Kylie Tate #1

Malevolent

Rate this book
From bestselling author Anne L. Parks comes both a chilling thriller and moving love story.

Kylie Tate survived a life of dominance and abuse. An up-and-coming criminal defense attorney, she has been assigned to a first degree murder case which could make or break her career. The downside—the second chair is fellow attorney and violent ex-boyfriend, John Sysco.

When she catches the eye of enigmatic billionaire, Alex Stone, she can’t help but be drawn to him. Unfortunately John is not willing to let her go—especially into the arms of another man.

As John’s sanity spirals into darkness, his attempts to get Kylie back escalate, along with the abuse she thought she had escaped. The one glimmer of hope she has is the unconditional support Alex provides. Ravaged by demons from his past, Alex vows to stop at nothing to keep Kylie safe.

But the closer the couple gets, the more Kylie wonders if Alex is truly her savior—or as dark and dangerous as John.

Married to the Navy – well a Commander in the Navy – Parks has lived in various locales throughout the United States. She currently resides in the Washington D.C area. Omg!!!!
What on earth did I just read and where has this author been hiding?
Talk about finding a hidden gem!
I am utterly speechless and actually sitting here trying to come up with words and that never happens!
Both plot and characters ensared my heart, from cover to cover, and refused to let go even after the very last page.
I'm actually going to leave this here and encourage you to go in blind as wow what a journey and what an ending. Eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.

I’m normally shying away from books with billionaires in them. I OD’ed on them when they got really popular a few years back and ever since… However, on the firm suggestion (Read: Strong armed) of a book BFF I decided to take a chance on Anne L. Parks’ Malevolent to see if she was right. And she was!

I really liked Kylie Tate. Strong, intelligent, she is no one’s fool. Alex Stone I also enjoyed although there were moments that I did find a bit irksome. They both have issues and while I find Kylie was dealing with hers, not so much with Alex. I get his underlining issues, but sometimes his actions didn’t sit well with me.

That aside I found the story to be very well paced with the right amount of backstory provided at just the right time. John Sysco is the perfect antagonist that you love to hate. Plenty of heart pounding suspense mixed in with great personal moments. And can I just add, all the trial build-up as well as the execution of court drama I found completely fascinating! It’s all going along great and I am sucked into the story. Then WHAM! Cliffhanger. O.o It’s good thing I already have the next book loaded up and ready to go because I don’t think I could sit around patiently and wait for months to find out what happens next.

Stars: 4
I received this book from the author through SBR. I was not compensated for the book other than the entertainment it provided. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Stephannie's 5-star review:

Kylie Tate is a successful women lawyer; she even has a top-floor office. But like most women, she has dealt with abuse and survived. Since her last boyfriend was a crazy psycho who enjoyed abusing her; she has been more focused on her career and staying away from men.

Alex Stone is a billionaire playboy in the publics' eyes, but everything isn't always like it seems. Kylie assists Alex when he needs aid on the side of the road and he wants to get to know her.

Both Kylie and Alex have trust issues. Alex needs to address his lack of trust issues and Kylie is trying hard to work on her issues but with a stalker threatening Kylie. She can't trust as much as she wants to.

This is the first book in the series. I really enjoyed reading this book. I loved and sympathized with everything she was going through. She is a strong woman which I love about her. She is scared but not running away. She has a big trial to prepare for and this stalker is messing with her instincts and making her question who she can trust or believe. She is a nervous wreck trying to stay strong and fight back and keep everything in her life from falling apart.

With a cliffhanger at the end, I am looking forward to the next book in this series. I am so glad I can pick up book two right away. I am loving this series and I am hooked to see how it all ends up. One-click this one today if you love a good romance thriller!

*I was a beta reader for this book, but am providing my honest opinion.

It's been a REALLY long time since I've picked up a Thriller Romance novel. Why? Because I've spent most of my reading time enjoying other genres. When I was asked to beta this novel, I honestly didn't know what to expect. Needless to say, I've fallen in love with everything about it.

