seen people struggling to keep themselves awake when you're presenting? Ivan gives some really cool and simple tricks to make your presentation interesting and tell a story so the listeners are actively participating and going through it with you. I'm definitely going to refer this book time and again with these tactics and I've already started practicing a few of these. Must read for everyone who likes communicating with others.
This is a very engaging book on public speaking and communication. The tips are practical and can be used immediately. After reading the book, it gave me a renewed sense of confidence. I can't wait for my next presentation!
Ivan is truly an engaging public speaker. I would highly recommend you to check out his courses in Coursera and Udemy. They are absolutely life changing!
Without a doubt, this book was just as engaging as the author is in person. Full with tips and tricks to keep your audiences ( physical or virtual) engaged and ready to learn.
Ivan is a great speaker but more importantly there are a ton of practical and usable micro chunks of advice in the book that should help anyone who ever has to speak with one or more humans (aka all of us).
Great reading with practical tips on how to communicate better - you can almost hear Ivan talking to you and challenging the audience to end boring #endboring
