Anna Smith

Anna Smith is an award-winning journalist who spent a lifetime in daily newspapers, reporting from the frontline all over the world. She has covered conflicts from Somalia to Rwanda to Kosovo, where she witnessed the plight of tragic refugees, genocide and hideous ethnic cleansing. She has also worked on major investigations, unmasking drug dealers and paedophiles, as well as reporting on the Dunblane Massacre, to 9/11, where she was one of the first journalists on the scene in both world shaking events.

She writes novels full time now, using her vast experience as a journalist to create the hugely popular Rosie Gilmour character, a gritty Glasgow journalist who tears down the walls of corruption and will stop at nothing to get her story. Anna lives between her homes in Scotland and the West of Ireland - and also in Spain to escape the British weather.

Her highly acclaimed debut novel, The Dead Won't Sleep, was the first in the series, exposing corruption and child abuse at the very top of the establishment, echoing real news stories that are being reported at the moment, even though the novel was published three years ago.

The second in the series is, To Tell The Truth, and takes Rosie on a terrifying investigation into the kidnapping of a three-year-old girl from a beach in Spain while on holiday with her parents. It's a fast paced story of people trafficking and
international child porn, and is set in Glasgow, Spain and Morocco.

Book three, is Screams In The Dark, is a harrowing tale of refugees going missing in Glasgow. When a torso is found floating in the River Clyde, Rosie is on the trail of international criminals from London to Belgrade and uncovers a network of evil. It's a story close to Anna's heart as she reported from Kosovo at the start of the war when stricken refugees were spilling across the border in their thousands.

Her fourth in the series, is Betrayed, where Rosie takes on the criminals in the Ulster Volunteer Force in Glasgow. It's a gripping story of cocaine smuggling, of divided loyalties, of love and regret, and ultimately of betrayal.

Her latest novel, A Cold Killing, takes Rosie on the dangerous trail of gun runners as she probes the murder of a retired Glasgow University lecturer. The deeper she digs, she finds that he has a dark past that leads all the way to MI6 and the KGB.

Trapped is the fourth and final instalment in the Kerry Casey series, and a gritty, scintillating and quickfire conclusion to the saga. The prologue opens with Billy Dobson of the sinister Ulster Volunteer Force, a group of fixers who are willing to carry out pretty much anything from framing an innocent party to planting bombs and brutal murder provided the price is right. He knows how to keep his mouth shut which is the reason he's been chosen for this assignment. After the task had been completed he will receive £15,000 and swiftly leave the country. Earlier that evening he had executed two men by gunshot to the head execution style; he was never told very much about the targets but apparently, these guys got greedy. Then he’d driven their car, the bodies slumped in the back seat, to a country road on the outskirts of Milngavie. He parked it well out of the way in a lay-by close to a dirt track road, and waited. It involved a woman who’d be driving down the same road within twenty minutes. He’d assumed he had to put a bullet in her too, but that wasn’t the deal here. This was different. He waited at the roadside. He’d been told she’d left the place and was on her way down. But that she wasn’t alone. His mobile pinged. They were only three minutes away. He got ready. He got out of the car and onto the roadside, when he saw the lights from the approaching car at the turn of the bend. He staggered and waved his hands urgently, as though he was injured and in need of help. The car slowed down and pulled in to the side of the road, hazards flashing. In seconds, as planned, his men came from the bushes, three of them, guns blazing. Then the car doors opened.

An older guy climbed out of the car, hands raised. Rab Downey and Davey McKay had been picked for the job and the pair of them pulled the bodies of Thomas Lumsden and Peter Hawkins out of the black BMW and dragged them over to the woman’s car, wedging them into the back seat. Then they went back to the BMW and lugged over two holdalls – which he knew contained cocaine and sub-machine guns. Then as the woman stood horrified, they planted them in the boot of her car. Dobson then made a call to inform his superiors that the job was done and hurriedly drove away. The police arrive at the scene and promptly place Kerry and her Uncle Daniel ”Danny” McGregor in handcuffs; they escort Kerry, who is 6 months pregnant, to Corton Vale Women's Prison where she would spend her first night sharing a cell with oddball Nat. Casey had now taken the reigns of one of Glasgow's most notorious gangs after the previous boss, her father, died. Both Kerry and Danny are remanded in custody awaiting trial while her lawyer, Marty Kane, tries to get her out. They begin tracking down the men who carried this out. But who has framed her for these horrific crimes and why, and can she prove her innocence? This is a riveting and compulsively readable gangland thriller with plenty of grittiness and enough twists, drama and mystery to keep you reading long into the night. Not only has crime boss Kasey got to deal with her wrongful incarceration but she also discovers that her beau, cop Vinny Burns, who has been on an undercover assignment in Marbella, Spain and happens to be the father of her unborn baby, has been kidnapped. It's fast-paced, well written and chock full of suspense and tension. A must-read. Highly recommended.