Kylie Tate is a defense attorney. Let's face it, it takes a special kind of person to be an attorney. Especially one that has to defend someone's life (whether they're innocent or not). But as if her cases weren't difficult enough, her ex boyfriend (also co-worker) is a piece of work. Not only was he a crappy boyfriend, but he's an even crappier ex. So much so that she's ruled out dating anyone else for the foreseeable future. That is, until she literally runs in to the hottest billionaire bachelor out there, Alex Stone.

Alex is, yes you guessed it, the billionaire bachelor that every living woman wants a chance with. Being used to THAT attention, he's not quite sure what to make of Kylie when she helps him with some car issues. Did she NOT know who he was or did she honestly just not care? I guess there was only one way to find out, right? But finding out meant getting to know her and he wasn't prepared for it. Not only because she's the most honest woman he's met in a long time, but because she's in danger and keeping her safe has become a necessity for him.

THIS BOOK IS AMAZING!!!! Literally. It has everything you look for in a book. The way this author builds her characters makes you feel as though you're part of the story and living their lives with them. Then you get to not only experience the fear within the thriller, but all of the intricacies that go along with a murder trial. How awesome is that?!!!!

Full disclosure...is there a cliffhanger? Yes. And OMG what a cliffhanger it is. I'm already trying to get my hands on the next one. I NEED MORE ALEX STONE!!!!!!!!!!

This book opens with Kylie Tate on her morning run, she has a feeling she's being watched but is then distracted by a very expensive car at the side of the road with an irritated man trying to get his cell phone to work. She offers her help and arranges a tow truck from her mechanic, and letting him use her phone to call for a ride. She gets really annoyed with him when he offers her money for her help. Although the encounter may just spark some interesting dreams.

We then meet this man she helped when he shows up with her boss. Kylie is a well known criminal defense attorney and apparently one of their top clients, Alex Stone, needs her help for his nephew.

Now Kylie and one of the other attorneys at the firm once had a relationship, one that was extremely mentally and physically abusive. She did finally get away from John Sysco's control, but his threats to her career remain foremost in her mind.

When she accepts a date from Alex Stone, John decides he wants her back. Stalking her, inflicting property damage and accosting her in semipublic places. It's Alex that comes to her rescue and although she refuses to report it begins some protection for her. He has his own security act as body guards for her.

As she begins work on a murder case, threats come in and Alex starts becoming a bit overprotective and controlling. There is plenty of romancing in this even as things escalate with regard to John.

A lively journey to balance career and relationship as the attraction begins to sizzle. A bit of a cliff-hanger but the next book is only a few weeks away. I can't wait!

Malevolent
(Kylie Tate #1)
Written by: Anne L. Parks

Kylie Tate is the first woman to make it to the top floor offices at her law firm. She is also an abuse survivor. She is also getting ready for a big trial. What she doesn’t have time for is a man in her life, but after meeting Alex Stone on the street she might just be willing to include him in her life.

Alex Stone is a billionaire playboy, at least that is how he is portrayed, and often how a person is portrayed isn’t who they really are. Alex wants to get to know Kylie and wants her to see there is another side to him.

As Kylie and Alex begin to spend more and more time together they find out that each one of them has trust issues. Kylie is working her way through hers and Alex need to face his, but with a stalker threatening Kylie and the trial to prepare, their differences start to throw up little roadblocks.

I found this book full of suspense and tension. Having a reader’s eye view into Kylie’s preparation for the upcoming trial was quiet interesting. Add into that the stalker who is hell bent on harming Kylie, one is never sure if her instincts are right or it if is nerves.

With a cliffhanger at the end I am looking forward to Kylie and Alex’s part 2.