Book 4 in the Kerry Casey series. An ok read, I didn’t find it as gripping as others in the series as there wasn’t an awful lot of a story to it.

Thank you to NetGalley and Quercus for the arc of this book in exchange for an honest review

“Trapped” by Anna Smith (2021)

Overall Rating 5/10 – Fizzled Away

Plot
Our protagonist, Kerry Casey finds herself locked up, having been framed for a serious crime she did not commit. Can she, and the Casey crew, work out who did it and persuade the authorities to release her?

Writing Style
Easy, flowing, short sentences. Modern, up-to-date. No excess adjectives or verbage. Pretty much ideal.

Point of View/Voice
Written in the 3rd Person / Past Tense (standard convention)

Critique
Oh dear. Sadly, it all seems to have gone awry in the last of this series of four novels.

Having apparently got past the misandry that polluted first two, the last has plunged into a sea of trouble. It seemed fairly clear early on that the authoress had a particular “thing” about pregnancy. It was also fairly clear that the authoress was playing out either personal experience or a fantasy experience. In either case, we (the readers) can always allow a certain indulgence of any author. However, as much as that may be the case, in the fourth and final instalment the experience becomes an obsession and hopelessly overwhelms the storyline (which has been excellent throughout). It took us to places that had no business being in the plot and, just in case we weren’t grasping it, took us there again and again and again … it fact, we were swallowed within a belly full of personal obsession. Sad tidings for a climax of great writing.

Unfortunately, it didn’t stop there. We were treated to multiple storylines that all knit into one (a common proposition within the world of writing) but in this case, the timeline(s) didn’t match and were significantly out. One line happened over a few days where another happened over “weeks and weeks” – then they came together. Oooops.

That wasn’t the end of I though. The storylines have been quite brilliant with one act of clumsiness in the preceding novel. In this, the main component (how do the Caseys prove they were framed) was written very poorly and, frankly, would have pretty much ruined the book had it not already been cast upon oblivion by the author’s obsession with pregnancy.

And, as is so often the case, the close of the book (which brings everything to order for the reader) was obviously rushed and clumsy.

So sorry Mrs Smith, this one didn’t do it for me.

I am glad the series has now ended but I will miss Kerry Casey x

I'm always happy when I have a new Kerry Casey instalment on my TBR pile and this one is a belter! One piece of advice, only pick #Trapped up if you have time to read as it's a proper page turner. I managed to read this in one day stopping only to slice and dice the bits for tea (wanted to make sure I kept all my fingers). This is number four in the Kerry Casey gang bosses life within the Glasgow criminal underworld

We have two stories unfolding within these pages one being that someone integral to Kerry's future happiness is missing in Spain while working undercover. Then we have Kerry six months pregnant in Cornton Vale womens prison both her and her Uncle Danny have ended up on remand awaiting trial and it involves some pretty serious charges. Without giving too much away they've actually been set up and are completely innocent but by who and exactly how you'll have to read the book.

On her first night banged up Kerry meets Nat, a young lass who hasn't had the best of starts in life but who takes Kerry under her wing, telling her the rules, who's ok and who to avoid. I enjoyed the relationship with these two women, having someone to have her in a place like Cornton Vale is a godsend. By the time she is up for release she is in a better place and when Kerry makes a suggestion Nat agrees and so begins a new chapter for her.

There's a plethora of characters in #Trapped some we love and some we loath with the story being told from more than one point of view it keeps the pace going at a steady gallop from start to finish. The book is so full of surprises, twists and revelations that you simply cannot help but read just one more chapter.

I'm a big advocate of reading a series in the correct order, it's the background details on the characters, all their wee foibles and habits, loves and losses. I always think it helps us understand what makes them tick makes them at times seem more relateable. The Kerry Casey series in no different so give yourself the enjoyment of getting to know starting with Blood Feud.

Read for an honest review. Thank Ms Smith, #Netgalley and Quercus Publishers.

I absolutely thoroughly enjoyed.this story but then I always do when I read Anna’s books, my daughter who lives in Sweden and is 60 this June on 25th recommend that I should read the books. May I say it was one of the best things I have done because I am now 79 and was widowed 2 years ago on 22-05-2020 and I am disabled .I had always worked until I was 45 then sadly had an accident in work which forced me into retirement due to spinal injury’s. I had only jus got together with Gavin Scott two years before this and we both worked for the district councilParks and Recreation Department so this was a very severe blow to me . However Gavin and I got married and he retired early we had 34 glorious years together and kept active as much as possible but sadly he has gone from us and I am alone a lot because my family is scattered this is where Anna Smith became an important part of my life. Her books are so wonderful they are thrilling and stimulating reading for both my daughter and myself and the fact that her stories are based in Glasgow makes them so much better. Thank you so much Anna you make my life so much better and I truly enjoy and look forward to reading all of your books. I cannot recommend them enough to readers and May you go on entertaining us with your stories for many years to come. I of course am-a Glaswegian one of the old school born in 1943 and could tell many stories myself from my upbringing in the tenements of Glasgow but love the city where I was born as does my family. Wishing you much more success and thank you so much for all your thrilling stories,
Sincerely Your’s ,

When crime boss, Kerry Casey and her Uncle Danny are waylaid on a quiet stretch of road, it can only mean trouble especially when Kerry and Danny are framed for a crime they didn't have anything to do with, but in this latest novel it would seem that old grudges run deep and pretty soon it becomes a race against time to see who can outwit the faster in order to get those who are targeting the Casey family.

As always this gritty crime series hits the ground running with two stories running concurrently both of which have particular relevance if you have followed the series from the beginning. Not only do we follow Kerry as she languishes, on remand, in a tough women's prison, but we also catch up with the mystery surrounding the disappearance of Kasey's boyfriend, Vinny Burns, an undercover police officer who has gone missing in Spain.

It is possible to read Trapped as a standalone story but as this is book four in the series, and quite possibly the last, there is a definite sense of tying up a few loose ends. As always the action is hard hitting and moves along at such a great pace that it's possible to lose complete track of time as you become immersed in the gritty world of gangland crime, a world which has terrible repercussions for those who get on the wrong side of each other. The author certainly knows how to keep the tension racked up to high and brings both place and people alive, even though, most of them aren't the sort of people you would like to meet there is a believability to them and you can't help but hope that Kerry Casey comes out on the winning side.

I have been desperate to read this book which is thelast of the 4 featuring Kerry Casey. If you haven't read the other three books this review may contain spoilers. At the end of book 3 we as readers knew that Kerry was questioning where her lover and undercover copper Vinny was. With that huge worry she also has to try and keep herself safe and well as she is pregnant. When her and her uncle Danny are travelling one night they are well and truly stitched up and watch as two men are murdered.   Before they know it, the police arrive and they are both arrested and before long the only thing that looks certain is a prison sentance.

I was literally on the edge of my seat with this final installment and it delivered by the bucketload. By the time I got to the last quarter of the book I was beside myself needing to fnd out what happens. The last quarter of the book was amazing and I am SO glad that the book wrapped up the way it did. I absolutely loved the Rosie Gilmour series and was devastated when it ended. Then I fell in love with Kerry Casey and her crew. However, this time I didn't feel AS devastated because I just know that Anna Smiths next book will no doubt be just as amazing. Anna Smith is an amazing author and one that I HIGHLY reccomend. If you haven't read her books before, start off at the beginning with her Rosie Gilmour Series, you wont regret it.

Kerry Casey, a gangland crime boss and her Uncle Danny are in prison for crimes they didn't commit. They have been framed and are found with cocaine, dead bodies and guns in their car by the police. Whilst they are inside, the Casey gang are hunting down the men who did this to them. Another story is also being told of Vinnie, Kerrys' partner who is missing.
This was an enjoyable read of a gangland crime novel. It had plenty of twists and was fast paced. The plot was well written and full of suspense. The story was told from different points of view and this allowed more traits of characters to come through making them likeable and interesting.
At the start I didn't know the characters as this part of a series. I would advise anyone wanting to read this book to start at the first one to get to know the characters. I will look out and read more books by Anna Smith.
Overall I found this was a well written, page turner, fast paced gangland crime story with plenty of twists and a good plot.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for this ARC.

A gripping gangland thriller sees heroine crime boss Kerry Casey in jail - for fans of Kimberley Chambers, Martina Cole and Jessie Keane

Kerry Casey is still reeling from the bombshell that her lover, undercover cop Vinny Burns, has gone missing in Spain. She's pregnant with his baby and will do anything to find him.