I'm not the type of girl who jumps up & down in excitement (unless my Denver Broncos win the Super Bowl), nor am I the hugging type. That being said, if I were to ever meet the brilliant Anne L. Parks, I do believe you would hear me squeal like a girl as I jump up & down because WHERE HAS SHE BEEN MY WHOLE LIFE LOL?! Kylie Tate is a strong woman who has survived quite a bit but she didn't let it define her. She's an up & coming defense attorney who has been assigned a huge case, but she also has to work with her violent ex, John. I would have seriously hurt him big time if that were me. During all of this, John is losing his mind as he's doing whatever it takes to get Kylie back, and things are starting to get really dangerous. Throughout this situation Kylie meets Alex, and her future is looking up, or is it?! This story was super exciting with all kinds of twists coming in hot so I was on the edge of my seat the whole time with heart racing. The diabolical genius of Anne L. Parks is top notch, and she's on the list of authors that I cannot live without so you want to hit those one click buttons! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Malevolent was such an amazing and engaging story. This trilogy revolves around Kylie Tate. She is a powerful criminal defense attorney who is the first woman to move up to the penthouse office in her law firm.
Kylie has managed to mostly move on after her ex-boyfriend rained dominance and abuse onto her during their relationship. She thought she was free from him. Unfortunately, he works in the same law firm and now he is sitting second chair during the murder trial she is defending.
One day, she meets Alex Stone, a billionaire playboy. They are complete opposites but still very attracted to each other with some intense chemistry. Her ex, John Sysco will not sit by and watch a relationship develop. When John's efforts get more focused and intense, Alex's protective instincts kick in.
I love books so much that pull me in and refuse to let go and especially well crafted plots that keep me guessing and are unpredictable. I can’t wait to dive into the next two books!

This is the first book I have read by Anne. I really enjoyed it. However, I was torn about the relationship between Kylie and Alex. Sometimes the way he treated her or did things rub me the wrong way. Kylie goes through so much during this book. She just got out of an abusive relationship with a coworker. He doesn’t want to let her go. If he can’t have her than no one can. Alex is a billionaire. He takes notice of Kylie and is drawn to her. He feels for her what he has never felt before. However, he has his own issues that he has never really worked through. They affect his relationship with Kylie even if he doesn’t think they do. This book drew me in but at the same time was on the slow side at times. I enjoyed this book. I didn’t realize it was a series when I decided to read it. This book does end on a cliff hanger. I am not sure if I will read the next one in the series at this time. Great job Anne.

Kylie is a successful, brilliant, and accomplished lawyer. She worked her tail to display her prowess and to gain a corner office in the penthouse of the law office that she works for. He future is looking bright. She is single, and not looking. Her last relationship put her off of dating for the time being. But she is ok with that. She has her two best friends/ex-roommates and her career, and she is happy with that.

Alex is a successful self-made billionaire. He is a one hit wonder when it comes to women. He literally doesn't stay around for there to be anything serious with women. He can't even remember their names after all is said and done. But in his life, he has been shown, that women don't want anything but to have a piece of him in any way that they can, and his feelings and needs don't matter anyway.

I enjoyed the book a lot. But cliffhanger. Wow. On to read the next. So worth going to the next because I want to know what will happen next.

This is the 1st in a new series and what a thrilling storyline this is! Kylie is a survivor of an abusive relationship and has worked hard to become an up-and-coming criminal defence attorney, who have just been assigned to her 1st big case which could make or break her career. Unfortunately, Kylie’s abusive ex-boyfriend is a fellow attorney in the company, and his sanity is spiralling out of control, and he wants her back. When Kylie meets billionaire Alex there is an instant connection between them, and he will protect and keep her safe by any means necessary. This is well written story which had me on tenterhooks throughout, and this story is filled with suspense, angst, drama, tension. Emotions, and is a thrilling and addictive page turner. I look forward to reading the 2nd book in this series and I highly recommend this talented authors’ work.

A really great start to a the series. We meet Kylie, a resiliant upcoming defence lawyer and Alex, a billionaire. The moment this pair meets is very amusing and I had a good chuckle at just how "typical stereotypes" were thrown away. This moment though provides readers with a really good insight to Kylie's character, yet reveals little of her past. Alex on the other hand just comes across as somewhat mysterious. Kylie doesn't ever expect to meet Alex again so when he turns up in her office, you can feel the heat between them. As their relationship develops, neither expect that Alex will have to turn into her protector as Kylie's ex-boyfriend jealously threatens not only Kylie's relationship with Alex but her life as well.