One night, driving along a country road, Kerry and her Uncle Danny are ambushed by gunmen. In the confusion that follows, shots are fired and two men are murdered. Kerry and Danny can only look on as the bodies are dragged from their assailant's car and placed in their own.

The police arrive in minutes. With cocaine, dead bodies and guns in the car, it looks like an open-and-shut case.

Kerry's been framed. She is forced to wait out her fate inside a women's prison, still not knowing what has happened to Vinnie. On the outside the Casey gang are hunting down the men who did this to her and they will stop at nothing to find them.

Anna Smith is a truly awesome writer, I have read and enjoyed each and every one of her book over the years, this is another first class read. Trapped is the 4th book to feature Kerry Casey.
What a joyride I was taken on throughout this book, If you like a gritty gangland, fast paced, thrilling book then this is for you.
This book, along with Anna's other books deserve way more than the 5 stars given, this book i would have no problems recommending to anyone who enjoys a gangland style read.

When Kerry and her uncle Danny are framed, set up for murder, she is left feeling hopeless in prison, wondering what has happened to her lover Vinny. Its down to the Casey's crew' to not only find out what has happened to Vinny while he's been working undercover in Spain, but to also find out the who and why's from the set up that landed Kerry and Danny in prison.
There is so much going on in this book that keeps you turning those pages, you really do end up hooked. I can't say too much without giving anything away, but what I will say if you are a fan of this author you really need to be reading this book, one of the best yet.

Anna Smith once again thrills us with the next instalment of her Kerry Casey series and it does not disappoint.
Kerry and her uncle Danny find themselves on remand for a crime they didn’t commit - it’s a setup but who set them up and why ?
At the same time her boyfriend and father of her unborn child goes missing while working undercover in Spain - who has him or is he dead ?
No spoilers so that’s all I’m going to say about the storyline but of course the content is so much more - it’s gangsters who don’t always play by the same rules as we do and if that’s your genre then put your feet up for the day and enjoy the ride because once you start you won’t be able to put it down.
Fantastic read thank you Anna xx

Kerry Casey and the gang are back with another offering to her well established series and as usual it doesn't disappoint.

Kerry and her Uncle Danny are ambushed and framed for a crime that they didn't commit and are sent to prison to await trail so it's left to the remaining Casey gang to unearth the truth and bring home their heavily pregnant boss.

Meanwhile on the Costa Jake & Sully are tasked with locating a kidnapped Vinny (Kerry's partner) after an undercover police surveillance and bring him home but not without risk.

There is just so much going on in this gangland drama an intense gritty read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story! I didn't realize it was book 4/4 and haven't read the first 3 books. However, I still understood what was going on.
The book follows Kerry, a business women, who's business didn't have the most legitimate start-up. Kerry and her uncle are incarcerated for a crime they did not commit. While inside, Kerrys legal team is working hard to free her and also find her missing boyfriend.
This story is full of twists and turns and will not leave you bored. Highly recommend!

This is a great gangland book and starts with crime boss Kerry Casey and her uncle Danny being ambushed and framed. They've been set up and are now in prison. They haven't a clue what's gone on and why?

It's good to catch up with Kerry and see what her life has and is doing. The book has plenty of twists and turns leaving us readers gasping at times.
A brilliant book and one that I highly recommend.

For me this is the book of the year. I love reading Anna’s books and couldn’t wait to start this one. Finished it in two days (working full time 😇)
The main character Kerry Casey is a crime boss by default. Please read the previous books on this series first. At the start of the book Kerry I’d pregnant and set up for two murders abs sent to Cortonvale on remand.
The book centres around the race to prove her innocence before the birth and the disappearance of her baby daddy in Spain, together with daily life in a women’s prison where she meets many unfortunate ladies.
Highly recommend this and all of Annna’s books.
Can’t wait for the next one xx

Although it started strong it took me a while to get into, as books about gangsters aren't really my thing. I did persevere and found it enjoyable. Even though the Caseys were known as criminals, Kerry was trying to turn things around. She and her 'gang' were helpful/kind to a lot of people and it was good to see the real baddies get their comeuppance. Always love a happy ending.

I enjoyed this book about Kerry Casey and her gang. The pacing was excellent, and the action kept me engaged throughout. I especially liked how the two storylines unfolded simultaneously: one focused on proving Kerry's innocence and the other on her search for her partner and the missing father of her unborn baby. Both plots were interesting and kept me hooked.