This was my first Anne L. Parks's book, and won't be my last. This is the first book in the Kylie Tate Romantic Thriller trilogy. Wow!! I loved it! Kylie and Alex's story is complex and suspenseful. They both are interesting characters. The storyline is filled with mystery, secrets, danger, and twists and turns. The world building is intriguing. The story ends with a cliffhanger, and I am looking forward to listening to Revenge, the next book in the series. Raquel Beattie and Orcus Auditory did an amazing job with the narration. They are new narrators to me. Their voices are very pleasant to listen to. This is an excellent romantic suspense.

Right from the start this one received my full attention. Kylie is a criminal defense lawyer she get s a first degree murder case. The second one is her worm of a ex John. Then there is Alex whom him and her are like magnets to each other. Insanity too seems to be part of ex John and he keeps after Kylie. The one though that keeps at trying to keep her safe is Alex. Thanks to trust issue though she is having a hard time. This will also pick at our emotional being with anticipation being a high. This one will have you flipping those pages.

Audio review 🎧

I was drawn straight into this audio by the skills of both the narrators. Rachel Beattie and Orcus Auditory capture both the narrative and characters and drive the story along with conviction. I love to be pulled into a story and was, quickly. This is a dark story in many ways, while also a love story which brings together Kylie and Alex. There is an outside threat to any HEA for this couple in the form of John, Kylie's ex and colleague. He becomes increasingly ...but I will leave it there, for you to discover..💖💖💖💖💖

As i was able to read as an ARC, I was very excited to be able to read ahead of time😁. I enjoyed the story, although it was reminiscent to one I've read before😉💜. Tragedy. Acceptance. Strength. Passion. I love it all! The journey between the two leads was interesting to see (in my mind) and that makes for great story telling! As this was a cliffhanger (did not realize), i was disappointed. However, i am excited for the next installments to this series.

This book grabs you from the beginning and doesn't let go. Kylie and Alex both come with abusive pasts and while trying to come to terms with it, and attempting to keep Kylie safe from a psycho, we are brought on a ride full of drama, trauma, insanity, passion and love. This is Book 1 in what looks like a trilogy. I am anxiously awaiting Book 2 as the cliffhanger will shock you. Extremely well written with well developed characters.

FIRST, BE WARNED: This is a reissue of Ms. Parks's Tri-Stone Trilogy, which consists of "Of Demons and Stones," "Revenge" and "Vindication.". The Tri-Stone Trilogy is one of my all-time favorites, so if you haven't read it, I highly recommend reading this new edition, especially since the original trilogy is no longer available for Kindle. Each book ends in a cliffhanger, and you will need to read all three books to get the whole story. Well worth it though when all the books are available.

5 stars for the actual story; 1 star for not making it well known that it's a reissue.

Let me start by telling you this book ends on a cliffhanger.  A HUGE cliffhanger!
This author has penned a fantastic story with well-developed characters, a strong plot and lots of romance.  The anti-hero is worthy of hate, and the interaction among the main characters is epic. My only comment is: can a brilliant woman act this stupid? Answer: apparently yes. This is an edge of your seat suspense, but make sure you already have the next book your library!

My second book by this author, and my gosh, what a doozie!

What I loved most about this story are the characters. Ms. Parks has done an excellent job of portraying each of them.

I love how a relationship between Kylie and Alex is being explored by the two, and how Alex becomes protective of Kylie when John's abusive behavior escalates.

Very intense! It kept me turning page after glorious page!

Can't wait for the next!

Wow! What an amazing story! Its a thriller that completely hooked me from the beginning. The author does a good job of setting up the characters. I feel like I have a good idea of who they are and what their personality is in the first few chapters. It made me love them and be very empathetic towards them.

What I didnt like is the cliffhanger at the end. I did listen to this on audio. The narrator is new to me and does a good job.
